View Full Version : Back into 3d modeling

Well, its time for a little story fellow modelers. I am now 17 years old and a junior in highschool, I have had a love for 3d modeling since a little kid (about 8 or 9 years old) and I remember I always thought about all the different characters and how they would look like in a game if I were to make one. The first program I ever got that was 3d modeling was bryce, I made a lot of landscape scenes in that. But at around 13 I got a copy of 3d studio max which was very complex compared to bryce or rhino and the other programs i previously used. I took off modeling to the best of my ability anything that came to my mind, or should I say... any tutorial that I could find on the net. I did 3d modelling pretty much every day for about a year, just messing around and such, then trying to accomplish the thing i mostly wanted to create and was the hardest to me to do well was a humanoid. I started with trying to make a torso, then when I got that to looking ok for me (it actually looked terrible, but not to my eyes) then I went on and added legs and feet and arms and hands which looked again ok, but they were all out of proportion and didnt even look like human limbs almost. I then went and tried making a head which didn't come out too well :-P... so after agonizing over trying to make a human I became frustrated that I couldn't create an organic model like that good so I took a break for about a year.

This time I started right back in trying to make a human, the results were a little better this time, but I posted the model on forums and such and people put in very long lists of creative critisicms that overwhelmed me and I saw that I couldn't make anything good.

To make a long story short, I went on and off of 3d modeling throughout the course of 4 years and recently I just got lightwave as a new program because I figure the college i go to will probably make me work in either 3dsmax or lightwave, so I might as well learn a new program while I'm at it. I'm just hoping that I am able to create a good looking humanoid, I have tried a head but it didnt turn out so good, I was watching a video tutorial and 1/4 of the way through it I was just like what the heck, im just gonna finish the head how I want to do it, it doesnt look that hard. So i ended up messing up the model and I'm guessing have way too many polygons than needed and wasn't sure as to how to add details such as the lips or like the indent people have right above their lip leading to their nose, or part of the nose. This is before I discovered the band saw pro tool which I think would have helped me, because before I was selecting one polygon and using the knife tool where I needed it which messed up the polygons.

I am starting a body now without a tutorial (my goal is to create a muscular looking character, my friend who I have known since around 5 has inspired me, his first human was like a samurai, muscular and had a sword and such) so im trying without a tutorial, I have 2 ref pics, a front and side and they are scaled to fit eachother's height and such. I have the basic shape, I am just pondering as to how I will create the detailed muscles such as the abs and biceps and the calf muscles.

I guess I just needed to get that out, I feel as if I am the only person who has troubles with organic modeling, I don't know if I dont have an eye, or if Im just not cut out to be 3d modeling... 3d modeling is my only love though and would be so happy to do it as a job after college.

I can make other objects, like household appliances, landscapes, architecture etc fine, just organic modeling, specifically humans I just cant grasp as to how to do it, here are pictures of what I have so far on the character, any feedback as to how it is looking as far as polygons and how it is set up and such would be appreciated, and any tips on adding details to it I would really appreciate, thanks for reading this :)

hi there, another 17 year old here also, regarding your problem with muscles, maybe you should take a look at the entire human muscle system to get a good idea how to construct a torso. my first human body looked very similar to yours (though yours is much cleaner).

If you are aiming for a detailed model, try following along the contours of the muscle at the abdominal region and add more edges(or lines if you prefer to call it) to it, painstakingly


just in case you are wondering how mine went...I was aiming more towards cartoonish than realistic though

yeah, ive decided im gonna try making a cartoonish character, and learn a little animation, then start learning about the human muscles and try to fix this guy up later
