So I've been having a hard time getting light linking in MR with Maya 7 to work. Now, I understand from a few that it does indeed work but I cannot figure out how. I've unlinked the lights from the objects, I've tried unlinking them from the actual shaders and nothing works.

I even checked the render globals where the 'Export Light Linker' option is to ensure that it is actually on, which it is. However, I still get nothing. What am I doing wrong or have they just put the 'Export Light Linker' in the render globals to tease us into thinking it is working, yet it does not?

if you wanna use MayaLightLinking with mentalray you have
to use shaders that explicitly support it. the mib_shaders
for example does not. so you have to locally assign the lights
you need via their interface and not using the relationship editor.

ie, .. the Maya native shaders do not (blinn, phong, lambert, phongE, etc.....) ... ?

well no, buildin shaders work correctly.
no problems here.
