redwolf : matte painting is not just painting enviroments, or enviroment elements like this one , I suggest you follow these steps
1: think about an aspect, , take a look at all the pro matte paintings around they are done in 16:9 HD resolution or aspect, not every of them but try not to work in a square compositions, or this vertical rectangle that makes a little hard for the viewer to travel
2: think of a center of interest and a focal point, in this case , that mountain is your focal point but not necesarily needs to be the only thing in the image, make it more interesting adding ellemtns that will lead you to the focal node.
3: the colors you're using are good, but always work with real photo reference, from sketching to a final matte painting
4: go here and learn more about traditional skills, composition colors, perspective, this link of lanscape composition rules will certanly help you ,
anything else you need just let me know

Second attept looks better than the first, but a long way.
Something else to think about: When I look at your image, my eye is being led towards the mountain top, because of the brighter snow, and then straight off the edge of the painting by the light source further to the right. Try to balance your composition more as you work on it, and include some elements on the left so that there is enough to keep the eye on the painting.
I look forward to seeing any more progress.
