Hello everyone,

What do u think?

12 December 2002, 07:44 PM
It looks awsome. Great work

12 December 2002, 07:49 PM
i love this empty atmosphere and the feeling.
Amazing work.

Just a litte question:
how long did it take to model the city background
and how many polys has it?

thanks in advance.

12 December 2002, 08:00 PM
Post apocalyptic feeling!!

12 December 2002, 08:07 PM
I love it, the second one rocks, I love the amount of detail you put into it, and the fact that the whole scene was used by making mostly primitives is even more awsome. BTW what did you use shag for?

12 December 2002, 08:29 PM

12 December 2002, 09:25 PM
NICE textures...

you used shag for the grass (vegitation) right?

12 December 2002, 09:57 PM
great image man!!

if i had to critique ANYTHING, it would be the lighting..with a hazy atmosphere like that, i would think that you would have a little less contrast. more overall lighting i think

:buttrock: :buttrock:

12 December 2002, 10:04 PM
Wow, very impressive.

I kinda like the one without the city better, because it seems to fit into that lonly environment better.

Very, very good work.

12 December 2002, 10:10 PM
10x guys!

JuRrAsStOiL, the city buildings i took from several projects
i did in the past, but when i created them it took me quite
a while to do...
the whole scene has 2349920 :) i know...
the building alone has 213003.

SubDimension "Post apocalyptic feeling" - that's the look i
tried to achieve.

That's right McSpirit, i used Shag:hair for the grass.

12 December 2002, 11:55 PM
great job Meny

12 December 2002, 12:05 AM
So detailed!

12 December 2002, 12:08 AM
I prefer the city version, great job

12 December 2002, 12:31 AM
I don't want to insult your beautiful work, but why did you choose to go with real buildings in the background? At the distance they are at, would you tell the difference between 2d and 3d? I am just curious, great pics.

12 December 2002, 12:42 AM
great sense of atmosphere and mood.

12 December 2002, 12:52 AM
its great indeed, i only would notice some how the distance feel is little bit lacking. You know how in the distance objects blend to the atmosphere. Well i think the buildgings should be just silhuets, and maybe a little bit more of them. Other then that you got a great apocaliptic feel.
Good job.

12 December 2002, 04:35 AM
its really really good. I think you can make it even better by doing some things...

the buildings in the background are cool and I think it would be better if you added more variety to them, like a lot of them have a similar broken corner, and are the same size. Also the horizon line in the city one might be too low? im not sure but it looks like it goes right from the road to a city backdrop, liek theres nothing inbetween. The plains one looks more convincing.

also, the clusters of grass seem to be in regular intervals along the left side of the road. maybe make them a bit more random i guess.

other than that awesome job!

12 December 2002, 04:42 AM
only crit I have is that the road ends prematurely and doesn't continue into the distance... Maybe just a bit of photoshoping could fix this... or a rerender with more road... just seems abrupt...

Other than that, great work setting a mood :)

12 December 2002, 05:35 AM
i prefer the city version myself, but as someone said already before, i think the picture is a bit too high on contrast. every single edge or corner seems to be complete black.. thus giving the image quite a 3D feel to me.

12 December 2002, 06:13 AM
where's the award?

12 December 2002, 06:57 AM
Great job
this is perfact work,i think

but if you make further a little dirty,it will be better.
for example: wastepaper, bug,or garbage foreground.

12 December 2002, 09:10 AM
Thanks again everyone!!

Hec, the main reason i did 3d buildngs instead of 2d pic
composed in photoshop or even as a plane in the scene itself,
becasue i planing to animate the scene one day. that doesn't
mean i'm going to get very close to the buildings but still i think it
would be better to model them and get better results.

Dmitry, one of the tests i did was like you described but i
prefered this version... maybe i'll upload that test.

Antilles, i guess you're right about the similarity of the buildings.
also with the comment about the horizone line. i had problem
with that and i had to fake it a little bit. i should extend the
distance of the road much much longer and it will probably
integrated better (KRENO also mentioned that). and about the
grass... i guess you are right about it too :/

Stimpy, i intend to exaggerate with the contrast in my pics,
i know, i like it like that... :)

_d1, do u really think??? i hope........

xinraylife, i don't want to add more details to the scene...
i think it would be too loaded. there are already lots of small
details and i think that the foreground which is more sparse,
(comparing to the other planes in the scene) gives good balance
to the entire scene. i even tought i should clean a bit more he
road from the grass for this reason.

10x again everyone!

12 December 2002, 09:30 AM
Meny, I love your work, I love your lighting and texture work. Well done, Man, Keep post more/

12 December 2002, 09:46 AM
great picture Meny

nice color and composition !!!

12 December 2002, 11:34 AM
Great mood, great ambient, great light/shadow balance (lol more shadow than light)

I'd go for the city one too ... kinda feels too much empty without it ... as if something's missin ...

Anyways, when i look at it i get that Holllywood movie feelin ... awesome job! CONGRATS!

12 December 2002, 11:36 AM
Great work :applause:
i like the 2nd one .
it has a meaning to me .
Great work.

12 December 2002, 03:49 PM
Its freaken sweet, you have to make a movie with two cars racing there!

12 December 2002, 09:59 PM
Please: No racing scene in this one!!!
It's just to solemn to destroy this darnn good picture!

Man! This is the most impressive work since some time! I'm always trying to create atmosphere in my pictures. If you have some time, I'd be really greatful if you would write a few words to my try... (

Thank you. And keep it up. It's really stunnig.

12 December 2002, 07:27 AM
Thanks again guys!!!

12 December 2002, 08:36 AM
Very nice,I like the light and shadow balance within the scene, nice contrast. Good looking scene,

12 December 2002, 10:47 AM
:) good work. how did you made the sky... I see a "plane or sphere" you aplie the bitmap to the plane?.. plug-in?

12 December 2002, 12:12 PM
Well Done !!
Nice Jobe boy .

12 December 2002, 12:32 PM
I'd like to be the first to mention that I don't think the horizon line poses a problem.
I saw this on the Tapuz forums too and people there also mentioned the same thing. Well, I disagree.

Personally, I hate those overly-flat obviously-3d terrains. Land (even when it's flat) is a little roliing. Especially when viewed from such a shallow angle.
Only think I'd suggest is to highten the whole city and horizon and drown the bottom of it in ground fog. That way you don't even have to bother with continuing the road.

my $0.02

12 December 2002, 02:27 PM
great stuff here. I like the one with the city, and the one with no city. I was a bit surprized to see that the city is a 3D element, quite impressive.

Very good work with the texturing. The only thing that I would do if you want to add a little bit more detail to it would be to bevel some of the edges here and there, or maby add a broken down car as an extra embelishment. Otherwise, I would call it finished.

12 December 2002, 08:01 AM
XerC, WOW! i just saw the thread you linked. what can
i say... looks amazing, everything... the render, textures.
i love the atmosphere. maybe you should do another version
for this scene, a day light version

dsigna, thanks! the sky is just a bitmap on a plane. no plugin.

thanks SHERBAN! for your support :) thanks for the advise!
i'll try that.

stephen2002, thank you! i also tought about adding a broken
car on the side of the road... i'll try that too...

12 December 2002, 09:32 AM
does Hec mean that Meny should use real photo, not 3d models?
I think Meny made it right, 3d models, ahh, more work, but more honorable, if it would be just photograph, hmm, not so honorable.
This is the image style i like, when i look it, i know how hard u had to work for it.

i just wonder how good are your machines u working on :D
puuh...lag for me :D

12 December 2002, 09:57 AM
Liking your environment conduct , even more works is catch sight of in the wish very much .:applause:

12 December 2002, 04:21 PM
Thanks a lot, Meny!
This really means something to me :D
Before I think about a Daylight Scene I should first remove the few errors, that are still in the picture (though it's the third version ;) )
Maybe later, at the moment I'm really short of time :hmm: (Christmas :annoyed: )

12 December 2002, 04:58 PM
äkselent...extraordinary mood and this nice hollow feeling....marvellous:thumbsup:

12 December 2002, 05:51 PM
As many have noted, this is way cool, it tells a story to me, in either picture, either being (without city) a very distant place that has been abandoned.

Then the one with the city,, well this is even more dramatic to me, it like this gas station tells us a story about the city, like the city just might be abandoned also. Kind of apocalyptic to me.

And wow I really need to try doing something like this,, I wonder what your textures look like? And how you went about making them.

I want to make something like this, looks like fun.

12 December 2002, 08:40 PM
Hi pal,
well i couldn't avoid reply this thread 'cause you have obtained one of the most difficult things to achieve in Max: atmosphere and realism. I think there are no a lot of works in MAX that obtain that.

Really impressive buddy. Keep it up!!!

:wip: :wip: :wip:

12 December 2002, 10:27 PM
nice work but i think the biggest mestake U done is the city on the horizont with 3D... what for creting horizonts with 3D , U could paint this and put as the texture ... think about people who dont understand 3D and they are not impresive with nubers of pollys but the effect ... U could save so much work ...
Think also about rendering sequence from it...
I think that the idea of working of smoethink dont base on the tools and solutions but the final effect U need..
Look at the matepaintings for movies...
Even if U want to get closer to the city U can cheat this with lot's of easy tricks and after all every one will remember :

" SubDimension "Post apocalyptic feeling" - that's the look i
tried to achieve. "

not :

"the whole scene has 2349920 i know...
the building alone has 213003.

All I want to say is that I dont understan reason of doing so much work that could be spend on somethink else...

But the effect is IMPRESSIVE....

12 December 2002, 11:11 PM
Only crits: Needs more AA and the electric pilons don't stretch out very far...

Carl

12 December 2002, 11:17 PM
the power could have gone underground through conduit.

The span distance between pole to pole looks ok,, but the typical distance between them usually vary between 150 to 200 feet.

I'm a Civil CAD Drafter,

so thats my opinion on that matter. they look about right to me.

I see some of the pixel steping on the Gass Pump rof covered area, where it meets the sky.

other than that it looks great to me.

12 December 2002, 03:14 PM
Sceme, Thank you! my machine is not so powerful :)
P-III, 933 MHz, 512 ram but i manage with it somehow...

EighthDecay, Thank you! i'm glad i succeeded to pass
what i had in my mind :) i created all the textures in
Photoshop. here are some of the textures i created for
this scene:

you can also enter this link and see some, unrealated textures
of buildings i did in the past (created "pixel by pixel", without

Argail, thanks! all i can say is that i understand what you're
claiming but still, it's not all about simplifing for me. i know
that there are much easier and "correct" way to do it, but
even if i didn't have to build the city, i chose to do it for the
challenge of it and for the fun. in some projects you must think
Sufficient and not overreact with polygons for example. but this is
private project which i don't have any limitiation and i'm doing it
for fun without thinking too much technical but creativity... but
again i understand what you are saying and i agree with you :)

EighthDecay, in my next project i'll put the electirc wires
underground :)

Here's the making of movie of this scene. it's quite heavy,
especially for only static images that crossfades, but here it is
(you need to disable getright, dap, godzlilla etc before d/l)

Thank you!

12 December 2002, 05:19 PM
Hi Meny.

I'm a fan of your work, and this time you have outdone yourself :D
The composition and ambience of the image ( I prefer the second one without buildings) is incredible. I love the subtle color changes and contrast. Good work!!

The only thing I see is that you abused a little with the sharpening. There is some aliasing there because of that. Perhaps you could use an unsharp mask instead?

Anyway, great work. Keep producing! :scream:

12 December 2002, 06:06 PM
Really thought your truck scene was really cool, made it my desk top image for a few days. =D

Great little making video, that was fun to watch. Thanks

The electric wires can be Aerial spans, thats fine, but sometimes they go down riser conduit down the pole and across the streets into vaults/manholes and then back onto another Aerial Run, Mostly the Electrical cables would be in Metal conduit pipe thats around 2 to 4 inches in Diameter.

I like the poles in the scene, adds dimension.

Just some ideas,

I have a street intersection I made for work, it has may of these details in it, but my texture making skills suck hard. Well if I could figure out how to map stuff,, :hmm:
well not like you do,, only simple ways. very cool textures

01 January 2003, 08:53 PM
Great atmosphere, great modelling, great textures.. Great pic. Hi-res version would be nice. I would like to put this to my wall :)

01 January 2003, 09:48 PM
This is wicked. Post-apocalyptic images just do something special to me. You should model the Last of the V8 Interceptors and get some old-school Mad Max action!! heh ;)

01 January 2003, 09:46 AM
slime! Thank you so much for the complimets! i'm sorry for the late
response... i didn't see your message till now...

EighthDecay! Thank you! again, sorry for the late response...
It's a honour for me that you put the truck image in the
desktop :) if i could help you in any way with textures, just let me

Coroner! Thank you!!! great idea, i'll render Hi-res version...

Greenlief! Thank you!
I'm working on a new image with the same style these days...
I'll post it as soon as i finish it...
What is a V8 Interceptors ? i missed you there...
