Just doodled for a dew minutes whatever came to mind and a kid playing pirates with his best friend spike came to mind. I have always wanted to do something with a pirate ship... I think this could lead somewhere. I'll doodle more clearly over the weekend.

03-01-2006, 09:27 AM
I like the oversized boots, they bring out the childhood feel. If you keep this idea you might think about oversized(normal) broom or a little one turned around like a sword.

Look forward to seeing more

03-01-2006, 02:26 PM
Nice concept, I'm looking forward to watching come together.

03-01-2006, 03:04 PM
AH!!! This is so cute! Cant wait to see some color :)

03-02-2006, 01:23 AM
hey you buddy!!! nice to see you around! let's rock!! good luck 4 ya:thumbsup:

03-02-2006, 01:29 AM
I like this concept very much. Good luck to you!

03-02-2006, 04:10 AM
Ripples – The boots detail is something I definitely did when when I was younger. It brings fond memories. I got to play the whole broom thing, definitely playing with size. I was also thinking of making a castle in the sky with clouds, that would be opening a whole can of worms in regards to level of difficulty. But I'm also thinking of a few other things... Stay tuned!

riki, Annemee, Samanthie Thanks, there are so many ways top go on this, for some reason the whole kid idea stuck. Kids can fly away to far off places just standing still... I got a few other ideas to share, I just hope I have the time to sketch this weekend. Thanks so much for the feedback.

Ducklator Compadre! Nice to see you again! Let have a great time like the last time.

Good luck to ALL! :bounce:

03-02-2006, 04:26 AM
Love it... No, really I love it! Wonderful concept, very excited to watch this one grow.

Further developing my original concept. Just trying angles and getting a feel for the scene. This time, I placed a pair of polka-dot boxers on his head, Behind him is a window. As if looking up we see two ship-like clouds and a mysterious skull like cloud in the corner. The curtains flow in the wind as if announcing, "something's in the air". More to come...

03-02-2006, 06:14 AM
still trying angles and getting a feel for it. Hope to get more into it this weekend.

03-02-2006, 06:41 AM
nice idea and sketches, Carlos.

Good luck

03-02-2006, 09:23 AM
I like the progress on the concept. Neat to see the different use of the broom. Not sure about the polka-dot boxers, I do miss the belt.

03-02-2006, 10:31 AM
Really loved your concept!
Good luck!

03-02-2006, 08:16 PM
Hi again Carlos!!

I'm already loving your concept.... have lots of fun!

and this goes for the drawing of that kid's anatomy:

03-03-2006, 01:53 AM
Espero que todo este bien. Definitely plan to have much more fun than the last time. I still have one concept to explore and post tonight. Hope I have time, but is still keeping the same idea of the kid. They're are hard to draw because their proportions are "in progress" but when I finally decide on a sketch I got the perfect model. My 3 y.o. nephew, I think I might have to age him a bit, more like 3 1/2 to 4 y.o.

Muchisima suerte Fernando! Que viva España y Ole! (to be said with an accent).

03-03-2006, 03:35 AM
Cool Entry! Really nice Idea dude! I will definitely keep an eye out for this entry!

This is the sketch I was trying so hard to put in "paper". The whole fish tank, undersea adventure. Yes I'm very attached to the water, can you tell? The kids face should express as if he's holding his breath as his mini-self makes it's way to the castle. I might try maybe resting his chin on his hands as if he's resting against the surface and the dog next to him resting his head in similar fashion. Hmm...I'll keep brewing them ideas, feeding me people... Thanks for all the feedback, it is really helpful.

03-03-2006, 09:17 AM
Fantastic!! Really like the lastest concept.

03-03-2006, 09:22 AM
i really love the new concept. i' love how you have the dog and teh boy in each picture so far, something really cool about two spectators in the last one too

03-03-2006, 09:27 AM
im loving it

03-03-2006, 09:35 AM
the latest concept is great.very interesting in a way:)

03-03-2006, 09:48 AM
I very much like idea :)
Beautiful concept
At once be to itself the world of children's dreams, when all of us were involved with such adventures :)

03-03-2006, 09:56 AM
I really like the whole 'ship in a bowl' idea, but somehow having the kid there...doesn't sit well. IMHO the second one is a bit more dynamic and suggests going places more.

Really like the values in the fishbowl idea though.

03-03-2006, 03:01 PM
Carlos!! Great Concept! I am loving it already!

03-03-2006, 03:52 PM
wow Carlos! I adore your ideas! I especially like this last one, great work!

03-03-2006, 06:39 PM
Ripples, storyForge, W!L, sh@ke, krot_art, paperclip, Jose Pardo, enialadam, great feedback!

Paperclip made a very good point and then krot_art helped me find a solution.

Yes, I think it might be a bit hard to read the fact that the kid is seeing himself in the fish tank. I want to read immediately, not as a thumberlina-like character. It doesn't read right away that is the same kid, I could be wrong.

My solution... making him fall asleep w. the dog by his side, at close proximity from the fish bowl. Also making his pijamas match whatever mini-boy is wearing. The finishing touch adding a fireplace in the background, adding an overall dark yet warm cozy feel to the whole scene.

What do you think?

03-03-2006, 07:59 PM
Sounds great, my only concern is whether the fireplace is a bit much or a potential distraction. Maybe the dog is still awake and watching the boy diving in the bowl?

03-03-2006, 09:29 PM
You read my mind, I was going to have the mini-kid diving of the nose of the dog! Dude that's weird... Psychic feedback. I'll give both ideas a try. Thanks Jose!

Here's the revised sketch of the last idea. I think this is getting much closer to my vision. From this point I can work in a color scheme. What do you think?

03-11-2006, 02:47 AM

This is a sketch of the idea I had only described. The forced perspective I think will add lots of depth. Also I plan to use the full moon.... somehow. Hmm, let see. If I decide for this one, I will add more details, i.e. bed posts, frames or posters on the wall maybe a hat hanging from the headboard, etc. I need to let it rest and look at it again, not sure yet on this one...

03-11-2006, 06:45 AM
Very well done compo and choice of colors. Should be very dynamic looking when finished.

03-11-2006, 01:19 PM
Hi Carlos,

I like this composition better, there is more to entertain the eye. Just remember to make sure it is obvious it is the same boy taking the swan dive that is in bed.

Don't kill me. But I had this dream last night and it was this scene. It felt like I was there, I could hear the cheer from the people. Now I'm wondering if I should change my concept...

03-11-2006, 06:17 PM
very neat last image. but i have to point out the scale is prolly not all there. i am sure you where trying to go big with the space ship... which didnt really happen. i think it looks a bit thin and lacks the UMPF that you tried to convay. over all i like the image of the sleeping kid the best. so good luck to you choosing what one you are going with. :)

03-11-2006, 07:06 PM
Carlos!!! Saludos, hermano! Coño, estan estupendos tus dibujos. Y las ideas mejor todavia!

My favorite so far is the kid playing pirates in front of the window. I'll keep an eye on this thread. Visit mine when you have a chance (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3332858#post3332858), I'd love to hear your feedback.

I'm torn, I really like this approach as well. So to help me out, I threw some color, just for fun... Let them simmer for a while...

03-11-2006, 07:18 PM
As much as I like both, I think this one is more original, and TONS more fun. I would throroughly enjoy working on this image myself.

03-11-2006, 07:22 PM
werepumkinHey there! what a great surprise. You know I couldn't let this one go. Gotta keep myself busy(er). Your feedback is always much appreciated.

Slav, I think I'm going to further develop the kid idea. I just needed to put my dream in "paper". Sometimes it just helps decide if you see it.

03-14-2006, 03:33 PM
Hi Carlos,

Your dream image is fine but I have to agree that the kid dreaming is more original and has more appeal.

Here's the revised sketch of the last idea. I think this is getting much closer to my vision. From this point I can work in a color scheme. What do you think?

¡Hola Compañero!

This is my favourite so far, and I think the easiest pose to convey that the boy dreaming is the same boy swimming for the (beautiful plastic!?) shipwreck. I like the action going on in the more recent posts, but unless the journey is to the moon, why include the moon?... also the dog in the flying pic looks a little scary!

Anyway - I look forward to seeing you soon.

03-31-2006, 06:38 PM
I think I agree with avatarist, I think you can instantly see that it's the same boy in that image...

where are you? :bounce: what's up with our updates? :scream:

Yup, I have been missing in action for quite a bit. Now I have to plow through for the next seven days. That's the life of a freelancer. I have so much to catch up on... I have been following the challenge progress and if I finish this on time, consider it a miracle. There's a lot of excellent entries. Oh well... here I go, this is my final line work. I'm starting to paint right on this tonight, wish me luck.

Here's a of the wall, and windowframe. I'm starting the curtains now. Looks so messy, I can't await to get to the middle ground.

A bit more shape to the background. Pictures in frames, curtain is almost done. Just getting the background done before working on the forground.

Man, I don't want to stop. I have decided to crop the image to keep the interest on the bottom. I don't think I lost anything crucial on top. Finally got to the kid, I'm on a roll...

Here's another WIP Color. The Kid needs a bit more work and his pet is in progress. So far so good. Another productive day like today and I should be able to get this done just in time. Still have lots to do – pheeew.

Okay, here I am so far. The pooch is taking a little longer than expected. I should be done with him by tonight. The fun just never stops...

Getting to the fun part. I still have to go back to the kid and work of the face a bit more – just taking a break.

05-23-2006, 03:46 AM
Rock on, Carlos!! This is looking very nice, not to mention progressing very fast!

I myself have not had a chance to get back to my entry. I hope you can ride this wave of energy to a great finish!

Hang loose!

05-23-2006, 04:38 AM
:banghead: No he tenido tiempo! I start a new freelance tomorrow, and I'm so strapped for time is not even funny. Not only that, I don't know if I'll have time finish it. I'm doing as much as I can as type this — just in case I don't get a chance to touch it for a couple of days.
Let's go bud, :bounce: let's plow through and get these suckers done. BTW, nice going on yours image.

05-23-2006, 04:24 PM
Thanks, Carlos. I hear you about the time, man. I have 3 books at the printer, 3 more to illustrate, 4 others that someone else is illustrating and I have to layout, including 2 interns that are doing a book each with my supervision -it's the first book for each. And all these need to be done by July 1st. CRAZAAZY!

By the way, I like the decision to crop the image. I love the room, window/curtains, and the fish.

AAAARGH! NO TIME! At least you are further along than I am. Good luck on finishing.
