View Full Version : CgTalk Daily Sketch 653 THE 20 MINUTE SKETCH: "Legends"
03 March 2006, 02:08 PM
* You have 20, (count them 20!) minutes to do your sketch.
IF you go beyond the assigned time limit , you have to post WHATEVER you have done after the time has expired, along with the FINAL drawing
Also, I will add a new voting category, called THE FASTEST DRAW
We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.
These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.
PS To submit your topic ideas and suggestions go to this thread:

KDW: Really nice work for 20 min... I love the mood in this!
So I'm really trying to loosen up... today I played with the artists' oil brushes some more in painter which seemed to help with loosening up a bit. I used a ref for the figure this time.
Daphne, the poor little nymph who got turned into a tree.
22 min in painter (darn it all)
03 March 2006, 12:40 AM

20 min. painter/photoshop.
Sorry.. lacking real hosting at the moment.
03 March 2006, 01:59 AM
Hey guys. Im such an erratic poster on here. But i was looking at the wonderful craig mullins' website recently and noticed he had 1200 pieces on his site. I mean JESUS! So i decided if i wanna get good i gotta start churning them out.
So on my lunch hour today i rushed out a quick version of Johnny depp from Pirates of the Caribbean, as 'cpt. jack sparrow.'. Im sure that fits under legend either for the character or depp himself?
From a still frame of the movie.
20 min . photoshop.
I never tried to work this fast before for this kind of image so i wasnt too disappointed.
PS. hooray for poppa burgundy :D
03 March 2006, 02:09 AM
20-23 min Photoshop
my first sketch
03 March 2006, 02:50 AM
The Legend of She Hound.... does not exist. But if it did, I would imagine she would look like this. Or maybe a dog torso with human hind-legs and a human head.
Oh, and I had a couple extra minutes so I drew what it would look like standing up. I realized the back legs would never touch the ground, so she would have to lean forward for ever just to keep balance. :/ Ref. for the head.
ProCreate Painter Classic + Wacom + 20 min.

03 March 2006, 03:24 AM
That is really a nice one CarlWahl! It is really amazing to get this unsual cg painting in 20 mins! How do you do that? Any tips for a newbie?
03 March 2006, 10:31 PM
Thanks for the positive feedback y'all!
chenga - thanks, I'm using painter 9, almost exclusively the Artist's Oils. They're very smeary and allows you to really push the paint around which I like since you get a lot of texture for free. In any case, I don't know if I'm the right person to give advice on painting since I consider myself a newbie also. I can however share a little recording I did of a similar sketch a couple of weeks ago. Don't know if it helps though...
