So here it is finally... Are you happy now RK? ; )

Here is a collection of work from Rebecca's amazing CG Workshop and few recent pieces that I did for my portfolio/fun. Let me know what you think.

Aw duuuude!

Absolutely love these! The green and orange portrait looks fantastic, and the one hand reminds me of David's hand by Michelangelo. The is also an comforatble seamlessness between you traditional stuff and your digitals. Have some stars bro.

You need to keep posting.

05 May 2006, 03:36 PM
What's up Shay? :applause:

Finally! The man himself has posted! ;)

It's great to see your Anat Thread up, as now I can attempt to mould you into the stately young gentleman you were always meant to be. :scream: It's great to see your new work, and look forward to seeing much more of it. Umm...what's with the girl and the bleeding 'n' stuff? :D

Cheers, :)

05 May 2006, 04:14 PM
demented - thx man! Yeah the hand is David's, Rebecca spent most of the workshop trying to break me : ) I resisted at first but did actually come to appreciate the "master copy" - they had such a great understanding of anatomy, light and form.

btw - thx for the stars. I promise to keep updating.

RK - Hahaha, young gentleman... never ; ) The bleeding girl is a long story, hehe. A concept piece for my DVD about the lose of love or a loved one and the numbness that can it throw your mind into. Ever feel so sad that all senses are dampened. Sight, sound, touch, pleasure, pain. Nothing feels the way you know it should. You feel drugged. I post the other pieces when I get them done, maybe it will make more sense : )

Depressing imagery aside, I really like the way the lighting came out. It started in your class and it's really effecting everything I do. Overexposure just looks so cool to me ; )

05 May 2006, 05:39 PM
Wowee, these are nice. Especialy the coloured portrait! The foot study looks great, the hand study too. Trully, brilliant stuff.

05 May 2006, 07:24 PM
HI.... Shay ...

Very impressive work....really enjoyed your thread...woman with mech. snakes my favorite
great colors, composition, and atmosphere.
Can't wait to see more of your works....

05 May 2006, 09:19 PM
Awesome illustrations, thankyou for sharing.

Please post more :D

05 May 2006, 03:10 PM
Fl3wk - Thx!

SpiritDreamer - Thx! Its is a remake of Leda and the Swan by DaVinci, basic pose and body proportions, everything else is just my twisted mind : )

Razz - Thx! That means alot to me because I absolutely hate drawing feet. Hands are my favorite part, they are the most expressive part of a pose to me.

05 May 2006, 07:02 PM
Well, you can hate it but you have to know how to do that and you're doing great. Show us more.

05 May 2006, 01:33 AM
as promised here's some new stuff : ) they are still frames for a video that go by in about 1/2 second so I'm aloud to be sloppy... I think : p

05 May 2006, 04:32 AM
Heya Shay,

On simplified portraits, it's especially important to nail those basic parallel axes of the face:

Don't forget what I learned you! ;)

05 May 2006, 12:17 PM
I think the one with the skull looks just great! I, ehm, like that kind of stuff :D Beautiful!

05 May 2006, 11:25 AM
Rebecca - I got your parallel axes right here : p
Seriously, it is crap. I knew something was wrong with it but I couldn't seam to work it out. Looking at it now, maybe its more the fact that his forehead sits farther back in space than his cheeckbones.

This is what you learned me mostly - I suck at anatomy without reference. The propblem is I always want to illustrate a character doing a specific action from a specific angle and I just can't get ref for that. I guess I am just going to have to take photos of myself for everything I do. Its just kinda weird to look at an image of your own face and try to make it art, know what I mean? : )

razz - thx man... me too. I think I am going to be returning to my roots artistically and doing more abstract work from here on out. I just works out better for me. Plus, skulls are cool : )

05 May 2006, 04:35 PM

The remedy for doing drawings from imagination is doing a lot of master studies ~ traditionally ~ from artists like Burne Hogarth. Check out his Dynamic Anatomy ( and or Dynamic Figure Drawing ( book, buckle down and do some serious copies of his work, and engrain his formulas in your mind. This will seriously help you in terms of drawing from imagination (it helped me). I recommend doing the copies traditionally, in a dedicated sketchbook, using either pencil or ballpoint pen.

Cheers, :)

05 May 2006, 02:06 AM
I am not saying I am giving up, I am just at a point in my art that I just want to be more abstract and symbolic. The majority of work that I did growing up was all symbols and graphics and I feel life I need to return to that because its uniquely me.

For the last few years I want to paint like Brom or Frazetta but I am not them so why should I want to paint what they paint. Sorry for getting all mystical on your ass ; ) Carry on.

05 May 2006, 05:14 AM
LOL, no worries Shay, I think I know you by now. ;) What do you mean by 'mystical'? Just curious, I don't what the definition means for you.

Cheers, :)

05 May 2006, 03:36 PM
Hi Se7en.. some really lovely work here, my faves are your close up studies of the feet and the master copies. Keep up the good work!

06 June 2006, 01:11 PM
Zephyri - Thanks Sam. Thats a big compliment coming from someone with such amazing talent. : )

RK - Hahaha, I just mean not being a smart ass ; ) By mystical I just mean over-anaylizing my work. What it means to me, how's other perceive it, etc. Unfortunately my art is attached to my ego and I really need to let it go. I feel personal and emotional ups and downs based on my most recent drawing or painting. That is not healthy or easy to deal with in any way.

I guess I should just spend less time thinking about creating art and and spend more time creating art. : p

06 June 2006, 01:08 PM
Ah! my creative guru is here:bounce:

Since all the eyecandy work is on Anatomy forum now, i can ve a treat and inspiration any time:applause:

Shay...apologies fr replyin l8;)

Well above all my fav.z ur creative concepts Its is a remake of Leda and the Swan by DaVinci, basic pose and body proportions, everything else is just my twisted mind : )
love the twisted things in ur art;)

06 June 2006, 08:16 AM
Heya Shay, :)

You should join the ongoing Workshop:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head (

I didn't know if you had seen it. :) Going to invite the others from the Workshop as well. :)

07 July 2006, 08:53 PM
Rich-doll where are you kid!? Get busy ; )

Rebecca please stop spamming my thread with you blatant and shameless advertising : p

New work. Need to get some ref and push the figure and shading a little further. Maybe reduce some of the noise.

07 July 2006, 02:49 PM
Hey se7en

liking this last one alot - good layout and text improve the whole thing, makes everything look better. keep cracking man

- d.

07 July 2006, 03:35 AM
Thanks demented!

Hello Rebecca... wtf? where r u? ; )

07 July 2006, 03:40 AM
Ello darling. :) I am beach bound currently! ;) Really cool new work! The character seems a bit that intentional? I'm unable to do any paintovers now, (no PS / Wacom for me) but this is a really strong piece! Care to explain a bit about it? I'll be more around on Sunday evening. I want to see some pictures of you from the Workshop! I demand satisfaction! :)

Cheers, ;)

07 July 2006, 08:08 AM
Great painting you've done here. But I've never liked text on an image. I'm not telling you to get rid of it, but that just doesn't look right to me. I think some other backrgound could fit better in there. Then again, it maybe just me. The figure need a little tweaking, but here I can't help, learning myself. Rebecca's overpaints are awesome :)

Are that nails in his head or is it just my twisted imagination?

07 July 2006, 02:10 PM
Ahhh sheeees back. I want to go to the beach too damn it. Its going to be like 95 + humid today : (

Androgenous yes. That was the concept here. Any good killer or dememted sould needs to have some other strange characteristics I think. Its obvious they have one mental defect, but it would show in other areas as well. In this case his own masculinity/femininity is in question. Also his arms are intentional long just to make him freakier, if thats a word : )

I will dig up a picture for you, don't worry : )

Razz - thanks dude! The reason for the text is this is a mock up book cover. I actually am going to rearrange it so that the design looks more like a standard book cover and remove some of the extra noise. I am marketing to art directors for cover illo + design work. I just want to show them that I can and would prefer to do both at the same time instead of them using 2 different people.

And yes, he has nails in his head : p

07 July 2006, 06:48 PM
:scream:Your concept based artwork:thumbsup:Nails on head...Spiders and bees...Hooks and Chains...Text illustration...Allz my fav.
well, dunno abt noise but char is nt much in focus:shrug:thrz too much gud stuff to watch in one canvas:twisted:

07 July 2006, 01:34 AM
Riiiiiiicha!! Hahah, I am sooo normal... I just like weird stuff. FYI - I am going to keep all of the elements but I think I will turn it into a full book jacket so I can spread some stuff out. Thanks for the kind words.

Rebecca heres a pic of me and hp at a sushi restaurant in montreal. Yes I have a stupid cheesy grin. Too much saki : )

07 July 2006, 03:02 AM
Great work here really like all your work
think you might need a snake in that last one though :) just kidding it's awsome the way it is.

Ahhhhhhhh awesome!!! It's great to finally see what you look like ~ it's impossible to tell from people's avvies, so it's great to finally put a face to a name. :)

Did you meet Martin Brennand, aka erilaz, then? He, hp, Dirty_C and some others shared a room I believe.

Thanks for sharing! :)

07 July 2006, 01:48 AM
Fate - thanks man.

Rebecca - Hahaha yeah thats me and hp in the picture : ) She's a really cool girl. Erilaz and Dirty C were both really nice guys and a lot of fun. I kinda wish I had stayed at the hostel too so I coulda hung out with everyone more. Actually I wish Montreal just went on forever, that would be the best!

Shay:) Great to see the good time you had in Montreal workshop. I too wish to meet artists from cgtalk in ADAPT Montreal Conference(Sep 23-24).

:scream: Great pic:)

07 July 2006, 08:33 PM
Richa I'm still waiting for your pic : ) Wish I could meet you in Montreal but I definitely can't afford to go back right now.

Here's a new piece from my sketchbook with a little design/paint thrown in.

07 July 2006, 02:23 PM
Heya Shay,

Good to see your new work! :) Am really liking that background drawing in particular! With the foreground figure, I think the body has a nice dimensionality to it, but I think that something is flattening out with her face ~ in particular around the eyes, which don't seem to be set within eye sockets, but seem more to be floating on the surface. :) I do however, know one Workshop where you can practice Portraits to your heart's content: :D

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head (

I would actually really encourage you to try this, in your own time. Also I would encourage you to draw the Portraits (at least some of them) traditionally. Feel free to set your own time limit, but at least try a few ~ I think you would really enjoy and benefit from doing so. :)

07 July 2006, 09:30 PM
Newness : ) Just a little practice in figure and staying loose with my paint technique. I painted this zoomed out 95% of the time and didn't draw anything first, just blocked values in. Trying to get my menmodel (zhuzhu) inspiration flowing : )

Rebecca thanks. Yeah I added some ghost effects around the face to make her look more alien like. You win some, you lose some ; ) At least I can love the bg and other sketchy stuff. I will see if I can participate some in your latest torture session : p

07 July 2006, 04:29 PM

The body looks great! The head I feel doesn't look convincingly attached to the neck / body ~ for one thing, I think the head looks too small for the body ~ and remember that bit about drawing the head without the hair at first, that really helps to show the real proportional relationship. :)

Do you plan to work further on this piece?

Cheers, :)

07 July 2006, 02:04 PM
Thanks Rebecca. Looking at it again I can see that the hair and the head are not at the same angle. I will probably try and fix, but I don't want to spend too much time on it becasue it was done at low res.

07 July 2006, 04:56 AM

You can always of course resize this up, but I can understand if you'd want to move on. :) By the way, have you seen this book (

Cheers, :)

07 July 2006, 12:57 PM
I ve mailed u my pics...and u can also see my blog

I like the work done on backgrounds very much!..Inspired from ur artwork i ve started scribbling pages of my sketchbook...they ve no more white background.

For the last piece i would agree with Rebecca and though m not the correct person to crit anatomy but may be itz with her pose...upper body seems much smaller than lower body:shrug:

08 August 2006, 01:02 AM
Richa - hey cool. Does everyone have a blog now? Jeez. I refuse to go with the accepted norm. You can't make me blog : )

Anyway thx for the feedback - I'm glad I can inspire you to push yourself. She's just a girl with a little ooomph so to speak : ) One ass cheeck, can I say that?, is dropped too. Oh well live and learn right.

Becks - yeah uprez just looks bad imo. At least I always feel like I want to go back in and redefine all of the edges and details : ( I am such a detail maniac...

Anyway, here's some new pencil madness about regeneration...

08 August 2006, 06:44 PM

Hey, some really great work with this last piece! You might try starting more of your digital pieces with pencil. You seem to have a lot of confidence and control there that might form a better base for the digitals, where there's less sense of the page.

Keep up the good work! :)

08 August 2006, 03:03 PM
Thanks Beckanator! : ) Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out out to incorporate all of my different skills and style into one unified whole. The abstract pencil work, digital painting and graphic design. I guess I'm just exploring different options right now and having fun. The correct solution will present itself when the time is right.

08 August 2006, 02:09 AM
not sure what to think about this piece. I love parts of it personally, just not sure about it in general. What it makes people think or feel I guess. I have not gotten a great response from but I know why... its not a ninja or a dragon or a robot. They tend to like work that is loose but based on an actual "scene." So what do you guys think? Anyone?

08 August 2006, 04:25 AM
I tend to like odd things in a graphic style (just to preface my bias).

Something bothered me in the face, it seems technically correct (to my limited eye), but the ear read slowly and that gave me a bit of trouble grasping the angle of the face. That had my eye rolling up the face and then off into the upper right.

Awesome texture to the whole thing, and the sticky butterfly is haunting. The blood is almost luminous, really pops.

Very nice piece. Well crafted enough to look at it for some time, but not an easy read.

08 August 2006, 05:05 PM
The textures and details that u paint are the best and i fail to understand hwcm it didnt get a gr8 response on any website:shrug:
Really nice to see this composition:applause: radium...brain...and so much more:scream:

08 August 2006, 01:26 AM
kary - thanks! Yeah something is messed up about the head. Apparently I need to get busy on Rebecca's head copies. hmmm

Richa! Thanks you keep me motivated to try harder when I want to give up. <3 2 u : )

08 August 2006, 03:14 AM
In fact I think I'll start now...

head 01 plus enhanced version ; )

08 August 2006, 07:37 AM
Haha how sweet is that, great drawing / rework there.

A shame I can't better articulate what threw me on the head, but all I can come up with is how long it took me to place the ear. That kept me from grasping the angle for a bit and the long forehead into the sweeping lines were probably so strong it overwhelmed it. Despite not nailing down an issue in particular, it's always a good idea to draw another 50 heads I imagine ;).

Your stuff is amazing, always fun to look at whats new in your thread :)

08 August 2006, 08:45 AM
 This extra bit of creativity in ur artwork is what makes it so outstandingly amazing!..:applause:
Will we get the treat of watching few more heads reworked with ur creative graphics??? It ll be a good inspiration for us:)

08 August 2006, 06:52 PM
kary - thanks I like to put a little 7 spin on these otherwise I get bored : p Don't worry about the head crit I see what people have a problem w/ now... just trying to figure out what to do to fix it : ) I will try and update this more often.

Richa!!! aaawwww how nice. I wish you could just IM me everyday and tell me how great I am ; ) Hahaha, at least someone thinks so... I will keep going don't you worry.

09 September 2006, 07:03 PM

Get your buns on over to the new Workshop:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso (

Cheers, :)

09 September 2006, 06:32 PM
Yeah Shay:)C'mon ovr...U'll find me thr in the wrkshop!..
And i dont see nebody thr like u...who can combine graphics so well with the paintings!..
So wud lv to see that twisted work from your side on those torso!..
P.S. - Its also a great workshop on anatomy!..

09 September 2006, 12:42 AM
hahah - you said buns. Thats sooo old school RK : ) I will try and play along... I can promise that much at least.

Riiiiich! wow you are sooo good to me. I thank the stars for your every breath ; ) Hopeful I can get a few of these in, it will be great to see you there.

02 February 2007, 02:40 PM
wow - I've been gone a long time : ) I will try and post here more often!

Here are a few new sketches/speedpaints that I have done...

02 February 2007, 02:41 PM
and some more finished stuff...

02 February 2007, 02:42 PM
And finally on Jan 3rd I started a new personal endevor that has pretty much consumed my free time. I am concepting and developing a horror/sci-fi 22 card tarot set hopefully I will publish it in the near future. The working title is Tarot of the Damned.

This is a sample of the finished work - the first card 0 in the tarot is The Fool. Its about careless/carefree in the face of danger, openness, child-like innocense etc. Not thinking, just doing.

Here are the designs that I have been working on for the first half of the set...

I would love to know what you guys think. Thanks for looking : )

02 February 2007, 04:01 PM
man that is some project!
the first card looks great although I would have loved seeing the chest and arms a bit more defined (is it skin? or armor of some kind? or...?)

the thumbs for the other cards look very promising indeed. Definitely something I'm looking forward to see developing!

02 February 2007, 05:34 PM
This project is great! Courage Se7en, because I really waits to see the continuation. All sketch of the cards are well, just a thing, tries to make the emperor stronger, large powerful, massive… you see what I want to say ? :-)
See you soon !!!
Ishtar (^--^)

02 February 2007, 03:11 AM
Hey Shay, hope you're well and my God you've been a busy man! Your graphic design skills have always been strong but I definitely see progression in your painting. It's nice to see all the hard work is paying off. Love those little thumbnail sketches, they convey a lot of dynamism and skill. I really can't wait to see what you do with them, I get the feeling there are going to be some stunners among that lot!

all the best

02 February 2007, 04:36 AM
OMG! How did I miss this thread till now?!! awesome work, Shay!!:bounce:

02 February 2007, 09:59 AM
First of all i loved the details you painted on eye!!!:bounce:
And the thumbnail work that you have shared with us shows great conceptwork too!!!
Looking fwd to see these tarot cards!!!
Great designing skills!!!

And my fav. one is High preistess.I liked the composition...and the character on that card!..

02 February 2007, 02:12 PM
NR43 - Thanks! The first (unseen) version I did define all of the anatomy but I realized that what I wanted was something more abstract. It is skin just very pale and semi-transparent. Really I just wanted the skin a mess and I was just trying to commmunicate the 3D forms. It still has a few errors in anatomy, but hopeful they arten't enough to ruin the piece : )

Ishtar - haha yes, I love your wording ; ) I am not sure which version, but I did redo him towards the bottom with more of what you said. More regal, arrogant and powerful. It is a crazy undertaking so thanks for the support.

J-K - Thanks for the kind words. I have realized that what makes me a great designer is pure confidence. I never question composition, colors, balance, texture, etc. but when I paint I am all over the map. I feel like I need to question every decision. It will come with time and practice, but it is difficult for me because design was easy from day one.

Thanks for seeing the potential in this. I have a few favorites right now too and I hope I can do them justice. If only I had had your rendering skills and patience : )

anandpg - Thank you very much! I'm sure you didn't see because I have been a slacker and haven't updated it since august of 06 ; )

CgIcecube - Thanks - I am trying to push my flesh and emotion rendering a little further these days. I am really glad that you like the designs, though I had a sneaking suspicion (sp?) that you would ; ) I like the high preistess a lot as well... she seams very serene, which is a good thing.

Thanks again everyone for looking and the feedback. I will keep this updated as I progress.

02 February 2007, 11:38 PM
Shay! This project looks really cool, congrats! :)

The overall thing I can recommend is just continuing that drawing practice! :) I've just posted a Tutorial / Exercise which I think you might find useful. I've been sitting in on a drawing class that's been so refreshing because it's reminding me of all the fundamentals I've forgotten how to verbalize. I really recommend trying it!
