04-07-2006, 10:47 PM
Hi Everyone! I'm working on a new art book called "Creature Sketches" and I wanted to show some of the stuff from the book here.

This thread will be dedicated to the making of the Creature Sketches book and will have plenty of WIPs and sketches which I will be updating constantly so stay tuned!

To see more info on any of my art books CLICK HERE (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/books.html)

Here's the first wip that I'll be showing... it's about a mysterious black swordsman battling monsters. It started out for a DSG but I liked it so much, I decided to explore the idea further.

Great idea, going to be watching this thread. :) Interesting how you build up to colourcontrast.

Looks like you learnt a lot of cool shapes from drawing animals too, the little hands on the ogre and so on. Love this stuff.

jmBoekestein - Hey thanks very much! Creatures are fast becoming my favorite thing to draw again!

This is really cool bob....:applause: I can't help feeling there should be more of a shadow of the beast though....

I really, really like the design of the monster. Great job there!

04-11-2006, 12:44 PM

04-12-2006, 04:19 PM
here's another sketch...
I was in a funny mood when painting this. I was thinking it was kind of a doggy-tiger-mouse-pig but frankly I have no idea!

04-12-2006, 04:27 PM
ROFL ~ this promises to be a great thread. Subscribed! :)

04-12-2006, 05:47 PM
As always, awesome work.
Looking forward to your updates man.

04-13-2006, 02:21 PM
Rebeccak & Roberto - Hey Thanks for checking in you two!!

Here's another rare creature. I call this little guy a "Baterpillar Ferret".

04-13-2006, 02:47 PM
Haha look at those tiny legs!

04-14-2006, 06:30 PM
ROFL ~ that's awesome! Ever considered writing a children's book, Bobby? I'm sure it would be terrific!

Cheers, :)

04-14-2006, 06:40 PM
I second what Rebecca has said.

Here is a freebie...
It could be a tale of a girl who goes to an Alien planet and sees all sorts of alien creatures.
And maybe at then end she realizes that the animal she misses the most is her pet dog?

04-14-2006, 11:15 PM
Lamster - Thx!

Rebeccak - Actually I'm working on a childern's book right now!

Roberto - Hey thanks! Sounds like a lovely story. Perhaps in the future.. hopefully no one will take it by then.

here's an update

04-15-2006, 12:53 AM
Great work on the doggy-tiger-mouse-pig creature! I think that one is my favorite of the thread so far. Can I ask- which pencil do you use for sketching? I'm guessing 3B or 4B?

04-15-2006, 01:05 AM
I simply must have a baterpillarferret. MOMMY BUY ME ONE.

Did you do that grass by hand, or do you have grass brushes?

04-15-2006, 02:00 AM
Paperclip - lately I've been using Col-Erase pencils. The original sketch was done with a Col-Erase
djtrousdale - thanks for checking in. The brush I used for the grass is one of my custom brushes but it is not specifically designed for painting grass.

here's another update. grass has been worked some more.

04-15-2006, 03:26 PM

04-15-2006, 04:20 PM
amazing good joB!

04-15-2006, 06:07 PM
The color palette in the last one seems rather off to me...not sure what it is...maybe too much of that greeny color in the yellow and also in the grass? Is it green grass or a yellow fur..or both...? I think using a different color for the cute daschundpillar would be a good idea. I really like the texture in the bush (?) though! Is that watercolor?

04-16-2006, 01:21 AM
malibubob - thx bob!

Paperclip - Thanks for the lovely comment! I was thinking the exact same thing! You'll see the change in this next update. The bg is a big mix of textures and adjusted and painted some more in Photoshop.

04-16-2006, 02:29 AM
I really like your stuff. Look forward to the childrens book!

04-16-2006, 01:46 PM
Kavelioc - thx but this is not for the childerns book. That won't be out for a while

Here's another update. Should be just about finished. I'm pretty happy with it but I'm willing to hear some last minute suggestions.

this is the cover

Great to see the Work in Progress pics! It's very educational to see how the pros do it. thanks!

04-16-2006, 05:10 PM
airtiger - hey thanks! the book is looking very sweet. You'll like it

lasting memories - I'm glad you like the wips. thanks for the comment

Here's the next creature I'll be working on so stay tuned! I was thinking of a creature kind of like a Naked Mole Rat/Kangaroo with a sprinkle of a Bunny. This is what I came up with. I think it's gross and funny at the same time and I love it. Hopefully the final piece will be as good as the initial idea.

04-18-2006, 02:54 PM
lasting memories - thx for chking in again!

lamster - thanks lamster!

here's an update

04-18-2006, 04:49 PM
Funny one! It's such a cute creature and the color scheme is excellent. Like someone else said up there, it's good seeing your process. Can I ask you- where did you learn animal anatomy, was it mostly from life or from photo refs?

04-19-2006, 04:17 AM
Paperclip - not sure... I've always had a fasination with animals and creatures so I think I'd have to say a little of everything - photos, life, zoo, imagination, anatomy books.

here's another update

04-19-2006, 08:31 AM
Great update! Mind talking me through how you did that?
I think you should make the inside of the mouth a bit darker to separate it more from the gums. I think this is turning out fantastically, it's one of my favorite of yours so far! Soo gross, yet cute.......can't....tear...eyes...away...

04-19-2006, 05:03 PM
Thanks Paperclip - sure, what would you like to know? Good crit about the mouth... looks a bit funny to me as well.

here's an update: mostly bg details

04-19-2006, 05:41 PM
Mostly about texture and finishing things off...any tips would be useful!

Can you tell I'm a sponge leeching information off my favorite artists?! I'm suprised I haven't been kicked off this forum yet! :D

EDIT: Actually, you know what? I think you need to give him lips- that's what's causing the mouth area to look weird....

04-20-2006, 03:19 AM
Paperclip - the texture in the bg is a combination of a whole bunch of textures.. rocks, concrete, crumpled up papers... set to different settings and different opacities. It'd take some time to get into. Finishing off things is mostly about painting in half tones and painting in edges where needed. It's about clarifying things that might confuse the viewer.

here's another update

04-20-2006, 01:29 PM
hehehe this is very funny! Nice job there, keep it up...

\nothing to crit so its a quilte short comment :)\

04-20-2006, 01:40 PM
Maybe make the eyes a bit bigger, like in the original concept sketch? Right now they look like they could just be two spots in an 'eye' area....

Thanks for your tips and this is turning out well- it should make the front cover of your next book!

04-20-2006, 01:40 PM
Digital B.
I don't think I've replied to this thread, but it's definitely something fun, and I've enjoyed poking my head in from time to time. That be all.

04-24-2006, 01:58 PM
BrutalMonk - cheers

paperclip - thanks for the suggestion! I'm keeping the eyes like that but I definitely appreciate the constructive crit. I was thinking of putting this guy on the back cover.

cyphrex - hey thanks for leaving a comment :)

Happily anticipating your next piece!

05-20-2006, 01:42 PM
top character design, your designs should be used in 3d feature animation, that would rock!

05-21-2006, 11:54 AM
That last one is so adorable. I'd love to see him at a bus stop with a bus like a wagon pulled by a snail or something. :D

05-21-2006, 12:00 PM
renderwhite - hey thanks for the nice compliment!

Paperclip - lol.. great idea!

The CREATURE SKETCHES BOOK (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/books.html) arrives this Friday!

WilburLoyd - thanks! you've made my day better with your comment :)

05-25-2006, 01:38 PM
These new ones are just great, they're so simple yet so good looking. I love how in this last one the purple guys mouth fits right into the blue guys forehead-lip indentation

05-25-2006, 05:58 PM
The top right one in the last image reminds me of your greyscale amphibian. :D It's so cute!

This is a big departure from your usual stuff, may I ask why the change?

May I also ask how you did the 'tiger-beast' fur texture? I love it!

05-25-2006, 06:17 PM
My favorite is the one that sits on its tail :D

05-27-2006, 03:17 PM
aldog - thx!

paperclip - For me personally, I don't really concentrate too much on style. That (style) comes naturally. I'm much more interested in exploring. These new ones were an exploration in 2d shape design and the mixture of flat textures. The orange beast's fur was done with a custom brush in Photoshop

djtrousdale - hey thanks. That's one of my favs too

The books were delivered to my house yesterday and are now avalible! CLICK HERE (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/books.html)
