im not satisfact - i have made many mistakes because i was hurry up..
but finaly i have to done with this. i wish to have more time...
I have made many mistakes but i realy try to make it good. (and i now that some things are not...)

rendering is week beacuse i cannot spend more time on this. (

ortographic views: ( ( ( ( (

rotation animation (

I deside before i will start any modeling i have to draw first few days - its not a reference exaclly for 3d work. This skeches i was draw based on 3d model and picrures from links on this challenge invitation - just for better knowlage of this greate sculpt.

Plan is:
-skeches for learning model
-skeches for refference for 3d viewports
-first fast medium poly model of David for posing and propotion- the base
-next this same model to zbrush for medium detailed hipoly David model
-second model(maded on first) medium poly with new topology - exaclly mached to details - like hairs for example.
-mapping this medium poly model - with no overall UV-( only 1poly can use part of texture.)
-finishing model in zbrush
-textures - in photoshop and zbrush with zaplink.
-rendering and comosition. (

Oh nice program

but is it possible in 3 weeks?
the anatomy is hardest section
if u can found the right topolgy in ur skeches u have done lots of it
i will follow ur thread

04-21-2006, 01:31 PM
hm... :) 3weeks - its not long.. but its afterhour work anyway..and for sure cant spend 3weeks on this - i hope i will finish this in 2 weeks

04-21-2006, 06:19 PM
this sure looks promising.
i'll definately keep an eye on you.

04-23-2006, 05:13 PM
finaly i pose my model - i used 7 camers and mach as posibble simple primitive object - for most important parts of body.
Now i can sketch refferences to viewports working planes.
I will draw on 6views with few light sets from scanview.
Time's run so i have to optimize my plan:)
I will make 1 model

Heh, it looks more like some sort of mathematical geometry experiment than an artistic endeavour at the minute)

04-23-2006, 06:16 PM
:) with real sculpt is much more matematical..its lot of work time - plannig, mesuring etc.. i hate this plannig work but its usefull .

Rod Seffen
04-23-2006, 07:06 PM
Yeah, but it's a pretty simple pose he's in, so I'm not sure you really need all those cameras and angles worked out. It's time that would be better spent modeling IMO.

04-25-2006, 01:44 AM
i just start modeling the torso,
preparing of the views takes some time but later you take this time back :) ( i hope: )

04-25-2006, 05:10 AM
next step of torso modeling (

04-25-2006, 05:14 AM
Looking very nice, I like how you draw your own references to better show anatomy. I'd do it if I was a good enough drawer.

Rod Seffen
04-25-2006, 07:07 AM
THa's looking good, I'm current;y modeling exactly the same area, and it's very tough.

04-25-2006, 05:41 PM
Right side of torso is almost done - ofcourse later i will draw details in the zbrush ( (

04-25-2006, 05:58 PM
That's looking awesome!

04-25-2006, 07:47 PM
i start back of torso - i will mirror this on right side and change some of shapes and topology in the groins section especially. this image shows the technicue of modeling - first out sides of muscles are from line or plane and fill them by edge modeling in polymesh using bridge etc.. (

04-25-2006, 09:46 PM

04-25-2006, 09:48 PM
nice modeling, nothing to crit so far

04-26-2006, 09:13 AM

04-26-2006, 10:48 AM
hey staszek!

this looks really good. very good job on the torso.
got nothing to crit.

04-28-2006, 03:24 AM ( (
i had a little pause in work on this but i do what i can - its next steps in progress,

Rod Seffen
04-28-2006, 07:35 AM
I wish you'd post a shaded view so we can see it properly. Wireframe doesn't really tell the story.

04-28-2006, 07:55 AM
OMG! What a lovely torso, this is a great challenge.

04-28-2006, 10:48 PM
..more excellent work!

04-29-2006, 08:17 PM
i cant wait to get it to zbrush:)

04-29-2006, 08:38 PM

Rod Seffen
04-29-2006, 09:50 PM
Jeez, the legs were fast) That's looking really great now. I might have to use zbrush for details myself, just to keep it fair)
One thing I notice is that you seem to be modeling it more like regular anatomy, while I am copying the anatomy of the sculpture as closely as I can.

04-29-2006, 10:06 PM
i have made many man :) but not this technicue - anatomy in this sculpt is umbeliveble - diferences of the right and left side - for example groin in this pose in the right side lasts are hiden in the guts:) on the left are spread - just example

this figure is very dificult for me - espetialy pose - little mistace and looks wrong..

details -there is many but i belive with zbrush i will expose them.

Rod Seffen
04-29-2006, 10:19 PM
There are not really many details that can't be easily modeled in, apart from some veins in the hand and forearm.

04-29-2006, 10:26 PM
It's starting to look really nice, I like your technique. Keep it coming

04-29-2006, 10:54 PM
Your technique is very complex ( for me ) but it serves you very well. Very nice!

04-29-2006, 11:16 PM
haha thats true :) its not very workflow - anyway we will see how itworks in the finish line.

04-30-2006, 04:44 AM

04-30-2006, 04:49 AM
looking good man!!

04-30-2006, 04:49 AM
It seems like you over exaggerated the details, if you look at the scanview, the muscles on the chest dont look very much like the muscles on yours. I havent looked at the rest but I would work on that.

I know mine isnt any better, but I know you have the skills to fix it if you tried.

04-30-2006, 01:10 PM
yes - there is many diferences - i fix them :)

04-30-2006, 02:43 PM
TWO WEEKS TO GO! (MAY 15th):Hardcore Modeling Challenge: THE DAVID! (
Just a reminder

05-01-2006, 12:57 AM
dude, you're really an awesome modeler. maybe in a few years i can match that.

im guessing your using edge extrude?

great work so far, recreating a masterpeice isnt easy. (except im sure it was harder to make the masterpeice in the first place)

05-01-2006, 02:36 AM
very very good modeling  keep going
you can finish it. you got a good chance at wining this

05-04-2006, 08:38 PM
very very good modeling  keep going
you can finish it. you got a good chance at wining this

yes, you got a good chance, really nice model dude.

05-05-2006, 01:57 AM
i had very busy last few days and i cannot work on this - :) but today night i make unnecessary things :) i had chance to check technicue for hairs :)

now i have to make hands and head :) - and then to the zbrush for finishing model

05-05-2006, 02:13 AM
great progress, all those drawings and research are taking effect

ONE WEEK TO GO :The Hardcore Modeling MINI-Challenge #1: The David (MAY 15th) (

05-09-2006, 11:14 PM
test render - on low quality - for higher need more time :) last week so i have to sit in hard because i was work on this only 6days(after hour ).. but i think i will finish at time with zbrush finishing and textures and nice render ( iHOPE : )

05-09-2006, 11:28 PM
Cool, I like your render, how exactly did you do it? Im trying to get a simmilar render in XSI, but I lack the knowledge of rendering.

Also it looks a whole lot more accurate than it did a week ago.

05-09-2006, 11:45 PM
just test - its simple radiosity on 60%, mesh of david is 25000tris for now.
i include screen from viewports with procesed radiosity on this mediumpoly mesh.
when i finish rest of body i will fix some things in zb. like muscle pinchnes, smothnes, details like veins, hairs finishing, nails etc

05-10-2006, 12:12 AM
Woah I dont even know what radiosity is, but im finding out. lol
I dont think there is radiosity in XSI, you can just fake it. :(

I found this though

Rod Seffen
05-10-2006, 07:08 AM
Nice render. THe muscles look a little too deep and bumpy in places, and his ass looks a bit saggy, it's very round and firm on the statue.

05-10-2006, 07:30 AM
diddo what oDDity said, and to add, I think his Right Leg can do with some tweaking. Especially the knee, it's too high. And his legs are lil too fat/thick/wide.

With that said, it's a great model, much better than mine. Godd Job!!

05-10-2006, 12:08 PM
oDDity - You right they are to bumpy and hard etc. In the oryginal muscles are more pinched and full, they create many specially 'lines' shapes - this i will do in zb on hihger polycount - round 2mln. i did little topology work on his ass: )

Blinder - Something is wron with this left leg should be ok

For now i atach some test renders - if you find someething let me now,

right hand, head, this is my priority now :)

I enjoy learning from your wires. Its looking great. Cant wait till you start the head.

05-11-2006, 07:12 PM
Virtuosity ( vbmenu_register("postmenu_3535651", true); Thx Virtuosity im glad then i can help. Im learnig much too in this hardcore modeling.
I attach printscreen from starting modeling neck.

05-12-2006, 01:46 AM
my current neck part progress :

05-12-2006, 05:49 AM
LOL, that's kind of funny, b/c I'm working on the exact same spot on David.

Rod Seffen
05-12-2006, 07:27 AM
It looks really painful the way you model, poly by poly like that, on such a dense mesh as well.
I couldn't do it. It's paying off for you though. Better hurry though, only a few days left for the head and hair and details...and I'd guess you aren't goig to do any texturing at this stage.

05-12-2006, 02:21 PM
Are those pictures unsmoothed? If I think a weekend for the head sounds like enough time, but shading? Cant wait to see it, I'm sure you'll pull it off.

05-12-2006, 05:08 PM
Im try to finish :) at time what i planed to do (i sacrifice my offing free weekend-again...).
Im using Max - edge modeling - looping, copyng, extruding, bridges, caps, weld - this is methods what i use to model face(after that to zbrush for finishing).
but hairs are scare me :) it will be insane hardcore modeling speed.

thx for support

Current progress:

Rod Seffen
05-12-2006, 06:44 PM
I didn't even try to copy the hair, I just made my own and gave it the same overall shape and volume as the statue. I don't think the small details of the hair is what makes or breaks the model..

05-13-2006, 12:19 AM
current progress:

05-13-2006, 12:44 AM
vey good observation skill indeed. the likeness is good
i believe you will be able to model the hair exactly too and finish the whole thing in time.

05-13-2006, 01:22 AM
thx fx81

my current progress:

05-13-2006, 02:50 AM
even though this is wip, ill shoot some crits anyways

the upper eye lids need to be little lower

and the lips look a little smiley, may be the chicks need less volume.

05-13-2006, 07:48 AM
right - and the eyes are too small

05-13-2006, 09:24 PM
I can only admire your commitment and stamina if you're going to spend the weekend modeling that hair poly by poly)

05-13-2006, 09:50 PM
Nose area looks odd

Lips look off from the angle its in

Chin needs to be flat in front (can't tell)

Other than that this is the best "modeled" head so far.

05-14-2006, 06:31 AM
Yes there is many mistakes, im working on face all the time to - now i have finished medium poly moedel of hairs too and i conect it with body and go to zbrush fo finishing and correction of all model
i will update next steps

05-14-2006, 07:45 PM
i just finish my medium poly model of David.
Now i get it to zbrush for details like the sideburns details on the face, hairs, all of body - veins, nice nails etc.. etc and correction. ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( (

Very nice. One big problem I spotted is that the hair is very obviosuly mirrored. You should break that up a bit.

05-14-2006, 08:01 PM

just amazing. you modeled it quite fast and also maintained likeness and detail.

you will definitely get my vote as the winner, hands down.

05-14-2006, 08:30 PM

just amazing. you modeled it quite fast and also maintained likeness and detail.

that goes triple for me, excellent job on the hair.

You're amazing dude

Oh, by the way, the scanView isn't loading up for me either, so it's not your machine, I guess it has something to do with the server

05-15-2006, 02:45 AM
that goes triple for me, excellent job on the hair.

You're amazing dude

Yup I knew you were going to do a great job from the beginning when I saw your past work and the fact that you drew out your own refs. Awesome. Cant wait to see your final render, which should be soon I hope.

05-15-2006, 09:29 PM
Niiiiiice. Very nice, indeed.

nice work, one of the better entries.
only the dirt map seems a little too rough i think but i dont know if you got enough time to re-render

05-15-2006, 11:40 PM
yes you right fx81.
but now.. i cannot do nothing :)

Your hand is most well executed.
Wish good luck!

Rod Seffen
05-16-2006, 07:59 AM
Of course it is not perfect, it's not possible in the time, but it's very good. The hair is really great as well, I wish I had the stamina and concentration required to have done it properly, I'm regretting that I didn't now.
I'd say the weaskest part is the face, it doesn't really look like David, but faces require a lot of subtle tweaking to achieve a likeness, and you kind of rushed yours in the last few days.
I'd say your anatomy is generally more accurate than mine, but I presented my finished product better then you did.
Also you used zbrush to add in the detials like veins etc, which I do think was kind of taking the easy way out. Drawing veins using projection master in zbrush is extremely easy, it requires only basic photoshop skills, while modeling them in polygons requires some delicate skill.
I know you had not much time left at the end, but you always said from the start you were going to do the details in zbrush.

05-16-2006, 06:25 PM
jest szacun :)

05-19-2006, 10:34 PM
I can't belive that someone could do something like wonderfull.
Great work here man....Very are an ARTIST!!! Trust me
