I tried to reproduce some weeks ago that rig you're talking about. It's for MAX 8, and although it's quite "cheap-rigged", it works OK for animations.

You can download this rig from here ( and you can see an example of the rig in animation here ( (you'll need Quicktime 7 to see it).

I used a stretchy bone and some skinning, and LinkedXForm (I know, I know... it's so cheap! ;)). Hope you like it, dude!

I used The Setup Machine 2 (available from Anzovin Studios) and it worked like a charm. I just used the spine widget and ran the plug-in. I was able to create a ball with a tail and a ball with two legs (along the lines of the Animation Mentor models). With TSM2, it's very little work.

Instead of a very complex rig, I think you should use a FFD space wrap to set up the squash, stretch and expression. After you made the different expressions from the FFD space wrap, you can then applied a Morph modifier to the FFD space wrap. Then link the space wrap and align it to the ball. That way you can simply animate the ball moving and rotating and have the FFD on top. It's a pretty good set up and you can animate the morph modifier for the squash and stretch and not having to worry it the ball is facing the correct way. Let me know what you think!
