View Full Version : The Tin Woodsman

I've spent the last half of a year working on an animation along with all of my other projects. It was the main thing I was working on, the most fun to work on, and the most annoying one as well. I guess that is how it goes. It is a multimedia animation, combining several different methods and looks (hopefully) into a cohesive style. I'm actually studying sculpture here at my university, but I did this on my free time, and loosely tied this into a class I was taking, mainly to just give myself a deadline. I ended up not actually showing my animation or getting any real feedback on it in the class, and I ended up putting it into the final screening for another class.

I combined 3D computer graphics, with hand drawn 2d animation. For the backdrops I would use a combination of digital paintings, photos (which were usually painted over), CG models/scenes, and there is one hand built miniature set. The subject is about the origin of the Tin Woodsman from the Wizard of Oz. I adapted it from L Frank Baum's original book series (there were 14 original books.)

Here are a few stills:

I've got an offical project page ( and a small production gallery ( that includes shots and how I did them. The production gallery is still in the works, and I plan on adding more information and shot information to it all.

Finally the actual animation.

I've got it on YouTube if you want to watch it really fast, with a really crappy quality.

And I've got a torrent of the high quality one.

It can also be downloaded from the project page... but I'd like my site not to die from bandwidth if at all possible. If it does... well oh well.
