Hi guys, thought i would share this piece with you all and get some hopefully good crits and ideas too. :) I want this to be my Behomoth type artwork for my portfolio when i go job hunting in the games industry.

Here is the eye bleeding rough sketch first of all, i havent decided yet how the creature will look exactly, just playing with some ideas and hopefully something original and above all COOL will come from it. I will eventually add in some people in the foreground too. Comments and crits welcome! :)

Thanks guys!

Playing around with the head shape and stuff :)

05-16-2006, 11:39 AM
Nice design

05-16-2006, 11:52 AM
thanks dj,

Do you think the beast should be staring at the little dots (people) or maybe looking more towards the people in the foreground? Im gonna have a play with the idea i think

05-16-2006, 12:21 PM
heres a quick look at what he would look like staring at the people in the froeground...im not 100 percent sure but i think i like this version better, his neck seems less stiff and looks mroe menacing...not sure bout the tail, what do you guys think? Cheers! :D

05-16-2006, 01:36 PM
Yes I think it would be better if he was looking at the foreground, looks like he might come charging any second.
Good luck with this one!

05-16-2006, 06:24 PM
Thanks buddy :)

heres a quick update, going straight into detailing like i used to do, zooming right in and working me hands off. starting on the cliff behind the beast. Best to get the boring stuff out the way first ;)

Hey guys had a spare hour to work some more on this...mainly getting that mountain looking good. As you can imagine, takes a while lol. :D Heres a closer look.

Comments allwas apreciated :)

Ooohh I love the beastie. Lovely design, really. Are you going to colour it? The mountain looks great. I'd love it if you put some heavy clouds in the sky, to bring the viewers attention down to the people running on the ground, and generally bring the flow of the picture downwards - its a very epic image, I think something like that would suit it. Either way, good luck with it! :)

05-19-2006, 04:18 AM
Looks more like a brontothere then a bear, but it still a cool beast anyways

05-19-2006, 04:27 AM
I'm really liking that rocky texture, great work there!
Keep it up!

05-19-2006, 08:54 AM
Thanks very much guys! :)

howlinghorse : Thanks, yes i think im going to colour it all, would you have the whole sky filled with clouds ? I think now as ive done the rocks as if sun is shining on them i might have to go with a slightly cloudy sky. Could still do them heavy i guess we shall see. :)

Irate : yeah hes starting to look more dinosaur than bear now, i used a body of a bear for reference to begin with and messed about with him a little, elephant feet etc.

pap : thanks man, will do :)

05-19-2006, 10:27 AM
Regarding the clouds, since the sun is behind the viewer, it's still possible for the sky in front of us to be full of clouds and with the light shining directly on them they will look even better!

05-19-2006, 10:45 AM
Thanks pap, ill have a go soon and see how it looks :)

Update :

05-19-2006, 11:21 AM
Maybe you could try a high-contrast sky with lots of light coming through the clouds, backlighting them which would add to the dramaticness, and then also make the lighting make sense on the rocks?... What I would do is have the clouds seem quite far away, make them smallish, and near the horizon so it is maybe as though they're approaching... could add some nice depth to the image, if you wanted to fiddle with it. Or like pap says, the light could be from behind the viewer, which would also make the lighting on the beast make sense. It's just a case for experimentation I guess! :)

05-19-2006, 11:49 AM
Yeah i can see the clouds being a lot of work in the experimental side of things but should be worth it. Im going to get rid of the people i think for now and decide whats going on after ive one the beast. Also, i might add more of a war scene goingon. maybe guys with rockets at the foreground and ships battling the creature. I might add up to 3 of them if i upsie the canvas, maybe one in the background taking down a massive ship or something. :D

05-19-2006, 12:14 PM
Heres what i mean by making the canvas bigger and allowing more view and higher rez. Think its a bit too much?

05-19-2006, 12:38 PM
Its nice to have the canvas bigger but I think there is too much sky above the beast - I preferred it before, when it was nearer the top of the frame, it gave it a larger sense of scale - and now it seems a little diminished by the open space.

05-19-2006, 01:31 PM
I have to agree with you now i keep looking at it... i think ill have it wider though and maybe only a tad bit taller but not much. Cheers

05-19-2006, 03:32 PM
which face do you prefer out of these guys? cheers.

there just rough, just throwing some variation out. :)

05-19-2006, 06:43 PM
Well here he is so far, decided on the second face and messed around with it, also brought the beast further in the foreground for maximum shit your pants run look. :D

05-19-2006, 06:49 PM
I love the way its going! The rock and wall look wonderfully realistic. Keep drawing :D

05-19-2006, 07:39 PM
just getting the lighting right on his face, not there yet. :)

05-19-2006, 08:56 PM
Another update, i think ill add more width to the piece, so it looks more like something out of a movie and i can fit more or the story on there. Not sure about the nuke in the background or not. Obviously thw world is being taken over by these things so humanity is fleeing in these space craft (dont take notice of the shoddy looking spaceship, or people its just rough) ;). Any comments please and opinions? Thanks!

05-19-2006, 09:50 PM
ok im getting rid of the nucleur fart now, hahah! :D :D :D

05-20-2006, 03:42 AM
Oooh yeah! That's looking awesome now!

05-20-2006, 09:44 PM
Not much done so far, just experimenting and trying to get that bloody shadow look right on him. Also as you can see got rid of the wall, to allow a better view of the people running up the stairs.

and heres what i mean when i think ill keep the jaw how it is. When hes in search mode, looking for humans to eat he has his mouth closed and just one all seeing eye visible in the centre. Also maybe have his whole neck inside his body like a turtle. Then when he spots his prey his neck would jump out suddenly and let off a mighty roar as his mouth opens up revealing him Predetor eyes ready for the hunt. :D

05-21-2006, 06:45 PM
Well, this is going slow i bet your thinking. lol :) sorry bout that, got a shit load of university work to do inbetween so loads of work to do.

Here he is so far, that shoulder armour is bugging me, ill sort it out soon enough.

05-25-2006, 05:48 PM
Update! :)

05-25-2006, 07:35 PM
Wow, lots of progress. Looking great, but I think the guy farthest away from us is a bit too small. In fact, I think all three of the people behind the front-most guy are a bit too small if you compare them to the steps and to the perspective produced here. If you want to keep the smallest guy to make the creature look huge, I suggest shrinking the kid and the girl to about 80~90% of their current size, and the front guy to about 80~85%. Or just play with their sizes, if possible.

05-25-2006, 10:05 PM
Thanks eishiya, i agree with you now i keep looking at it. :) allthough i was going to play with the stairs as the way they are now its kind of rough going down them. I think ill probably move the smallest guy further down the steps to be honest as he looks likehes running to his left more which would be away from the best if i position him further down. Thanks again!

05-25-2006, 11:13 PM
this is getting really cool! Besides the perspective, what has already been mentioned, I would take a look at the facial expressions of those people. The front guy looks more like he is doing his daily running, than being scared of that >huge< monster ;)

keep it up

05-26-2006, 12:42 AM
will do Lybra and thanks, im gonna be working on those people properly next ;)

just experimenting here with an extra beast in the background and a cliff in the distance, which is not done yet i must stress! i know the perspective wouldent be like that but as i said, for experimental sake i want to change the rules a bit and see how it fits. :D Think i should add another beast? or just have the one in the background?
Oh and im not doing the ship now, i feel it takes messes up the scene being too busy.
