Latest Update: Final Image: Hopes Journey (

03 March 2006, 12:32 AM
Hey all,

Nice to be back at another challenge and I think I have an idea too.

In the foreground a sick or wounded figure is being carried by his companions to a far off temple which has a supernatural look to it. The temple will be on a towering pillar/mountain with rugged terrain in between itself and the characters in the image. Or maybe a quest for knowledge to some type of Oracle .

Just a few ideas....

Anyways good luck to all .

03 March 2006, 12:36 AM
Welcome back dude, best of luck to u!

03 March 2006, 02:21 AM
Good to see you back, Mike. :)

03 March 2006, 02:45 AM
Mike! Glad you're in again. It's always cool seeing what you come up with. Plus it makes me push myself harder to try and improve. :wip: Good luck to ya.

03 March 2006, 07:10 AM
Hi there my friend!
Great to see you here from the very beginning:bounce:
Hope you will get to the end of this journey with some great piece of art.
good luck

03 March 2006, 09:08 AM
Hi Mike, looking forward to see that idea evolve - good luck!

03 March 2006, 10:19 AM
Hey Mike !

Great to see you're in !

Have a lots of fun and best of luck !

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 10:28 AM
good luck and have fun , Mike!

03 March 2006, 03:01 PM
hiya Mike!... nice to see you in too man! will be waiting for those sketches to come!
goodluck man!

03 March 2006, 03:08 PM
Hey there Mike,

Great to see you around again, I wish you best of luck! :bounce:

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 03:57 AM (

Okay, here is a simple sketch of the environment for my scene. The characters poses are going to change but I want the sick or wounded character being helped to get to the Temple by his friend/friends.

There should also be something supernatural going on between the characters staff and the dove which is their guide to the temple.

Still working things out but this is a start.

03 March 2006, 07:53 AM
Nice skecks and concept:)

Good luck to you!

03 March 2006, 09:47 AM
Hey Mike !!

Great concept , and your sketch really rocks !!

keep it up man !

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 04:39 PM
Hey Mike, really great to see that you're doing more terrains, the ones you have done for the last challenges looked great. :applause: Cool looking concept I will be looking forward to seeing it progress.

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 06:03 PM
Hey Mike, glad to see you again, clean and beautiful concept, ill waiting your next update, man

03 March 2006, 10:00 PM
Looks like you'll have a fun time playing with light and shadow in this one, tons of depth. I didn't notice the wounded character very quickly, and it's unusual to see someone who's the staff weilder also being involved in carrying the stretcher. The background is really well done, the solid foreground stone walk is a nice contrast to the tight spiral at the temple. Really nice :)

03 March 2006, 01:52 PM
Hey Guys ,

Thanks for the comments so far:) .

Kary, I am going to change the staff into a chain with an orb that is pulling or directing the guy on his journey . The orb is going to be attracted to the dove , this way the guy can carry the stretcher with both hands.

03 March 2006, 03:19 PM
Hey mr. Moir, very nice to see you there!

by the last Challenge I know that I could wait some kickass work! Your concept shows such a wonderful balance, Ill be waiting for ups.

all the best!

03 March 2006, 03:51 PM
hi mike, sound we are trying on the new journey in this challenge.i like the concept.the bacground look ur temple on the mountain. IMO i really want to see the wounded character more close to see his facial expression.good luck to you mate.i will support you in your 2d thread too.:buttrock:

03 March 2006, 07:11 PM (

Here is a color concept of my original concept, I changed a few things and am ready to start modeling. I was trying to learn the process of painting digitally as I am thinking of entering the 2d challenge as well and this is good practice.

03 March 2006, 07:20 PM
good idea!
but ... .. .
waiting for more... .. .
good luck:thumbsup:

03 March 2006, 07:28 PM
what a great view... what a great start :)

03 March 2006, 08:38 PM
Hiya, I like your idea so far. I think you could really play around with the lighting on this one, some dramatic clouds, rather than it being 'grass is green, sky is blue' kind of thing.

Nice work so far

03 March 2006, 08:53 PM
OMG , looking really sweet Mike , you're right you should definitely show something on the 2d section !

keep it up !

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 09:08 PM
Looks good. You know your lucky... I cant decide on my final concept.

03 March 2006, 09:14 PM
Hey Mike, great update and start into digital painting! It is good to see which way you want to go with the colors, the other changes like pulling the camera back slightly also add a lot to the composition. I read you may go 5D this challenge that is great to hear.

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 09:25 PM
Welcome in Mike! great to find u again, good luck , lots of learning and fun during this new challenge!
Concept scketch is looking great, you know? first i came into this thread without seeing who was the owner after watching the scketch i thought "looks like Mike Moir's" and then I saw it is yours! hahahaha, so you see? u now have a reconizable style! keep the good work!

03 March 2006, 10:35 PM
Well that explains the character to me then :) Colour looks great, will be fun to watch the progress.

03 March 2006, 09:39 AM
beautiful color update.I will wait for more:bounce:

03 March 2006, 04:44 PM (

Here the model of my Temple which is fairly close to what I want. The stairway tower has the basic shape I am after but now I have to add more details and make it look better in general . Any comments or crits let me know.

03 March 2006, 07:55 PM
me like those stairs... :bounce:

03 March 2006, 09:33 PM (

Well, I have done some more work on the tower part . I tried to make it more organic looking and added some details ,like lampstands and some relief work on the tower too. The stairway I think looks better this way .

This is getting close to what I was looking for with the tower part of the model .
Now it is on to the terrain part supporting the tower. C&C are welcome.

03 March 2006, 12:48 AM
Thanks for the comments guys it is appreciated.

auroness- thanks, and I will try my best .
xric7- I will really try to emphasize the wounded characters face in the final image.
coochaki,makaron,rasamaya,kary- Thanks for the comments.
enialadam- I will try to make the left side's sky darker/stormy while the right side will be sunny, that is the goal anyways.
Zapan- I am really going to try and get a 2d entry done.
mmbenya- I am still a hack at 2d , so the colors are probably going to change.
Climax- hey, I have a style , thanks.

03 March 2006, 01:29 AM
Hi Mike

Nice concept sketch and nice to see modeling true to the sketch.
looks promising!
good work.

03 March 2006, 01:59 AM
I agree with climax. You do have a style. There's a definite consistency of quality between this and your "Spectacular". That's a very good thing.
Keep it up.

03 March 2006, 07:27 AM
Great concept and modeling so far !

03 March 2006, 07:44 AM
Lovely start with that temple, Mike! The climbing branches and the irregular shape makes it really interesting - this looks very promising! :)

03 March 2006, 03:06 PM
Hey Mike!

Great start on the tower there. Reminds me on the Neverending far as I can remember that.

Keep up the work!

03 March 2006, 11:18 PM
Hey Mike, great choice making the building more organic looking! :applause: I think it will bring a lot to the composition this way. Be sure to link to your 2D entry and you join so we can check it out.

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 03:00 AM (

In this update I have modeled the Terrain beneath the tower. It is a vertex mesh polyline copied from the base of the tower and I just extruded the polyline and moved vertices to get this shape.

I applied smoothing to the object to get a more organic look. I then textured it using Slope functions and Carrara's terrain bump which works great for this kind of thing.

There are going to be lots of trees on the top part of the terrain so it is not as detailed as the gorge.

Let me know your comments or crits.

03 March 2006, 08:01 AM
Hey Mike !

Great looking tower , totally stylish !
I really enjoy the stone base !

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 03:27 AM
Thanks Zapan,

I still think the stone gorge should be more rugged or jagged but this is far off in the final image.

03 March 2006, 03:36 AM
Looking good Mike! are u gonna put some trees around? can't wait to see more :buttrock:

03 March 2006, 05:15 AM
With the trees breaking up the green this will be spot on I think. You can always work back into the gorge once you have a chance to see all the scene in play. Really looks like your image is going to be comfortably supporting print res. Things are coming along great :)

03 March 2006, 04:11 PM
Hello! again......
Nice concept, and the perspective is really cool.

03 March 2006, 12:49 AM
HI Mike.

See you already started modeling...
Me to man.I decided I'l figure the composition and stuff along the way, while modeling and
texturing characters.

Wonder how you'l come up with your image..

Crit',,it looks as this guys journey ends rather than begins,,if you know what I mean.

Anyway,enjoy this challenge,,seeya pal. :)

03 March 2006, 12:59 AM
Hey Damir,

The guy in the stretcher is supposed to be sick and his friend is beginning the long journey to the temple to seek a healing. So it is like a pilgrimage. There is an underlying story of the journey that awaits us as we die, I am try to tell 2 stories at once.

03 March 2006, 01:00 AM
Hi Mike !, glad to see a carrara's user here ;)

Very nice start for this chalenge.
I think you should put more bump :)

Good luck Mike :)

03 March 2006, 02:20 AM (

In this update I added the trees to the terrain. Still have to add some buildings to this terrain and maybe some sort of paths.

03 March 2006, 03:30 AM
Great style and great work, i saw your other works also on the previous challenges they looks just fascinating, this piece will be one of them for sure, I only suggest you fix the stones that covers the path in the forground they look so high you have to climp them to get to your desired place.

I'll be here to see more, BTW: the trees looks real.
good luck.:)

03 March 2006, 04:55 AM
HI mike! nice and fast start man! I feel something big!

03 March 2006, 05:53 AM
great man!
nice start... ..

03 March 2006, 01:58 PM
Thanks for the comments guys.

][ndy,Kary, melkao,A I R,monsitj,coochaki- thanks ,
mmbenya- I will post my 2d link when I start it. Still need an idea for that though.
Climax- you now have some trees , what do you think?
micaelito- I will try to add more bump, I wish more Carrara users would join in the fun.
FlaminGlow- thanks for the comments, the stone path is big on purpose. The characters in the foreground are supposed to be hobbit like in size , soo a little over half the size of the average person. I intend to have him struggling to climb the path, this is supposed to show the "hobbits" determination to complete a very tough journey.

03 March 2006, 03:29 PM (

Hey ,

In this update I added some paths at the base of the mountain grass area. I used a black and white tmap as an opacity map over my general terrain shader and a combination grass and mud texture maps to it.
I think the paths could be brighter but I think it looks okay.

03 March 2006, 03:41 PM
whooohhlllyyy!! Man thats a terific start! The mountain is starting to be gorgeous...the trees and grass are very realistic and credible..:applause:

Just a question, I love the trees and wonder if they are some sort of "paint fx" tools in Carera ?

03 March 2006, 03:47 PM
Hey Nicolas,

Thanks for the comment. The trees are full 3d tree models that were created in carrara's tree modeler, I then used Carrara's replicator function to place the trees on the terrain. There is really only 3 trees in this scene, the rest are just instances of the originals. So the file size is still remains small but you can have lots of trees, it is a great feature. The added translucency in Carrara 5 helps out too to get more realism in the trees .

03 March 2006, 02:56 PM
Hi Mike,
Impressive start with backround. Clean and readable message of the idea. It's goin' to be amazing with volumetric effects, such as light, atmospheric suffs, mist etc. Lookin forward.
Best luck mate!

03 March 2006, 03:14 PM
That mountain is looking great! Nice lighting and overall shape of it.:)

Just some thoughts that came to my mind:

- I think you could vary the trees some more, they all look too similar in the shape and placement, and seems too artificial.

- The terrain (and windmill, to a certain extent) has a very low-poly look to it. Are you going to be detailing it any more? Of course, this is somewhat hidden by the lighting and texturing work you've done.

Which is great, I might add! Looking good, keep it up!;)

03 March 2006, 04:10 PM
I feel like talk a walk in the forest when I see that :) me like it

03 March 2006, 07:23 PM (

Here is the start of the modeling to the second building that is on the mountain that I already have modeled. There is going an upper to this building as well. I am sort of making this building up as I go.

03 March 2006, 08:07 PM
hiya mmoir, great modeling as always! this is going to cool when done!
cheers! go go!

03 March 2006, 01:56 AM
Tremoside- thanks, hope the lighting comes out okay too.
burpy- thanks for the comments , I will add a couple more distinct trees to vary things up and I may add to the tower but I ran out of ideas when I was modeling it .
makaron,yunisirees- thanks

03 March 2006, 02:52 AM
looking great ! Mike! wait for all to combine!

03 March 2006, 04:14 AM (

Here is the second building that is going on the terrain that I have already modeled. Some things need to be fixed , but I will do that later.

03 March 2006, 02:05 PM
Yeah...:bounce: ...i am waiting too like monsitj ...all the work u are doing to come together....I think it will be a very beautiful scene..

03 March 2006, 05:33 PM
Vey good work Mike !!
The trees add more real mood, and colours are great !
Keep on !

03 March 2006, 06:00 PM
Hey Mike. It's still looking great. That's interesting tiling pattern with the texture on the front of the tower. I kind of like it. Is that one of those "to be fixed" things or was it intentional?

03 March 2006, 06:31 PM
Those are nice modeling and texturing! The mointain looks really good!

03 March 2006, 07:30 PM
Hey Mike very glad to see you here again my friend, Ill keep an eye for your updates.

Gooood luck

03 March 2006, 08:28 PM
Hey Mike, how are you dude? Man, looks great so far and the sketch is impressive. I can't wait to see more

03 March 2006, 10:09 PM
Hey Mike, excellent work I see you are on the way to another beautiful landscape! The new building looks great!

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 08:34 AM
Great modeling Mike! This will look terrific in the end, keep up that good work.

03 March 2006, 10:41 AM
like this house.. good and "clean" "simple" design :)

03 March 2006, 03:05 PM
good buildings!:scream:

03 March 2006, 09:54 AM
Hey Mike !!

Really nice building , awesome details !
Can't wait to see all things gathered in your scene too !

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 03:32 AM
Truly a excellent concept sketch as stated by others , i like the idea and the layout this to will rock like your other enteries.

03 March 2006, 03:27 PM (

Well, I haven't done much lately with the challenge so I needed to get something done. So,here is the middle ground modeled with the textures added. I wanted a desolate feel in the foreground part with trees and grass on the back part of the foreground.
The buildings are there just for a sense of scale, I will add different buildings on rear part of the new terrain.
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

03 March 2006, 04:07 PM
Hey Mike, the landscape is really taking form! You're doing an excellent job conveying the desolate feel you are after. :applause: I was starting to get worried you didn't have time for the challenge. Glad to see the update man!

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 04:17 PM
great work here!
textures looks good & great environment!
but do you use any plugin to creat this trees ?if yes ---> what is it? if no ----> how?
because it looks cool!
looking for more... .. .

03 March 2006, 04:39 PM

I use Carrara Studio by Eovia which has a tree modeler built into the program and it also has a feature where you can replicate instances of the trees on the terrains. You populate your terrains with 1000's of trees with no big hit on memory . I still have to tweak the trees though, I plan on doing the grass in the extreme foreground using this feature as well.

03 March 2006, 09:28 PM (

In this update I added the lake/waterfalls as well as the distant terrains. I also rotated the light in the scene to more what it is going to be like in the final.
Next thing to do is the distant terrain on the left side of the image.

03 March 2006, 09:54 PM
lake/waterfalls looks great!
how you do it?
other than,great!
looking forward... .. .

04 April 2006, 11:23 AM
Wow Mike your scene is looking more amazing each time I see it! That waterfall looks really neat! :applause:

Matt :)

04 April 2006, 03:58 PM (

Hey ,

In this update I finished off the terrains in the distance and on the left side of the image. I added trees to some of the distant terrains and I am debating about adding trees to the most distant terrains. I don't think they need it, what do you guys think. I also changed the lighting a bit more, a little brighter .
Well, now it is either modeling the foreground or building some bridges.

Comments and crits are welcome.

04 April 2006, 03:59 PM
Wow...nice enviroment...beautiful view!

04 April 2006, 04:37 PM
Nice job! I like that you didn't forget the atmospheric perspective.

04 April 2006, 04:39 PM
Hi Mike, your scenary looks awesome, very realistic and reach, keep up, I'll be waiting for updates, good luck!

04 April 2006, 10:18 AM
It's been a whil since I saw this and you really made some impressive updates. The scene looks beautiful, and very realistic! You're really good at this kinds of scenes - congrats

04 April 2006, 01:23 PM
:surprised :surprised :surprised It's real !!! :applause:

Freakly impressive work Mike !!

cheers ,

04 April 2006, 08:56 PM (

Well,I started modeling the foreground terrain. Lots left to do , this is just placing the stones and doing a grass test and seeing how it works with the entire scene.

I will add some clover to the grass and some larger broad leaf plants and stones. The tall cube in the foreground is roughly the size my character is going to be, I want him small compared to the stone steps as he is hobbit like in size.

04 April 2006, 06:03 AM
Insanity! I like it. Nothing wrong with the enviroment in my opinion. Keep up this level of work. I also like the fact that you still have this whole landscape supporting a simple cast of characters in a small beginning. You know, it expands over the view, one has a sense of destination and the focus is just where it should be in my opinion ( I have a lot of those).

04 April 2006, 02:23 PM
Hey mike....your view is everytime getting better!

04 April 2006, 05:03 AM
u cud use some haze 2 show some depth and distance

good work

all the very best

04 April 2006, 05:07 AM
Truely excellent Mike !
those big blocks in front add more impact ;)

04 April 2006, 11:13 PM
Hey there Mike, great looking updates! :applause: I really like the slight change in the light color you gave the last one. I hazard to guess how many trees your scene has in it now, amazing work! :bounce:

Matt :)

04 April 2006, 05:25 AM
Whoohaaa.. this is great. Its a very nice scene!!

04 April 2006, 09:20 AM
Nice work, Mike!
I like the landscape a lot. One question, are you going for a painted look?
At the moment it looks like it was a painting! Really good!

04 April 2006, 10:10 AM
Hey pal,
You have always nice jobs and you are a great competitor .
I have a comment on the work.if you can just change the colors of the trees in the background, use some yellow,red,..or add some dried tree. And if you could use some warm colors for the ground.
overally the progress is great.I'll followe your thread.

04 April 2006, 10:14 AM
Wow! that just wonderful image!and amazing work!

04 April 2006, 11:51 PM
damn, al i can say is wow !!! :argh: :argh: :argh: :argh:

I was scrolling so fast to see all images, i didn't even search to with what software u use.
Very amazing background and atmosphere. Can't wait the modeling of your character.

04 April 2006, 12:39 AM
great image , but i wonder if you modelled the whole building in the background with details and if you can see those details ? :)

04 April 2006, 02:06 AM (

Hey all , in this update I worked on the stone steps and gave them more texture . Also worked on the grass ,added more color variety, finer blades and placed the grass better .
Finally added some more stones strewn throughout the grass.
I still have to add some large leafy type plants but I am happy with the way it looks.

ramy badie
04 April 2006, 02:19 AM
This is really awesome, just great work. Really strong image technically and has a lot of impact. I love it :)

04 April 2006, 03:04 AM
wow, amazing render so far...very clean =)

04 April 2006, 03:46 AM
Wow amazing grass , my frien...very realistic your escene!:scream:

04 April 2006, 01:12 PM
Hey all,
Just responding to some previous posts here.

Palantion,AWaqas- Mike thanks for the comments
mmbenya- thanks. Havent counted the trees.
coochaki- about the water , I just uv mapped it and used an alpha map to create the white parts of the water.
se7ethcin,cryinghorn,Gunilla,Zapan,Melkeo- thanks for the nice comments
asbassie-thanks,that was what I was trying to do. It is good to have opinions.
iamawizard- I will maybe add some more haze, hoping to gain depth when playing with the layers.
micaelito-Thanks , hopefully the big stone steps provide the scale for my small characters.
][ndy- I don't think I am after a painted look but that isn't a bad thing either.
adel3d- Adel, thanks, good ideas. I was thinking about adding colors for the trees . I will give it a shot and the dead trees is a good idea. Hmm, maybe make the small stones I added more red/brown.
tuck,ramy badie,adonihs,melkao- Thanks
Nothingness- I use Carrara 5 Pro to do my modeling , it has some nice landscaping features in it.
thedirtypaw- I did model the smaller building in fairly high detail, maybe some of those details will be lost , but thats okay .

04 April 2006, 02:21 PM
ok, thanks man.
looking for more... .. .

04 April 2006, 12:46 AM (

I have updated the foreground terrain,I made the grass a different shade of green and made the stones a warmer color. Also added the larger leafy plants and some small flowers.
Is this better than the previous version.

04 April 2006, 09:53 PM
Great terrain! looks very believable.

keep it up.

04 April 2006, 10:55 PM
Hey Mike, what I can I say that hasn't already been said many times before, your stuff just simply looks great! I am really digging the new warmer colors you're using in the scene, it gives it that summer day feel. Keep those updates coming! :bounce:

Matt :)

04 April 2006, 03:50 AM
You are good modeling Nature and landscapes, I wish i were that good! But hurry up my friend time is running out and your last update was on april 9, don't let us down! :bounce: see ya!

05 May 2006, 08:38 PM (

Hey, it's been a long time since I updated anything so I thought I should do something .
I added the Posts and Rope bridge to the foreground and you can also see the distant trees are a little warmer colors.
Hopefully I can get around to other peoples thread soon too. Let me know any comments or crits.

05 May 2006, 08:57 PM
Hi. Great landscape you have here. I like the sense of depth. The trees, stones and grass are also great ... maybe some gradient on to the lake would help to make it more visually atractive? What about some coloring based on the depth of the lake? But anyway, maybe thats just my vision. :)

Good luck, I am so waiting to see how things develop in this final round-month. ;)

05 May 2006, 04:56 AM
Hey, thanks for the C+C.

I havnt seen yours for a while either. Great lighting, it reminds me of the program VUE, or at least what there advertising to show off its great features. The duplicate building throws me off a little. Your grass looks great! And those stones!. Makes me want to work harder on mine too! Thanks. Your background-ground looks like the PS sharpen tool was used a lot. I hope you can see what I mean. Really though I feel aquard giving you critique considering how good looking this image is.
Cheers, see ya around.

05 May 2006, 05:06 AM
I agree with rasamaya, this looks like a professional landscape! Very well done! Looking forward to seeing the characters! Hope you keep up with it...good luck!

05 May 2006, 12:00 PM
Looks wondefull, I've never seen so much foliage in one cg image, it looks really rich and gorgeous, it's going to be really interesting to see your final, good luck man

05 May 2006, 03:02 PM
hmm... nice details, like the dof and the grass... is Vue isn't?

Hey all,

KOryH,mmbenya,oceanbluesky,CryingHorn- Thanks for the comments
Climax- yes, it's been a while since my last post . Hopefully I can finish it.
InTerceptoV- That sounds like a good idea. Thanks.
rasamaya- The 2 buildings are temporary, I will have other buildings in there place. As far as the Background being sharpened , this is just a straight render but it is low resolution so hopefully the full res render will help out.
alvin_cgi- Thanks, no this isn't Vue , I used Carrara 5 Pro for the entire scene, Carrara is an all purpose 3d application which has some good landscape features.

I really like your render. The colors, layout, and detail are excellent. I only have one teeny weeny little bitty crit.

It seems like the distant background is too detailed and clear at such a long distance. Maybe if you bumped up your haze ever so slightly so that it would cause the background to look even farther away and more natural. It would also help to focus the attention to the foreground area. Just a thought.

05 May 2006, 05:34 AM
Wow, those little details gave the image another dimension:arteest: I could say it everytime I see your threads, You Rock with natural landscapes :buttrock:

05 May 2006, 05:36 AM
Wow! I haven't seen this for some time and you're really doing a nice progress here! I have to agree with Omar, you are a master for landscapes of this kind... absolutely beautiful

05 May 2006, 08:14 AM
Hi Mike,
your image is getting better ans better everytime!
Now it's amazing !

Go, go !!

05 May 2006, 07:44 PM (

In this update I added a couple of bridges and also added the houses and buildings to this middleground area .
I still should add stuff too the dry barren terrain by the closest bridge or walkway. Maybe some dead trees etc. This is just a quick render to see how the additions look.

05 May 2006, 08:10 PM
very nice updates man!

great details!...:buttrock:
looking for more...
keep going mate---=>... .. .

05 May 2006, 02:36 AM (

Well, did some more modeling. Here is a model of what is suppposed to be a middle age style wheelbarrow or small cart. This wheelbarrow will carry the wounded or sick character so hopefully you get a feel for the small size of the characters.
I still need to fix the texture for the wood part of the outer wheel but I am happy with the way it looks. I should be able to start modeling the characters next. Let me know if you have any comments

05 May 2006, 12:27 AM (

Hey, I have finally started modeling the characters. Well I started the Head on this model a couple of weeks ago and I started to finish him off. He is supposed to be an elf size character but a little stronger looking.
I still have to add the hands but this is about as much detail I need for the body. I will work more on the feet and hands so they are a little more detailed.
I modeled the head using the extruding method by starting with a single polygon and kept extruding. I have only box modeled heads before and this method worked out well.
Let me know what you think.

05 May 2006, 01:45 AM
I have no experience at all in realistic human figures (or elf-sized characters) yet so I can't offer much help there. Although maybe the ear is a little low. But you definitely have the start to what looks like a really good character. I am also amazed and extremely impressed by your thread so far. The scenery and detail and the cart are all looking wonderful

05 May 2006, 01:56 AM (

Well, I have done a bit more work on the character model . Started the hands, but they need a little more detail, I think he is starting to look like the character I want.
I modeled some tools for their journey(shovel, axe, water jugs, etc) which will go in the cart , I will post this later.
Let me know your comments or crits.

05 May 2006, 02:15 AM (

In this update I continued on with the clothing, may add a few more things like ear-rings and maybe some type of bracelet for the wrist and neck.

Just a question , in the submit page it still says I have to submit "turntable" but there is no Turntable option in the milestones , what gives.

05 May 2006, 02:17 AM
Sorry, Double post.

05 May 2006, 12:17 AM
wow, yours just stepped up a level. Great job with your background architecture. Looks way better.

Thank you for your advice on my thread.
I was gifted enough time to finish mine.
Check it out
But be sure to click parts of the image to zoom in to 100%(almost)

05 May 2006, 03:33 AM
Wow that backdrop detail is tremendous. The cart looks great, and it'll be very interesting to see that and the character integrated into the scene :)

05 May 2006, 07:55 AM
great job!

nice character!

keep going mate... ... .:scream:

05 May 2006, 02:43 AM (

Well, I am sort of done with texturing the character. Now I will pose him and create the wounded character from this one. Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

05 May 2006, 01:01 AM (

In this update I added the posed character,I didn't rig him I just moved the polygons around . I was trying to get the Pulling action for the character which I think turned out okay.
The hands on the wheelbarrow were a little tedious but not as hard as I thought it would be.
I will do a higher quality render when my next character is in the scene as this is a very quick render.
Let me know what you think.

05 May 2006, 01:03 AM
Arghhh:D , Sorry for the double post again.

05 May 2006, 05:34 PM (

Well , I have added the second character to the scene. I wanted him to be weak and uncomfortable looking . Now I just have to do the sky and add the bird that I have modeled and a few other things.

05 May 2006, 08:09 PM (

Hey all,

I created a sky in Carrara 5 using the volumetric clouds , I wanted a dramatic looking cloud formation on the left and wanted a calmer peaceful sky on the right.
I made the tower and tree visible so I could place the clouds better. I think it turned out okay but would be glad to hear any comments. The lighting will change to hopefully add a bit more drama to the sky too.

05 May 2006, 01:16 AM
Hi Mike, thank you for dropping by my thread. Your architectural background shows through your lovely compositions and sci-fi pieces. Very nice.

The carrera sky is a too sterile for me. You could dramatise it a bit with a bit of matte painting later. The time feel also doesn't match your character's shadow, meaning, the shadow cast by the character indicates a 3.30 to 4.30pm time, the carrera clouds and sky looks more high noon. Of course, I'm in the tropics, so maybe the atmospheric colours would be different.:)

The terrain looks good, especially the aerial perspective. Which prog did you use for generating it?

Great stuff and all the best with your entry.

05 May 2006, 02:42 AM (

Here is the sky with the complete background setting,I just now have to play with the lighting and model the necklace/orb and then I can start to render.

05 May 2006, 02:43 AM
Hey Vincent,
I am quite sure the sky was done with the same light position as my main file but I will check and hopefully my small lighting changes will help out the atmosphere. I used Carrara for all the terrains too, the VM modeler mostly and I used Hexagon to model the characters.

05 May 2006, 10:52 PM (

Hey ,

I added the bird to the scene and the orb/necklace around the main characters neck. Also changed the texture on the tree trunks on the right side of the image.
Playing with lighting and then it is time to render the layers out.

05 May 2006, 05:53 PM (

Here is a composite of all my layers and a bit of postwork, I have to add the smoke to the fires and some sort of shading to the foreground.

05 May 2006, 06:57 PM (

Just another , compostite which is a little brighter than the first one.

05 May 2006, 09:41 PM

look at details..
very nice updates .
keep going mate..
best wishes to you...

05 May 2006, 07:28 PM (

Well, here is a Final image or at pretty close to final. The colors seem alot different than on my machine , hopefully the tiff I give them is closer to what I see on my screen. I will upload a story later on.

05 May 2006, 07:16 AM
Excellent scene.

05 May 2006, 08:01 AM
It's really lovely Mike, I think you reached new levels with this one - definitely my favourite among your work. Now good luck for the final steps - it already looks finished to me

05 May 2006, 08:24 AM
Looks great mike.
The only thing I would do is to push the difference between the foreground and the distance. You can do this with color. Right now all the greens are close in hue. Try warming up thr FG and pushing the BG to the cools.
I would also like to see some color in the shadows. that will go along way towards making this feel rich and atmospheric.

Great entry!

05 May 2006, 08:37 AM
You are always one of my favourite artists!

05 May 2006, 08:48 AM
Congrats man! this is looking very good, I like the scenery and the details! Good luck for the voting:)

05 May 2006, 10:07 AM
Hi man, sorry i haven't been able to come check your thread. But WOW what an alsome environment! i really like the story telling in your composition too. I do agree with KOryH about breaking the foreground and background a bit, seem a little flat in in terms of depth. I think this will be a great piece when you got your final! keep it up, nearly there :bounce: gogogo!

05 May 2006, 04:14 PM
Hey ya Mike, goood image, like your style, its like a epic old oddysey

05 May 2006, 04:46 PM

The Journey Begins (
Spectacular 3D (

05 May 2006, 01:02 PM (

Final Image: Hopes Journey

The Faeling are a good natured and strongwilled people and despite there small stature they have strong character. You see these three and half foot tall Faeling don't see very well , they don't see obstacles that are in their way . So , it seems to us they can accomplish heroic deeds but to them they just never give up.

So it goes with Sejun , when this Faeling's commrade falls very ill he ventures out into our world because of a story he heard of a great healing monument . It would be a great and sometimes perilous journey but finding one of our wheelbarrows he loads up his friend and some supplies and ventures into our world on Hopes Journey, a trek to the healing monument to save the life of his commrade.

05 May 2006, 02:37 PM
Hi man, you've made a great picture, I just think that there is to much blue color on ambient in the near image layer, it spoils everything, the previous version is better to me. Anyways the image is really great I have never seen so much foliage in one peace. You are a true master in this field  good luck in judging

05 May 2006, 04:57 PM
very nice image ! congrats! man! depth of image , atmosphere ,modeling and texture work are very well done! good luck and see you Mike!

05 May 2006, 11:37 PM (

Well, here is another last minute update. I removed some of the blurred D.O.F plants on the left and played with the lighting on the foreground.
I am finding that I have the image the way I like then when I upload it , the image looses its brightness. Could this be that my gamma value is different from Cg talks image converting stuff. It is frustrating because the changes I make don't come through on my uploads .
Does anyone know what Gamma value to use?

05 May 2006, 11:48 PM
Wow great final image, I really like it much!

Good luck:thumbsup:

05 May 2006, 03:32 PM
well done... Mike... I really like that impressive landscape...

the story goes well to the picture too...

05 May 2006, 04:12 PM
Woah! Has a very classical feel to it. Its a shame I didn't follow this more closely, it is truely impressive work.

05 May 2006, 04:21 PM
Wonderfull Image Mike, Congratulations, as expected it is one of the mjust beautifull works around, lots of details and a superb nature job, I congratulate you for this magical piece and wish you luck with the jury

05 May 2006, 10:00 PM
Wow Mike, you don't disappoint, the image looks wonderful! :bounce: The composition really gives you a sense of the journey that has already taken place and how much more needs to be done for them to reach their goal. Excellent work as always! Best of luck in the judging! :deal:

Matt :)

05 May 2006, 02:27 AM
Good composition and good work. The journey must be hactic. All the best.

05 May 2006, 02:47 AM
COOOOOOL final........good luck:thumbsup:

05 May 2006, 05:51 AM
Great to see how one of these larger epic scenes that has so much going on gets compiled together , fine demonstration of the power of Carrara!

05 May 2006, 09:07 AM
Congrats mmoir!!! It was apparent that your entry was going to be strong entry from early on. Good going, the environment looks totally convincing. Best of luck with judging.
