Um.. i sorta been busy :( but did some thinking. haven't really got any solid idea yet though. I did some brain storming sketches and i though i might just post it to get some comments. I hope i can get a soild idea to start soon :S

03-14-2006, 04:43 PM
Hi man...very cool idea, and i cas see tht you like the sea escenes,
waiting for progress:wip:

03-14-2006, 11:19 PM
Hi melkao, thanks for droping by :D

I think i've got my story worked out now :D here it is:
"In a deep freeze it all ended, but it was also a new beginning.
As the sun rose up from the horizon two perfect beings were born.
They broke away from their cocoon and set foot on a brand new world."

I sorta wanna create a forzen world with vast strange/alien landscape and the birth of two new beings (adam and eve). These two new beings won't be human but some new kind of life form, it should be fun designing them and their cocoons :D

anyway hope to have some concept soon, i better get a move on :D

well...what i can say...is a great idea...very nice concept:thumbsup:

03-15-2006, 03:39 AM
I like your idea. It is unique.

I did a really quick sketch of my idea very roughly atm. The two beings look very human atm but will be more alien/strange later i think, but i'll attemp to make them beautiful. The cocoons are yet to be designed, this sketch was purely for composition and feel i guess. I'll still play around with the composition later. Comments are most welcome :)

I've done a quick concept of the cocoon, i 'll prob play around witha few more designs but here's the first one. comments are most welcome :)

03-16-2006, 03:12 PM
nice start , wait to see more , more power to you:thumbsup:

03-16-2006, 03:55 PM
wow...nice......ehhhh....what you say that is what?....just kidding...very nice drawing and abstract concept!

03-17-2006, 12:15 PM
Lovely design for the cocoons. I think you have a really strong concept going - with all that ice it can be a really magnificient image. I'll be watching of course :)

03-17-2006, 07:01 PM
The sketch is very strong, it's really will be great in 3D, i'm waiting for updates, good luck dude.

kreuz: thanks man, pwoer with you also :)
melkao: hehe yep looks a little abstract, hopefully it'll make some sence with the characters coming out of them :P i hope, thanks man.
gunilla: Thanks mate :) you got some cool concept going on too man
alancamara: thanks man, i hope to start 3d soon, please come check it out :)

I did some designs over the weekend for hte beings that will be born out of the cocoons. i did some variartions of the male one and just started the female. I sota wanna make them look less human though and maybe smaller/skinner hands and feet. Their shading will be icy and some places will be very translusent like geco skin and some areas might glow. maybe the shading will do the job making them less human.

03-20-2006, 02:10 AM
looking tops Tom :) . Your concept sounds pretty solid.

I love your work and will be watching this one closely.

03-20-2006, 08:16 PM
This is a really great concept I think-quite adventurous too, but so was your fantastic whale from spectacular! really nice concept sketches.the cocoon looks great and original, and as for the figures, I prefer figure 'c'. look forward to following this, and good luck!

pixelPickle: thanks mate :)i do my best
shakes: Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I quite like c also for hte skinniness. I've sorta pulled the design out a bit more now :) i hope you'll like it

I've been doing some thinking and decided to make the beings a bit more alien/animal like, i've also refind my layout concpet a little bit more. I'm hopeing to finalise my concept by this weekend to start modelling, but i don't wanna rush it, hopefully i will finish :) anyway please leave comments if you like, ta, cya

03-24-2006, 03:45 AM
There's something really dreamlike and expressive in your new layout drawing. I like it a lot. Especially the character to the right. I get the feeling of some kind of heliotropic thing happening here.

03-24-2006, 03:49 AM
Looks great- I like the developed figure, and the face alot.hope we still get to see that great cocoon!

03-24-2006, 03:52 AM
I really like where this is going. I particularly like the idea of the aliens being less human like.

03-24-2006, 07:36 AM
Very nice designs for your characters - they look friendly and a bit sad ... will be perfect in the environment :)

glenn: thanks man, i'm happy that the image came across this way, that's pretty much what i was hopeing to achieve :) coolio
shakes: ta, yep i've updated the cocoon now check bellow :)
Andrew: thanks man, yep i sorta want these being to be a bit more out there, and i thought i might try doing somehitng more creavtive rather then makeing existing subjects.
Gunilla: thanks :) hopefully it'll fit well inthe environment like you said, thanks for coming by.

I think i'm pretty much ready for modelling and i did start blocking out the layout now, i hope you guys/gals like the design, i feel ok about it but i'll refine it again in 3d so it should be cool. comments are welcomed

03-27-2006, 06:52 AM
Oh wow, your the one who did the Whale picture - I love that image :)
Beautiful work so far, the alien design is awesome.
Good luck :)

03-27-2006, 07:38 AM
Interesting and original concept! Will follow your progress. Good luck!

03-27-2006, 09:30 AM
These concepts look very cool, and I know you are more than capable of pulling it off in 3d from your previous work so I will definately be watching this thread closely. As said before, with all the ice and new alien materials this should be very visually stunning. :)

03-27-2006, 10:22 AM
G'day Tom. Your concepts have come together nicely, looking forward to seeing the initial work on the models :)

03-27-2006, 11:39 AM
looking great..happy you're going into 3d..not that I didn't like your drawings, which are tops! the mockup looks good- the figures maybe look a little small in the pick- but I'm sure you'll make it look brilliant! looking forward to this alot.

womgoose: Thanks, so cool for someone to recognise my work :) best of luck to you too
Thierry: Cool thanks man, you entry is one to watch too :)
Matthew: Thanks, woo this one looks like a challenging one, i'll try my best.
PixelPickle: hi ROB :)
shakes: yep yep 3d now, sorta busy, as you know e3 is coming up lots of work to do, i do my best to catch up. Ta :)

I've done a little bit of work over the last week, not much though, gotta catch up.

I've sorta done more concepting in zb and will use this as a guide to build my polys in max, that's why it looks so rough and bumpy atm. Doesn't looks cool at all atm but i thought i might put something up anyway :) thanks, comments are always welcomed, Ta.

04-03-2006, 09:03 AM
whoa, thats a werid looking one, very orignal, very cool.

gotta catch up. yeah, I know the feeling, it's crazy how fast some of these guys work.

04-04-2006, 01:53 PM
Perfect being my arse, I could throw him down in a arm wrestle any day, lol

Seriously, I like the character design by ussing Zbrush in this manner I think you are really getting the most out of such great software. Keep playing man. Something I might think about in terms of cahracter design is being able to clearly apreciate what is muscle and what is bone. take the calves for example. here they look like addition knees that dont serve a purpose. If they were stretched out like blades (eg pelvis) they they could pass as a tibia bone. Maybe somethign to think about when fooling around.

But loving the direction your heading in and great concept all round. :)

:edt: also something that strikes me as a little to out of poportion is the pelvis, I guess I am thinking of how mobile this being is. I understand that having proportions like this projects a certain image you are trying to achieve, and I like that image, so I wouldn't want you to ruin taht but maybe adjusting the width this can also be achieved... my 2 cents (and a little more:))

04-04-2006, 02:18 PM
Wow...thats a very strange model....but i think is cool:eek:

Over the weekend i model one leg only :S how productive :P. well i really gotta get a move on... nothing special but comments are welcomed

3Dspine: thanks mate, yep it is a weird entry, i'm sorta just letting lose to see what i'll get int he end, i hope it'll look good in the end.

Tilite: hehe yep skinny he is, but he can control you mind :D hehe. Yep i totally dig what you're saying man, anatony and funtion in a design is what makes it work. I'll try incorporate some elements of recognisable muscles in some body parts but a lot of this "being" is exoskeloton/jelly like so it probaly won't move have human anatomy. I'll try and keep a balance between the two though, hope you'll like it in the end. thanks man, and nice to see ya again, and you're forum leader now that's cool :)

melkao: thanks, glad you like it :)

04-11-2006, 06:43 AM
cool model mate! nice loop! but how about your workflow? look like you free form sketching in zbrush and then take high res into max and rebuild the new topology base on the high res one? why didn't you use the high res as final?

04-11-2006, 09:21 AM
Hi Monsitj: Thanks :D Yep i did part of my concepting in zb, then traced it with better edge flow. Cos i did my zb model over really really bad topology I just thought i'll do a proper clean model that's animatable this time, just for "fun" and just giving myself more hard work really :P

04-11-2006, 08:54 PM
beautiful work mate..lovely detailed modelling. the face is really great, and very great and original body you've done.

Shakes: Thanks man, glad you like it, i was worried people will find it weird :) i like weird stuff

I continued to do some modelling, i basically split up my zb concept model (sorta rough) and then used it as a guild to trace over in max. I'll then be adding normal maps and texturing in zb afterwards... got easter long weekend coming up, i'll see if i can get more work done :) comments are always welcomed

04-15-2006, 07:39 AM
I like your idea of doing the concept in Zb and modeling over it...Never thought of that. I may have too credit you if I take up that method. Very imaginative scene, I like how the modeling is coming along on the leg, very sharp.

04-16-2006, 09:53 PM
hey yeah, certainly a different approach to modelling, always good to hear how others do it. Nice updates, wanna see some more :wip:

04-17-2006, 11:13 PM

sleepinglion: thanks mate, i think there're some people doing similar stuff, zack petroc does it in he's gnormon dvd but in a more planned way, good dvd worth checking it out.

M477: Thanks, glad you like it, i'm taking to long though :P

I continued the modelling, basically placing polygons directly over the zb model. I place verts down along the groves and try to follow curves for a better edge flow then go fixing it up. HTe male being is nearly done now i guess, then i'll do variation for the female and then do normal maping and texutring in zb.

04-18-2006, 08:33 AM
Nice one. I have a tiny crit - the torso seems to lack those lovely hard edges that are present on legs, is a bit too organic imo. One more thing, the character looks sad - downward pointing ears and the mouth shape contribute to that. Scince he is just being born, he should rather be curious, or surprised, or something ;)

04-18-2006, 09:32 AM
Interesting model you're doing Chih-han, the face and legs are original but it seems maybe the torso could be displaying a more precise underlying bone structure, unless it's a costume.. SO keep it going like this and good luck for your next models:thumbsup:

04-19-2006, 09:03 PM
very cool, original& exressive character!! good continuation chih!

04-20-2006, 04:59 PM
nice strange model my friend!

04-20-2006, 05:41 PM
Good to see you here, i really liked your spectacular challenge entry. It's surely going to be a good entry. Good luck.

04-21-2006, 12:07 PM
azazel: Thanks man, sharp eyes man well spotted. I totally agree about the shapeness needed on the rest of the model, I'll prob add more sharp edges in poly or maybe in zb, nonetheless it's needs sharping. Regarding the sad look i sorta wanna keep it towards the sad/innocent/akward look, sorta seeing a horse/giraffe/puppy being born, they always seem akward and slightly weak, i sorta see a beauty in this "fleshness" to the new world. I see ya point though, anyway i really appreciate you suggestion but i'm gonna ive the akward look a shot. I really look foward to you entry btw

thierry2005: yep it definately need to look more convincing as a living being atm, hopefully zb pass and texturing will be a big help. Thanks for visiting and commenting :)

melkao: Ta :) glad you like it, appreciate you visit man

mkerouch: nice to see you too :) thanks, means a lot man :) "going to be a good entry" hehe it's still too early to judge, i haven't done that much yet :P

Anyway at the moment i'm sorta stuck with a bit of day-time-work stuff untill next week :( i do have a change with my concept though, well not really a change but hte BG and arrangement with the characters have changed a bit, will be reblocking out the 3d-layout. Basically BG will no longer be ice-berg like, more like mountain top (block vocanic rock type) and covered by snow. Hopefully i'll have picts to show next time. Thanks for visiting and commenting guys :) cya soon i guess

04-22-2006, 06:11 AM
wow, that's quite hardcore, tracing your zbrush model!! really lovely modelling..the figure is turning out really well.keep it up!

Shakes: Thanks mate, It's quite time consuming now that i'm at this stage :P i'm just gonna zb the coccon i think, i hope i'll get though faster later. Glad you like it :)

ALL: I've done the poly modlling bit for the male now, and will be finishing the female soon, I'll be zb detailing and texturing soon after that. I'll be adding more sharp lines and design then, i'm gonna keep it subtle though, but have some sharpness to it. Please come check it out then should look more interesting then... i hope :P

05-02-2006, 09:25 PM
really lovely work, Tom..that face is fantastic..looks a tiny bit like a baby lamb!

05-03-2006, 01:13 AM
Looks like you are well on you way and enjoying what you are doing atm, want to see these textures :)

I'm glad to see that you are considering more than aesthetics in your modelling of the characters. And it does sound like you are heading in a good direction.

And the forum leader thing... yeah... it is cool :)

05-03-2006, 01:21 AM
Hey Chi-han,

Nice looking stuff , I really like the colors and feel of your concept sketch. Those characters are pretty interesting looking , I look forward to what you do with the background and scene in general.

05-03-2006, 02:17 AM
Hey what a strange alien...is really a cool new concept...the arms are particular strange....nice job:thumbsup:

Hi Long time no see :) sorry been busy at work. I've started to do some detailing on my meshes in zb now. At the moment i've got the head, body and leg of the male being done up. I'll continue with the rest on the female tonight and hopefully update again tomorrow... i plan to the get the texturing anf cocoon done over the weekend cos i'm so behind :P wish me luck hehe...

Shakes: Thanks man, yep i was thinking of a lamb when i was modelling too, i like the innocence :)

tilite: Hi man, yer i'm going a bit more experimental this time, and i hope to show some textures very soon please come check it out then :)

mmoir: Thanks man, i'll try to keep up the updates, I'm thinking a grand snowy rock mountain-ish background... still a while from making that though, i hope you'll like it, you always have very nice environments :)

melkao: Thanks, yep trying strange stuff this time, a bit of experimentation :)

Off to work now, sorry from not keeping up with checking others' site for a while, been so busy, will do soon, thanks for visiting and cya for now

05-11-2006, 06:07 AM
Beautiful details for your Alien! Good luck with finishing this now, I remember how fast you where the last time so I've no doubts you will make it in time... really looking forward to this one :)

Been detailing my female being model in zb, will be baking normal maps for my less-high-poly model :P gonna start texturing now... Will do my cocoon over the weekend, this one will simply be a pure zb model since it's static.

I'm planning to make the landscape fairly fast, i hope by making some generic pieces of rocky/snow piece and mixing them with unique pieces and putting it together like lego.

gotta get working now, time is running out, hehe i'm always in a rush :)

gunilla: thanks for visiting friend :) hehe i'm giving me too much work again, i'll do my best to finish.

05-12-2006, 06:26 PM
They are coming along very, very nicely. If i had to crit something, i'd say you could push the difference in the faces a bit more - i like the way you did it now, nice and subtle, but may not be enough to be clearly visible in the big image. Maybe make the female face slimmer, or something. Just a thought.

05-12-2006, 10:10 PM
beautiful modelling- I love the way they're in seperate bits, and all just piece together! you should get a 3d model made of it! beautiful character design.

05-14-2006, 11:39 PM

I did some modelling over the weekend, here is the cocoon (base), I just made a rough mesh in max and sculpted in zb.
I've nearly got all the main models ready now, texturing still to come... time really is running short, although i might not have time to make many changes, C&C is welcome :)

05-14-2006, 11:41 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/13/9902/9902_1147650099_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/13/9902/9902_1147650099_large.jpg)

This is the current shading of the character, I'm sorta going for the translusent/gecko look, i think i'll need more work on the color variation still looks too flat atm. I like the fave though :) sorta innocent. Anyway thanks for viewing, C&C are welcomed.

05-14-2006, 11:42 PM
really lovely work ! very original and unique design for the cocoon. zbrush continues to amaze me!
edit: wow, just saw the textured creature.. fantastic ! love the colours and eyes. So glad you're finishing this.

05-15-2006, 03:34 AM
Awesome Job. The design is fantastic! Did you render the image in any particular render? I like the SSS effect going on in the ears.

05-15-2006, 06:49 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/13/9902/9902_1147675750_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/13/9902/9902_1147675750_large.jpg)

This is basically the same process as the cocoon base, i do a block out mesh in max and just zb away. C&C are welcomed :) i hurry on to more work now cya

05-15-2006, 06:54 AM
shakes: thanks mate :) glad you're liking this, yep i have to finish... maybe some sleepless nights is approaching soon :P
Sleepinglion: Thanks a lot :) um i rendered the sss effect with just the max default renderer; there is a transluent shader in max which is not very accurate but works quite well for high-poly meshes with waxy look. I then did a multiply with a seperate ambient occlusion pass in mentalray. hope this give you a clear idea :)

05-15-2006, 03:09 PM
wow ! very nice detail work! how many polygon you got in the latest one?

I'm working on the female shading now, got the head only atm... similar idea to the male one :) c&c are welcomed...

05-15-2006, 11:59 PM
monsitj: thanks man :) um i as i can remeber it's around 700000 poly. not too high i only have 1gig ram :) that's one reason i split up my character into multiple body parts.

05-16-2006, 01:14 AM
wow, you're doing well with 1 GB RAM and that many polys!! good thinking. the textures are lovely

05-16-2006, 02:41 AM
yeh the textures are great. You seem to have nailed the ears but the further away from the ears the less and less this looks like skin. The translucent effect is mighty cool and would suit you design so well - hope you can pull it off, deffinetly on the right track.

Is this all procedural mapping? And could you post an image of you texture tree - would be keen to see what this shader is all made up of.

But as I hinted before about the realism. I'm thinking it looks a little like concrete or a faded metal. Or in other words flat :S lol. (as you mentioned)

But great work. keep it up:thumbsup:

Hi hhssuu, Congrats for your character. Very nice detail and form. Keep going!...

Hi here's a little explaintion about how i created the translucent shader. Basically i used the handy and simple transluent shader for 3dsMax's default renderer; all i gotta do is create a mad indicating the color that would be under the surface and chuck it in the "Translucent Color" slot in the "Map" tab and tweek until you like it. The rest is pretty simple diffuse, specular and normal map etc. The renders are quite fast (around 10 seconds) but the results will seem a little too jelly-ish so i composited with an ambient occlusion pass in photoshop.

I have my translucent render as base, then i have a "level" over that just for tweaking darkness, then i have a ambient occulsion with a color burn layer blend at 25% and another ambient occlusion with multiply layer blend at 50% over that, and finallt a curve adjustment layer on top. Apart from the idea of multipling a ambient occlusion on top of my max render all the other stuff is just subjective and tweaked until your eyes feel good/ok with it. Hope my explaination is clear :)

shakes: hehe thanks, yer i do my best with what i have, i should get an upgrade :)

tilite: hi mate, nice comments, i did some alterations on the shader (for the characters... haven't posted them yet:) but i have some explaination for the shader in this post hope it explains clearly :)

dorian3d: Thanks mate, yep i gotta work hard for the final week, gogogo~

Hello :) here's my cocoon shading, i sorta decided to change the color since the environment isn't gonna be blue/icy any more (it's gonna be more dark rock mountain and snow). Um 7days left now and there's still a whole landscap to make plus various flavouring pieces to fill in, i think i might have to think of some smart/shortcut ways to finish this. Heres my plan:

I'm gonna make various generic pieces of land/rock/snow and scatter as much of the same instance as i can but rotating them to make less repeated, i hope :)

"tubes" attached between the beings and the cocoon will be kepted simple and textured with procudual shaders?

The background elements might involve some matte-painting, the sky will definately be photo+painted.

um that's about it, i hope you like it. ta. cya

05-21-2006, 10:37 AM
superb shaders mate..I really hope you finish..good luck!!

05-21-2006, 02:56 PM
too logn time for an update man....good job lik always:thumbsup:

05-21-2006, 03:07 PM
hhssuu: Beautiful coccoon, spielberg is so happy with this hehe

Ah i forget, thanks for the useful info about the translucent shader

05-21-2006, 04:52 PM
Wow, that looks beautiful, very delicate work and thanks for sharing you technique, good luck

Hi i modelled the foreground terrains over the weekend, and shading (see next post). Um i just blocked out a rough shape then scuplted as high-poly as my computer could handle, then exported at the second highest division with a normal map baked with Zmapper. hope you like it :)

05-22-2006, 01:38 AM

Here's a shaded version of the forground terrain, I placed in the cocoons and some organic stuff to blend them in a bit. The placement and poses of the characters are also blocked in. There're some more foreground elements to be placed in but this sorta can give you a feel of it :) The background i will be building a zb model in the same way as the fg and using it as part of a matte painting. hopefully i'll have more to show tomorrow, Ta. cya :)

05-22-2006, 01:44 AM
For creating terrain in zbrush, you can't use a plane can you? I tried this and whenever I tried to use PM the mesh flipped to the underside. The displacement painting wouldn't mab either.

Btw this is very impressive terrain.

05-22-2006, 07:57 AM
Wow. impresive shading and modeling for terrain...

05-22-2006, 08:40 PM
the terrain looks really good, excellent textures again- glad you're powering on!

05-22-2006, 11:18 PM
Womball: thanks man, yer it does flip if you use an open mesh, i sorta make the terrain bit to what i like then close up the mesh with as few polygons as possible :) hope this help.

authentic: thanks i keep working on it, hope you like the full one.

shakes: thanks man, yer 4 days left, POWER ON! GOGOGO! :D

feel eger to continue doing challenge stuff with 4 dyas to go and much more to do. but gotta do day job :( looks like it's gonna be some sleepless nights in the days to come. rigging my characters quickly to pose them and should get on to rendering tonight, hope to show some stuff tomorrow :) hopefully

I am so sorry I missed this thread until now. I love your style. Very organic. Your characters are amazing and original. Very nice indeed. :applause:

Hi sorry for the slow update, just been busy rendering. Anyway i've rendered a background terrain made the same way i did for the foreground, then i added details manually in photoshop, i also painted a sky. If zoomed in to the terrain you can see some brush strokes (sorta rough) so i might still detail that up before the final. hope you like it :)

Since i haven't really posted a complete full body of the characters i thought i'll post it now. The roughness of the backgoud could be quite clearly seen here... i'll probably add more detail.

Hi, nearly there now, here's the comosite and post wip. I quite like the lanscape but still a little iffy about the placement of characters, although i might now have enough time to do it i was thinking of posing and placing the characters differently... but maybe not :) um to get the look i wanted i lighted foreground, background and the characters seperatly, i kept all the render elements seperate and also rendered a ambient occlusion of compositing. Comments are most welcomed :)

MT Cup: Thanks for visiting, and i'm glad you like it :)

05-25-2006, 01:38 AM
wow..environment looks extraordinary..amazing work on it man!!..also the character design is good...no crits

hello again, thanks for the support guys, nearly there, i re-rendered the characters and change the image proportions a bit, i sorta felt the last image looks a little like the 2 characters are climbing up the silloette of the mountain in the background :) and they were sorta small... so heres the new composition. I doubt i can make any big changes now time is short now and i'll continue to make colour tweaks etc. hope you like it and as always coments are most welcomed

05-25-2006, 02:54 PM
hi, i think this compozition i'ts far better the the other one, the "flyung" it's much better illustrated here, it's softer, if you understand me :), and beside this here appear and a connection between characters, so, from my pov, it's a good move this compozition
keep it up and hurry "slowly"

05-25-2006, 03:30 PM
wow!! i like this one better too!!!

love...well....o love every thing about it...so simple but so cool!!

wicked :)

05-25-2006, 05:19 PM
This is a very beautiful image. Composition, colors, unique characters,...well done! :applause:

i reposed the characters since late time so i thought i'll post another close up. here it is :)

05-26-2006, 01:55 AM
It kind of seems more like they are meeting rather than leaving each other. The previous pose I think works better for the Journey concept.

here's a close-up of the cocoon and terrain

05-26-2006, 02:33 AM
wow really nice athmosphere in there!

I agree with Womball about the pose. U can't understand the story well in the last pose. In the first one though, she's like running to his direction too, so it's difficult to see they're leaving each other

05-26-2006, 09:24 AM
Cool work and nice modeling mate, sorry I didn't have more time to support your picture... but you got all my best for the voting! See you next time again!:)

Hello :) um i think i'm done now, i changed the pose of the male again, hope this one show the "journey" element more.

Here's the story of the image:
"At the break of dawn came the end of the deep freeze.
From the cocoons arose two transcendent beings.
Their journey has begun...

I made slight corrections to the color, only a little bit :) this is the real final now

Title: Break of Dawn - A New Beginning
At the break of dawn came the end of the deep freeze.
From the cocoons arose two transcendent beings.
Their journey has begun...

hope you like it :)
