Thanks, Squibbit. I'll be watching your entry for sure. I loved the piece you did in the wip section with you and the dragon.

Welcome and good luck to u dude!

Hey, JTD, good to see you in here... Here's a hug for good luck... ha ha ha,
but seriously,
have fun and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

goodluck jtd and have fun:)

Couple of concepts I thought about last night. First up...well, just check it out. A bunch of flies discovered that the lost city of Dung lies beyond this watery portal. And so the journey begins...

03 March 2006, 10:17 PM (

Next up. Dragons. I love Dragons and I thought it would be neat to have a dragon going on an adventure in an unconventional way - while riding a donkey. I wanted a whole dragon adventuring party. At first I had the donkey really small in scale. Then I stepped back and looked at the drawing and, it was not good. It looked more like the dragon' Here's concept number two.

03 March 2006, 10:24 PM (

And finally. I kind of had an idea about a couple that is about to take off on a hot air balloon adventure. I like the balloons that are not your standard light bulb shape but it was late and I wanted to get the point across. I don't know why but the man reminds me of a pirate. Things tend to end up being pirates or ninjas on this site so does that make the girl a ninja? Anyway, I also had an idea for a courtroom but that might be too philosophical to really represent the contest.

03 March 2006, 10:58 PM
Looks like I got there first! lol. Sorry... now I'm just being mean.

I'd like to see that courtroom scene though. Bring it on!

03 March 2006, 10:58 PM
Out of these concepts I like the air balloon idea, but I don't see the pirate/
ninja in the characters.. lol. Thanks for the feedback on my concept sketch.
I'm gonna think about it a little bit and perhaps jam on some ideas again..

mmm...aviation! Go air balloons!

I haven't started that one yet, paperclip, but what do you think of a Manga type character being put on trial by American comic type characters just for being different? It would be the start of a perilous journey for sure but it probably wouldn't translate well.

Thanks, beelow, walrus, sh@ke and adam for stopping by. Walrus, don't let this contest be an excuse not to work on your young medusa! Here's a hug back at ya.

03 March 2006, 02:25 AM
Wanted to stop by and see what you have going on. I really like the balloon concept and I think the couple looks really happy and excited to be going on that journey. Nice facial expressions:)

Lol, funny. I like the concept of the manga/american type characters though- maybe have them all standing at the city gates sending him off or something? Then you could have a big long walk for him, but- here's the thing- he'd be walking through scenery that could change from american type to manga type you can see how they're sending him back to his 'homeland'.

It's sad though. Just cause he's different!

Nice concepts man! Love the one with the dragon lol.. The others were good too though..
I'd love to see you develope them some more! :)

03 March 2006, 02:07 PM
Thanks Samanthie for your kind words. I like how the last one turned out too and it seemed to be the quickest one. The dragon one took forever to get going on because my hand wouldn't cooperate with my brain. I also had a whole bunch of other doodles that you didn't see (the power of layers in photoshop). Anyway, a couple of those doodles were eyeballs which I then grabbed and put into a separate file and finished sketching out the faces you see here. I need to work more on my characters so I'm going to follow up on this one.

Thanks for stopping by FrozZT, I'm definitely going to do a little more with dragons. And I really do like your carved stone drawing. It looks really solid.

And if anybody says boo I swear I'll develop the flies concept. Don't make me do it 'cause I will! I mean it! Don't do it! Don't!

03 March 2006, 11:11 PM
Haha, boo please do! I laughed alot when i saw you'r flies/toilet concept. I hope you'll bring some humour into this challenge with you'r entry, as I assume there will be alot of the standard "epic" themed entries.

Keep it up!

Here is another dragon. This scene should be fairly obvious. The dragon is flying off with team of horses and the covered wagon. And so the journey begins for the woman (cause the people in the wagon are gonna be eaten!).

I know what you're thinking. That covered wagon looks just like a photograph. But I swear that I used absolutely no references!

03 March 2006, 10:51 PM
had to check out your entry.. love that approach with the cookroaches/bugs at the toilet..

though reminded me on the new CG movie from Aardman Animations about a rat.. might get there some references..

03 March 2006, 02:56 PM
Thanks am7 and pschaffi for stopping by. Sounds like I need an update for the flies concept for fellow humorists! I agree, am7, that in a field of epics it wouldn't hurt to have a little bit of comedy. I recommend you check out Squibbit's catapult sketch! Had me laughing out loud. I can't wait to see Flushed Away, pschaffi. I love Wallace and Gromit and Aardman is doing some great stuff.

03 March 2006, 03:03 PM
yea they could be like a couple ready to get married , only the dude got suddenly
taken by de worm.

could have maybe lots of other wyrms in the background, having some sort of a big
exodus and this one wyrm just happens to swoop down low for a snack

could have the church in the bg too

ps. de wagon is a obvious photo so shuddup about it

03 March 2006, 05:45 PM
nice concepts!! good luck on the challenge mate!:D

03 March 2006, 05:58 PM

I wanted to look how you comes with your sketches. I find the dragons cool.
Good luck and have fun.

03 March 2006, 06:05 PM
You got me Squibbit. It's totally a photo. You think I'll be disqualified?:scream:

Thank you calisto and Ravena for stopping by. I did nothing over the weekend so I'll be spending the first part of this week producing more sketches for both the dragons concept and the flies concept. You two have some great art going on so here's some good luck back at you!

03 March 2006, 09:55 PM (

Another dragon concept using the dragon from my last update.

Sometimes the journey begins when there is no other choice...

03 March 2006, 10:15 PM (

I cleaned up some lines and I have something I want to pursue. It may look like this is the end of our little family here but it is only the beginning of a journey - a journey so great that children will still be talking about it long after the Paris and Nicky Hilton animated TV series!

03 March 2006, 10:27 PM (

Started filling in my values. Basically, I dodge and burn the base color in Photoshop. I usually burn with a soft brush and refine later but this time I chose a hard brush, which left a nice textured and striped effect. Technique I played with here is to burn perpendicular to the body and dodge parallel to the body. Settings are 25 for both dodge and burn. I'm still working on refining the composition as it gets a little busy on the left side and not so much on the right side. I do have a reason for that though which might be brought out with color. Anyway, only 60 days left! Keep going my friends.

03 March 2006, 10:48 PM (

Creating values for my other dragons with dodge and burn. It looks like some kind of marble texture when I step back and look at it which is cool because I can control the direction of the strokes. Basically this is a somewhat diffused overhead light source. Iíve started a hair test too and when I figure that out Iíll let you know.

Hi John,

Thank's for comments!
To answer at your questions, I work on Photoshop.
My compo in gray is make with several layers.
In background, one layer for sky and water, one layer for mountains, 4 or 5 layers for trees to give depth and one layer for foreground (approximately).
After, when i begin to make color, i take the layer "mountains" for example and i use the color balance. It's important color keep same value that gray.
And i make this for all layers create in gray at the beginning.
After i use Hue/saturation for adjust like i want.
For the shadows, i create a new layer, over all layers, i fill with a color the selection of shadows, i use filter multiply and i change opacity.
I hope you understand something in my explanation....
Good luck!

04 April 2006, 08:13 PM
I'm understanding...and learning. Thanks, CCCCC. Color has never been easy for me as I've just never done it or had any formal training. No sir, it's been pencil or pen for most of my life. But I'm getting the hang of photoshop so I'll be playing with adjustment layers and so forth.
