Well, I'm in on this challenge. Sounds like a lot of fun this one.

I have to finish another project I'm working on first, then I'll start on this one. Shouldn't take too long.

:wip: :buttrock:

02-28-2006, 07:33 PM
good luck Michael- look forward to following it!

02-28-2006, 07:59 PM
Welcome back! Bring it on...

02-28-2006, 08:01 PM
Looking forward to seeing your entry Mike!

02-28-2006, 08:15 PM
Where are the rules for this challenge? (I've never entered one before!)

I'll be watching.

Ok, finally got my concept I think. Very quick and rough sketch.

Little junior here is beginning his long journey to reach the top of the imposing refrigerator to reach the mystic Cookie Jar.

03-03-2006, 07:19 PM
Hahah, good theme. Its got all the elements; danger, reward, suspense. Mystical cookies, yuuuum..

03-04-2006, 02:44 AM (

Some concept ideas for the little boy. I don't know if I want to go with a baby in diapers or a small child.

03-04-2006, 12:21 PM
Good luck for the challenge Michael !

03-04-2006, 12:24 PM
I like this point of view, from bottom to top. You show the challenge like a big step (and it is for the baby). Go ahead!

03-04-2006, 05:37 PM (

Still working on the character. I think I'm going with the baby idea.

03-04-2006, 06:57 PM
Cool, good luck!

03-04-2006, 07:04 PM
Yup yup,

Haha, I really love the idea :bounce:
The drawing in missing some perspective but we can definitly see how it will end up.

And definitly see the baby instead of the lil boy. It adds more suspense / emotion

03-04-2006, 07:33 PM
great idea Michael, and the baby sketch is perfect. look forward to more!

03-04-2006, 10:36 PM (

Ok, I've started the modeling. It's supposed to be more cartoonish than realistic.

03-05-2006, 01:17 AM (

An update to the babies head.

03-05-2006, 01:01 PM
Great start Miketche, i really like the concept

03-05-2006, 04:20 PM
Good progress Mike, that baby model is coming along nicely.

03-05-2006, 04:32 PM
Nice job modeling so far  , I like the idea.

03-06-2006, 05:16 AM (

Little Junior's body.

03-06-2006, 05:31 AM
ha, beautiful baby model Michael!! what a classic! nice exaggeration

03-06-2006, 03:19 PM
Coming along nicely.

03-07-2006, 07:37 AM (

Some small updates and tweeks to the model. Let me know if you see any glaring issues. Next I'll be texturing him.

03-07-2006, 07:48 AM
Looks like my last image got a little screwed up in the submission process. Well, it should still be good enough to see.

03-07-2006, 10:14 AM
He is just soooo very cute! It reminds me of those illlustrations and postcards they used to make in the fifties and sixties. Have a look at this site, especially in the food section, to see what I mean ;)

03-07-2006, 10:18 AM
Great concept... fat baby! How can you go wrong :D

If you wont see hos stomach dont bother but it might be a nice touch to drop his diaper down a bit and give him a belly button - just think that look suites this character more.

Good luck

03-07-2006, 12:41 PM
Great progress Miketche, i think that three small toes an a big toe would work better though. Just haveing three toes is almost animal like.

03-07-2006, 04:42 PM
Hey nice update Mike. I like the proportions, especially in profile he looks hilarious. I agree with Handlebar on the toes. Plus I find the ends of the fingers to be an odd shape. But all in all really good looking work.

03-07-2006, 04:52 PM
Believe it or not I just noticed the issue with his toes. They did look a little odd to me but I couldn't figure it out. I was thinking three finger so three toes, but he actually has four fingers. I'll fix that. Thanks

03-07-2006, 04:58 PM
monica.ta - Thanks, Cute cards. I did want him to look a little cartoony.

tilite - Ya, I debated if I should show his belly button, but I like the look of the diaper being pulled up almost to his arm pits.

03-07-2006, 08:16 PM
looking great michael..nice subtle exaggeration..if you want to change anything you could make his arms a bit flabbier. like it alot!

03-07-2006, 09:15 PM
rofl that baby is awesome  this is another wicked one keep it up.

03-08-2006, 01:11 AM
I like the modeling stuff, it's interesting, and enter in the fantasy world. I don't know, I'm almost sleeping now (sorry for that), but doesn't he look too much square-like in arms and legs? Maybe it's your intention, but maybe you can try more smoothed curves.

03-08-2006, 04:44 AM
tilite - Ya, I debated if I should show his belly button, but I like the look of the diaper being pulled up almost to his arm pits.

Yeah its still cool, I supose its the other extreme ;)

03-08-2006, 07:19 PM
So I submitted my turntable, and it seemed to create the movie successfully, but now I don't know where it is. What's the point of submitting a turntable if no one has access to it.

03-08-2006, 07:28 PM
The baby is very compact and nice. Very clean. Maybe it needs to get cuter though?

03-09-2006, 04:38 AM (

Texturing the baby. Pretty simple really. Using the Chanlum plug for the skin.

03-09-2006, 06:27 AM
Wow Mike, the baby looks great although a bit jaundice ... I know, it's the lighting ... heh ... Looking good!

03-09-2006, 08:32 AM
hehe, very cute

03-09-2006, 06:59 PM
i love the baby model, very cute.
concept has alot of potential. can't wait to see where this is going.

03-09-2006, 07:25 PM
Wow Mike, the baby looks great although a bit jaundice ... I know, it's the lighting ... heh ... Looking good! I tend to agree with this, you better feed him some vitamin D. :-) Seriously though, looking good.

03-09-2006, 07:50 PM
Thanks guys. I'll work on the skin a bit more. :wip:

03-09-2006, 11:07 PM
Nice baby model the head looks great one small critique though the big toe sticks out the farthest on your model instead of the second toe.

03-09-2006, 11:19 PM
Thanks Alt. but are you sure that's the way feet are. I know my image is more cartoony but in my research just now it looks like the 2nd toe is usually just shorter or about the same size as the big toe.

Although, I think will edit the feet just little bit.

03-09-2006, 11:22 PM
My big toe is the longest, does that make me a freak?

03-09-2006, 11:26 PM
My big toe is the longest, does that make me a freak?

Well... even if your big toe wasn't the longest.... :D

03-09-2006, 11:27 PM
Ouch! That cuts deep Mike. I thought we were friends ... ;)

03-10-2006, 01:47 AM (

An update to the texturing and a little bit with light set up for this render.

03-10-2006, 11:22 PM
My big toe is slightly longer too.

Looks good Mike.

03-11-2006, 06:25 AM (

Ah, I can put my arms down now.

03-11-2006, 11:28 AM
Thats a cheeky little pose Miketche. Looks great.

03-11-2006, 07:24 PM
very cute Michael!!

03-11-2006, 09:42 PM
the pose looks great, but from what i read in your concept, i was thinking more along the lines of the baby sitting down with his thumb in his mouth, thinking "now how the heck am i gonna get up there???"

great work so far, keep it up.

03-11-2006, 11:53 PM
This is not the pose that I will use in the final image. I was just testing out the rig.
But he will be doing more than just sitting on the ground with his thumb in his mouth. He's going to be beginning his journey!

03-12-2006, 12:04 AM (

Aaaahhh! It's so huge and epic!!!

03-12-2006, 09:25 AM
awsome fridge man.

03-12-2006, 07:03 PM
ha, great cartoon fridge! the kids drawings are cute.

03-12-2006, 07:19 PM
this is a funny concept :D cute baby.. and a nice huuuge fridge...

my guinea-pigs says.. this is exactly how a fridge should look like. and they should know, they sit next to it all day. and beg for food. :p

03-12-2006, 10:06 PM
Thanks guys.

I'm actually thinking of putting a guinea-pig (or hamster) in my scene. It's cage (among other things) will be used as a building block for junior's ladder to the top.

03-14-2006, 06:45 PM
Cool effect on that fridge. More!

03-14-2006, 07:26 PM
I'm working on a lot of small pieces right now. I'll post something as soon as I have something cool to show.

03-15-2006, 07:27 AM
Tis concept is one of my favourites and the models look nice, although i'm also concerned about those fingers...i think it would be nice to see little chubby segments...Just a thought... the rest is awesome. Keep it up.

03-21-2006, 01:30 PM
Nice fridge Miketche, i hope its full of beer

03-22-2006, 04:09 PM
Hello miketche, rely so so great work so far i have two notices though:

1- the skin color of the kid looks so light and pale i think adding more red to his cheeks will help a lot and adding same red to his knees and elbows too, try also to add at his abdomen a small hole and in his chest the tits.

2- i suggest you creat lot of poses for the character in one image (one above the boxes - one jumping - one on) and the last sitting thinking of new idea this will add lot of ideas in one image and give big story to it.

keep up the great work mate.

03-22-2006, 05:07 PM
Thanks FlaminGlow for the suggestions. I think I will work on the skin texture a bit more, but I don't think I want to add a belly button or nipples.

I also think I understand where you think I should go with the multiple kids in one image. I'll have to think about that.

03-28-2006, 10:43 PM
The fridge and baby came out really well Mike. I love the kids drawings. Those little details add a lot. Nice work.

I guess you are away working on the renderosity contest, see you back here in 2 weeks then?

03-28-2006, 11:10 PM
I guess you are away working on the renderosity contest, see you back here in 2 weeks then?

Pretty soon! So are you done with the King of all Frogs?

03-29-2006, 09:11 AM
are you done with the King of all Frogs?
mmm... another frog attack ;)

Excellent modelling until now Michael, I'll watching the next step on your work, looks very promising !

03-29-2006, 03:51 PM
Pretty soon! So are you done with the King of all Frogs? No I burned out trying to model a realistic frog, so I took a break. I need to get back to it soon, how is yours coming?

Are you doing the Frog too Julien?

04-06-2006, 04:46 AM (

Ok, I'm back with a small update. These are some building blocks that Little junior will use to build his ladder to the top. Sizes of some things may change. And I've got more to do.

04-09-2006, 09:30 PM
good to see you back Michael! and they look really nicely done, too! keep em coming mate!

04-10-2006, 05:10 AM (

Begining the modeling of the kitchen environment.

04-13-2006, 02:50 AM (

Another small update to the kitchen. Some modeling and texturing. Also this is not the final lighting of the scene. I plan on it being lit at night.

04-13-2006, 04:28 AM
Wow Mike, that looks really great. I love the perspective. Nice work!

One small note. Looks like the chair's legs are intersecting the floor.

04-13-2006, 04:30 AM
yes, you've done alot michael..looks really good. I like the camera angle...perfect for a little bubba in the scene!

04-13-2006, 01:18 PM
cool work and great concept
me personaly don' t like this door on the wall-too many sharp corners i think
anyway keep up the good work:)

04-15-2006, 11:27 AM
Great updates Miketche, i love the camera angle, looking forward to see how you handle the night lighting, keep up the great work.

04-15-2006, 07:45 PM (

The Hamster cage. Another building block for little junior to use.

I didn't pay much attention to the inside of the cage because it will be viewed from a low angle.

04-15-2006, 07:53 PM
lol that is one really cool Hamster.
You amaze me - You make such a great model, rig and texture him and don't even want to show him off.
I would be posting huge renders all over my thread lol.

He looks great though, kinda like he is desperate to get the heck away before it all comes crashing down.
Brilliant... :bounce:

04-15-2006, 07:59 PM
Thanks Womgoose, but the little hamster is not modeled very well. He only looks good from a distance.

Handlebar - Thanks. I love doing night lighting scenes.

Zazi - Hopefully the final lighting will help take some of the sharp edges out. We'll see.

Shakes - I really love your crazy creatures too.

3D_Explorer - Thanks. I've reworked the legs of the chair.

04-15-2006, 10:31 PM
hahahahaha, that hamster is killing me! Looks like he's gonna foall down on it's behind! He's so cute!!

great work miketche!!

04-16-2006, 02:40 AM (

It looks like little junior has found Dad's Laptop to help him climb to the top.

04-16-2006, 10:47 AM
maybe junior could also use a pack of 6 bottles of water to climp to the top. Would be fun to use some refractions and caustics  :wip:

04-16-2006, 02:25 PM
Nothingness - Thanks for the idea!

04-16-2006, 02:32 PM
You are starting to get a nice collection of props for this scene. I can't wait to see it all come together.

04-17-2006, 03:16 AM (

A precarious ladder begins to form.

I liked the idea of water bottles. Not sure how to implement them. I think this is as high as I want the ladder to go, you know, he is still begining his journey.

04-17-2006, 05:11 AM
what a tower... funny and well done..
the hamster is just a great addition... :bounce:
maybe you can put just one waterbottle one the chair, next to the bucket... so it looks like it the support the books?

04-17-2006, 05:14 AM
Looking great Mike. Precarious indeed!

04-17-2006, 09:22 AM
He he, you can really see why the hamster istrying to escape now! Maybe you could have a tiny amount of sawdust falling from the cage, that would add to the visual instability of the tower? Great piece though, can't wait to see the architect in the scene :p

04-18-2006, 04:57 AM (

OK, Little Junior has entered the scene.

04-18-2006, 01:08 PM
Looking great Miketche, i just clocked the hampster, lol, nice touch.

04-19-2006, 05:35 AM (

Playing around with a new angle. What do you think?

04-19-2006, 08:56 AM
I agree with new angle; but isn't enough yet!...

there is no need the full of your character be in image... i think the camera must be more close to your character !
keep going----> ... .. .

04-19-2006, 08:58 AM
I agree with new angle; but isn't enough yet!...

04-19-2006, 08:25 PM
Thanks Coochaki, I think I'm liking this new angle as well. But I don't know if I want to push it much farther than it is now. I'll see how things start to look as I develop the lighting.

04-19-2006, 09:22 PM
Whoa I'm getting such a strange feeling when I look at this.
It's kind of like vertigo but reversed lol.
You have done a really good job with the perspective and camera distortion.

EDIT: Hmm this might be a bit strange but I'm wondering what it would look like if the whole image was distorted as well.
Who said images need to be straight :)

04-19-2006, 09:46 PM
Hmm this might be a bit strange but I'm wondering what it would look like if the whole image was distorted as well.
Who said images need to be straight :)

Thanks Womgoose. What do you mean by that?

04-19-2006, 10:10 PM
I was thinking you could distort the image and fill the backing with the same colour gray as the site.
I did this test and well to be honest it was a rubbish idea lol.

04-19-2006, 10:13 PM
great idea!
I have a baby too, but they're doing different stuff.. different journeys.
good luck!

my journey (

04-20-2006, 03:04 AM
I like this a lot. I'm not sure where you are with the posing of the baby. To me it looks a little stiff or something. Can't put my finger on it. I like the angle too. Would be fun to see you go crazy with it too.

04-21-2006, 05:58 AM (

Starting to work out the lighting. I think this might be a bit too bright. Will work on it a bit more. Any thoughts?

04-21-2006, 11:50 AM
I think the lighting is fine, however it is darker towards the top of the image. If you cover the top of the image with your hand you see it could be in the day, whereas if you cover the bottom of the image it could be at night.. Maybe there needs to be a light origin, a small toy light/projector or something set on the floor, this would add to the twilight element but also allow for some tall ominous shadows bending over the scene.

Great work though

04-21-2006, 12:21 PM
Hey man i missed a lot what a great models man good luck in your next milestones.

04-21-2006, 08:21 PM
Lots of fun! Like the detail of the hamster haning out the top of its cage. Looking forward to seeing what else you may add. Good luck!

04-22-2006, 01:42 AM
It's looking fantastic. I like how the cookies jar is now starting to glow a bit to draw attention to it. I'm wondering if the power cord is hanging a little too straight over the chair. It seems to me that the weight of the plug shouldn't pull it that tight. I like this scene a real lot

04-22-2006, 02:59 AM (

Thanks everyone for the comments. Still working with the lightin and I moved the camera in a bit.

mdavid - That's a good point about the plug cord. I'll work on it.

04-22-2006, 05:47 AM
looks fantastic Micketche! great seeing the baby in there, and love the camera angle.
maybe you could make the shape of the cookie jar taller, so it's more obvious?

04-22-2006, 11:09 PM (

Well, I think my image in pretty much nearing completion.

Because my version of Cinema 4D does not have built in DOF I usually render my image in layers and fake it in Photoshop. This image will not have huge DOF, just enough to suggest depth and distance.

04-24-2006, 09:12 PM
great's a good way to go I think..I always make seperate renders- heaps more pshop control. nicely presented!

04-30-2006, 01:19 AM (

Ok, here it is. The Final Image.

Late one night, after Mom and Pop had gone to bed, little Junior decided he wanted some cookies. But the cookies had been placed high on the insurmountable refrigerator to escape his fat little fingers. So, finding what he could from the objects in his house, he bagan his journey to the top by building a clever ladder that would ascend him to his greatest desire.

04-30-2006, 05:50 AM
hey, congrats Michael!! looks fantastic mate! you sure are a fast worker. love all the little cute details like the hamsters head. the whole thing has a lovely visual balance to it.
well you can sit back in your armchair and watch us suffer!!

04-30-2006, 06:12 AM
Yeah, It's great. I like the angle of view, the idea, the lit. Good luck! Keep on!

04-30-2006, 06:12 AM
It's a wonderful, strong image. I like it a lot. Congratulations

04-30-2006, 06:18 AM
congrats... :bounce: to a job well done... :applause:

love the booktitels btw...

04-30-2006, 07:14 AM
Thanks everyone, for the support, crits, suggestions and all. I know there is still a month left and most people are still working on their images, some are just starting. But when your done your done, right?

04-30-2006, 12:33 PM
I don't was really present during this contest, but Michael  for your great image. I really like the scene, lol ! Congrats for your entry !

04-30-2006, 02:35 PM
This is very cool! great idea and very funny! Hope he gets his hands on those
cookies at the end!

04-30-2006, 04:03 PM
Congrats on finishing a very nice entry Michael  . I love the book by you :) and the expression on the hamster's face. You've also highlighted the cookies very nicely.

05-04-2006, 03:57 PM
So, I've just uploaded my final TIFF image to the FTP. I guess that means I'm completely done now. Good luck everyone in the coming weeks. I'll still be watching.

Also, no one ever told me why we needed to uploade a Turntable. I did, but where is it now?

It's part of the judging. As long as I know the turntables will go public when the challenge ends.

05-04-2006, 06:28 PM
Holy shmokes yer done! Where have a been? It looks great Mike, I love the whole Rube Goldbergian look to it. What is that top book called, 'Death from falling accidents'? heheh. Congratulations on a fine finish. Good luck with the judges. Cheers.

05-04-2006, 06:39 PM
congrats on the finish.
Must be kinda relief.

It looks great!

Good luck.

05-04-2006, 06:47 PM
My compliments to nice and stylish finish! I think his parents get some serious heart attack by watching this shot. Good luck

05-04-2006, 07:44 PM
Congratulations for finish that cool idea!

05-11-2006, 10:26 AM
Congrats on finnishing Miketche, great concept, and great render. Good luck.

05-11-2006, 10:59 AM
Very nice Michael. Good luck!

05-11-2006, 07:46 PM
Haaaahahaha this is a very nice scene, and a dangerous journey hehehe

06-02-2006, 05:21 PM
I've watched this thread with great interest and wish you all the luck in the world mate. Top work!

06-05-2006, 11:05 AM
no detail misses! Really very good work!

06-08-2006, 09:58 PM
I just upgraded my C4D to 9.5 with Advanced Render and Hair Modules. (I know, 10 might be announced next month. I'll probably get R10 when everyone else get R11.) and have been reworking this image with a few more nifty enhancements. Too bad the contest is already over.
