Only 15 minutes for such a deep subject?

I think Roberto's in denial.:p

03-28-2006, 06:13 PM
ok, hereīs mine. Itīs supposed to be Herman Melvilles "Bartelby The Scrivener" with his formula of denial: "I prefer not to...".

Painter 15 min, +1 min. to make some more strokes to correct the arms... hope itīs ok... unfortunately didnīt save the previous version... used ref

Hehe... mine is awful! Well, 15 minutes isn't very much time. Its some little brat kid that spilled some mysterious blue stuff in the kitchen and lit something on fire. He's busy playing gameboy. I need to learn how to draw straight lines, it seems.

03-28-2006, 08:54 PM

omg, 15minutes is short. anyhow, I stopped drawing exactly at 15 minutes.

03-28-2006, 10:05 PM
first thing that popped into mind...:)
PS/wacom 11min

03-28-2006, 10:19 PM
Holy moly, mine is bad.

03-28-2006, 10:42 PM
15 minutes, PS, no ref

Could we raise the time limit a bit, Mr. Ortiz?:)

03-28-2006, 10:55 PM
15 minutes is a lil bit short...
15 mins pencil (+ 2 mins retouching/cropping in photoshop)

zyrinx: Nice background! how did you do that?
daw: lol? a bumblebee! though I don't see the relation with 'denial', it is a very nice picture for 15 minutes!
effstops: I like the idea and composition. Maybe you can spend a little more time on it!

03-29-2006, 12:22 AM
Ha - funny topic. I am thinking about doing a triathalon in May, and I think I am in denial about the shape I am in. - I love the freedom of the time restriction - it's just fun to try new styles and techniques - I know I am learning a tom this way

daw- your stuff always inspires!

03-29-2006, 12:48 AM
Daw: Awesome sketch! But I just noticed it had no wings. Intentional (and thus relating to denial) or are they, er, just too transparent to see? :)
twistercash: LOL!

I went to like... 17 minutes on mine, + a few to pick a font for the text, hope the overtime is negligible. :( Sorry.

03-29-2006, 01:53 AM
15 minutes...more or less

03-29-2006, 02:48 AM
3 mins.

03-29-2006, 03:17 AM
5 min

Gord - very impactful for such a quick sketch!!!

Thanks! Glad you like it.
Unfortunately, I didn't feel quite the same way about it, so decided to kill 15 more minutes and make version 2...
I like this one way more. Once again, a little bit over 15 minutes + text picking.

Sorry for recycling my old idea. -_-; My imagination abandoned me.

Edit: Daniel, your entry totally owned me. Just wow. In 3 minutes?! I couldn't draw that in 3 hours!! Great job, man. Great job.

03-29-2006, 04:48 AM
Robin - and long time no see! :)

03-29-2006, 04:57 AM
Gord - you are most welcome...as for long time, yep, I hardly ever have time these days, but I try to show up and make comments when I can. I think your work just keeps on getting stronger. Keep it up!

Helen - in this case, I think you are right. I like the second piece better. Something about the black and white and the placement works better. Most excellent!

danielh68 - Helen is right - that is a good one. It took me going back to look at it again, but the more I look at it, the stronger it is. Pretty amazing that you got so much emotion with so little actual detail.

hezz - that's a strong piece too, good work!

03-29-2006, 05:52 AM
So rushed. I went over by like a minute.

03-29-2006, 06:45 AM
robinayles: thanks!

mybutterflyiris: very nice, my favorite so far!

danielh68: 3 minutes! nice composition.

03-29-2006, 07:41 AM
so many great sketches in so little time - very good work:thumbsup::thumbsup:

thanks guys and let me explain...

back in the old day some guy... hmmm... I have to check on this!

WikipediA says:
"A long-held myth of the bumblebee was that, in terms of theoretical aerodynamics, it did not have the capacity (in terms of wing size or beat per second) to achieve flight with the degree of wing loading necessary. This myth became popular after an aerodynamicist in the 1930s stated that a bumblebee was not capable of flight. The statement was based upon an assumption that the bee's wing could be treated as a static aerofoil. However, in reality the bumblebee's flight is characterized by an oscillating wing that shares more characteristics with a helicopter rotor than an aeroplane wing."

Nice works everyone! 15 minutes it's quite a marathon ;)

I don't like the face, but, here it is, 15min...and wacom down :D

It's made in painter classic, I have quite a collection of scanned old looking papers on which I draw. Love that damn old look.

03-29-2006, 10:55 AM
mybutterflyiris- great one! Love the idea.

14 mins.

'It's OK, Mike, I'll phone Mom and she'll get us out of here.'

I know it sucks.

03-29-2006, 11:38 AM
haha paperclip. it doesnt suck at all. made me smile :D

03-29-2006, 11:43 AM

ps & wacom, 15minutes

paperclip: that's hilarious... and tenacious :)
mindofka: collection of scanned old looking papers is s good idea. good sketch but she doesn't quiet look like she's denying it...
mybutterflyiris: you hit it! that's great!
ComradeBitter: i like the second sketch better, especially the background is very nice.
Gord-MacDonald: sooo, is she denying that she's thin? i like that sketch, it makes me look at it for a long time.
danielh68: i envy you? no ref used?
KDW: it took me some time to figure out what it's supposed to be. i like your use of colors and the composition.
twistercash: very funny idea and well done!
Cyanid: is this a 'NO, go away' pose? you should maybe try not to draw so accurate when you know there's not much time. keep it loose and let it flow :)
Ben Johnson: I like it, especially those bottles. the hand'd need to be more accurate since it's the center of attention but in 15mins...
effstops: no, that's not bad. i think it's a little disturbing that that podest is so blurry, because it's nearer to the viewer than the man behind it. you maybe should have added some random details with a smaller brush just to accent it's depht in the image.
daw: thanks for the explanation :) good sketch.
hezz: i think your fills don't quiet go together with your line art. maybe try drawing cleaner lines?
GSmiley: i like the foreground, though i'd like to know what she's doing... :) i guess for the bg, you didn't have enough time...
Zyrinx: yep, beautifull bg. maybe try using bigger brushes to define shapes quicker. to add detail afterward you can use the eraser and or a smaller brush.
trialanderror: i like his face and the folders in the background. but i find it hard to critique on a painting where there's been use a ref...

i hope i could make some sense... :)

03-29-2006, 01:09 PM
Blimey! Trying to do a sketch in 15 mins is HARD!!! :argh:

Not happy with it, but there is no time to sort it!! Roberto is a stickler for the rules...

Well done to everyone that managed to do it and still make it look great! :applause:

03-29-2006, 01:30 PM
yeah, awful background, done in a hurry. photoshop

03-29-2006, 01:39 PM
Dimmur: that is just great! wonderfull!
cocoknight: thanks for the effort and for the words, I appreciate that, I am sure we all do!

03-29-2006, 01:52 PM
KDW: it took me some time to figure out what it's supposed to be. i like your use of colors and the composition.

Upsss... I did it again...I've made small chanage so hopefully pic should be more clear now.
Thanks for comment cKnight.

03-29-2006, 01:58 PM
hehe, funny: 'access denied' is the thought that popped up when i understood your image :)
now it should be very clear!

03-29-2006, 02:05 PM

I couldn't belive noone else had this idea... so i did it my self... was close, maybe even 16 minutes.

03-29-2006, 02:33 PM
Wow, some great stuff in this one. I really can't produce anything decent in this amount of time without reference, so mine is a bit crap :p

Photoshop, 12 mins.

03-29-2006, 05:16 PM

Forced myself to stop at 25:00 :(

03-30-2006, 06:03 AM
