Latest Update: Final Image: Treasure Seekers
03-31-2006, 12:33 PM
Hi, this is my first time challenge, O boy, I'm soo late, had to finish up work, couldn't come up with a decent idea (due to the crazy talents of the other contestants),until now. This isn't quite a concept sketch, more like an idea...
well it's a composition actually, I decided to start with the composition (I always having trouble with comps), so I don't spend too much time designing costumes and characters.
Okay, the idea is some juvenile islanders decided to start a treasure hunt. A journey initiated by a bleek treasure map ~curiousity and an adventurer's heart is more likely...
I'll fill-in the background story when it's done, so wish me luck. Critics and suggestions are welcome!
wish you all luck too!

Hi, nice concept, can't wait to see the end results... the guy on the lower right has a strange mimic, though. Is he exciting or scared or weeping ?
The whole sketch is wonderful, Best luck Man !
04-13-2006, 02:06 AM
Good characters, it is similar on " Jungle book ". It would be desirable to look color
04-13-2006, 03:16 AM
excellent illustrations it will be fun to colour that, goodluck.
04-13-2006, 05:19 PM
I've made a grayscale shading, of the first character.
To lonewolf, the kid in the corner is looking optimistic, he's trying to look away in a distant trying to match the island formation with the map, but the gleaming sea under the dawn sky is pretty blinding, so he's trying really hard to see what's goin on, that's why he's sqiunting a bit, and frilled his eyebrow, but he still carries that optimistic spirit that's why he's smiling with his lips folded inward like he's having an enlighting plan in his mind. It is a tricky expression, I'll try to make the expression clearer in the coloring.
thanks for the tip
04-13-2006, 08:36 PM
That is a clever technique... I was sure it was 3D - but then I looked at some of your older posts and saw your WIP for another picture... cool!
04-13-2006, 08:42 PM
this is not 3d? wow, crazy technique and 100% 3d render style.
keep it up :)
04-14-2006, 06:55 AM
are you sure you joined 2D? the latest pic you posted looks 3D but if its 2D then you are an amazing artist. i am impressed. are you using photoshop, painter? thanks for your ideas about adding pony tail to the robot, i will consider that and do some testing and see if looks nicer. i will post it later. good luck to you again.

04-19-2006, 07:24 AM
I should have posted this one previously, good thing I have the backup. I use bevel and emboss as primitive shading.
04-19-2006, 07:34 AM
Ok I did the face detail (for now), so enough with this character, don't want to spend too much time dwelling on the same place

04-29-2006, 10:59 AM
Hi guys, thanks for the replies,
Hey dzygn, I'm not an interior designer or an architect, but if you think it's a good architecture, well thank you very much. I'm just an artist. Couldnt' quite understand about 'nasty decals effect paradise', maybe you mean the depth effects? Depth effects is a matter of contrasity, color selections, an maybe abit of blurriness. Those effects is a simple task for Photoshop, especially when you're working with layers. I lost count of how many layers I made, that's why I work in 'object oriented' manor, almost each object is a single file, another reason is for my computer to cope up with all those layers.
The small creature seems to be a good idea, hmm...
About the ethnic look, actually that was the plan from the beginning, but I figured I'm going to put ornaments, accessories, tattoos etc later when time seems to be more on my side, you see I have other work that's getting in the way of this journey heh heh heh.
Sorry no updates today. Actually, I did some progress, but I'm not at home right now so..
good luck to you all
04-29-2006, 11:04 AM

05-06-2006, 05:23 AM
This looks FANTASTIC!
One of the best uses of adjustment layers that I have ever seen.
Well it is never too late to learn some more.
You have managed to render the image amazingly. Looks better than some 3D renders!
I also loved the idea of your "depth" greyscale for the whole of the image.
Would you mind I try out your methods on a futur project?
I would really love to see how you finish the whole thing. IT isall looking very promising!
Best of luck... though it seems you don't need it much
05-07-2006, 02:14 AM
Damn it Sat, Speechless, can't say a word, Satya Rules Baby!!!

That's an amazing character design.
05-11-2006, 04:39 AM
Wow soo many replies! thanks guys, I'll try my best to finish this baby in time.
I see a non-believer? Thanks, that just means I did a good job. I assure you I'm not cheating, I'm not that stupid. I highly respect this forum and all the people in this society. My technique isn't exactly common, and it's not what you called 'efficient', but all is for the sake of being different, and for the sake estheticism..
Hooray to arts and artists!
05-11-2006, 05:02 AM
Okay it's the last human character, hopefully it'll be a smooth ride to the finish line, more like 'dead line' I guess
For those who doubt my honesty you can check out some more of my work at
It's an arcade cardgame, I was in charge in making and supervising the illustration of those cards. I worked on those cards with two other of my colleagues, so only some of it are mine. Hey one of my colleague is a member here, nicked name "Lonewolf".
How are you old man?
05-11-2006, 07:09 AM
That is by far the most unusual approach to shading I've seen in a long time! You also transport a lot of emotions in your characters. Together with this astonishing rendering technique this is likely to be a very nice entry to the contest. Keep up the good work!
05-11-2006, 07:59 AM
incredible coloring. THe boy is just....no words.
05-14-2006, 10:07 PM
Astounding! No other words. You're making a great illustration and you use an amazing technique! Great! Good luck!
05-17-2006, 04:17 AM
Hi pal, very nice touch... though I'm supposed to familiar with your techniques, but I'm still impressed.
I can assure you my fellow artists, that's a genuine original 2D art, using only Photoshop. He's a "specialist" with that new techniques, he's also my mentor and he surely develop so much.
Well, if you believe that Photoshop can make a painting resemblance, why is it so hard to believe that it also can create a 3D lookalikes ?
Way to go my friend, may the force be with you. Best luck to you all !!!
PS: I'm not that OLD!!
05-17-2006, 04:33 PM
Huff huff, okay, I've never put this much effort on a single picture before. But not trying my best is not an option, apparently I have to live up to my nickname.
Almost there, next is the water... Guess, I'll need more experiments with filters.
To "BlackDidThis", it's an honor if you try one of my technique, but actually you don't need my permission to do that.
Hey Lone Wolf, how's the office doin?
Thanks for your support maan, it's too bad you didn't join this challenge, well you're not THAT old but you're not gettin any younger heh heh?!
Thanks guys for the flattery. I really dont know how to react to that, but it sure does kept me goin. Thank you very much 'guys' ( did any girl replied?.. )but I'm still up for suggestions.
05-19-2006, 12:28 AM

05-19-2006, 06:11 AM
Whoah, what a nice idea for shading! it must have been quite tedious to do the embossing and beveling all over! But the result is well worth it! Thanks for showing us your technique! Good luck and all the best for your entry!
Your characters look great even on their own!
05-21-2006, 12:58 AM
Hey dzygn, why are you quitttin? That's too bad. Thanks for your suggestion, you're right the sky is too distracting, I'll fix it, I'll add some birds, and maybe that little creature you were talking about before, seems I can make it in time for that... hopefully. And don't get too excited for me, there are others with their own great work here, like jeromoo there...
Hi jeromoo, I've seen your work, it's kick ass. You're very talented.
Best of luck to all of the contestants, including me.

sorry I posted the final image in this post but it was a wrong one, I picked the wrong image.
05-23-2006, 11:11 AM
'Sotong' (the boy holding a map) is a whiz kid. He is the only one in the island with a golden pair of eyes. He claimed he could see things others could not see. He is a very smart boy, sometimes quite manipulative, but he's actually kind at heart. He represents 'Spirit' and 'Knowledge'.
'Jerung' (the boy next to the boat) is the chief's only son, he is the most popular boy in the island. He was born an athlete, a dare devil. He's practically good at almost anything. He is even faster and stronger than some of the adults. He represents 'Strength' and 'Courage'.
'Dugong' (the boy with the bananas) is the town's clown. He makes people laugh with his naive charm, especially his little crybaby sister 'Camar'. He looks a bit older than any other boy his age, kids frequently make fun of him, although he's bigger than the other, he never gets angry to those mean kids. One day he found a weird red banana that never goes spoiled, since that time any kids that tried to pull a prank on him, the prank ends up on themselves. He represents 'Endurance' and 'Luck'. Camar represents 'Hope' and 'Prayer' of love ones.
All three of them are best friends ever since they're small. They played together everyday. One day Dugong found a scroll in a cave behind a waterfall while they are playing at the waterfall. Sotong takes a look at it and decided it's a map to 'The Great Treasure'! Well, He's the only one who can read those funny letters. They made a pact to find this treasure as soon as they have the chance.
Yesterday was Jerung's 15th birthday. In this island fifteen is considered the age of maturity. Jerung passed the initiation trial, he manage to reach the sacred peak and take a dip in the 'Water from Nowhere'. His Father granted him a boat for his accomplishment. The boat is branded with the family crest. Jerung is now considered to be a real 'Man'.
They're good to go, there is no changing their mind, boys will be boys.Jerung snuck his boat out a distant from the village, so it'll be a silent preparation. They snuck out when everybody were sleeping.
By the break of dawn they embark on a journey seeking what in their mind is 'The Great Treasure'.
This picture obviously depict the departure of some boys looking for a 'Great Treasure', but what they had not realized yet is the biggest treasure of all is right under their noses. The treasure will be discovered when the journey comes to a full circle. When they're back home and realize what they're missing on the journey, and THAT is 'Homeland' and 'Family'. You can say that the journey itself IS the 'Treasure', because without the journey, they will not realize this at all and keep on taking for granted of every little things of their home. And when they learned to treasure their home and family, that is when they truly become 'Men'.
Just for fun:
Sotong means cuttlefish, Jerung means shark, Dugong is type of whale-like mammal, Camar means seagull.

excellent work. Impressive coloring on characters. My only crit would concern the bg. I'm not fond on purple night sky, rainbow... I fond it a little cliché. Anyway good luck for judging.
05-23-2006, 03:32 PM
There I must follow. The characters are impressing. The details are ...awsome. The composition succeeded to you also very much. Good luck!
05-23-2006, 03:57 PM
Great! Really a good illustration! Good job! Congrats and god luck!
05-25-2006, 12:33 PM
if i am not mistaken this is the only piece that actually shows you what happened after the journey. good concept !
good luck, cheers.
05-26-2006, 05:55 AM
I saw your post in ICG, which lead me here.. impressive shading of characters!! Good luck bro..
