Hey guys !! here we can share our sketches !
as you all know sketching is the first step in to matte painting creation, this technique shows composition
color palette
and of course our 2D painting skills will be much stronger making our eye better and our hands faster to add details where ever you wish when ever you need it
the topic is free, probably most of the sketches we will see here will end in a fantastic high detailed matte painting, so let's start !!

I will star with a couple of my own sketches that I did to create some of the final matte paintings shown in my personal portafolio .

04 April 2006, 06:39 AM
very nice, I dig the lava cave

04 April 2006, 08:28 PM
hey people what's up with those sketches ,start posting here here!! share them

as I'm sharing this one , I found at ( as everyone kwons superman returns the movie will hit the theatres soon, but take a look at what I've found, some really nice sketches for Electronic Arts superman video game, from DUSSO and others that I can bet are done by dylan cole maybe  , check them out ,the details are insane
(click on thumbnail to enlarge the sketches)

thanks to ( for this

So I'm here with my "sketches"
I am really quite a noob in 2d painting on computer...

I really do need a tablet...

But anyway... here is one of my concepts...
A little update:

04 April 2006, 09:16 PM
hey Kutkin welcome aboard , , definitly a tablet is a must have , sketching without it is a pain in the ..... you know, thanks sharing your first sketch-concept
for this I think you need more detail, more human reference , I mean I can't understand how big or how far things are. or even what are they , are those mountains?? or some kind of architecture?
keep posting

04 April 2006, 09:40 PM
Hey, yeah tablet is defiently a must, especially if you gotta sketch
and/or doing matte paintings :P
I think i going to post something here too. later

04 April 2006, 04:47 AM
I have to get some wacom as soon as possible then:D

The "mountains" in the sketch are supposed to be some architecture underwater...
I haven't worked on it much so far, so it's hard to identify what is going on there:rolleyes:

And anyway, Jamie, your sketches are awesome!
I have seen your paintings and they are even better! Good work!

And peeps, keep posting sketches!

04 April 2006, 11:10 AM
Go for an Intuos if you got the money, Graphire works to!
(I have both :D )

04 April 2006, 01:20 PM
Go for an Intuos if you got the money, Graphire works to!
(I have both :D )

Indeed, I'm thinking about them.
Just have to check the prices and my wallet:D.

04 April 2006, 09:57 PM
Nobody seems to be posting any sketches, so here am I with another noob sketch

I was trying to make a lightening above the mountain and stormy heavy sky...

But I am not very happy with it...

And here is the original photo shot of Petrovy Kameny (Peter's Stones/Rocks) in Jesenky (CZ):)

Done in about 1/2 hour.
Some tips, how to do lightening would be great

At least something you can crit:)

04 April 2006, 07:16 PM
So, here is yet another concept sketch...

I tried to catch a mood.

About an hour using mouse:

A tiny update:

04 April 2006, 09:38 AM
very nice thread!
here are three of mine recent ones

04 April 2006, 11:41 AM
These are very nice concepts with nice mood.
In the first pictures i like the rock texture.
What brush is that?

Keep it up!
And keep posting images!

04 April 2006, 11:45 AM
thanks for reply kutkin!
I like your work too!
I think its a custom brush I made in photoshop with texture function turned on.

04 April 2006, 12:56 PM
I love the sketches... very inspiring.

Zoki -
Your first picture... Very nice. The rock becomes allmost detailed enough with a few brushstrokes. Though the compostion is a bit off. My leads toward the sun but as there isn't much to see there my eye almost instantly leads me to the cliff side on the right. Seems more interresting to look at.
The sunlight, flare, hides the detail of the structure standing on that cliff.. Make the effect more subtle. And preserve more detail there.. then it is quite good i think.

Second... i think the perspective is a off.. though i have to say the fading of the buildings in the distance is very nice. I think this was a test in depth, wasn't it? Now, fade the smoke the same as the building the smoke comes from. Then the smoke won't be the predominant character in the image.
The detail of the front most smoke now indicates that the focus is there while the front most building indicates the focus is there.
So, fade smoke or make the builing it connects too more detailed then the front building. You're getting there.
Third... Clouds are very nicely done.. They lead the eye nicely in the distance. But the ground needs to be tighter... Now it's fuzzy like the clouds or sometimes even worse. If you flip the image upside down and paint a horizon through the sun you'll have a seascape with very dark storm clouds over it. You'll see.
Tighten the ground up and this image will settle. Also paint some details in there like a vilage or something. It'll help with the scale of your scene.

Refine the image with the colorfull sky more, please.. the ground refinements are very good, especially since it's done with a mouse. Though what this image lacks is reference of scale and a point of interrest. Try to get something in there. Seems corny but again a village. It will be good training on perspective.

This doesn't mean that i paint better then you. But, it's just an observation. I really do like what i see here.

I paint roughly the same as you guys. In my paintings i have the same problems. Detail that shows scale and a point of interrest. It lacks stories, that's the right word i'm looking for. I'm having lot's of trouble with refining, adding details. They allways seem to be off.

I'll post one of my own and you'll see.

04 April 2006, 03:21 PM
Thanks, DarkstarR
looking forward to see your images!

04 April 2006, 04:12 PM
Howdy folks!
Since this is the sketch thread I thought I would throw my feeble attempts in here.
Trying to put down ideas as quick as I can.
usually 10 to 15mins each. I started out with about 20 sketches but these
are the ones I decided to keep and hopefully flesh out.
These can be both very relaxing and very frustraiting at the same time.
Alot like picking shapes out of the clouds and seeing what else happens.
Everything here is just building up from random strokes and shapes.
Heavy enfluence from Dylan Cole

04 April 2006, 04:33 PM
Nice concepts, man
Very moody
But I think they are all looking the same scifi way.
Try some landscapes!
keep it up

04 April 2006, 06:22 PM
hey is good to see this thread is finally growing, soki, you have a good sens in color here I specially like your first sketch the castle in the mountains I think is the best choice for a detailed matte painting , I would go for that one
polyfarmer1 : you have the idea for composition, the only thing is that it would be great to see a detailed sketch
what matters here is practice , always practice, search for reference, take a look at other artist sketches how they get the mood the details etc
keep posting people, hopefully we'll have a great matte painter posting his sketches soon , so we can all learn more

04 April 2006, 10:11 PM
nice polyfarmer1 !!!
I do not see a problem with the sci-fi way it looks, that just make it cool
but hey, listen to jamesvfx, practise practice and practice!
thats the only way!
I shouldnt complain, since i havent show any of my work
(doing website now :D )

04 April 2006, 01:57 AM
Cool thanks for the feeback. I'm just having alot of fun doing the roughs right now, trying to see what I can put down on the canvas as it comes into my head. If I find a nice composition then I'll start working on more color and such. I'm just not at the point where doing alot of detail is fun right now. Kinda stuck in the conceptual stage at the moment.
Can't wait to see more sketches from people tho! nice stuff so far keep up the good work everyone.

04 April 2006, 01:59 AM (

Hi, I was not going to post my sketch but I thought it would be better to improve by hearing comments or critics.

04 April 2006, 08:39 PM
very nice sketches everyone!

this is my first post and Im new into digital matte. Therefore Im very excited what you think of my two sketches. C&C absoultetly welcome...

04 April 2006, 10:08 PM
Welcome trialanderror!
These are very good sketches!
They are quite detailed and nice-looking.

Keep 'em posting!

Kutkin: Thank you very much for your kind words!!!

Here are two more sketches I did today. Any comments apreciated...

04 April 2006, 02:14 AM
thanks to the artists that have shown their sketches !
trialanderror: you have some nice ideas in this sketches I really like the castle in the night, very moody, nice composition and concept why dont you start with any of this sketches and create a detailed matte painting? any of them would be great
keep posting people soon I will have a painting challenge stay tuned !

04 April 2006, 05:26 AM
Hey guys! These are my frist sketchs! i just got my tablet a few days ago and can't see doing this stuff with out it!
I really like your stuff trailanderror it's got a good mood set and overall art feel! just as james said you should take one of the sketchs (specially your castle one i like that one) and hit er home!

04 April 2006, 08:08 AM
jamesvfx and yencaray: thanks a lot for your replies, encourages me a lot. I tried to make a matte out of my castle picture but totally messed it up. So I decided to make just a small update for the moment but Ill try to make a matte the next time after some tuts...

04 April 2006, 12:06 PM
The second picture has less depth...
The fog in front of castle is missing and other issues...
the path is too shiny...
And the tree in distance catching a lot of street lamp light makes it push towards... it's weird..
Give it more depth
Looking forward to progress

04 April 2006, 04:11 PM
thanks for observations kutkin, Ill try to fix that in my next version...

04 April 2006, 05:23 PM
here is a sketch i did one night when i couldnt sleep

questions or comments would be most appreciated

sorry for some reason I could not upload it using cgtalk and the tag for imgs is not working. =/

04 April 2006, 03:57 AM
Here is what i'm working on now..wasn't sure where to put this so i guessed here in sketches since that's what this will be.
I'm not using reference, I want to see what I can do with what's in my head then go back and compare with references and see where I made the mistakes.I find that I learn alot this way and i'm not bogged down by trying to recreate something.
I'm thinking of cropping it in from the right or maybe reworking that area completely.
C&C always welcome. I'm still working on this so offer up some suggestions and i'll throw them in there and see what happens.
I do have a question first....why is it, when ever I save something it is always darker than it appears in P.S.? Does it have something to do with that damn adobe gamma thing? Or is some sort of imbedded rgb thing, this image came out way darker than what i'm seeing in photoshop.

04 April 2006, 01:44 PM
Looks good, polyframer
The platform is little bit weird. Adding details will improve it definitely.

06 June 2006, 05:57 PM
My night cityscape sketch for The Domination project. It is not a sketch of a shot but of a background part of the city. Hope you like it...
Cheers, Kutkin

06 June 2006, 09:45 PM
Hey lots of great stuff here!

Thought i would post up a sketch that i did yesterday.

Keep up the great work everyone!

07 July 2006, 11:39 PM
Looks cool, Matellis.

Here two sketches made in Photoshop with Wacom.
Each within an hour.

I don't consider them very good, but hey... better than nothing:D

07 July 2006, 06:17 AM

This is just a sketch of something Im messing around with. I have some other ideas for the scene but to get that idea down it involves going out to the west end of my city with my digi cam.

Needs refinement.

(p.s. this thread rocks!)

07 July 2006, 08:53 AM
Very nice bright mood.
The cast shadows seems to be missing, though.
Good textures.
Overal it seems too flat to me.

07 July 2006, 09:08 PM
Bwaaa HA HA HA!!
Fear the spooOOoooky house. Blah!

07 July 2006, 04:08 PM

I like everything

This is a recent sketch I did after studying Dylans cityscape dvd. Nothing special, just trying to get used to the sketching thing.
Took around 15 mins with mouse

Matte Sketch:

10 October 2006, 09:20 PM
Hey guys,
my latest sketch:
Hope you like it.

10 October 2006, 07:59 PM
Very nice improvement Pavel.
Great colors Matt.
Space-Sprayer, try to darken the city a bit. It needs a little more contrast and more blueish color to fit I think.
Great sketch Adaminside. Already saw the camera movement through the matte.

So here's a sketch for a project that I'm planning to do, when I find the time.

What do you guys think ?

10 October 2006, 08:14 PM
Thanks, Marco
I like your sketch
Very nice light colors. Looks very nice overall.

10 October 2006, 10:55 PM
