Funny, I painted the sketch below yesterday for the Day of the Dragonslayer, when half-way I got the idea I painted yesterday. So today I just had to add a few bits and bobs to it.

I hope it instills a bit of fear by -not- showing the red dragon. What the mind makes up is often a whole lot scarier then what you can see.

15 minutes, PS

04-26-2006, 03:57 PM
Here is my entry (first post in these forums, I hope I will find out how to send the image...)
35 minutes painting.
Photoshop and Wacom tablet.

Red Dragon

Hope you like it :)

04-26-2006, 05:05 PM
wacom, photoshop cs2 and aprox. 35-40 min

Red dragon (

04-26-2006, 05:13 PM
PAINTBOX: Drama! I like it!

THIS ONE took about two hours! (I know, you'd think it'd be better, wouldn't you?) , 'updated' from yesterday's DSG. His name is 'Red Dragon'... :D
Feel free to disqualify me.....

04-26-2006, 05:31 PM
Gah! I have an idea for this one, I hope I have time for it!

Paperclip: Oh man that is nasty! In a good way of course, but I wouldn't want to run into one. Great job! Nice texture work.

04-26-2006, 05:33 PM
paintbox - thats evil!
ChristinaRH - awe - so cute!
paperclip - isn't that Yeti?

well, PS/wacom about 30 min

04-26-2006, 05:34 PM
i went 5 mins over the limit but it turned out pretty well compared to my usual unsharp stuff:

ps | 40mins

i put on some textured patterns with the healing brush .. its a very fast and simple way ...ill try that more often i think :)

clippy: reden sie nur .... reden sie nur.... mich störts nicht, denn ich muss immer lachen wenn sie deutsch reden Frau Ryan :D

04-26-2006, 05:44 PM
Here's my doodle of today. Damn textballoons are in the wrong order.

Red dragons are known for their bad temper and killing their partners.

25min // photoshop+wacom

Paperclip: Still a bit strange seeing a yeti in a thread saying "red dragon"!
Daw: Nice could be a flyer for a shop/pub.
Paintbox: The unknown is scary indeed. I bet there's a bunny behind it with red contact lenzes and blowing his sigaret smoke out of his nose :p

04-26-2006, 05:59 PM
paperclip - isn't that Yeti?

Yup, it is....but remember, I said his name was Red Dragon? He's a Chinese Samurai Yeti (CSY)!

CSYs use their ugliness as a weapon- they LOOK dim and scary, but in reality they are masters with the katana....and as light as air and each movement is beautifully choreographed, they look as if they are flying through the air......

Seriously though...:

Daw: I really like yours, it makes a great poster!
Vahn: Sehr ist schlau! 'Wed Dwagon'....awww... aber warum sieht er bose aus? (ich hoffe, du stortet nicht meinen deutschen praktizieren. :D )

Uziel: Lol! :applause:

04-26-2006, 06:15 PM

04-26-2006, 06:51 PM
Really nice Dragons all of you. Did you know Godzilla had a Grandma?

04-26-2006, 06:55 PM

My Dragon, some 20 mins with a T400 tablet in Photoshop CS.

04-26-2006, 07:48 PM

04-26-2006, 07:59 PM
Hi guys, first post on the daily sketch thread.
My pic: Little dragon having a smoke break. 15min with mouse.

04-26-2006, 08:13 PM
35 minutes Painter IX

04-26-2006, 08:27 PM
I always seem to get bogged down in the details. Here's my dragon at 35:
Then plus 10 minutes:
Created in Painter, inspired by Sue.

04-26-2006, 08:32 PM
Did another one 35 mins

04-26-2006, 08:55 PM

Another of my cute explorer making a very unexpected discovery. Should actually do a similar one for Samus and the last metroid ;)

04-26-2006, 09:02 PM
Here is my first post on CGTalk ever.
I thought a sketch would be a good start.
So here is my 35min. red dragon:

35min / PS7 / Intuos3

04-26-2006, 09:06 PM

Ok, here is the blasted, ugly thing. Probably 35 mins - which is embarassing considering. I didn't use any reference, I should have, but since they are made-up creatures I thought that if I referenced something than it wouldn't be my own.

All I did was use a chinese dragon as inspiration, and made it more serpent-like.

IT'S GOD AWFUL :((((((((((((

But, I'm here to get better. Have at me.

04-26-2006, 09:32 PM
Very simple...almost not worth posting... :)

15 mins Photoshop

I like yours Vizon ... maybe add some blur to the tail for depth...very cool though :)

04-26-2006, 09:52 PM
heres mine @ 35ps + graphire

04-26-2006, 09:53 PM
Once again, I really like your work Kaylon! Simplicity is not such a bad thing when used properly.

Here is my Red Dragon, I think he's circling some prey or something...

PS + Wacom 9x12 + ~30min

Kind of ironic that a mythical creature can make me think that I should work on my anatomy more...:D

04-26-2006, 09:57 PM
Welcome StoneHill, nice to see you here. Extremely good pic for 15 minutes with a mouse! makes me think I am cheating using a Wacom...

the full 35 mins, painter 8... would like to get back to this fellow and give him something to stand on

04-26-2006, 10:19 PM
At work and didn't feel like speding time doing something crappy in PSP.
Pencil 35min

Vahn - Great Improvement on your placeholder

04-26-2006, 10:59 PM

PSP 7 | intuos2

vizon, darksuit: nice ones

04-26-2006, 11:39 PM
Wow, Vizon, I love your dragon's expression... one of the most beautifully evil grins I've ever seen! Vahn's is brilliant too. I wish I could comment on them all but my computer's in a weird mood and a lot of them aren't loading. :( I'll have to try again tomorrow.

Here's mine anyway.

photoshop, wacom tablet, 35 minutes

04-27-2006, 12:16 AM
Seeing some nice pieces :).

My Red Dragon, I kept thinking of Red Baron so i mixed the two ideas, i really dont like my backround but i kinda got what i had in my head.

Photoshop, Wacom

30-40 minutes, finished at 30 but then kept re doing the backround couldnt get it how i wanted.

04-27-2006, 12:33 AM
I like yours Vizon ... maybe add some blur to the tail for depth...very cool though :)

Good advice. I tweaked it but Photobucket's being a jerk about updating the image without shrinking it tiny (for no apparent reason because it's well within the size limitations). So sorry I am unable to show you.

LittleTigger - ha ha ha ha ha ha! Awesome.

04-27-2006, 01:10 AM

Painter / tablet / 30 min.

04-27-2006, 01:20 AM
Hi, after 35 mins PS / Wacom here is the result:

04-27-2006, 02:30 AM
Ew, ew. 30 minutes, Painter.

My first real sketch in Painter, it didn't turn out right.

I may try this again in Photoshop.

04-27-2006, 02:59 AM

30 ish minutes, painter and photoshop.

04-27-2006, 07:03 AM

Hello everyone! Again beautiful works you all have wow!! GSmiley thanks for your help about using hard edged brushes so as to not have such a blurred look. I'm going to have to sit down and really play with the brushes I have to see what works best..I really appreciate the help!

Have a great Thursday everyone :) Keep up the inspiring work!

35 mins PS7

04-27-2006, 08:49 AM

2:d version [Red Dragon Vodka] 35min, Photoshop, mouse.

04-27-2006, 10:29 PM
Is it unfair to try my hand at simple colourgradients before I start? just to decide?

I can't work with colour... :surprised

04-27-2006, 11:55 PM

Photoshop 7
35 minutes
Didn't have a chance to do the face but I think 35 minutes was probably enough time to... I was just slacking today mainly because this is my second attempt at a dragon. Obviously I like more eastern-style dragons. Probably from my early years of living in Japan

04-27-2006, 11:58 PM
oh yeah, lucavi, you're a genius
I love it

04-28-2006, 12:32 AM

Cypherx and PtMae, thank you. Lovin' the dragons. Danielh and Vahn too.

04-28-2006, 04:49 AM
lukavi, isn't it "k"? or has my memory gone sour again. :P good to hear you are doing well! Look at my status, I been here since 2002! god..I feel old here. cheers mate

04-28-2006, 05:05 AM

Nice entries guys.

04-28-2006, 05:28 AM
Sorry about the huge file size, ArtRage is wierd, and GREAT work everyone.

DanielH68: That's amazing what you did in just 8 minutes, I don't know how you got it done.

Bumskee: Absolutely beautiful. great composition and textures, I love how the dragon in this and the slayer image just fade into the background. Kudos!

04-28-2006, 06:57 AM minutes sketch,scan,coloring

Hehe, thx cyphrex `^_^

04-28-2006, 02:46 PM
Yeah Vyse, the strokes are incredible, so painterly but so confident - I love both of your pieces (the flower in the Poem thread, too)

Really nicely done!!

04-28-2006, 09:54 PM
Hey, my first post!

About 30 minutes in Photoshop using a Graphire 3.

04-29-2006, 01:03 AM
Wow. Great piece, Pixelzero for the first time.

04-29-2006, 03:01 AM
I wanted to do another... Forgive the attatchment thing, I currently have no hosting.

Painter/PS, no idea on time.. bout a half hour.. I wandered off and browsed alot.. had a snack.. fried an egg.

04-29-2006, 06:13 AM
That's funny, last time I sawa somebody who didn't know the time it took them, the had gone on a walk and fried an egg!

04-29-2006, 11:02 AM
Yeah, cool work, guys!
This seems to be a good place for practicing. Was a great experience to paint under time pressure :)

04-30-2006, 02:32 AM
Tried it out again, in Photoshop.

I forgot to keep track of time, but I'm sure it was more that allowed. :hmm:

04-30-2006, 09:32 AM
Sylanya, I love the way you used the deep red colors. It looks awesome, and I like the idea too that the woman is wearing the mask.

Gizmodus, now thats some funky sketch.

pixelzero: Not bad for you're first post ;) I like the idea though

Vyse_soa, How can I put it this way, but you're mood and atmosphere is fantastic :)

nards26, man you are a really inspiring drawer.

Finally, there's mine:
Photoshop 7.0, 34 (I forget sometimes, but Im sure its around 34) minute sketch, Wacom. The funny thing was I had to do aproximately 8 different sketches because they all failed.
I'm not very fond of drawing dragons :(

After 40-50 minutes long, I redit a few touches and stuff:

And one of my eight failed attempts:

04-30-2006, 12:44 PM
 Hi Toniko awesome art stuff u got there. keep up the good work man thanks for ur kind feedback to my drawing' cheers!

05-01-2006, 09:31 AM
Much more time than allowed (bout 2hours) (but it started as a sketch, really, i just forgot about all those time restrictions:-)

05-02-2006, 01:03 PM
