Sh@ke: thanks <--funny it automatically underlines your name and won't take it off.
03-03-2006, 02:34 PM
I scanned some of my sketches that I will probably use. I found that my scanner unfortunately doesn't like 2H pencil. Bummer. Anyways, I started by thinking about some of the possible ways journeys can begin, such as through tragedy, by bing forced, or happened upon. However, I think I would rather show a happy moment than a sad one. My concepts are still churning. But, basically, the concept that is currently sticking out at the moment is about a couple of fairies merrily heading off on their adventure aided by a couple of bullfrogs. I have a few other concepts as well that I may work up and see where they lead me. One of them is in the top lft corner.
I'm going to be on spring break for a week (starting tomorrow) and hopefully, when I come back, I'll have something substantial.
03-03-2006, 06:21 PM
Hope you're feeling better now?
Thanks very much for the feedback and especially the link to Robert Parke Harrison's site. VERY inspirational. The "old world" feel of his photography might have me changing my whole color scheme...
For your frogs and fairies idea. The one thing that strikes me about that is that there should be some sort of definitive purpose for their adventure. Tell the story of WHY they're together and WHERE they are going. Also.. it might make sense for one of the fairy/frog pairings to be a bit more dominant in the composition.
PS. Where in SC do you live? My immediate family is mostly down near Greenville.
03-04-2006, 02:07 PM
marcoracer: yes, as I said before these are ideas that I'm still toying with and working out the kinks, that's why I haven't talked about the story yet. Thanks for your input though. Also, I am from the Greenville area. However, I go to USC in Columbia, graduate in may..yay! I'm still figureing out where I am going to do my grad work.
03-15-2006, 04:48 AM
So basically I was a bum over spring break.
But what better way to get back into things than doing Really quick thumbnails. Here's a screen shot. Let me know your thoughts.
03-15-2006, 05:40 AM
the underwater piece in the portrait format looks pretty good to go with:)
03-15-2006, 07:17 AM
I'm not really sure how you will make them look like the beginning of a journey, but the rough sketches look very nice. I like the right sketch the most. I want to see more of this :)
heya melody, I like the on on the right as well .. looks well balanced compositionwise :)
Altough ...something with horses could profit from your amazing horse-drawing-skill :D
03-15-2006, 04:50 PM
Great work! Lovely sketches. I like the idea of an underwater scene! :)
03-15-2006, 07:36 PM
nice sketches... come on more more more..whats your idea?
03-15-2006, 08:00 PM
Thanks for the input guys. The verticle format one is the one I'm leaning towards as well. However, um...it's not underwater... that is something to consider, but I was just going for it to be dark outside. Perhaps I over saturated it a bit.
Yoitis: There is a story for this, I'll probably post it if/when I settle on this one and put up the line art. But the faeries are leaving "home" ...*points to faerie waving in lower rt. corner
Vahn: hehehe...thanks. I'm still playing with the idea of doing something with a horse, but I don't know
W!L: I'll post some more sketch stuff later.
03-18-2006, 04:21 PM
Well, I've had these sitting on my screen for awhile...just haven't had time to put them up. In fact I lost one of them that wasn't saved when my toe hit the restart button... Anyways, the horse ones don't really work in my opinion, I was thinking of like an abduction. Perhaps, barbarians pilageing and plundering.
03-18-2006, 05:01 PM
more thumbs. Their off to a slow start on that first one...lol.
03-18-2006, 05:36 PM
I like the idea of the frogs underwater and also the atmosphere of the person lying against the horse.
Curious to see what you go with!
03-18-2006, 10:18 PM
concept: This is the most important event in a faerie's life. For on this night those of age set off on an epic journey in order to enter adulthood. They have been prepareing for this event for most of their lives. They celebrate with feasting and merrimaking for days before they actually set off. They use Bullfrogs because of their ability to travel long distances swiftly. They will face many hardships and perils on this journey, and for many it will shape the rest of their lives. They learn their place in the world, find a mate, establish hierarchy, and become a valued member in society.
My intentions with this image is to give it an old fairy Tale quality.
03-18-2006, 10:23 PM
Update, update, update... I worked on the line art and doing these color things simultaneously...yeah... woot for multitasking. :)
03-18-2006, 10:39 PM
Nice color comps, good luck again, Melody!
03-19-2006, 12:21 AM
I am having way too much fun here. :p
03-19-2006, 12:23 AM
woops, i got the order mixed up... well it's not critical.
03-19-2006, 12:55 AM
u got frogs too? aww man now i gotta change concepts!
ps. all 4 5 and six look very good , exciting and have nice mood, totally forget #8,
7 is a bit too green too
03-24-2006, 05:55 AM
I know I'm terribly indecisive. I just keep haveing ideas pop into my head. This one(people riding on a subway thing)is about many people on many different journeys. This is really really rough and I haven't figured out all the characters by any means yet... just a thought...this concept intrigues me.
03-24-2006, 05:59 AM
This is another concept I've been thinking about as well. It centers around a forest fire. The animals (mainly deer) flee for their lives, leaving their home and everything they knew behind. They must now set out on an epic journey in search of a new place, etc.
03-24-2006, 07:16 AM
nooooooooooooo run bambi run!!! :argh:
instant childhood meomries that bring me close to my painlimit to cry tears! awesomeness, cute cute fawns, sweet sweet rabit. What a drama!
as for the fairy travel, colorset 4 looks very nice, but also the bit colder version2 wich has a great feeling for a night lite set. and any kind of effect light might get nice effect on it.
as for the initiation ritual itself, hahaha, a jumpy journey, they might be quiet shaken after that ride, poor fairies. nasty elders.
keep up the great work, great concepts, lovely and promissing, would be nice to see a colortest for the forest scene as well. keep up the great work melody :)
03-24-2006, 08:04 AM
nooooooooooooo run bambi run!!! :argh:
me too cry that here... Bambi run. run... Bambi was my first comicbook and my favorite since then...
I like this comp you have... really shows that they run for their lives :)
I still prefer frogs & fairy ( i like nr 6 )
Its just too good :D
03-25-2006, 05:30 AM
Squib: heh...somehow missed your post before. Thanks for the input. I'll keep it in mind.
the1rstangel: lol...lolol...you're so amusing. I'll see if I can work up a color set for the forest one.
makaron: hehehe..I'm so amused.
Vahn: Yeah, I like #6 as well.
everyone: You guys are so not helping my indecisiveness. I feel like I am on one of those game shows...door number one, no two, or is it three...:D
03-25-2006, 01:51 PM
think you've got your brain working overtime here, all ideas are great, i think the frog & fairy concept has the most potential, the idea works for me. very nice colour comps i really like 1 & 4.
03-27-2006, 01:42 AM
4 and 9 jump out at me like a frog with a fairy on it's back. i think it's the warm light from the lanterns bringing the fairies out against the cold night bg.
glad to see i'm not the only one messing with several different ideas. i really like the fairies on frogs one though.
really really good stuff.
PS - thanks for the comment on my thread. very insightful. i agree on both counts.
03-29-2006, 05:08 AM
First off, a few replies:
Philbarnard-yeah I think you are right. My brain does have a tendency to run off with me. Thanks for the input.
Anzibon-Thanks. Yes, messing too much probably..lol.
Well, I have actually been working on the faerie frog concept, however it's not quite at a point where I can post any substantial wip yet. The above was a small sketch I did while talking to a friend of mine on aim...and was inspired by her as well. She brought being a pajama pirate and so I came up with this. The boy who instead of sleeping is heading off on an epic journey in his imagination as a pirate on the open seas. So I thought I'd share. I'll keep working on the frogs though.
04-06-2006, 03:33 AM
man, it seems like I don't ever have any free time so I can work on this. It's really sad. And squeezing 30 min. here and there doesn't work very well. But anyways, this is what I have so far...just a start. I'll be flipping it to and fro as I work on it, think nothing of it, it will most likely end in the orientation with which it started.
04-23-2006, 09:45 PM
Well, school has been all consuming... but now I'm done! Hurray! So now I have time to throw at this.
Just a little update, face not done...but at least this ends my no positng streak :):)
04-27-2006, 11:21 PM
An Update: coming along, slowly, but surely. Still a long ways to go. I hope I can get it finished in time.
04-27-2006, 11:25 PM
Good luck, Melody! Looking nice!
04-29-2006, 05:43 AM
This is some of tonight's work. I think posting keeps me working :)
04-29-2006, 05:45 AM
wow, that's really grainy in jpeg
05-16-2006, 05:35 AM
I am a bit slow...but it's coming. Now's the time when you start thinking about and freaking out over that encroaching due date. :)
05-16-2006, 10:22 AM
:) Great work Melody...
I love the atmosphere of the piece and the your style of painting.... The frogs look really good as do the faces, though I'm not sure about the proportions are quite right, especially of the top figure.
You could always have wisps of translucent material flowing over their bodies - this would emphasise movement and match the decorations in their hair as well has helping to define space.
Anyway enough of my waffle - great work and good to see that you have some spare time to finish this
Looking really good!! :) :)
05-16-2006, 11:25 AM
Pleases me very well. The two women are naked. With the lower woman is not further problematic. With the other woman I am strained above whether she does not get little material nevertheless at the end still another. ;)
05-21-2006, 03:05 AM
Thanks for the comments guys!
Yeah, the top figure has been bugging me alot. I have sinced changed it somewhat. I wish I had a model to pose for me.
I'm still debating on any clothing or decor on the figures and what kind of wings to do and such.
05-22-2006, 05:19 PM
Here is the redone pose. Hopefully, it will do alot better.
Now back to work I go.
05-27-2006, 10:10 AM
I wanted to post a close up before the final image. So here it is.
05-27-2006, 10:37 AM
Finally finished. Yay!
I really enjoyed this challenge even if it was a bit rushed for me due to not being able to work on it for a month or so (other obligations).
I do feel that I reached my goals for this challenge and thusly satisfied with the result. I wanted this piece to have the old time fairy tale/story book feel to it, and I also wanted to use this opurtunity to hone my skills and process further.
I hope the viewer can feel apart of the sceene, and the joy and excitement of the faeries heading off on an adventurous journey. In order to incorparate the viewer further of the faeries waves a final farewell to the viewer while still holding on to her bullfrog.
Thanks to those who have stopped by this thread, and congratulations to those who have finished.
05-27-2006, 10:40 AM
Congrats on the finish! I could see you improve during this and I really like the frogs!
See you in the next challenge....
