03 March 2006, 02:08 AM
Well, first of all I'd like to say Hello to everyone in the forums, this is my first post here so I'm going to try to make a good impression.
I'm not really sure if I'm even going to enter the contest, I don't think I have enough skill, not after looking at all the wonderful art on this site, the reason I'm here is because I made this thread by accident, and I figured I shouldn't let it go to waste.
If I do decide to make something for the contest I think I'd like to make a "Leaving the nest" kind of scene, something with a mother bird, maybe an eagle, and the baby about to jump from the nest. I stink at drawing so there more that likely wouldn't be any concept sketches.
I hope I can muster up the courage to start (and hopefully finish) a scene as complicated as the one I'd like to make. I have 4 months to work on it, and I hope that's enough.
I hope to post a lot more on this site.

I think I'm going to try making a little robot leaving a big city behind. I started with some rough geometry, and once I'm able to attach images I'll post it. I'll probably just edit this page and add the image.
03 March 2006, 02:09 PM
Well, I changed what I'm doing, I've decided to make a balloon, as you might of guessed, I'm thinking maybe an ant will be in it, but I'm not quite sure yet. So here's the balloon, I think it's near done, but hopefully I'll get some comments that will tell me whether of not it is.
03 March 2006, 11:22 PM
Updated: I added some seems and made the balloon bigger.
03 March 2006, 01:52 AM
Here's a smooth version of the mesh for the any so far:
And here's an unsmoothed version:
It's nothing good yet, but I thought I should post an update :).
03 March 2006, 04:50 PM
Here's an update of the ant. I'm using Zbrush for the modeling.
03 March 2006, 03:18 AM
Here's an update.
03 March 2006, 03:23 AM
you need to go through the submit entry part of the journey challenge (go to the journey forum lok at the top bar, click submit entry and follow the steps.)otherwise you wont get any responses.
03 March 2006, 01:36 PM
Here's my latest update, it still needs work but I think it's coming along.
Thanks dimi16, I'm glad you told me that, I didn't know that that was there.
03 March 2006, 03:57 PM
Great start, yet another different great jounery. :applause:
03 March 2006, 04:42 PM
Thank you, I really appreciate the comment. I'm glad you like it :)
03 March 2006, 11:50 PM
I upped the divisions on the terrian to give it more detail, and I also added some rocks.
03 March 2006, 01:23 AM
I started with the textures, I only put textures on the basket of the balloon, the rest of the balloon is still grey.
03 March 2006, 03:04 AM
Made it brighter, hopefully it will give it more of a sunlight feel.
03 March 2006, 03:15 AM
That's looking pretty cool! It's also my first contest, and (almost) my first posts were made for this contest. I missed the submit entry part on my first few posts as well... just so you know you're not alone in that! It looks like you've got a great concept there - I'm liking how it's going so far. Are you planning on adding more to the scenery? I'll bet some sort of vegetation or maybe a building or two would add to the scene.
03 March 2006, 03:25 AM
Cool! Very nice!
03 March 2006, 03:26 AM
I was thinking of some grass or something to that effect, but I'm not sure, making it could prove to be quite difficult, but I won't know unless I try.
Thanks for the comments :).
03 March 2006, 08:42 AM
For better see of the light effect I suggest you to have a clear bg; Don't make it on black screen.
I think that you should lower your bump or you've got a problem of scale on your modeling.
03 March 2006, 09:22 AM
great idea/concept there, you are probably the only one who have hot air balloon for the journey thats good because its original.
03 March 2006, 09:51 AM
It is coming along nicely! - I don't know why you thought you didn't have the skill to enter this comp.
I'd say since the terrain is such a large part of the work, spend a lot of time breaking up the texture of it and adding details to it, it's looking good so far though. Shadows could be a bit softer too.
Keep up the great work!:)
03 March 2006, 11:26 AM
Looks nice... the terrian need more detail for sure, but you got it really well.:)
03 March 2006, 01:25 PM
Ok, so detail the terrian, lower the bump, add a brighter background and soften shadows, got it.
Thanks guys :)
03 March 2006, 01:31 PM
Looks like you have your next few objectives set out already so nothing to say from me but good luck, your idea seems cool - I like the bugs I'm going down that route too and the balloon looks cool! hope you manage to finish in time (it does get pretty tense towards the end)
03 March 2006, 02:46 PM
I lowered the bump a little, I also made the light a little less to try to soften the shadows and I added a background.
03 March 2006, 01:44 PM
I textured the balloon, messed around with the bump on the terrian and added two rather large trees for some sense of scale.
03 March 2006, 01:57 PM
The added trees really help out the composition and lighting of your scene:thumbsup: although I think a nice bark texture would help identify them as trees right away. Great job so far.
03 March 2006, 02:15 PM
I thought about bark too, and I think it will help, I just have to find some pictures of trees and build a texture for them.
03 March 2006, 02:36 PM
Yes! Now I'm feeling the scale of things, those trees do the business!
Have you thought about incresing the height of your work to encompass the top of the balloon and more of the trees/background? Then the scale would be emphasised even more, especially with some dramatic perspective. I think that would be ace - I also think that it would take you ages so maybe not :p
Looking really good now though, keep it up! :wip:
03 March 2006, 04:38 PM
yep... the trees do help a lot to imagine the sizes. Story already looks promising... maybe you should consider of some second role story elements which helps the viewer to recognize the needs of this journey :) I mean what the hell could a ant drive to that he will leave his sweet home with an hot air balloon :) Oh now I know, I should have watched your thread before... maybe than I would have given up my idea for this challange I had in first place... have a look... btw great work, keep going!!!
03 March 2006, 04:42 PM
I like a lot the clouds.I expect lot more details on the characters , so Good luck.
Would you like to tell me how did u made the clouds?
03 March 2006, 01:00 AM
Well, I changed the textures on the trees and added some more detail to them, I think that's all I changed for now.
Stefan, I used a stock picture for the sky/cloud background, that's why it looks so real, because it is. :)
03 March 2006, 01:13 AM
Well - looks good so far. Perhaps You should consider adding some rocks and plants to better show scale (or something you know very well how big it is - matchbox for example). Also mountains on second plane looks like big mountains, not a some dirt under tree. Keep working and good luck.
03 March 2006, 02:58 AM
You've made some great progress! One suggestion - since the ant who is leaving in the balloon is probably the main character of the scene, he should have the light on him instead of being in a shadow. Highlighting him would be a good idea methinks!
03 March 2006, 03:39 AM
Your piece is great! I agree on the originality of usinga hot air balloon. A camera suggestion: maybe move the camera closer to the alien in the hot air balloon, and lower it everso slightly. This is great!
It's my first challenge too. I'm stoked!
03 March 2006, 10:14 PM
I added more detail to the ants, I added grass, I moved the tree on the right forward and changed the materials on it and I also changed some materials on other things.
03 March 2006, 08:36 AM
really nice improvements you show up with. Just spoted two things which brought up 2 ideas :) 1. Maybe not to put so many of those gras splines in the background or maybe reduce them in size?
2. Maybe your air ballon should already be in the phase of lift up. Like one corner of the gondola still on the bottom while the others are levitating already... your ant could get a grip hold on the metal part just to increase the dramatic feeling...
besides... still like the story, idea and style ...keep going!!!
03 March 2006, 02:10 PM
Maybe I will reduce the grass in the background, and having him hold onto the metal bar is a good idea, I think I'll do that. As for the balloon being off the ground, it already is a little off the ground on the side closest to the camera, maybe I'll make it a little higher, but I'll have to see.
03 March 2006, 01:33 PM
I made it so the ant in the basket is holding on to the bar and to the handle, I also took away some of the grass on the back hill. I'm going to have to do more with the ground so it looks dirter.
03 March 2006, 10:28 PM
Hey Daniel.....ur scene is looking really good......u've managed to get all the necessary elements to depict size and scale into ur scene....keep up good work http://www.blueferret3dfx.com/favicon.ico
03 March 2006, 12:55 AM
Thanks, I'm glad you like it and I really appreciate the comment.
03 March 2006, 10:09 PM
I changed the texture on the balloon, made it something a little brighter, I also messed with the textures and bump for the ground.
04 April 2006, 02:21 PM
Since I need to have a sketch for my entry to be accepted, I figured I'd draw up something real quick.
05 May 2006, 01:17 PM
This image and the Final Image will probably be the same because I'm pretty sure I'm done with it, unless I'm told otherwise.
05 May 2006, 12:50 PM
This is a story about an ant that has decided to begin his journey into a new world and a new life, he and his family are both glad and sorrowful to see him go, he will be missed, but they all know it will turn out good in the end.
