View Full Version : CgTalk Daily Sketch 668 THE 30 MINUTE SKETCH: "Race Car CRASH"

04-04-2006, 01:16 PM
Roberto here: This week we will be assisting the good folks at the FXWARS forum.
We will be doing some concept art for their next challenge (RACE CAR CRASH!)

Please feel free to draw images of ANY time period, time present or future. The race cars, can be from any sport league (nascar, f1, go kart, Vulcan desert league etc) The idea is for the good folks at the FX wars forum to try to make your drawings come to life.

* You have 30, (count them 30!) minutes to do your sketch.
IF you go beyond the assigned time limit , you have to post WHATEVER you have done after the time has expired, along with the FINAL drawing

Also, I will add a new voting category, called THE FASTEST DRAW

30 minutes fly by too fast....

tried to practice with lighting....clearly need more practice :D

04-04-2006, 02:44 PM
PS - 15 min

Sorry, I couldn't spend more time, I live my drawing too much and a car crash is too violent for my mind to bear more than this time.

04-04-2006, 03:00 PM
I replace here a mistake of the Cgserver (load 2 time my post )

04-04-2006, 03:25 PM
Roberto (or any FXWARS guys 'n' gals),
Are you looking for single action shots, or storyboards? Any advice for us would be appreciated. I'm trying to get an idea of what would be most helpful, so that our sketches work well for what the FXWARS need.

04-04-2006, 03:38 PM
Today I just need single action shots,

During the week Ill ask for more specific things, like car & track designs, and maybe storyboards.

Vitreous- If you don't mind my asking, what program did you use for your post? It's a very interesting style.

04-04-2006, 09:33 PM
Here's mine. I'm definitely going to spend some more time on this, but after 30...

And here's after another 45. Fixed so that cars race counterclockwise.

04-04-2006, 10:33 PM
those 30 minutes really snuck up on me quick. I shouldn't have spent so long on the hills and bleachers in the background I guess.

30 mins:

60 mins:

04-04-2006, 10:34 PM

looks like artrage :)

04-04-2006, 10:45 PM
Ooooh very nice GSmiley! I especially dig how all the lines (including the smoke trails) point you right at the action. That's a nasty wreck.

04-04-2006, 11:41 PM
PS, bout 30 mins.

blah, i need alot of work. yay for practice :P

04-04-2006, 11:50 PM
Well, it's not at all my kind of soup, but here goes anyways - 35 minutes :

04-05-2006, 12:18 AM
Really nice ideas everyone, especially Vizon :D

04-05-2006, 02:17 AM
Ouch! Some of these entries just look painful! Really nice work guys! It looks so realistic.

04-05-2006, 02:18 AM
Nice work every bodyi like GSmiley the most :)

04-05-2006, 02:49 AM
Thank you.

04-05-2006, 03:42 AM
GSmiley, Vahn and DeeVad: great sketches! :) (
my messy excuse for a sketch is supposed to be a hover-car race through some kind of sewer tunnels *cringe* lol
30mins, photoshop 7

04-05-2006, 04:17 AM
too busy racing myself

get a free copy of this amazing race game here. enjoy im number 5432 in holland now lol;55772

04-05-2006, 09:21 AM
very good entries guys!

PS/wacom almost 30min - think it will hit that helicopter:scream:

04-05-2006, 02:02 PM
25 min, photoshop + wacom

It's my second serious attempt with my wacom. It'a hard to be good with that...a lot of practice needed.

So I am pretty happy with the result. I hope to respect the subject. I wanted to say that a car crash it's not funny like what we see on tv. Somebody is in the car and try to go escape.

Solarix: cool car
deaderthanred: very great style

Thanks wiggin. Actually it was what is known as a happy accident. I used painterIX(which I am still learning) and did a digital water colour layer with chalk/oils on a seperate layer which did that weird thing with the thick brushstrokes!

04-05-2006, 07:15 PM
Lol, may God bless the happy accidents.

04-05-2006, 09:56 PM
Mine took more than 30 mins. I suck at drawing cars...

Overall I think it took me around 45 minutes.

04-05-2006, 11:19 PM
wow - alot of good entries

daw - funny

Mine took more than 30 mins. I suck at drawing cars...

Overall I think it took me around 45 minutes.

I can so totally see this image as a very large thickly painted canvas - beautiful

04-05-2006, 11:59 PM
thank you.:)

04-06-2006, 12:26 AM
Deaderthanred; pipichu: Nice work! I particularly like deaderthanred's- I like the idea of racing in the sewers...wouldn't want to do it though. :D

04-06-2006, 07:59 AM
daw: very funny sketch lol i like how you expressed everything with very simple strokes

Louis.cho: thanks :) you really captured the heat in the colors in your sketch!

pipichu: :applause:

paperclip: thanks! :) the sewer idea was really random.. i accidentally blurred too much of the "road" while shading it, and it looked like water and i thought why not water? :D

04-06-2006, 08:22 AM
Daw - Great idea!
Lous.cho - love the look, the hand and colors almost remind me of some oldschool anime styles.
pipichu - This is absolutely wonderful, full of action and colors (if I tried to use that many colors it would look like an exploding rainbow).

Well here's mine at the 30 minute mark, right before all the fun stuff happens :p

EDIT: It's gone untill I can figure out how to keep it's original size when I upload it.
I HATE YOU PHOTOBUCKET!!! It's under 512 kb, to. If anyone knows how to fix the problem, because I get it ALL the time, or knows of a better free image hosting site, please tell me. Thank you.

04-06-2006, 01:32 PM
Here is an image created in Painter 9. It took 25 minutes (would have spent 30 had I realized I was looking at the limit for the wrong sketch :P ). (

It's supposed to represent two locomotive-like vehicles, racing on a sea of ice. What it actuaclly resembles though...

30 minutes for a sketch seems like plenty of time, until you actually try doing it.

04-06-2006, 03:03 PM
I always use to host my sketches. It hasn't given me any problems. I just use the direct link to the image. I don't know if its the best, but its good enough.
