Yeah, your work is sweet.. and this painting is already looking nice
Sretno Stjepane!

03-06-2006, 10:48 AM
Well impressive but is it a real surprise:scream:. To crit a little I find there are too much dragons that makes too much complexity to the picture and not enough space to "breathe"; Maybe you can keep the mass impression with erasing to near ones and make more on background.

03-06-2006, 05:14 PM
absolutely impressive!! love the dragons!
amazing what u got in so little time! :applause:

i agree with the previous post though! more on the background and less in foreground!

03-06-2006, 05:40 PM
say no more:eek:
i'll stalking you..

03-06-2006, 05:46 PM
wow,that's a gorgeous image..well done!
the dragons sweeping down add an epic feeling to it...awesome work!

03-06-2006, 06:32 PM

the willowfolk pixie Ethelya was ordered to be tyrs guard..yeah Ethelya was smal in size but the spirit chanelling powers of the willowfolk were truly legendary and ethelya was more than up to the challenge..anyways just workin on it

03-06-2006, 09:05 PM
soooooo cuteeee!!! kawaii!! wheee cepo!!

03-06-2006, 09:14 PM
Very cute indeed :)

Very minor point though: the swords hangs a bit weird, I mean, the belt is attached below the gravetypoint of the sword, so it would topple over. It should be attached to the top instead of the bottom I think.

03-06-2006, 09:16 PM
Wooooooo! You have the killer tempo, updates are better and better :) Where this one will finsh?! In First place :D Keep working, friend! :)

03-06-2006, 09:20 PM
Ohh, nice really cute :D
I love it.
Now... go check my challenge thread, I could use your comments :D

03-06-2006, 10:46 PM

i dont know but this is in my winning list.keep rocking neb:thumbsup:

03-07-2006, 02:36 AM
So in brief, is your technique paint + blend?:D

03-07-2006, 03:42 AM
I thought the sketch was a lot more emotional. Perhaps you will add a second character back in at a later time?

03-07-2006, 05:43 AM
this is awesome man, i cant to close my mouth .....

03-07-2006, 05:56 AM

03-07-2006, 08:48 AM
One of my favorites, that´s for sure.
My only crit at this state would be that you shouldn´t go that much into details.
You incline to exaggerate contrasts which first of all is a good thing. But when you combine those worked out images into one you will loose the focus on the whole picture and i think you already have. Right now everything in this picture is important to look at.
Maybe it would be wise to make your mind up what´s most important in that picture, than second and so on. The most important areas then will get all the contrasts and vivid colors, the others...well, who cares about them anyway :D

I especially love the idea behind. Keep up the great work.

03-07-2006, 09:13 AM
today i discovered that i hate you.

03-07-2006, 09:58 AM
OMG! I never seen anyone work that fast... Neo :P
Anyway at this point it hopeless to comepeat with you. Dragons r just amazing... and there is so much adventire flow around this pic i dubt anyone can do better in this field.

Still to be in the contest next to this pic - now that something i can do :] And Im gonna :P

Keep it up

03-07-2006, 10:32 AM
Before I had even finished putting my idea down onto paper you had already blocked out your composition. Keep up the pace.

03-07-2006, 10:38 AM
I don't know, it is a nice image and all, I just don't get the feeling that the pixie is going on a journey, its just sitting there.

03-07-2006, 10:42 AM
My bad!!! Spoke too early, I only saw your latest update, seeing the whole thing makes me feel realy stupid. It looks amazing!! I'll go somewere and die now

03-07-2006, 10:58 AM

ik i was playin around with kal the elf girl..u see when it domes to determination she often surpasses tyr so i was fiddlin around with the idea of her standing

03-07-2006, 06:29 PM
whoaaa so many replies..arrgh i really hade doing the collective thank you but i really have to i gorr to get back to work comics is a hard working industry like any other, about crits thank you got some good advices and about everything looking to be of same importance i intend to do a serious experiment of working things out thru color..maybe it will work maybe it won time will tell but its a point well taken, about the pixies sword i have to find the original design and ill show it to clear it out , gtg ppl:love:

03-07-2006, 06:30 PM
I think I like her better sitting, it makes her look a bit more calm, in contrast to Tyr. Beautifull as always in any case.:D

03-07-2006, 06:32 PM
I think I prefer her standing :D They look more together and ready to leave, then when she is sat down.

Awsome work!

03-07-2006, 06:35 PM
i have no idea which i prefer, either way...calisto looks great in this image :D :applause:

03-07-2006, 06:38 PM
I'd like to see her standing in the full image, just to see how it effects the composition.

My gut reaction is that it' be better, giving more weight to the top left, and a more swooping motion of the eye down and through the center of the piece

03-07-2006, 06:47 PM
I like her standing as well. Who are we talking about?

03-07-2006, 06:47 PM
I think if she sitting , image should title " the jounrney not yet begin " but when she standing , it will be the journey begin!! heheheh just my opinion man!

03-07-2006, 07:11 PM
awesome !
I like it,lcongrats man!

03-07-2006, 07:29 PM
I like her standing for the same reasons that everyone else has mentioned... But when she's sitting she has long statuesque legs, and her body is a lot shorter when she's standing: She's lost about 10 years in age! But then, she is an elf... but I don't know the character that well, and you obviously do. So you'll have to choose some solution that makes he look her proper height and age (even though none of us will know! :) )

Looking good!

03-07-2006, 07:30 PM
I don't know why, but I prefer here sitting/laying down.

03-07-2006, 07:37 PM
Just to make this a lively discussion, I will take a stand for her sitting down...

it sets her farther apart from Tyr, as well literally as from a dramatic point of view. She really makes a different statement about the journey when she remains sitting until the last minute. I think I like that because opposed to Tyr's total commitment and enthousiasm this adds more depth and contrast to the scene. Makes you ask more questions (doesn't she trust him? Why not? She seen it all before?) and the more questions the better:).

03-07-2006, 07:38 PM
Hmm I like her standing better than the other one, but thats also because her pose in the first one is a bit half-upright. Maybe you could try one with her lying relaxed on the grass, arms behind her head and stuff. Make her lazy as a contrast to the other character, who is pointing and has a generally more active pose. (on the other hand, it would also turn the attention away from her which is maybe not what you're aiming for :) )

03-07-2006, 07:42 PM
i like the sitting one.

03-07-2006, 09:14 PM
Having That Girl On The Left Stand Is A Good Idea

Keep It Up Man

03-07-2006, 09:26 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1141766769_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1141766769_large.jpg)

ok so i went for now with the Kal standing but to keep the balance i inserted one of my favorite characters thewellis the orientated, Ae'terra's greatest(self proclaimed) cartographer and guide for the adventurers...

03-07-2006, 09:28 PM
me like the standing up pose :bounce: gives me the feeling that they really are about to begin the journey...

03-07-2006, 09:33 PM
Very good so far, we can have a nice glance of the final image, Keep it up Stiepan

03-07-2006, 09:35 PM
Funny looking guy, can we get a close-up? :bounce:

03-07-2006, 10:43 PM
Loving it, loving it, loving it!! :D
I dont mind the standing pose, I also liked her a lot when she was sitting. In fact, I think I prefered her when she was sitting, but this one is still as good. The character u added does indeed gives it a good balance!! Keep up! ;)

03-07-2006, 11:47 PM
me like the standing up pose :bounce: gives me the feeling that they really are about to begin the journey...

I agree, I was just thinking the same thing.

03-08-2006, 12:03 AM
In the relaxed Version, there was character difference between them noticeable. The Focus was on him, showing the direction where the journey is going and she was more easey going. I Liked that a bit more though.

Similar to this pic Skies of arcadia (http://www.gamecritics.com/feature/artgallery/skiesarcadia/art01.jpg)

But it still rocks for sure

03-08-2006, 12:38 AM
This just keeps getting better and better, I really dig the composition. I especially like the changes you made regarding the left side of the image, makes it much more dramatic, great going.

03-08-2006, 01:04 AM
wow man!

the worst in this, that this still not the final image!!!

love characters, and lil flying dragonz!

03-08-2006, 04:35 AM
already fabulous and its not yet completed

good going man

wish i had the speed

03-08-2006, 05:56 AM
Nice, so far dude! I would suggest giving the compo some air, but it is up to u, already amazing work!

03-08-2006, 06:40 AM
Ahhh...the girl is standing....but i must admit compo is great when she was sitting down but like what the guideline says....its story first, tech second.

Im loving this wip nebz.....keep it up

03-08-2006, 07:57 AM
...but it is up to u..
Just keep doing, what you do and keep the migthy power of Dragonflame buring in your heart :)

03-08-2006, 08:15 AM
personaly i think she is good standing up.. either way son.... o and about your reply on my thread.. I AM NOT A PAINTER USER.. photshop all the way son. what gave you that idea?

03-08-2006, 10:36 AM
I love the color in this! I was thinking about it and had to look again. The warms and cools, the saturation; the more I look the more I want to see.

03-08-2006, 11:36 AM
wow!!! great drawing. when finished, It will be beautiful.

03-08-2006, 12:13 PM

03-08-2006, 10:10 PM
hmmmm...did they point the finger at people in the times when faries and dragons and other stuff used to dwell (in theory)...what would the judges say :deal: cheeres :applause: jolly good show!!

03-08-2006, 10:29 PM
what res *width/height* are u working at right now bro?

03-08-2006, 11:30 PM

I must admit that I'm a 135 % jalouse of you for your drawing talent !

However, I find that the drawings however good do not really evoke the feeling of journey.

What about something about a baloon with a completely akward and really too diffucult perspective ? I thought about it myself, but I'm afraid it's beyond my abilities for the moment .....

03-08-2006, 11:40 PM
Haha, I didn't notice that your thread already had 22 pages .... I should have guessed so !

I still think that the scene needs a little more beginning of the journey feeling - perhaps a little more stuff around the main characters ? Some bags, suitcases or other stuff ? If they are going on a journey, they will need to bring some things with them ?

03-09-2006, 01:53 AM
Wow, you're progressing insanely fast. Keep it up, you're doing a great job so far.

03-09-2006, 02:06 AM
Oh, hope you'll get well soon

Did anyone told you how good you are? :)
If they forgot, I'll tell it again :)

Pixie is great :)
you made good perspective to the image.

I wondered... is there any way to throw more light at Pixie?
Just to show that she is in the centrum of all that.
Your image is already awesome, maybe just a hint of light or something else.... ?

BTW, nice green monster-man-bird.... whatever exactly it is :)

Take some tea, but please don't stop working ;)
See ya

03-09-2006, 03:07 AM
wow fantastic work so far.

your progress is amazing! -- and so quick too... wow.

i was just curious what kind of settings and brushes you use (and which program, for that matter) to get such a clean image with just the right amount of tonal and texture variation.

if this has been answered before, a simple link to the post would be greeeaaattt.

thanks a lot and good luck!!!

03-09-2006, 07:09 AM
oh noo i think we got a future winner:eek: !!

03-09-2006, 07:46 AM
I can't not comment on your work...

Every time I see the dragon on the ground, I almost get goosebumps... He looks so incredible pleased with himself, that I can't belive someone could actually capture that in a drawing/painting!! I love dragons, and that one is just up my alley!! The new addition, the cartographer, is also very nice! The second I saw him I knew he was some kind of navigator for this journey.

I'm just worried about something that has been mentioned earlier... The picture might get a big crowded... But then again, I don't think that it is at the moment... And if you look at some of the winners of previous challenges, many of them have a lot of stuff happening at the same time... *hint* you've a winner *hint*

Can't wait to see the final image, so I'll have something to put on my desktop...

03-09-2006, 09:25 AM
I'm never sure whether I want to cry or cheer when I take a look at your thread, Stjepan :p! Looks amazing. The colours and liveliness of the piece are already really outstanding. What can I add but keep up the great work

03-09-2006, 11:22 AM
Great work so far. It seams that you will be done with your picture next week if you continue like this. :)

The colors, idea, characters ... everything is top quality work. Good luck.

03-09-2006, 12:03 PM
uooww man, fantastic work!! certainly you´re one of the favourites!! :bounce:

03-09-2006, 12:12 PM
I am out of words really - I think it looks fantastic and looking at the dragons expression just totally makes me smile - it's such a happy sight.. *happy sigh*

03-09-2006, 12:30 PM

03-10-2006, 04:30 AM
Hey Neb,

Just wanted to say amazing work.
Your really inspire me to be a better artist. :wise:

I do have a question for you....

How did you learn to draw your characters the way you do? School, books, self taught?
If there is any books out there to help with this topic, I would appreciate any suggestions.

Also when your drawing your characters do you think about the anatomy from medical point of view (such as, "Oh I better get this latissumus dorsi right") or man his back muscles dont look right? I dont know whether to know the muscles by heart or not?

Suggestions for an aspiring artist would be helpful.

Thanks a bunch and cant wait for more source material for your tutorials.

03-10-2006, 10:27 AM
Wow, this is really coming together! These astonishing characters are definitely going places. Will you be adding a mode of transportation for them?

03-10-2006, 10:29 AM
Hey, The Cartographer looks very cool, like a mix between a monkey and a dragon. Nice face expression! :)

I like the whole idea too. I will be watching this, cheers :)

A I R yo damaa..so when are ur updates comin
papalatistudios im self taught basically al it really takes is some persistance and alot of work at first lie anyone else i sucked..i wasnt that big on talent but i was persistent. in school the informations i tried to obtain were really sparse but on the other hand i had some friends to compete with..one of them being the very active AIR here.. basically 3 of us worked our butts of to advance and it took us places
when i draw my characters i think about the logical approach to their anathomy..in the endd names arent all that important but how it all looks in the end. u really want to know the muscles, i really suggest dynamic series of burne hogarth..thet guy really understands the essence of human figure..trust me great help there
dash2k4 no mode of transportation

good luck,Nebezial:bounce:

03-12-2006, 10:16 AM
I like this one, really great characters.

One thing with the composition maybe. Couple of the dragons fly off camera, which leads the eye off camera as well. Think if you dropped those two, the image would read much better. Also i think one of the dragons maybe fly abit too close to the ground. I'm expecting it to hit the ground with its wings by accident. Apart from that, really cool stuff.

Don't know if this has been mentioned already. its a long thread :), and I didnt manage to read through all of it.

03-12-2006, 04:13 PM

03-12-2006, 04:37 PM
wow! Amazing wooot! This is coming along wonderfully. I adore the colours!!

03-12-2006, 04:43 PM
Thanks for replying Neb,

Yeah I went ahead and ordered a few of those Hogarth books,

Dynamic Figures
Dynamic Anatomy
Dynamic Hands

If you want to be a character designer you definitley have to understand anatomy. I realize now that it is more important to understand the way the muscles interact and flow rather than know every single muscle by heart.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

03-12-2006, 05:31 PM
dude, you are one turbo charged artist... :bounce::bounce:

loves everything in this masterpiece, esp the amount of details you put into it and still manages to layout the composition so nicely.

keep it up and looking forward for the rest of the progress.

This is beautiful!
WOW! I really like this one.

03-14-2006, 06:41 AM
Hi Nebezial, there is no way i can read all the posts in your thread, so excuse me if you already talked about what i´m going to ask.

Don´t ya think that lizzard fella with a map in the left corner is a bit to green? He´s kinda hard to be noticed in the pic... I´m not sure wether this is a prolem or a quality, since it wouldn´t be good if he ended up being the center of the atention for the scene, and the red part of his clothes is what makes we realize he is there. But i still had to force my eyes a little to understand him... Just asking if the rest of his clothing shouldn´t be some other color...

I don´t know... I´m just giving you a subject to think about. The picture is wonderfull, and you are definetelly on the right path, as you already know. See ya!

03-14-2006, 06:49 AM

Looks around, looks behind his shoulders, spins around, just like an ignorant nicca*:p

Nicca, U!!! LOL, u an artist right?? u create stuff right? nah just playin'.:D

Keep rockin the house! already 16,000 views and still counting!!!

03-14-2006, 06:56 AM

03-14-2006, 09:28 AM
no critics...just great and awesome work !

03-14-2006, 06:24 PM
Hi Stephan,

It's amazing to see how much you improved.

The right half is just remarkable. Gorgeous.

03-14-2006, 07:37 PM
Looking great, your technique and use of colour is close to perfect. BUT... all those dragons zooming out of the picture... they really do lead the eye away from the main scene. What would be awesome is to have the dragons swooping from the rear around to the right and then back again and "over" the viewer's head. Hell, it'll still beat mine whatever you do, but I just think the composition is slightly lacking.

03-15-2006, 08:10 AM
Hi Baron! I highly value you opinion and skills but I think that in this case leading the eye in a precise direction, left to right, outside the picture frame (with the gaze of characters and the movement of dragons) is fine, because it implies the subjects are going somewhere, maybe beyond the current scenario. Maybe it's the scenario itself that should make the eye loop inside the picture in a subtle way. The swirling idea is very cool though I don't think it fits the purpose of hinting a journey (or maybe it's me that don't visualize it well).

03-15-2006, 09:24 AM
That's smashing man, very nice work!

03-29-2006, 01:55 PM
I'm a real fan of your work ever since I saw those vampire pieces of yours. Really great stuff. This image is looking really good aswell, but if I may, there's one thing that jumps on me everytime I see the image. You'll probably fine tune it later, but imo the girl is standing out a bit too much on the image and that leave the Tyr dude a bit in the shadows. I think both sould be visualy important on the piece. Also, the green dude is a bit too green and easy to mistake with the vegetation behind him.

Apart from those two small points, the rest is really awsome. Love the dragons and the big dragon expression is just priceless too ;)

03-30-2006, 01:58 PM
c´mon Stjepan, where is the ups???? anxious for them!!

great job dude!

03-30-2006, 03:48 PM
wow this is turning out really beautiful!

04-01-2006, 03:58 AM
Can hear the wings flapping...that is just great.
To smooth the visual flow I would loose the cascade. I would maybe shorten the right tower and elevate the smallest peak to get it in line with: pointing fingter-small peak-tallest peak so the top of the vertical structures would create a nice elongated "u" on the upper part of your picture.
Excellent work.

04-01-2006, 07:51 PM
Wow!! wonderful!! Character and the layout design is very good  !! Great artwork!!!

04-01-2006, 09:16 PM

04-15-2006, 05:59 PM

04-15-2006, 06:31 PM

setting the mood now and goin all detail nuts

05-15-2006, 06:22 PM
damn that's lot of details, believably rendered, insane.

05-15-2006, 08:06 PM
weeee its sooo beautiful neb:love:

05-16-2006, 12:40 AM
You handled that right side of the painting perfectly....eye comes right back into the painting.
BEAUTIFUL circular composition....very DYMAMIC...
You should defenitly be proud of this painting...has all of the marks of a MASTER...GREAT JOB:applause:

05-16-2006, 05:16 AM
I love it, getting better and better! But, I think it's a bit too busy and noisy in the background, too contrasty in texture, hiding your wonderful dragons too much... see this little overpaint for exactly what I mean (hope you don't mind):

05-16-2006, 10:50 AM
Great work nebezial

Lovely composition and great characters....

I have to agree with Mr. Stahlberg with regards to the business and think simplifying the bg does help helps...

Fantastic work and look forward to seeing the final high resolution version... :)

05-16-2006, 11:38 AM
yo peopleee sorry i have been away for some time and unable to even write some devent replies.. it was as good as it was a bad thing i guess the good part is i really got me a ton of freelancing gigs and am knee deep in comics but the bad part was me being unable to go around the forums.. but on the bright side my army service is allmost done and it makes me all tingly..mmm the sweet exdtra timeee ...mwahahaha welll as you can see im wrapping this one up.. but im havin problems cause the more i do this pic the more i wanna do my comic.. tis a vicious circle i guess

Stahlberg daaaamn man ..it really is true that nothing helps the creative process like a fresh wiew.. thanx man i see what u mean:thumbsup:

05-16-2006, 12:36 PM
Looks very majestic! Best of Luck!

05-16-2006, 01:58 PM
Wow! I love the feel of this scene! Really nicely done! The one dragon that is furthest away at the top of the frame blends into the background. He could probably be removed or painted a bit darker.

05-23-2006, 03:42 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1148398951_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1148398951_large.jpg)

well a few details here and there and its done

05-23-2006, 03:49 PM

05-23-2006, 05:13 PM
hm well... in my silly and really not important opinion..

it was better the way without the flipping. now it seems less grandiose than before.

and i think you shoudn't reduce the details on the characters (like the dragon wings and on the woman)

also i would add a little more detail to the tail on the left side of the picture (the one in the foreground)
it's better when things in the background have less details than in the foreground

but this is only my... not really important opinion ^^

overall it's an extremely good picture

05-23-2006, 05:23 PM
Looking good! I was starting to worry you wouldn't finish it - You seemed to go quiet for aaaaaaaaages!

Keep going!... :bounce:

05-23-2006, 05:42 PM
I´m with Andreas about the flipping. I guess it might look cool to you, since you stared at it for hours and hours, but according to the reading direction (don´t know the proper word) the emphasis is now on the group, not on the departure of the dragons any more.
I agree with him about the details too.

Way to go, you´re almost done.

05-23-2006, 05:52 PM
Cool progress...the image is jist beautiful!

05-23-2006, 06:22 PM
Don't know why but it sure looks nice flipped this way. Overall really nice.

05-23-2006, 06:29 PM
 looks better this way and i think the piece is balance enough to carry the fliped one..
i think of this journey involving the group of dragons with the personae...
cant wait to see you finish... hehhe there is like 3 more days left... yeah ample time enough for touch ups and detailing... good luck....

05-23-2006, 06:35 PM
i dunno with flipping, i watch this from early sketches and now, flipped i'm feel a lil strange.

05-23-2006, 07:31 PM
both angles look fine in my opnion, but to be honest..im not too fond of the ddragon blowing fire. It's just kinda out of no where and distracts me from the ones flying away, but beautiful picture =)

05-24-2006, 10:50 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1148467808_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1148467808_large.jpg)

nearly done wooooohoooo

05-24-2006, 10:56 AM
Wow, you are sure close to the end. One thing though- it's really hard to see what the navigator is holding up as it blends in so much with the dragon behind him. Maybe darken that area a little so you can see the compass better?

05-25-2006, 10:50 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1148554246_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9814/9814_1148554246_large.jpg)

Tyr watched the skies with anxiety.ever since the rumors of tiamats awakening reached him he was adamant to finally meet face to face with one of the ancient gods of ravine. and so once again he dragged Kal Tenera, elven girl from the forest of beleran into an adventure. as usual auros went whereever tyr did. also the party was joined by a willowbow ethelya, and the salf proclaimet greatest cartographer of ae terra Thewellis the orientated, and so they waited to see the direction to where they would travel. tyr knew that all the dragons would journey to see the awakened divinity..but he allways wondered why the power odf tiamat had no effect on auros..who knows tyr thought maybe auros wasnt joking when he said he was one of the divine dragons..but the very next second image of auros dead drunk as usual flashed before his eyes...naah . anyways everyone the path is set before us, this journey begins

05-25-2006, 11:02 AM
Great image Stjepan. You will for sure be one of the top 6, if not the first one. I cant stop watching your picture.... it would be cool to have a poster of it on the wall. :)

very cool final man, best of luck to you nebez. :)

05-25-2006, 02:41 PM
great work! love the style and theme..

i think you could have taken the detail up a level...it seems that you got about mid-way then stopped a little...oh well were all busy...but the results looks fantastic none the less...

the thing i love about this piece the most are the translucent wings...youve had me hooked on that since the start...it really is some beautiful lighting...

anyway...great image...ive loved it since the start...

good luck..

05-25-2006, 04:09 PM

I love it! I think this is my favorite one, it looks awesome. I love how vibrant and saturated it is, the characters are great, the comp is great. There are already plenty of replies on this, but it definitely deserves it! This is the journey I'd take.
