Just an idea (and yes, I know its done the traditional way but I cant sketch on the comp I'm afraid :) )

The idea is that the wizard leaves his home to go out on a mission only he knows about. Whether it will be a good or a bad wizard I don't know yet. Theres a lot of issues with this sketch, but I first want to have a lot of different ideas before proceeding to the next phase.

03-01-2006, 12:46 PM
hmm.. nice sketch but maybe treading on lord of the rings feet there... nothing wrong with wizards.. or homes :) but it look just like gandalf and lord of rings styly... keep em coming and have fun!

I really like the house design. Maybe having a crowd of these together would make a village. A village with a landscape stretching away. Maybe with a lonely coalminer riding away to make a fortune for himself to send back to his wife who is tearfully waving goodbye with their children gathered around her....

Another idea: the story behind this one (in short) is that the horserider on the hill is leaving the country of her murdered husband seeking knowledge of the dark arts of necromancy to get him back.just a story I have had in mind for some time now.

And it seems that I can sketch in PS after all :)

lol I see i've inspired someone :) thanks for the idea

The values in your new piece are very good.

I would place your people somewhere else...perhaps around the area of the second post from the left?

03-02-2006, 05:35 PM
lol lord of the rings again son.. this time ring wraiths watching the road.. sorry but it just remins me of it.. anyway this second sketch is much stornger composition wise . and values are very good keep em coming

hmm I see what you mean with LotR (although I don't think thats a bad thing :) ) but I also suspect it is because my first piece, where I used the cover of the books by Alan Lee (I think he did it anyways) as inspiration, that you get reminded of it.

Then again, this is just a sketch, I will change the mood and bg a bit if I go for this one. thx for the comment.

Idea nr. 3. This one needs some explanation I think:

This is the home of the Rolling Gnomes, a rockband that consist of 4 gnomes (3 guitarists who play magical guitars - some God left them lie about and they happened to be found by an old grandma who took them to her son who lost them in the see were they got dregged up by a fisherman who sold it to a vendor who in turn blablabla - and 1 drum, that's all) They live in the magic Elvenforest of Wargondan where their loud noises and overall presence isnt always appreciated. One day they get an invitation to play at the greatest festival for musiscians ever: Woodrock. So they leave their home to the relief of the entire forest and set out to become the biggest -and first - rockband ever. The sketch for that will have to made yet I'm afraid...

This is one of the Rolling Gnomes :) I made this piece after having seen Nirvana Unplugged on MTV.

I have to say that this is actually the first picture I ever colored on the computer.

The idea for the Rolling Gnomes band is quite old, and so are all my drawings of them, so they need some revising here and there I think.

Just a quick doodle of an idea I had of a spaceship leaving the dock where it has just been build. It now sets out into outer space to take its crew to the corners of the galaxy and beyond.

Made on a red-brown piece of paper, so yeah, its a bit red. Actually, I think that this one is very unpersonal.

03-04-2006, 11:55 AM
fantasy rock band, fantasy rockband, fantasy rock band, fantasy rockband!!!

go with that i'm loving it

Well, I made the choice to go for the Rolling Gnomes, just for old times sake :) I still like them and it's a pity I never did anything with them, so why not use them in this contest.

This is Mick, the frontman of the band. hmmm, I realise I should come up with a name for all of em...

Little problem with this piece is that I want all four of the bandmembers beside each other, and a large background. So I sketch each member separately and then move em around to find the right composition.

I've made some sketches of the whole pic already, but they are very basic and not really worth showing yet.

These two gnomes are the bassist and the lead guitarist.

I have some doubs about the anatomy of the left (for the viewer) arm of the jumping gnome, I'll look at it again tomorrow.

03-05-2006, 10:58 PM
Gods the anatomy of these gnomes is freaking me out :( how to attach legs to their pear-shaped form?? If anyone want to give me some clues, I would be very glad to hear it

In the meantime im going to ruin my sketches to get it right.

Im not yet sure whether I should proceed with the Gnomes, so here is another quick concept.

The great bird migration to warmer continents. Maybe there should be a bird in the foreground or something, but I just wanted to set a mood here.

03-06-2006, 09:17 AM
I would lower the perspektive so that you can concentrate on both the ship and the flock of birds. The wind of adventure and all..know what i mean?

03-06-2006, 04:42 PM
I like the colour of ur last sketch.,but wanna see more sketches from you,i am greedy

This is the drummer of the band. I like the fact that he topples over a bit under the weight of the drums.

I think I'll redo the two gnomes together, because i've redone them so many times it becomes a bit forced :(

this is near to the final composition of the characters. After dinner I will come up with a background, and maybe some first colors.

I still have some doubts about the 2 Gnomes at the left, but I hope to be able to get them straight when coloring.

03-07-2006, 06:03 PM
The good beginning!
Good luck to you.

First shot at the final composition. In the background is the magical elvenforest visible, as well as their home they're leaving behind them. I know the elvenforest looks a bit like Lothlorien from the LotR films maybe I change it later on.

Also, the characters are maybe positioned a bit too much to the bottom of the picture, I dunno.

Any input is welcome (even if you don't like this at all and think I should do something else :) ), this is quite an important phase so I want to do it right.

I'm really not sure if the idea of the Rolling Gnomes is going to work out, and I got stuck for a bit with that piece, so I went to look for some inspiration elsewhere.

This is a sketch I made a while ago, it's basically the same character as the one in my second concept. I want to try to combine them since I really liked the atmosphere in this sketch.

03-08-2006, 11:46 PM
Hi. :)
I think the most interesting part of the 'Rolling gnomes' is the images - wonerfully humorous. IMHO I wouldn't discard them yet.

03-09-2006, 01:53 AM
You have some very impressive concepts, the hardest part will be deciding which one to choose. I think your latest one, although well done, might be a bit cliche. Still, that shouldn't matter, as it's pretty obvious you have a very strong imagination, so you can def make it work. Good luck to you!

03-09-2006, 02:38 AM
My problem with the last one, is the foreground and background perspective doesnt match. look at the top of the carriage. if it would follow the horizon line, you would look up on the carriage roof.

I like all your concepts though, especially the sci-fi drawing. cool design. :)

03-09-2006, 05:43 AM
thats a really very good sketch but as good as it is i think it does not set itself apart from the rest of the pack like your roling knomes does. its all about chracter and emotions of those about to set off on journey. cant even see these dudes faces... and also doesn'tlook like thy are just beginning the journey. anyway fiddle around it will come to you.... you gotta fin this one.. like em you didnt fin spectacular

03-09-2006, 07:02 AM
looks good, only a little "overdark" maybe?

03-09-2006, 04:37 PM
hey all, thanks for the comments.

I know my last 'concept' has many flaws, but I merely uploaded it to show where I wanted to go with the second concept with the atmosphere and maybe even the colors. It's maybe a bit cliche but I do like it. Also, I'll try to bring in the human touch by showing more of the chars and try to evoke the feeling of the start of a journey a bit more.

Well, uhm, the colors on this one look way too cheezy to me, also there a ton of mistakes and flaws in it, but finally I start to get a bit more confident about this piece.

I really should start to think about the composition of this thing :)

I let this one rest for a few days and try out some other ideas, I think I'll choose for a final concept next week.

Feel free give crits, I like to read what you all think about it.

03-09-2006, 10:58 PM
Hi Yoitisi, you have a funny concept here. Great characters! . You are on the way...
I think your characters are too low in the image. Maybe you could change a little the point of view, making it lower perhaps, or maybe a horizontal composition? .

Yes, that is one of the things I didn't want to correct before I got some colors in it. thanks for the comment anyway :)

03-13-2006, 08:59 AM
Haha! this looks great, perhaps you should try to tilt the camera angle - and thus the horizon abit? And I agree with Ramixton "If in doubt, just lower the horizon". Keep up with the good work.

Another concept, done with some markers and stuff. the scan is a bit off of the original. I should sketch digitally I know...

Here I wanted to do something quiet difficult: a chrome spaceship. To make it even more difficult I didn't place it in a dessert but in a lush environnement. Just to see if I could pull it off :) I think I didn't succeed all the way, but the impression of chrome is there all right.
If anyone remembers the forests of the Mirage series of Magic the Gathering, this is inspired by it. Also a bit inspired by the comic series of Ravian, the time/space agent (for the ones who know that series)

Well I realized that I could spent ages coming up with new ideas, so I just made the decision to get on with the Rolling Gnomes.

After this, I also realized that I kind of lost the right mood for this band while I needed to update them because all of my sketches of them are very old. So I put up the right music and started sketching the singer (and guitar player). I will do more of this before I proceed with the final painting, just to get the right mood and pose and stuff (I won't upload all, I promise :) )

Also, any ideas for their names are appreciated.

I love this pencil (or something else?) sketches of yours

I just didnt have the feeling the Gnomes pic would really convey the idea of starting a journey. It needs the background story to much and the picture isn't very open to more interpretations than my own. I want a picture where everyone can think of his or her own story, while still keeping the feeling of a journey about to be started. Hence this sketch.

I might actually change a lot of it, I'm thinking of expanding the station, adding more trains and people, but still with the bg of clouds in which the tracks will dissappear.

03-26-2006, 11:24 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9981/9981_1143372253_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9981/9981_1143372253_large.jpg)

Ok so I got a bit carried away, I like drawing these trains. And once again I should do these things CG once, but I can do it faster the traditional way.

These are some ideas on the trains I want in my picture. I hadn't figured out wether I wanted it to be more sci-fi or fantasy, so I made some sketches of locomotives to see what looks better...I still don't know :) If I do it sci-fi I want to do it in some kind of Feng Zhu style..if I can pull that off, that is.

03-28-2006, 12:19 PM
really great marker sketches .. i love the first 2 designs. keep em coming :wip:

03-28-2006, 12:34 PM
very cool steam engine designs -- sleek and beautiful.....

Hell yes! I love trains! And your trains are very mesmerizing.
