View Full Version : The station

03-11-2006, 07:09 PM
Hi there!
I'm trying to finish the wip called crash on the seaport, but I would like to have your comments about a new project.
It's call the station, and it deals with closed stations in a foreign country...
My idea is to create a map of this country and to show you, day after day, the discover of the differents stations...
I"ll precise after some complements...
Hope you enjoy!

to continue....

03-11-2006, 07:47 PM
Wow! these are awesome works!! very detailed ideas, great colors and perspective, Nothing to crit keep it up!!

03-12-2006, 03:38 PM
Thanks a lot Brutal Monk, I answer to your WIPthread, so check it...
Here is another one. I tried to think about a machine with a big rock (up/down). It gives a force which allows cabines to move. Hope you understand me...

03-12-2006, 06:12 PM
And a sketch in b & w....

03-12-2006, 06:14 PM
When I saw the first picture I thought more in the lines of some sort of low-tech-future-fantasy flying airport for zeppelins or something : ]

03-13-2006, 11:27 AM
really like these. very atmospheric.

03-13-2006, 03:57 PM
nice to see ur new post again, I like it ,hope to see ur whole works!good luck, keep posting~ :bounce:

03-13-2006, 04:16 PM
Looks raw, and natural, I like it as well. Maybe more little objects would help define the scale and age of the station... just to give it the character you had in mind. :)

03-13-2006, 07:43 PM
Thanks a lot for your replies!!
It allows me to post some new things these next days in this thread...(actually I'm trying to finish my other wip:crash on the seaport, and it's difficult!) 323515
Here is just the map that I talk before in opening of this thread.
It's not a finished version, and some elements 'll be added (scale, temp, etc...)
On the orange line, are the stations...
Maybe that I'll represent differents views of the same station(a particular place, with details)...I don't know
If you want to submit new ideas of locations, you can!!
That's the wip!

03-14-2006, 08:09 PM
Here is a study of the environement's volume. Maybe i'll use these for base of paintings...I don't know, it was fun to do.
I used paper and scanner for base. Papers were scan directly on the glass, like an express sculpture, and speedly re organize in photoshop (negatif lighting and crop).

03-14-2006, 08:59 PM
Wow! Cool idea, to skenn paper for the mountains ~~ awesome result!

I love that b&w sketch, you have great fantasy!

Good luck!

03-14-2006, 10:11 PM
Thanks Brutal Monk...
I am trying to define most precisely the 2nd scene above...

03-15-2006, 12:08 AM
Just a detail (quickly made)which define the ambiance...

03-15-2006, 06:20 PM
Here is another step of the lanscape...

03-15-2006, 06:38 PM
I really like all of your detail and effort put into these, they look great. My only critique so far is that I think that on your most recent picture, the closest tower thing should be moved a little more towards the guy, right now it's kind of making an unnaturally straight line with the wires that are running.

03-15-2006, 11:13 PM
Thank you Aldog for your comment...
Maybe you are right about the tower thing and maybe I 'll change his place and persp.
I 'll look at this tomorrow, cause now it's late for me...
Have a nice night for those who are going to sleep...

03-16-2006, 07:51 PM
Here is the definitive step of the precedent scene.
On the map, it could be near the volcano...I'll see after.
Hope you like it!
C&C welcome.

03-17-2006, 11:59 AM
I wanted to work on another part of the island : the station in the forest...
Here is a color sketch of an interior.

03-17-2006, 12:25 PM
Beautiful lighting and Bold pencil marks - these are two of my favourite things.

The paper-mountains are beautiful.

03-17-2006, 02:51 PM
Thank you very much!
Here is the ext...quickly made..

03-18-2006, 04:41 PM
Here is another quick study for the north bay station...

03-18-2006, 07:48 PM
A productive day...I made this in the end of the day.

Here is the canyon when you leave the bay, before the forest trip...
C&c welcome...

03-18-2006, 09:01 PM
A comment from myself : I think the last one (canyon) is not enough nervous in his style..and there is a problem with the wagon at the top, but I have difficulties to resolve it...
So...I came back to work.
Bye and your comment could help me.

03-18-2006, 10:53 PM
The update...
more details, ..I think it's better.

03-19-2006, 03:00 PM
I don't know what is happening, I can't stop working...
So, here is sketch (for blocking greys)
Hope you like.

03-19-2006, 06:18 PM
Ok, ....it's time to think now and stop drawing!!
I'll come back...:scream:
Here is just a step of the previous sketch with a caracter in the foreground.
It was made for another view and quickly so it's a bit out of perspective.
It's an idea that maybe I 'll follow, cause in most of my work there 's no caracters.
Hope to have your comments!

03-19-2006, 06:39 PM
hi arnocob,

youre images are fantastic, youre style is unique and your talent is exceptional,

what else should I say:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: five stars from me

thanks so much for sharing

03-20-2006, 01:29 PM
Wow, i'm very impressed by your works. Absolutely great compositions and perspectives! And the idea with the scanned paper for the mountains is just supercool!! I'm really lookin' forward to an update here.

03-21-2006, 03:20 PM
Trialanderror, Derwolpertinger, thanks a lot for your kind words!
Trial, I am happy that my answer to your thread looks instructive...these are just comments(not The Truth), but I am sure that you took them like that. Thank you for your hapinness!
Derwolpertinger, your site is full of good stuff,...and your graphic section is the kind of style I like (a bit minimal and full of grace)

Thank you guys,
Now, I am working on caracters design for this thread and starting write few lines of story behind these drawings...cause I want the design to be more peculiar, and I am sure a kind of story could help me in this way...

03-21-2006, 03:40 PM

simply amazing. love your concepts. very inspiring. love your atmosphere.
good work man!

03-21-2006, 10:05 PM
Oh,...thanks a lot for the stars, I'll try to deserve your votes...in the future.
So, here is another one, ...until I traduce my debut of story.

I can say that the drones on the beach have been released by a flying machine, six months ago to prevent the zone around the lake ( they are recording vibrations on the floor)
I've got my embryon of story but I have to define some elements before submit it to you (and I have to traduce it in clean words!!)
So,...thanks a lot for your support.

03-21-2006, 11:47 PM
Lookin' pretty good, just one suggestion, i just tried to flip the image and i think it works a lot better. It's common that one reads images from left to right and when flipped the viewer is led into the image by the tree and the larger drone in the foreground, then follows along the receeding drones to finally reach the ship.
God, there are a lot of translation faults in there for sure.

03-22-2006, 01:59 AM
hi arnocob,

thank you very much again for your kind words. Im still very happy and just wondering about your great artwork. Every work of you has its own story. So full of mystery and drama. Timeless and exciting. Id loved to visit this places. Im a big fan of adventure games. I could imagine this images as backgrounds for this games...

Again... Excelent work

03-22-2006, 11:38 AM
I'm without words.

03-22-2006, 07:59 PM
You are very kind...it makes me very happy. Thanks a lot!
The story around these sketches is not for tonight, but....but, I made another view of the lake.

I have to explain a little bit:
We are in a nearest future, and the clean and natural water becames very rare.
Some private society are growing around this business.
The drones are recording vibrations on the floor so you can't walk on the beach...
The tube that you can see come from a factory.
The factory was create six months ago, and his function is to bring the clean water of the lake to the nearest city, far from the island.
Everything is automatic, there are no people, exept our protagonist..
to continue...

03-23-2006, 06:04 PM
Just another view of the lake's beach with the drones...
I 've tried to compose an image with drama...
It's not perfect, but the idea was to work quickly.
Hope you like,...

03-23-2006, 06:10 PM
Wow very cool sketch, i like the composition a lot.

03-24-2006, 12:41 AM
Another me...
A quick study for a station at the summit...
I enjoy to work quickly,
I think i'll re-work on it (tomorrow?)
Have a nice night if it's time like me to go to bed.

03-25-2006, 07:33 PM
I am working on this (step one, not finished and I encount some difficulty to manage it)
A night view of the shipwreck on the lake. This is the house of our hero...
I'll bring some details in the interior (and some light maybe through a second hole off canvas)
and precise the exterior (lake reflection etc...)
The color balance'll change a bit, maybe...
If you have some critics, ...fire!

03-25-2006, 08:49 PM
Hi arnocob,

wonderful image again, the water is awesome... As I like blue, orange combinations I would give a try to a second lightsource as you suggested but I like the image as it is too...

thanks also for commenting on my image... it helps a lot...

keep posting pls, its just wonderful to see your new creations...:)

03-25-2006, 10:23 PM
Thanks Trialanderror, and you are right about orange/blue...that's the way I chose.
So, the second step...

03-26-2006, 10:22 PM
Here is the final step...
C&c welcome...
I like it, but I don't know why (where in the image) there is something that don't satisfy me..

03-28-2006, 11:21 PM
I have just finished this one.
The tube comes from the lake and cross the forest...
Hope you like it.

03-28-2006, 11:40 PM
fantastic dude!
love the feel of the island that is coming out with the drones things and stuff.
starting to have a real atmosphere.
only crit is the straight line you drew on the map. not realistc and then you drew the cables going up the mountain as zig zagging accross the landscape :)
but fantastic sketches! very inspiring

03-29-2006, 02:15 AM
Thanks a lot Cavematty, I agree about the map.
It was a start before a final version, I'll add some changes on it...
A quick study...
bye bye

03-29-2006, 04:55 PM
Here is a variation around the forest's drone tracking...
It's the first step (blocking colors, compo etc...)
It will be nice to have some comments before that I come back to work on it...
Maybe the hero could be bigger in the image? I don't know

03-29-2006, 06:08 PM
Hi arnocob,

wonderful images again, really impressing lighting, looks so realistic. You must have a big imagnination...

Regarding your character I think its not easy for me to answer as I compare the character in this picture with the character in your other pictures. In your previous pictures the character seems to be bigger in comparison to the tube. But Im not sure about it. Hope I explained it well.

03-29-2006, 09:31 PM
Thanks Trialanderror, finally I have changed a lot of things, and I like it like that..
Here is not the finished step but I wanted to show it to you. The drones are not shown on this step but they 'll appears on the final. Some parts are not finished but for me it's almost the end. I prefer this one than the precedent, cause I think it's more cinematographic?
If you have some crits...

03-29-2006, 09:56 PM
you know I like all of your images and this one too. just amazing and exciting atmosphere. maybe you should wait for a more objective person LOL

03-30-2006, 11:22 PM
I wanted to do another view of the tracking scenes...
The precedent image will be changed a bit, and this one too (face and background forest...)
I am working on that, if you have some comments, it 'll help me.

03-31-2006, 02:31 AM
Impressive lighting and quick concept feeling,I like it ,love it a lot ,hope to see your whole details pic to show me,hehe ,good luck everyday~

03-31-2006, 05:07 PM
Thanks Ruihong Tang,
I think it's better this way, more dynamic...
and what about the contrasts?are they to hard?
I have some problems with my screen (to old!), at the end of the journey, it becomes darker.
So maybe for you the contrast on my images are very different from mine...
Bye bye

03-31-2006, 05:19 PM
You are coming along nice! I just love the sketch with the guy in front of the pipeline! The composition is, as always, great. The durched angle is also a very nice touch. Refering to the contrast, i think it's good as it is, and i know your problem, just threw away my 5 year old crt and got a new one, it's really a biiig difference.

04-01-2006, 02:10 PM
Thanks a lot Derwolpertinger (I came back to your site, and the illustration section is really good!)
Here is a kind of storyboard of a part of the tracking...
I made it cause I wanted to think in terms of sequency.
The action takes place in a kind of old garage, (for cabines)
I am working on the sketch number 05, and I will post a view of it

04-01-2006, 04:25 PM
wow, this is so nice.
it seems to flow so easily of your hands.
you pull out one after the other.
i really enjoy your hard brush style.

04-01-2006, 06:53 PM
Thank you Proconpictures,...and no, it's not flow so easily from my hands:)
I spend a lot of time on this cause I have time! (currently no job)
so I can put online a drawing per day,...but it gonna changes!
Here is the first step, if you see something that hurts you, tell me please..

04-01-2006, 07:11 PM
maybe the softish (part of the right leg) too long?

04-01-2006, 09:11 PM
Here the second step,...I am working on the lighting
There are two light source : the background windows (with the drone in black), and another one on the right(off canvas)for the caracter...
To continue...Your comment is welcome!

04-02-2006, 11:18 AM
I came back to work one hour ago, and here is the third step..
I am not sure about the colour balance,...
I think the most important lighting 'll be the one on the right(off canvas), in the final...

04-02-2006, 01:34 PM
The smooth mood of the b&w step has disappeared now, and i don't know if it's good.
I am just thinking and playing...
I have changed the position of the guy,...and work around lighting(in a rough style, but it's not finished!)
But maybe it's enough for today...
I'll try to keep this speed touch of lights with some details (on the guy etc, cause this part is too soft detailled, it needs precision)
bye bye
Crits welcome!!

04-03-2006, 10:03 PM
Here is the final step...
Crits welcome...
edit:helmet too big, i think.

04-04-2006, 09:48 PM
On this study, I have tried to play with colors...
The tube (clean water) has been constructed near the old line...
And the hero is in the old wagon, he tries to join the beach and escape from the drones.
Hope you enjoy!

04-05-2006, 09:23 AM

I like light tones. and atmosphere. great job

04-05-2006, 11:41 AM
Wow, great work here. Some very nice pictures

i love this one:

Post more :D

04-05-2006, 04:56 PM
This was the first time I saw this thread..
and it's not often someone goes through all 5 pages, right? :D
I enjoyed doing it btw!

You're a skilled artist! Love those images you made.
Hope we'll see some more of these!
Realy impressed me..

04-05-2006, 05:55 PM
:)Natchoyague, BlinCk, MichaelMotion...thanks a lot!
You are very kind.
For information, I think i am about to close this thread, maybe in a small week or something...
cause I am about to begin a job, speed and huge in terms of intensity.
I could do the both, but it's also for me the occasion to change my subject, maybe another wip, after?
So, in these days, I'll try to close this by resume or think about a finish...
If you have suggestions...
But, here is another one study!(3 hours).

04-06-2006, 02:09 PM
Finally, he has joined the beach...

04-07-2006, 03:11 PM
This is almost the end...
He took refuge in an old observatory; and he is preparing his travel (project:leave the island)

There'll be one other or two max drawings...

04-07-2006, 09:31 PM
It's almost the end, but...
I made this one (one hour), to explain the pasts evenements.
Six months ago, residents of the island were pushed out by the drones.
As usual for this kind of operation, no soldiers were present, only robots.
The mobile was to exploit the clean water without problems, and without spys...
Just one person stayed on the island, and you already know him...
Bye bye

04-10-2006, 03:03 PM
Believe me when I say "it's almost finished"...it's true.
There 'll a final shot,
but here is another view of the precedent scene (the exode of the island)
A bit raw, and in a diff mood than the precedent, but I've tried to render a past event.
Crits welcome..

06-14-2006, 11:22 AM
Just a new one station...
It's not finished, ..I'll bring some details (caracter, wood..)http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f335/arnocob/station-wood.jpg

06-17-2006, 12:20 AM
Awesome sketches! Very cool stuff.

07-06-2006, 05:42 PM
Just the first step of a drawing...
I am thinking of the background now...
Maybe some cables of the telepheric line. If you have some ideas...

07-06-2006, 06:36 PM
Wow, this is a hugely inspiring thread! Your knowledge of llight and colour is just amazing! how long do each one of these concept sketches take you, if you don't mind me asking? My favourite is the one of the observatory on the beach, the light and colour in that are just spot on for that crisp light you get round the coast on a clear day. Wonderful work!

07-07-2006, 11:11 AM
Thanks a lot Zephyri!!
About time on each sketch : approch.4-5 hours.
I spend one hour on the pencil draw (choice of comp and subject), and the rest on the color.
Some pencil drawing are much define than others.

maybe an update for tonight...

07-07-2006, 02:38 PM
I'm playing...
This envirronment(cavern) brings a kind of drama and adventure feeling...
I am not sure about this choice, but I think that put a character in the image is not bad..

07-07-2006, 05:25 PM
+ some elements on the roof.
A kind of classic aventure mood (Verne etc..), no?

07-07-2006, 08:08 PM
I've re-mixed the last sketch, because I wanted to evoque a more strange envirronment..
It's was also the first sketch with a tablet (a friend give me one for present, cause I help her to do a job)
I don't know if I want to work with a tablet but it was fun to do (I think i will reserve it for the color)
If you could give me your comment, because I want to finish it to submit in the 2D gallery..

07-10-2006, 05:11 AM
Still playing with the tablet, and try some colors...
I don't really know where i'm going but i like the rocs/mountains styles and colors...
I think the blue green values brings a nice atmosphere (less dramatic, more "zen":)) No?
Maybe I"'ll add some small pink reflections on the rocs.

07-17-2006, 05:27 PM
Realy nice work. I enjoyed your lose style, with the pencil drawings and PS paintjobs. I like the style since you get to see the thought process going on through the pencil work. Two of my favorite pieces were the Old Observatory and your last post, The Station. The Old Observatory has this calm mood right by the water with the bright, clear blue sky that leaves me wonder "What happened here?" I like the blue color scheme of The Station. I get a nice feeling of isolation with it being tucked away in the mountains by the water. I do like the idea you had of putting a character in the scene. It helps establish a sense of scale as well as discovery of the location. I would also keep some of the hanging vines in the foreground that you had in your initial sketch. I think you could clean up and refine some portions of your painting to bring back some of the details that you had in your drawing (example: the wheel that is attached to the roof of the building).

Hope you find my comments and crits helpful. Great job and keep up the good work.

07-18-2006, 07:05 AM
Did you make the prev sketches without a tablet?!

O_O oh -literaly- MY GOD !

Absolutely incredible.

Looking forward for updates.

07-18-2006, 11:47 AM
Hey arnocob, coming along nice! I really like the last one you posted, very cool colour scheme and composition!

07-18-2006, 12:07 PM
Thanxx a lot!
Aphextweak : Thanks for your long comment. I also like when we could see the thought process in the other's work..
About the last one, It's not finished...and I agree about your points. Your comment helps me to re-work on it, cause for an unknown reason I was a bit sick about this painting...
But maybe, it's a good thing to finish it, and the result could be interesting.
I am still loking for some new technical method , cause work with a tablet is new for me..
Finish this painting could be a good try.
It will be cool to see what is your work,..and there 's no image in your portfolio... :)

Serena : Thanxx for your mail..
About the tablet's drawing : The color process of the last one was made with a tablet (but the pencil base was made with a real pencil (step 01)
I draw also the black and white one with the guy walking with the tablet (post 78)..
Thaaaanks again for your enthousiasm!

Derwolpertinger : I've just seen your reply..Thanks too!
I was just about to reply to your last post in the finished section,..it's been a long time since without a work of you!!

Note : These days I'll move the computer to another place for this month, so it will take some days for an update..

07-18-2006, 04:24 PM
Glad you found the comments useful. I understand about the tablet being difficult... I have a hard time with it too sometimes... You basically have to retrain your hand eye cordination... from looking down at what your hand is drawing to looking at the computer screen to see where you hand is moving the curser.

I've just started posting here, but there should be a few images in my portfolio at the moment. I started a thread that has one of the images posted here. (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=380933) I primarily do 3d work, but I love drawing, painting and concept work.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you finish The Station.

11-03-2006, 01:48 PM
I am trying to finish this one...
I encounter some difficulties with the lighting.
I think something is missing (some pink reflections?)
It's maybe a bit dark..
Finally, there is no character and stuff on the roof, but I 'll put more mountain's vegetation.
comments welcome.

11-03-2006, 02:29 PM
I realy like the concept of this one! However im not sure if the last update is better, because - however i do like the contrast - i'm starting to get realy cold looking at this picture :scream::D . Keep it up and i will keep an eye on this thread

11-03-2006, 06:26 PM
Uhm. If you want to describe a pink light the you should sobstitute white areas with pink ones on the house's roof

06-22-2007, 03:59 AM
Well, I came back on this thread, just trying to finish this one, month after month... (this is the third time:) )
This painting doesn't want to be finished I guess!
Anyway, I try again...
Here is what I have today, it's a bit cold and darken (blue touch)but I am trying to render a morning light in moutain...
I'll probably change (or remove )the tree and other things but I can't see which element at the moment..
I'll adjust the contrast later..

06-22-2007, 05:59 PM
wow ... another great thread.... so nice sketches...Mr.Arnocob...and I'll learning more..thank you...thank you very much..keep it up.....:bounce: :bounce:

06-25-2007, 12:35 PM
I dont comment so often i get kind of nervous, bu i really like your stuff!
The strokes in this last one is great but one thing i noticed is that maybe the house feels a bit flat maybe its because the dark thick edge in the countur of the house.

Anyway hope this is helpfull.
Hope you understand my english!
