I was really not sure whether to start this beautiful modeling challenge or not. There are plenty of good photo references, but Iīm still missing details. I dont like to model things that I cannot well recognize.

another update

there are always some minor issues, that you actually find out only in the render. It is easy to correct that line at the bottom of the clocks and missing arches in the very middle. (

dominikmk : yes, it consist of several parts, but they are pretty good aligned to one another so it looks like one solid object... and I am convinced, that it will be also better for texturing

SweD : Firstly , I cannot understand what does "lateral rhombus" means. :) :scream: I am going to do more close ups to see details, because on these renders many beautiful details are washed out.

I donīt have already made clocks in the render because I have it in separate files. Also made minor changes and final touches to clocks - I will post clocks render next time. (

Added upper side pillars (

There are some small details that are still missing :wip: - like old inscriptions. Its because i have only limited references and from that the letters are not completely clear. Also missing floral reliefs behind the front shields and similar reliefs behind the upper shield. I will have to decide whether to model these parts or use a texture, but its called hardcore modeling challenge, so I would prefer the first way.

This was the hardest part so far. I wanted to model the whole roof, not use a texture. The first difficulty turned out right in the middle of modeling process. I suddenly realized that I have got not 8 horizontal rows as on the original roof of BigBen, but 9 :eek: :eek: I wasnt happy at all. I wasnt sure whether to do the whole roof again with 8 rows or let there 9 rows. I have found the third way - not an easy one - I removed all the edges and vertices on correct places and shortened the number of rows down to 8. :) So finally im satisfied with the result.

On the upper parts I have really no good refences, so it will be funny. :p

Polycount is as I expected not so low. Now 190.000 triangles.
Lot of details are not visible because of the same colour, but after texturing you will see them.

Still missing 2 statues and inscriptions and floral reliefs.

dominikmk : yeah, youīre right, the time is an issue; Iīm not the fastest modeler in this forum but I try to catch all the details. Iīm not planning to do Parliament, because of the time. I will be happy to complete BigBen on time and do final renders.

Here is announced update. Happy to tell that all upper parts are completed. Yes, still missing some minor details and I have discovered from some photos that one part is possibly a bit different, but thatīs not big issue. (

Man, these entries are so good! I'm getting a little nervous about the area around the actual clock, myself. Splines? Booleans? Extrude?

Hi all. Its high time to say my last words to 2nd Modeling challenge.

Today it was really exhausting. The last day in the morning I found in the thread that we are finishing today. For some reason I thought that the dateline is 16th. It was my big fault and I wasnt really happy. But now I can say I have completed most of that I wanted.

The tower, as you can see, isnt fully completed. There is no bottom part, the easist I can say.


MESHES - 2.999
TRIS - 1.156.830
VERTICES - 624.305

TIME SPEND (not exactly but estimated)

5 hours - looking for references, preparation, correction of photos - levels, sharpening, estimating measures from photos
110 hours - modeling
6 hours - texturing, painting textures
6 hours - final touches, rendering ( (

I wasnt able to deliver to this midnight more renders. Tommorow (exactly today) I wont be at home, I will spend all the day at the cottage because of some important issues, but later will post wires and more renders. Good night.

yes, I used HDRI as MXI Emitter mapped on half sphere, but similar result you can obtain with classic enviroment.
I will use alpha channel and remove this HDRI sky with some sky pictures I have, which will give far better and realistic results. Its good to have HDRI sky reflected in glass but in the sky it looks like really flat so I will do that fast tweaks.

I have prepared some pictures but I will show then on Friday because the lowest parts arent yet completed - but on the other side I have modeled two big statues, made all the floral motifs and ornaments as a mesh (before I used texture and for some reason bump maps wasnt able to appear), modeled another details in the clocks area and corrected some mistakes and errors I have found.

It seems like you are going for a very overcast day. But you could probably add a directional light for some hard shadows and more light and then use a brighter image in the background. This would also allow people to see your detail on the building better. Just a thought...

hey, very good modeling.

for crits, i think most of your renders are from too much of a low angle which makes it very difficult to judge the details in the clock.

that was because I have had no spare time to do other than final, pre-final renders...

here are some pictures which can show you details - there is not rgb channel, but coscamera channel because it takes only a while to render, not an hour ( ( ( (
