View Full Version : Mental Ray, Lighting problem, help !!!

Hey guys, Here is model i rendered in mental ray 3dsmax, im getting problem around nostrils, the lighting not shading them.
Here are my settings and a shot, anyone know whats going on ?

Looks like a bias of 10 is too big for the nose. Try lower numbers.

personally I hate shadow maps just for this kind of problems.
but jeremy I'm sure use them from about a decade or so, so
follow his guidance. :)
I'd use an area light shadow. if you don't need a big area most
of the times is faster and more reliable than shadow maps.
or do an occlusion pass, the nostrils will filled up with occlusion.

thanks guys, I switched look alot better, but i cant cant seem to work out how to get soft edges :shrug:

If you want to stick with a shadow map, increase the filtering. If you switch to raytraced shadows from an area light, then scale the area light up to soften its shadows. Check your software's manual to see if other light types have a 'radius' or 'angle' raytraced shadow option to make them softer.
