View Full Version : Character Concept - Hoverboarder

This is for a school im applying for. The task is to design a character and draw from at least two angles and then closeups on the details.
Now im trying to come up with a design i can commit to. This sketch is where im at. Its a hoverboarder obviously from the future. Not sure about the design though. On one hand i think he got to few details and equipment. But on the other, he got all he needs why put on a lot of meaningless shit.

The dude doesn't read as a hoverboarder for me. That is, nothing about him seems useful for a hoverboarder. Maybe the skull (nice addition) refers to him being hardcore or suicidal or something. Ask yourself how you would feel being a hoverboarder.. what would impress the ladies? What would make you go faster? What would insure your safety after a biff? Things like that... Personally I'd wear a speedy helmet before a speedo can. Speaking of meaningless shit, I agree that your design's details should be there for a purpose, I would try to "push" the character so that my Grandma would figure out that he's a hoverboarder... exaggerate stuff - make it obvious.
The dude looks good, but not hoverboarder good - keep at it!

Thanks for your reply. You make many good points. About the helmet, i'd wear it too, but i think it suits this guy with a bandana with a skull on, cause hes the risktaking type :) But at least he got kneepads and groinprotection :)
I added the cloak cause it would look cool when he is goin really fast on his board. Also gave him a belt for practical things such as keys for his appartment and stuff. And goggles so he wont dry out his eyes when boarding fast.
I think pretty much everything on him is motivated, but i dont think your grandma would guess on a hoverboarder (not an easy task though but i understand what you mean).
Maybe I need to push it even more but how?

A little update. Made this in painter. The goal with this was to keep it clean and simple. Next I'm gonna do a pic of him posing with his hoverboard in color, showing some more details and enviroment.
