The bumpmap generator only seems to accept texture nodes(the blue ones) not image nodes (the red ones).

This is no good because what happens if you have tiled your texture in the image node or inverted it with and invert node and would like to plug that to your bump generator.

I would like to plug any output that I want into the bump map generator. Is this possible?

Look for the zBump plugin by BenR. It's the ultimate way to use bumpmaps in XSI. There's likely a link or two to it here, and several at XSIbase.
