Latest Update: Coloring WIP: CLOSEUP!
Ive been waiting for a moment to really bust my arse on these challenges and make something truelly inspiring and at the same time unique and different. I will be entering both the 2D and 3D challenges in hopes of finishing one or both based on where my inspiration moves more towards. Through the next couple months I hope to have a great time joining all of you in this great challenge ahead of us. I will post as much as I can throughout and help where needed.
Well im officially in for just the 2D challenge. My idea will consist of a vast asian influenced landdscape looking down from a side of a cliff where 3 characters are dangling, moving forward to their journey. They will be cartoony characters of animals with human characteristics. I will begin here shortly with my concept sketch and move on from there. Sorry it took me so long to start this thing as Ive had a really busy last couple months at work. More to come!
This is the start of it, I have time only for 2D this time. Im going a realistic cartoony banking mostly on lighting and perspective. Hope you like the process I go through. The next couple weeks should be fun!
Here is the lineart, since this time I didnt draw it freehand with my normal trusty pencil and vellum paper, pretty much this step could have been skipped all together, so basically the lineart is just boxed lines showing composition, angles, perspective, and some light, and atmosphere. I actually spent most of this morning working on the coloring wip which you will see in a second!
I spent about 7 hours altogether, some last night, some this morning blocking in color to get to what you see! Pretty much I masked out the foreground in one layer, background in another, characters in another, thats why you dont see them, and mid ground also in another layer. From there its just a matter of picking your colors you want your image to have. I do the different layers for one to get rid of things, but for 2, to always change color and contrast to make things fit better and give out more feeling of depth color and light. I block in heavy color early, do my darks and lights, and begin slight hints of detail from there. I use perspective lines throughout the composition to help me as well as I work them into the piece for detail also which works rather well with rock formations. That is about it. My next wip if I have time later tonight or tomarrow will have more emphasis on detail. I havent decided where I might go yet. Maybe the Clouds? Characters I will start on later as I want the background to be awesome first before I start on them Enjoy!
Worked on some details, reworked some of the background. Drop it as it looks better perspective wise. Began on the clouds. Pretty easy setup if anyones interested, I pretty much drew one big cloud how I wanted it, brought up the contrast, and cut and pasted it in different parts of the scene. Blended afterwards. Began on my dwarfs, there is 2 but I may add 1 more!? Thats pretty much it, just lots of coloring before I begin tightening everything up so it all looks like its from the same scene. More to come
Heres the latest, im wanting to get these dwarfs done and then jump back into background details, etc. More to come!
Heres a bigger update! Had sometime to work on it more tonight. I know its coming down to crunch time, hope to finish. Well, seeing how im the only one writing in this thread, I guess I need to start showing more progress shots.
Added wind blower in clouds, started working on 2nd dwarf, worked on landscape and grass, hrmmm.. and whatever else small additions you can see. Still going with detail and changing color scheme ever so slightly on this, and more so towards the end. We will see! More to come!
Latest in a series of color wips. This is Number 5. Im just keeping on pace to try to finish before deadline. Im going to try to get it as tight as possible before the finish. Ill be working on the Dwarfs here more and then concentrate more on the foreground and back ground mountains with waterfalls and water flow! More to Come!
Just a closeup of one of the characters! Final Coloring coming up and soon after Final Image!
