In putting together some ideas, I definitely wanted to have a child heroine and a fallen city. This is officially the idea I'm 'running with' over the next few months.

Started modelling the saber. It will probably have a diamonoid-type blade.

That looks a lot better! For the hair you should adjust your emitter life. I know your using blender too. ;-) The hair is rather faceted as it is, and would look better if it were more curved. I am not sure if you increase or decrease the emitter life though, its been awhile since I messed with it. For the skin you may want to play with a toonshader. This character seems built for it.

Not bad at all. The eyes strike me as being at an odd angle like they're sloping toward the back of her head at the top (if that makes any sense), but other than that, I'm liking it. The transperant blade on the sword is a nice touch. Keep up the good work. :thumbsup:

Thanks for the comments. Womball, for the hair I turned up the "Skip Particle" to 7 to speed the renders up a bit. I plan on taking it back down for some nicer images.Thanks for the bit about toon shading. I'll try it out.:)

Did some modelling work on the arms, and debeefed the fingers. Worked on the textures.

Hmm...perhaps you can play around with the textures some more. They look too "clean" if you know what I mean.

Needs some wear 'n tear. You know...scratches on armor, dirt, grime, etc. Personal choice, though. I don't know...maybe this is the look that your going for. :shrug:

I know what you mean (as it's squeaky clean atm), but from what we've seen so it looks like this is going to be quite stylized in the end. Once we get a look at it integrated into the environment then calling for a grime layer might open up -- and thats a layer of detail that can be added in late if the form is sound.


How did the toon shader work out?

I would suggest her skirt needs a slit, or similar, in case she ever needs to take a medium/long step :)

Hi there Delisa, great concept and start on the modeling! :thumbsup: The character is looking really good, the only sugestion that I might make would be to lengthen her legs. They look a little short right now in proportion to the rest of her body.

Jedi-Juice- I'm still unsure of the style of the look I may go for, so I might hold off on grime for a while, at least until I complete a few more of the other elements of the scene.

kary- I haven't gotten quite the effect for the skin that I wanted with the toon shader, but I'm still experimenting, though. I hadn't even thought about the complications of not having a slit. Thanks for the idea. :)

Matt- The legs are a little short, but I was trying to get some more childlike proportions...is it a little too much?

Hello co-blenderhead!

Since his start, my main critics to your model is about too agressive lighting. Perhaps i hate speculars :-). Yet can you begin placing your character in a sort of environement to start playing with other model light settings. Until the character is not placed is hard for me to add suggestions to him, which reveals a very owned craft, (and this last is a good thing).

About your model i think is too linear in his arms and angulous in his face. But i think also you have decided yet for this look. Correct me if not.

I'm sure that I'm not explaining very wel, sorry for my english

After a somewhat long break (school just happens sometimes...) I can finally post at least something. I worked out the tree to be small and birch-like, though I'm undecided as to whether I should have leaves (not that I've finalized modelling the tree yet). I wanted the tree to be on the edge of the forest, and beginning to die; maybe perhaps having a definite edge to the end of the forest where on one side it is green and then on the other it is dying/fading. I had a few gress fronds and a flower to experiment with the types of objects in the forest and some possible textures.

This is just a personal preference, but I think that your grass looks too thick (the actual blades of grass)? I think that that might help make it look more realistic. I wouldn't make it more specular since most things in nature are not specular unless they are wet. Maybe you want to put a little variation into the color and texture instead.

I think that you have done a really excellent job grooming the grass. And it has a really natural feel the way it is falling on itself. The tree that you've modeled and textured really looks great too. :applause: I don't think that it necessarily needs to have any leaves on it since you want to it be on the brink of dying. Keep up the good work, I am looking forward to seeing more updates! :D

I modelled my idea for the gateposts and composited them into the original scene. Thanks for all of the comments thus far. :D I did go back and edit the tree some, adding some roots and such, and then added a sky to start to get a feel for the scene as a whole. Still to be decided: Sunrise, Sunset, or Moonrise?

I really like the organic feel of the background! However you have some floating orb holders that don't look like they are hanging from the tree. Since orb holders hang via a fingery like branch, you might want to have them go perpendicular with the branch . ALso make sure there is no gap between the upper contact point of the appendage since this is supposed to be affected by gravity.

Womball- I think we're having a misunderstanding... :curious: The orb holders are supposed to be sticking out of the ground rather than hanging from the tree, somwhat like those tacky lawn ornaments, but less...tacky. ;) Do I need more space between the objects?

Oh! Than you definetly need to space them out from the tree, and probably shorten them. If you squint your eyes they blend into the trees, which is why I thought they were hanging from the trees.

It's definitely crunch time, and time is something I do not have! I am trying to finish up and get a feel for what the final image will be like, but nothing is satifactory so far. Some bits are still a bit messy, I know. I plan on shrinking the beast further into the background and then add the ocean and flaming sunrise. I'm hoping for a grand finish. Also, I hope to set some illumination to the blade, (perhaps just a subtle glow) and then just finish up the post effects.

Comparisons for some possible postpro setups (while i'm waiting on that really, really big render. :) I'm having alot of angst over the DoF Node setup, as it looks a-ok in the foreground...and just bad in the background.

Some more work with the DoF, slightly better results. :) Also, tweaked the lighting/sky a bit. (Anti-aliasing is off for a quickie render)

It may be a bit overkill, but lens flare definitely looks cool. AA is still off.

The post effects make it look much better! The grass looks wonderful. I would blur out the dragon a bit more though. He looks a bit close to the girl right now.

Yeah! I got it to work after I figured out that I had my lights restricted to one layer. :surprised It worked out well.

How long did each layer take to render? And what type of file format did you export from blender? I'm debating whether or not TIFF or TGA is the way to go. I don't want huge 27 mb files for renders, but that may be the case.

edit- nvm about the format, tga seems to be the way to go. I had RGB selected rather than RGBA selected for my image output.

Ok, the main layer (with the character, grass, tree, etc.) took about 2h on a 2.2GHz processor. the background layer (the beast, hill, ocean, and path) took about 40 minutes. I used TGA RGB format...and yeah, it was huge. The final render at 4096x2560 after compositing and converting into TIF was about 30mb--it didn't seem that I had a choice, though.
