I've recently bought Painter and a decent wacom tablet as I want to dive into the wonderfull world of digital painting. I'm hoping you guys would like to help me as I feel I need to improve a lot.
Sketch was made using the grid method (I want this to be farely accurate to the reference picture I'm using)
If you feel you have to correct/guide me on some issue please do so.
It will be highly appreciated.
I'm having troubles inserting images in my posts so here are links to them:
Thanks in advance for your help

The images are not showing up, the link may be broken. I don't really know painter but I can give you some tips on the skintones / shading and other things like that when the links are fixed :)

Ok, I see the image now :)
I think that there are some issues on the face : the eyes look too large and the upper lip is larger than the lower one. The red on the cheeks is too vivid so it makes the child look like he's wearing makeup. I think that a good way to give a soft and natural look would be to choose less saturated colours and use cold colours (blue, green, purple) for the shadows and light warm ones for the lighting ;) The face and hands should reflect a little bit the yellow colour of the T-shirt. The hands look a little bit too dark compared to the face.
Be careful when you're painting the eyes : they are round, so the white part is never totally white ;)
I think that it has potential, just take your time and try to variate a little bit the skintones :)

Worked a bit on the skin and mouth
(the neck and hands have to be redone)
Obviously it's far from finished...

Finally found some time to work on this.
I actually started all over again twice, trying to improve the colors.
Mainly the skintones
Worked a bit on the eyes as well. It's pretty weird with these kids eyes. They are sunken quite deep into their sockets. Due to that the upper eyelid is hardly visible.
What do you think? Isn't the face too pale now? I'm gonna have to add lighting as well. I want the main light to come from upper right and from front to back.
I've attached a sample of the refpic as well. I want to change everything. The end result shouldn't look anything like the refpic (except ofcourse the girl should look like the girl on the refpic :D)
Oh, the tones of the hands were my 2nd attempt at skintones. It was still too reddish...
Your feedback is very welcome!

Wow, it's really better now! You've improved a lot in the last version. The eyes and colour of the skin are much better! I want to see more :)

ok just to show you I'm not dead (i was busy putting my new homepage up...)
I've started working on the jumper a bit.
I've also made some corrections on the nose but it still needs some more tweaking. Still have to do those eyelashes too, tried it twice but failed twice. Maybe tomorrow huh.
As always, crits are well appreciated.

I've decided to put this one on hold for a while. I will finish it when I feel I am at a point where I am capable of finishing it without having to think about basic stuff like what brush to use or what colors to be prominent.
Since a few weeks I've been concentrating on studying anatomy to improve my drawing skills and recently starting to recreate masterpieces from great artists from today and the past to learn how to paint. I have so much to learn and this piece here in particular (since the subject is very personal), I want to give it the best I have, which isn't enough at this time.
I will attend drawing classes from september on for the next 4 years, which will surely boost my perceptive powers. Maybe in a short while I will be able to produce this work on a level of quality I am aiming at. Today, I simply can't and I don't want to be fooling myself (or anyone else for that matter).
I want to thank those who helped me starting off this project, in particular Dianae, whom I've learned from a lot already.
Ok, before I'm getting on the filosophical road too much... please follow my progress in my anatomy thread if you are interested. I'm posting a lot of my most recent studies there. Ciao for now
