Hi i'm stumped with light and material setting for vray. What i'm trying to achieve is a lightbulb behind paper, any suggestions greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of different threads over at the chaosgroup forum dealing with this very topic. I found them to be very usefull. Head over there and search a little.

Good luck.

If this is a still image, I've gotten nice effects from taking material (say a cream white) and putting a little bit of refraction on it and then making the refraction glossy (like 0.5), this will diffuse the light that comes through it. So if you have a sphere with a vray light meterial behind inside the lamp shade and the multiplier is kicked up, then it will look like a light bulb is on inside the lamp.
