View Full Version : Intel or Supermicro CPU Fans?

01 January 2003, 02:51 AM
Hey there,

I'm putting together a new system with a Supermicro X5DA8 board and Xeons. I have two sets of heatsink+fans for the CPUs-- the ones that came with the MB and the ones that came with the processors.

Anyone have advice on which ones I should use?

Probably do best to go with the supermicro's. I keep hearing that the new Intel heatsinks and fans are ok, but not great. And they're loud from the reviews that I've read over at

I installed the Supermicro's, mainly because my MB chassis didn't have drilled holes required for the Intel HSF units. The Supermicros had plastic tabs you could use to secure the brackets to the MB. (Upon reflection, I guess I could have used the same tabs with the Intel HSFs, had I wanted to.)

Hopefully all will work out.
