I am trying to do sci fi classic 70's 80's city like from Dune or original Star wars
It is still wip so any sugestions are welcome

hey zoki this is a great concept, the mood is really good as well as the technique, the only thing that I would suggest is that you need lots of texture detail , and shading variation, everything seems to be the same material , you need some different materiasl as metals. concrete, plastics etc, their highlights will add realism . great work

Nice, that looks a bit 3D, just on a hunch, did you create that and paint over it a bit? It's rare to see a painting so clean, without texturing. Whereas 3D often has a lack of texturing, because hell, who wants to UV map a whole ****in' city ya know?

James -yes this is right on , this is my main goal for it , making different materials dirt, usage marks...

Looking really cool, I guess all I can say is keep plugging away in photoshop adding detail, oh and maybe you could populate the city with a few people. It really helps sell the scale.

Thank you so much for those pictures. Here is a question, what did you use to get that "fog pass" I would really like to know. What techniques etc. I can make the other three easily, I just don't know how to make a fog pass, is it using some kind of Z-Depth plugin or what?

fog is rendered in maya with volume primitive cube
and all geometry has surface shader applied so it is not affected with light

yes... very nice... ppl and texture will definitly set the scale of the piece.

How long have u been at it for this piece allready?

zoki : the image is of course looking much better with detailed textures, but in my opinion you have som many glares or shining metal, if you are going to use this glares try to colorize to the suns color, in this case a little bit orange can blend them better, cause metal is a reflective surface, it has the whole sky color to reflect and sun's color as well. some color variation would help , in some building , as I see it is a big city made of just one big metal block

That looks very good!
On the few places the buildings look quite plastic. Despite this, the image is great!

Wow, that is very good, I really like it, Cheers to you zoki :-).

Not much to crit, if Ralph Mcquarrie were designing Star Wars in a modern day digital production enviornment, this is what it would look like. Very good work, and thanks for your help on the depth passes.

Wow !! you really nailed the contrast / color balance on this one... great update !!

You're highlights really help define composition by making the elements stand out. You have captured the desert harsh sun feel very nicelly.

the new version is better in my opinion, all matches perfectly , I specially like a lot the haze at the distance and general fog or air density , great one zoki !

really great progress you made there, i like the second version a lot better. Really great colors you used for the painting. Only suggestion i'd have would be to ad some air traffic to the scene in order to make it more alive.

@JIII: I'm also using Cinema 4d and i think you can render a fog pass pretty easily. Just add a camera to your scene, define the depth of field parameter, and before rendering just check the depth pass in the multipass options dialogue. This should work.

Yeah thanks, I was wondering how I could get the depth pass I was generating to extend, and I couldn't figure it out.

Sigh, multi-pass in cinema is so easy, but for some reason I can't ever REALLLY get it going like I should. Silly me,
