Microsoft today switched on their 'Windows Live Search'
From The Register (
Microsoft has been typically bullish on the potential for Windows Live Search and its ability to come from behind and crush the current market leader, Google. Neil Holloway, president of Microsoft Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) last week proclaimed that in six months' time, the company "will be more relevant in the US market place than Google.

So how does it stack up? It depends on who you ask. At this point, it's basically MSN Search with a new look. So the search engine lacks any noticeable improvements over Google—which Microsoft says are coming— but the entire thing is wrapped in a user interface that gave me the heebie-jeebies. And that's putting it mildly.

I tried to search for "meaning of life expressed phonetically" but it seemed to jam :hmm:

I imagine Microsoft must have paid a lot of money to acquire the "" website, but they would have needed a memorable name.

Also, I wonder if the Internet Explorer web browser will eventually include a link or a search entry box that links to Live Search.

A "Google killer"? Maybe.

When I tried to use scroll wheel... oh the madness :surprised

You may want to start from for less clustering.

funny how microsoft seems to instist that none of it's services work as they should on any other browser then explorer.

not sure i like it either, when I search I like clean to the point searching.
hell, with the googlesearch built into opera i don't even NEED to go to searchpage first to start searching ..

oh well, I guess some people will like this.

First impressions

-Doesn't work with Opera

-I liked the single page approach and keyboard navigation
-The way it shows the images is cool
-Works with Firefox

i've been using google's version of this for about a month now. whilst not perfect it is functional.

the thing that live suffers from is the news, its single sourced (unlike google's which is automagiacally aggregated)

it is much slower (initial load time) than google's (but that could be bacuse its a beta, and its being paisted. although the new hotmail beta is even slower, and that is becuase the page size is HUGE)

so to conclude:

slow(that could be a bug...)
single sourced news

better array of "plugins"
integration with flickr
has a funky clock feature
but its each to their own, i'll stick with google for the minute.

Such a shame, my opinion of MS has been rising the last few months, I thought that they had finally at least begun to admit that we have choices in what software we use, and now this. Try to use the page in Opera and it loads...and loads...and loads..., but never gets finished loading; in IE the page loads in 10 seconds. This is the stuff that justifies the MS haters. I only hope that this is just the current state of it, after all, it is Beta.

Here's to hoping MS plays nice and takes care of the non IE users.
