Welcome, Shane! Just saw your name pop up, so let me be among the first to welcome you back! Looking forward to some great art (and some great feedback) from you! Have fun...!
03 March 2006, 06:32 AM
Mike! Hey your in this one right? I need to put this thread in my sig AND bookmark it, I only created this an hour or so ago and already it made it to the 3rd page!
Seems like a very crowded room this challenge eh?
I'll certainly leave the best feedback I can, I may have a bit of hurdle with that though, bein out in the boondocks with a enforced 56k connection (anyone want to donate $100 a month so I can get Direcway satellite?) lol.
Makje sure you put your link in your sig Mike so I can track ya!
03 March 2006, 06:41 AM
hello there Shane, welcome to the challenge dude
03 March 2006, 06:44 AM
ahha! Squibbit! Yours was one of the threads I was trying to reply to, but there were so many pics, it was difficult to load. On the "reply" CGtalk feels it necessary to load the entire page just to reply. I'll definatley be checking out all your creative ideas this round, goodluck!
03 March 2006, 10:38 AM
Hiya, gosh it seem to take ages to reply to these threads!
Thanks for your comment on my page, my best wishes to you in the challenge!

tentatively called "Sojourn", the sketch represents and elven adventurer (looking rather young) is surprised as her necklace emits a holographic world map and activates a magical pathway (that the Dwarf is pointing at) to the now just appearing ship on the hand of the colossus carved out of the mountain, which provides an opportunity to begin their adventures around their world. Click to see larger sketch
03 March 2006, 11:00 AM
A close up fo the Dwarf in the background pointing out the path.
03 March 2006, 11:02 AM
This is a close up of the lion centaur girl. All these characters will be more visible once I begin the color wip stage.
03 March 2006, 11:08 AM
I like the sketch. The idea is promising. Really like the lion centaur girl. I'll be checking for more!! :)
03 March 2006, 11:31 AM
Hello and welcome to the challenge ;) Nice composition and story so far.
ps.: did you know that centaur-lion-girl creatures are called Lamia ?
03 March 2006, 01:22 PM
ncie fantasy epic mate have fun
03 March 2006, 06:17 PM
Loris: Thank you, I hope to have more in the coming days, the only thing I'll probably add to the sketch before it becomes a "Line Art" milestone is a more detailed necklace and a more defines boat/ship.
Xillion: Thank you, and your right! I'm embarrased having been a past DM for D&D for 15 years lol.:banghead: thanks for the reminder!
W!L: Much appreciated, hadn't had alot of views or comments yet, but I really appreciate all of them.
03 March 2006, 07:35 PM
OH my god, you already have a vote, Hope to see you in the finals!
I love it!
03 March 2006, 07:37 PM
alot of stuff going on in your image. would be nice to see how it all sums up :D :wip:
03 March 2006, 09:47 PM
rasamaya: well thats an inspiration, thank you!
Slav: Yep I'd agree, I have toyed around with lighting and compositional ideas, and this was the best scenario I could arrange to allow:
Portraiture/ figure in repose (foreground)
an adventuring party (mid ground)
a fantastical iconic figure, the statue
the magical portal to new adventure (the floating stone and the ghostly glowing ship)
Matte painting, the scenic sweeping view of the background.
I really wanted a piece that gave more of a feeling of an entire adventure about to take place, kind of when you look at it, your own imagination begins to dream up where they will go next. I wanted the scene to encompass more than just "trotting off". Thank you and I'll do my best to convey a sense of depth and lighting compositional elements.
03 March 2006, 09:53 PM
to me it seems like you got the concept for what you wanted "feeling of an entire adventure about to take place"
a lot of things to see in this... :applause:
03 March 2006, 05:09 AM
Thank you. I'd had hoped I would have something up more by now, I'll try to get more to the ship design this weekend.
03 March 2006, 05:11 AM
wow great stuff, theres a lot of things going on in the pic. I may be wrong and correct me if i am but the centaur seems more like a guy to me than a girl, she seems so angular. I dont know, im probably wrong, great stuff, keep up the good work!
03 March 2006, 10:01 AM
The "centaur" (really a Lamia, with lion body) looks like that because the the angular nature fo the quick sketch I think. I'll have to find a reference online for the sexiast back I can find to definatley potray this as female at a glance. Because of her arms as its positioned, it doesn't give me the luxury of doing a side breast shot, which would have to be then covered up, and that would mess up the back view. This way I can have a sexy back and imply total frontal nudity, lol!
And to think the Dwarf is pointing at the stones then eh?
03 March 2006, 09:54 AM
Just checking in, it hasn't fallen to the way-side, I've been busy with work right before the LA Wizard Comic book convention and of course everyone has to have thier stuff last minute!
Thanks for your patience!
I'll be back to update soon.
03 March 2006, 11:40 AM
good work with the lines, i liked the beginning, it has everything to become an excellent image.
I´m following this topic.
03 March 2006, 10:33 PM
This is the final ship design. Keeping the design to the ship itself to look like stylised waves and the sails designed similiar to kites and/or hang gliders to give the feeling of air to the mystical ship.
03 March 2006, 10:51 PM
Nice design work ...
Really like your sketchs and concept work...
no crits at this time...
but am subscribing to see how this turns out...
keep after it... looks great so far!
03 March 2006, 08:26 AM
This is my very basic approach to color comp and lighting. The final painting won't look so comic bookish (more like my avatar) but this approach allow me to group shades. I'm not too sure of the sky color, I was thinking if I lean more toward an orange sunrise sky it might pop out the translucent mystical ship, and would increase the orangeness of the elves red hair to boot. If you have thoughts feel free to comment!
03 March 2006, 09:23 AM
glad to see someone letting there inner geek out.
right on, man!
03 March 2006, 09:55 AM
Inner geek huh? lol, not quite sure what that entails, but I'll take it you mean me spewing "color theory". Yeah.
update soon going right into painting the skies.
03 March 2006, 04:19 PM
I use the color flats... (comic book style) of working too... however I have never done it in such a way as to add the shading in at first like your doing there... Thats a great idea to really get all that working right from the start...
Jeas I may have to start over on mine now... LOL:scream:
can't wait to see this one develop...
03 March 2006, 05:22 PM
I love this style! Its kind of like a comic book fused with Golden Axe (the vide game). I can't wait to see it finished!
03 March 2006, 07:28 AM
Finished the sky and clouds. Not a huge undertaking considering there isn't much of it. Next I'll be moving onto the statue/mountain.
03 March 2006, 09:52 AM
Just sloppin the paint around and using the trees and grass as a sort of perspective marker to add size ratio from where they are.
03 March 2006, 10:16 AM
Cool concept, maybe there is a town/city far in the distance on top of the mountain they enter..
Just a thought,
looking good.. keep going!
03 March 2006, 08:29 PM
Thanks for looking! I'm not getting many of those these days. Lots of artists in this competition and everyone has thier standard favorites they always go back to ;)
04 April 2006, 11:17 PM
Hey shane, It's time to shake this painting up a bit! One thing I see that might help this pic is maybe showing the characters faces a bit more so that we can get a feeling as to why there going on this journey. all the lighting looks great, maybe have the characters gesturing for the elf to hurry up so they can leave. :arteest: IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO UNLEASH THE ARTEEEST IN YOU MAN! Crank some updates.
04 April 2006, 06:43 PM
Looking further into this painting, I thought maybe a dark ship off in the distance disappearing in the clouds ! The clouds could be discolored a bit where it's entering. would'nt take much detail or time.
04 April 2006, 07:07 PM
i like the design of this. Very original. i agree that it would be good to see the faces of at least one character to get some emotion in there. I would also like to see a little more atmosphere. Maybee a low sun or some fog and more shadow. Its a bit bright at the mo and looks a bit flat to me. Apart from these minor worries though, i think it's great. I can't wait to see this evolve.
04 April 2006, 04:40 AM
3DCook & domclubb, thanks for your responses. I've just been overwhelmed recently with projects. I think I'll redraw the Dwarf turned around and shouting toward her that something is happening. I'll make time for that sketch tonight and hoipe to get the steam rolling again ;)
04 April 2006, 07:43 PM
Great! Shane, Can't wait to see the updates.
04 April 2006, 07:21 AM
At the suggestion of my peers, I swung the Dwarf around to add some emotional attention at the lead Elven woman, pointing to the now magical passage across the gap.
04 April 2006, 07:30 AM
Try again, servers must be packed, it came up corrupted.
04 April 2006, 01:07 AM
Very nice shane, It's shaping up.
04 April 2006, 07:52 AM
Working on the background and started on the lioness warrior. Still have many hours to go on the figures, the smaller ones, dwarf and Lioness, will take about 4-6 hours each. The main girl, I'm probably looking at about 20 hours.
04 April 2006, 06:37 PM
WHOA AMAZING! I LOVE MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES!!! PLEASE GIVE A SPACE FOR SMALL SIDEKICK CREATURES TOO .. AND CHECK & COMMENT MY SKETCHES...
05 May 2006, 01:23 PM
Hey Shane , looks good so far, I think you should use some dynamic lighting to set the scene for this pic.
