View Full Version : K. Killjoy's thread of concepts etc.

I've been working on a few concepts for a MMO game, I thought I'd post them up here for some feedback. This first design is of a female knight, with a bit of cat-like details on her armour. I try to design functional, believable characters, rather than going mad with chainmail bikinis, etc! I drew this in pencil, scanned it and painted it in Painter, then added tecture in photoshop. Thanks for looking, extra thanks for C&C!

Hey that's really good metal rendering! Quite realistic! Her head seems to be slightly out of place, maybe it's that her collar restricts her movement perhaps. Would love to see her face rendered as well as the armor.

Good stuff!

Thanks for the comments JM.

I've taken a second look at it, positioned the face where it should go - squished in the V of the neck. This is important 'cause I've designed a Tiger helmet (not painted yet) to go on the armour, and she has to look out of mouth.

I've tried to fix the quality of the face up a bit, still not a realistic looking as the armour though.

I've updated the original pic at this link:

Yeah that's good work! Maybe some occlusion shading on her face could help, where the collarkeeps the light out for instance. It tends to add a more real feel, it would certainly spice it up a bit.

you're welcome.

Hello again all, here's the very beginning of my next concept. WARNING: NUDITY. Scanned pencils, no reference, just lots of erasing...

It's a "monster" type called an "Angel of Vengeance". Sort of an undead Valkyrie.

Comments appreciated, 'specially at this early stage.

Lots of progress on the Angel Of Vengeance. The wings were troublesome, so I think she'll ride a horse instead. Anyway, comments, crits please. There are a couple things still bugging me about it - the feet suck, and the's, er, "placeholder" (stolen from a photo). Can someone tell me how to make the images display in the post? Do I just use html??

Thanks for looking:

Nice!, I like the girl with the hood and purple-ish skin. As for making images show up, click on that little mountain icon and paste your link in there.

Hey Thanks! The story so far then (still some work to do on both of these):

Here's a WIP, he's an older Man-at-arms type. Unlike the previous two images, I've used some reference - the pose is from a nude from, the face is inspired by a Hans Holbein portrait, and the tabard and armour is inspired by a painting by Weyden (a 15th/16th century artis). I've quickly drawin in the extra bits that I haven't blocked in yet. He's going to have a big kick-ass Zweihander. His armour is all black painted in gothic style (circa 1480 gothic)

New, more painterly background...I'm gonna try to fix the remaining bits on these images this week.

Hey y'all - changed the backgrounds on Cat knight and purple lady (Angel of Vengeance). I've also added a couple of images to the gallery. cya.

And now for something ompletely different. Here's a landscape that I've started on - same scenario as the characters. As usual, lots of work to do on this still. Working on it in Painter, using (re-interpreting?) some photo ref. The building reference I made quickly in 3ds Max.

Wow! You're the man when it comes to render metal! Nice! :D

Pretty cool stuff, I like the mood of the girl with the sword...

Hi all, been a while, I've been working on some 3d stuff, learning XSI (I used to use SoftImage 3d many moons ago). Getting tired of 3ds Max and it's poor handling of lots of geometry, and clunky interface. Plus I could afford to buy XSI!

Anyway, I've been revising some designs, here's one:

Thanks mainly go to my wife Irina for all of her comments. She really doesn't pull any punches. Anyone else? Upper cut? Left Hook? :)

Here's another little tidbit for y'all: a piece of actual concept art! I'm using this as a design for a 3d game character, I'm trying for a soldier type that has something in common with a greek hoplite, but is more contemporary in appearance. My intention with all of these pieces is to present an "alternative reality" rather than "fantasy". Say NO to giant shoulder pads and 2 foot long ears (unless they're bunny ears. Those are Hot!) Comments welcome. Just bear in mind that this ain't ever going to be a finished 2d piece.

Here's a little trip down memory lane for y'all. These are some concept drawings that I did for a cyber-punk type MMO back in 2001-2. Hope you like them. I think about 5 people have seen these drawings up until this point! They were all done pretty quickly. P.S I have no plans on doing any work on these (they are really old), but feel free to comment/crit though! I'll absord the comments for future consideration.

hi there, I've been hammering away at some 3d lately, but as a break I'm working on a few quick landscape sketches in PS. Each one of the first three is inspired by a piece of "classical" artwork, "Moonlight Night on Dneper" by Kuinji, "Enigma" by Gustave Dore, and "Hermit" by Nesterov.
