Computer Graphics, Animation and Gaming Forum

DALLAS (June 1, 2006) Step behind the scenes and into the innovative world of visual effects and game design at the fifth annual Industry Giants 2006: Giant Steps Forward computer graphics, animation and gaming forum at Collin County Community College District (Collin). The event takes place Saturday, June 10, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the John Anthony Theatre on the Spring Creek Campus, 2800 East Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. A one-day masterclass for students and professionals will be held Friday, June 9, 2006 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in room C-104 on the Spring Creek Campus. Veteran screen actor and author, Ed Hooks will lead a presentation on acting for animation. Copies of his book, Acting for Animators and Acting in Animation, will available at the presentation.
Advance tickets for Industry Giants 2006: Giant Steps Forward are $15 for students and $20 for the general public and can be purchased online at Tickets at the door will be $20 for students and $25 for the general public. Hosted annually by Collin’s Applied Graphics Design Technology department and the regional animators’ guild, A Bunch of Short Guys, Industry Giants 2006: Giant Steps Forward includes individual presentations by industry professionals followed by a panel discussion on creative approaches and methods. The event features a distinctive lineup of speakers working in all areas of animation and special effects for film, television and games. Speakers for Industry Giants 2006 include:

CHRISTIAN LORENZ SCHEURER – Visual Storytelling and Universe Creation
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Conceptual Art Director Christian Lorenz Scheurer will offer a unique glimpse into the thought processes behind creating high conceptual art for feature films and next generation video games. Christian will take the audience through the different stages of story-driven visual creation, reflecting influences of architecture, fashion and design. Scheurer’s game credits include Final Fantasy, Spore and LOTR Return of the King. His feature film work includes The Fifth Element, Titanic and The Matrix. Copies of his book, Entropia, will be available at the event. />
LONI PERISTERE – ZOIC STUDIOS – Visual Effects Creation for “Serenity”
11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.
Co-Founder of Zoic Studios, Loni Peristere is Creative Director for commercial, episodic and feature animation projects. He will lead a presentation discussing his work as Visual Effects Supervisor on the film Serenity. Peristere’s credits include Battlestar Galactica, CSI and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He received a 2003 Emmy Award for his visual effects work on the series Firefly. />

T. Dan Hofstedt is Animation Supervisor with Sony Pictures Imageworks. He will discuss his work on the animated performance capture feature Monster House, due for release this summer. Hofstedt served as Senior Character Animator on The Polar Express from Director Robert Zemeckis. THE POLAR EXPRESS was the first film to employ Imagemotion™, the motion capture system developed by Imageworks. Hofstedt is a twelve year veteran of Walt Disney Feature Animation, where The Lion King, Aladdin and Pocahontas are among his many credits. />
SCOTT PETERSON - DIGITAL ANVIL – Designing for Tomorrow’s Game Platforms
2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Game Designer, Scott Peterson, with Digital Anvil/Microsoft Game Studios, will discuss game console improvements and how designers are using increased power to create more visually compelling game environments. Peterson counts Freelancer, Brute Force and Enwor are among his game credits and Spawn, The Nutty Professor and Spy Kids among his film credentials.

3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Dallas-based DNA Productions will discuss their production and development work on the animated feature The Ant Bully, to be released this summer in standard and IMAX versions. DNA also produced the Oscar-nominated Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius as well as the cable series of the same name. />
PANEL DISCUSSION – Giant Steps Forward
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Rita Street will lead a panel discussion with the presenters to conclude the event. She is managing director of Radar Cartoons, co-producer of The Nicktoons Film Festival, vice president of development for Mike Young Productions and has authored several books on the graphic arts including Computer Animation: A Whole New World.

Ed Hooks will join the panel discussion. He is a veteran actor and author of the books, Acting for Animators and Acting In Animation. or />
The Applied Graphic Design Technology department at Collin is a graphic design and new media discipline within the Fine Arts division. Academic degree and certificate programs include: graphic design, 3D animation, digital video, multimedia, internet/web design and gaming animation.
