in this article about shark tale i've read something about the exposure lights, you can read through all the doc, but what i intend is from page 5 to page 6 :

Can someone please explain those exposure lights to me .

Hint's are really apreciated.

I'll assume you are familiar with ambient occlusion. You can set up an ambient occlusion render layer by simply choosing that preset. This is what they refer to as "exposure". The trick is to render out that pass, then feed the result back into your lighting pass. One way to do that in maya is to load your pre-rendered occlusion sequence into a file-texture node using a camera-projection. The file texture is mapped to your light color, thus creating an "exposure light". The article describes failry well how this can work in practice. You can have many lights in your scene sharing the same projected occlusion, so it doesnt add alot to render times.

edit: Correction: I meant to write "mapped to light intensity" (not color).

And I should add that the 2nd part of this only works with the software renderer - unless someone knows how to get perspective (camera) projections to work in mentalray.
