A milllion thanx for the encouragement guys! Right now I'm on a twelve hour routine thats has me exhausted... thats how a chemistry student's life is you see... Anyway I promise I'll be posting the first sketch this weekend, but for the moment here's my idea:

A sea voyage of discovery and colonization. On the background there's a huge ship docked, and there's a lot of activity going on, indicating that itīs about to set off. On the very foreground, a mother saying goodbye to her eight-year-old child. Probably this is the last time they'll see each other, so that gives me a good chance to show a wide range of emotions (or at least try to  ). Everything is surrounded by a rocky setting, being huge rock formations both in the background and foreground; hopefully this way I'll create the feeling of enormous scale and epic journey. I want it to look as a historic moment, something like 1492, but seen from the perspective of familiy from very humble backgrounds who is forced to take this opportunity to give their child a better future.

Thats it. Its a very ambitious project, and I don't really know if I'll be able to paint half the things I've described, but the image is already in my mind, so thats gotta count for something :)
Once again thanks an see you around.

First sketch. Bit disappointing, I know, but I've realised I'm no good at pencil sketching. In the lower right corner is the composition I'm going for. Comments and crits welcomed!

bad joke. anyway, i think we need more info about what you're going for. are you going to have a tight framing like in the lower right or is it actually going to be picture in picture? at first i thought you were showing an xRay image of what's inside the ship. that could be neat too, but tricky.

yeah, so i'm intrigued. your sketching is good, it shows plenty, just need to see actual framing and see what we get.

good luck and have fun,
