this chanllenge is great!!! I had this idea of doing kinda journey scene for about a year now but never push myself to do it. Thanks CGTALK for giving me this oppertunity.

02 February 2006, 11:49 PM (

quick concept sketch, mainly for posing of the charactor.

03 March 2006, 05:04 AM (

basic shape of princess

03 March 2006, 05:23 AM
Nice modeling!

03 March 2006, 06:51 AM
verry nice 'toony' modeling !
perhaps the head is too big, and shoulder have to be tweak a little ...
bute verry cute body mod :)

03 March 2006, 07:17 AM
Modeling looks good!
she's got a very stylized look!

03 March 2006, 07:56 AM
Nice body...good luck..

03 March 2006, 02:55 PM
wow... i got reply.... and that's more than just one reply... haven't seen that for months. thank you guys so much! (teared).

to Vedic kings,MichaelMotion and ELLDOY: thank you guys for your .. emm comment. i'm happy that you guys like the style. this is like my second cartoony charactor ever, usually i go realistic. anyway, it's great that you guys like it, there are more "cute" coming hope you guys will enjoy more

to schun : you abusolutly right, her head is big. in fact i also started a wip thread here ( i post most of the wip there and post the finished-or-almost-finished work as my milestone. in that thread i said i kinda want her to have a big head. but that's not certain yet. i might give her a bit more realistic proportion later.

again, thank you all for coming and go ahead enjoy more.

03 March 2006, 03:02 PM
sexy girl , i love her , post more close shots here , haha...just joking , keep it up nice modeling so far:thumbsup:

03 March 2006, 04:44 PM
Great start Jack!! I'll fallow your tread for sure. Keep up your good work

03 March 2006, 04:47 PM
i also started a wip thread here. i post most of the wip there and post the finished-or-almost-finished work as my milestone

Intresting, I didn't know you were allowed to do that.

Nice model though man, I like the head big, it adds to the style in my opinion.

03 March 2006, 05:05 PM
Intresting, I didn't know you were allowed to do that.

Nice model though man, I like the head big, it adds to the style in my opinion.

thanx crin. i forgot to do the link in my previous reply. the word "here" should link to wip section. is it true that having a wip thread and chanllege thread together is not allowed? if so then i need to remove that wip thread. who should i check to get this confirmed?

to Cygnus_X: I miss you guys so much T.T.... come to EA and we do 99999 x 999999.89 together. thanx for being here for me.

03 March 2006, 06:56 PM
very nice modelling! :D keep rocking!

03 March 2006, 08:59 PM
I think that they want to keep it all in one place -- from the faq (stickied 2d forum) they want everything hosted on their servers, and all of the extra material that you make available. For the 'community involvement' part they'll be looking strictly in these forums I'd hazzard.

Your're doing a good job of setting up a journey from the pov of 'going away from something' (instead of going to something) which is a little different, good stuff. Base character is looking great :)

03 March 2006, 09:07 PM
thank you Kary for that important information. I guess i will close that wip thread and put everything over here. it's a safe way after all. and i'm glad that you like the idea. in fact this image is stating a transition period, she runs away from one "journey" for another "journey". as i was talking to my friend early today, that i'm gonna start dressing her. it's a bit challenging since the dress need to show her as a princess and also a travellor as well.

anyway, again, thank you and thank kinomoto for your kindly reply and support.

03 March 2006, 05:59 AM
so the design of her dressing started. got couple of ideas of the overall looking, put them in 2d, but since only myself would understand what i draw, i won't put them as milestone. didn't do much mesh work, starting with 3 necklaces around her neck. here's just one of them.the other two will be way thinner and would be able to show the feeling of bouncing.

03 March 2006, 06:00 AM (

one of three necklaces around her neck

03 March 2006, 08:38 PM
Glad to be of some help :) The thick necklace looks good -- having 3 should make for a nice spot of detail.

it's a bit challenging since the dress need to show her as a princess and also a travellor as well.

Well the nice thing about princesses is that they aren't noted for their practicality ;)

03 March 2006, 02:40 AM (

so, there, she laughes. without hair. it's really freaky i guess.

i changed the idea of the necklace, a big one is enough, i think now it's pretty clear that she's a princess.

03 March 2006, 02:50 AM
This looks awesome, I have watched your 3d art grow the last couple years and I am must say, You amaze me every model. Keep it up and yu will be quite the contender.

03 March 2006, 03:39 AM
hey, great character and modelling Jack. the head is really distinctive and expressive, and you did a really great job on the body.look forward to more!

03 March 2006, 03:37 PM
To Lordrych: I can't believe someone actually followed my "growing" progress all this years. I must say I feel extremely flattered. There's more than just a simple thank-you i want to say, in fact, it's just too strong to let me express it. Meanwhile I feel letting you down for could not make a better and more enjoyable model. I swear I will die-trying to make this image as great as possible. Thank you very much Lordrych.

To shakes: Thank you pal. I checked and replied your journey post as well. keep it up and enjoy all.

03 March 2006, 06:08 AM (

I did say i won't do hair simulation this time couple of weeks ago, but I just can't stop trying to work on hair sim. Lucky this time i got the feeling right by first shot. so here, my LRP (Little Run-away Princess) finally get rid off her "budda" look.

03 March 2006, 02:56 PM
hey jack,

Great character, love the "Stylised" look of this character. your still early in it so keep ya head up and continue would like to see more. See you soon Jack! :arteest:

03 March 2006, 07:25 PM
looking good with hair- that is one great face!

03 March 2006, 11:37 AM
Nice hair!:)

The Journey Begins (
Spectacular 3D (

03 March 2006, 12:23 AM (

after being lazy for 5 days, her dress is done. I spent couple of days struggling with the idea of what kind of dress should i give it to her.

There are two kinds of run-away, the ones which are well planed, or the ones not. And for my case, it's the second one.

I want to make a little "stupid" princess. Running-away from the castle is the only thing in her mind. I want to make sure that her dress, her bag, and her whatever shows that she's not well prepared. that's why right now she doesn't looks like a travellor.

oh and, yah i starts to texture now. i plan to do a lot of ps work on the dress to fake the folding and all.

03 March 2006, 12:38 AM
Looking good. I know that it is still early, but the texturing on her eye kinda makes her look like she's got a bruiser there. I'm sure you'll fix that. Anyway, looking forward to your progress. :)

03 March 2006, 01:12 AM
I love the style! However the clothes look like they are made of paper and have no depth to them. I think you extrude an edge and move it inward it would give the illusion of depth.

03 March 2006, 04:10 PM
grest progress  like the new hair. I agree with the previous post for the eye and the depth of the cloth, that will improved a lot your dress if you put i little bit of thinkness to it. Btw i like a lot the detail you put on the center part. Keep up you good work :)

03 March 2006, 06:28 PM
TO Jedi-Juice :Good call on the eye-around texturing. I will for sure fix it tonight

TO Womball: I really thought today is like the worst monday ever in my life, untill you and Juice gave me all these great suggestions. I will keep working on the dress after i'm done with the facial texture. Again, thank you so much for your comment.

TO Cygnus_X: Eric thank you so much for lifting this post up again. I went to Indigo last thursday and bought a book which has like 500 abstruct patterns like the one you see on her skirt. they helps a lot and save me a lot of time from net-searching. and also thank you for confirming Juice and Womball's comment. I will put my hands on those as soon as possible.

03 March 2006, 05:12 AM (

i spend about 2 days finish the UVs, the plan is to pose her then finish the texuring.
so, now, she dances. this is going to be her final pose. I haven't finish weight mapping yet, also the hands looks a bit small. anyway, i'm planning to have her weighting + texturing done by this sunday.

03 March 2006, 06:17 AM
Nice character and modeling. However.... that eye is creaping me out man.

03 March 2006, 07:51 AM
yeah, you should really tweak her mimic, it's more creepy than joyful :]

03 March 2006, 02:02 PM
TO se7enthcin and uiron: ok. one of the important day of the progress: got a big NO NO for the eye. If i'm right, it's the open one that you guys talking about right? i was hoping that i would get away with texture later on. But, good call, good call. i will keep in mind and fix it as soon as possible.

Thank you two so much for the feed back.

03 March 2006, 02:20 PM

no, usually it isn't one feature that is wrong with the mimic. look for reference. no-one in these refs, for example, close only one eye; i also never saw people doing that when lauging or smiling:] when eyes close, not only lids work; cheeks lift up, as mouth is widening, brows go down.

03 March 2006, 03:17 PM
TO uiron:
thank you for your fast and valuable reply. I will find something from the 3rd, laughing baby image. I will modify the face after done with the weighting. sorry for the delay and please don't feel being ignored. Again, thank you so much

03 March 2006, 08:53 PM
The first things that grab my attention when looking at her pose are her hands finger and shoulders. You've already pointed out that her hands are too small but one thing I notice is that her fingers feel very "default". A subtle posing of her fingers would really give her pose more character.

As far as the shoulders are concerned I think that even tho she's just a young girl, as high up as she has her arms raised right now I feel her trapezius and her deltoids would be much more flexed than how they are right now, watch out especially for that back shoulder where it looks like the rotation joint is a bit off..

Beyond that your model is going great and I know that texture wise you wont let us down keep it up.

03 March 2006, 09:01 PM
Looking good dude! very nice modelling :)
I agree with the things Junerahe pointed out, and you might also want to move the corners of the mouth backwards, now it looks a bit too much like a 'flat triangle'
Keep up the good work! :)

03 March 2006, 10:31 PM (

i took a short 5 mins redo the concept. the background is some image from internet, not mine. i'm just using it for ref. i change the horizontal idea to vertial. there will be 4 animals in the scene, a racoon that jump and try to catch her little travel bag; a bird gets scared and fly off, a squirrel try to grab her another little bad, and a rabbit runs by. a small castle far away indicates she runs away. hope you like the whole feeling

 Interesting! ^0^i wanna see more~~~

>v<keep it up!

ps: >u<I really like this new journey project you are doing right now~ (

>V<BTW what a happy mood~ haha~~^口^:scream:

03 March 2006, 08:24 PM (

as Uiron suggested, i fixed the smile, it still not as good as i expect, again, i plan to fix it with texture.

the posing file somehow got corrupted, so i redid the pose, a bit different from the old one. i like the new one better, personally i think it has more action and more curve. right now still
working on weighting.

03 March 2006, 08:34 PM
With the eye untextured, she reminds me of one of those dolls that a younger brother got hold off and tortured.
That's not such a bad thing though (perhaps she finally escaped his evil doll dungeon ala Toy Story)

I for one will be slightly upset when you texture her into a 'real' girl (I can picture torn stitching, holes in shoes and somne rubber burns etc - would be pretty cool)

03 March 2006, 11:55 AM
better, better, but.. oh god, she's sleepy now or even.. drunk?:]

03 March 2006, 01:27 PM
Nice pose, but character could be better a bit...

good luck

03 March 2006, 04:30 PM
TO Womgoose: HEHE, thanx for your feed back, i will try not to make you upset....much :P
TO UIRON: ROFL, man i so love your sense of humor. stand the current version for a few more days and i promise she won't be drunk anymore :P

TO stavrevstefan: thank you stefan and, would you mind give me more direction of how to make it better in your opnion so i can jump outside of my own box?

03 March 2006, 03:29 PM
Great to see you progress Jack. I like a lot the sketch you mad and the new pose is even more dynamic  I think there is a little something about the left eye she look a bit tire, you should try to put both eye open the same way. keep it up :bounce:

03 March 2006, 07:34 AM
very very good:)

03 March 2006, 07:38 AM
lovely lady,
lovely pose..
maybe try to rotate some more with her highest foot (her right), or rotate her toes down, like she's curling them up, like all of us do when you're exited, right?

Good stuff..

03 March 2006, 03:29 PM
TO centavrus: thank you very much for your comment. i will drop by your entry sometime today. let's all keep up the good work. good luck to you.

TO MichaelMotion: look! it's the doggy man! lol. i saw your entry couple of weeks ago, i just love your concept and overall style so much! it just CUTE! my entry would also go for cartoony style but not as cartoony as you that's my plan. i will work on her posing more to show more happyness and excitment. Thank you for your dropping by and your comment!

TO Cygnus-X: i was working on her yesterday.without 5-mins-save.then power glith, all computer rebooted.lost what i did. that's just.whack. yes i was doing nothing new, just a little bit tweaking the pose, lost old projection so i created another one. i'm moving this weekend and then need some time to set up my new apt next week then there's easter break gf's planning to go to toronto for a trip. i don't know how much time i can get for myself in april >< that's just sad. but i will try to keep it up.

04 April 2006, 02:02 AM (

finally, back from...other things in life. i guess the time is really ticking now. i finished texturing the head tonight and probably will do a simple touch on the body skin, since they won't show much, before bed time. Anyway the idea is to finish 3d elements by the end of april.

for those who made comments on her freaky eyes and wierd facial expression, i hope you like the current update.

p.s anyone welcomes me back? :P

04 April 2006, 02:17 AM
Welcome back! This looks much better! The eyes are still a bit dark, they could be a bit brighter I think. The teeth are really bright! They could be closer to the teeth in brightness.

04 April 2006, 07:31 AM
i think it wiil be good

04 April 2006, 12:17 PM
JackZhang, nice idea and nique very different from what i saw here, nice model though the materials still not so good for the metals, but face of character is so great no critiques.

04 April 2006, 01:27 PM
TO WOMBALL: Thank you buddy for your welcome. it's nice to be back. i will light up the eyeballs tonight. the teeth is constant white with dirt map shader. that's why it's so bright. eyeballs has enviromental reflection on it. i used a night HDRI. i will change it to a day light one so it can be brighter.

TO sky_fox and flaminglow: thank you two for your nicely comments. those comments give me strength. Thank you.

i'm gonna redo the cloth mesh tonight. i had some idea during the last month. i think it would be better than the old version. let's see.

05 May 2006, 03:43 AM (

I guess it's pretty hard to put yourself back on the wheel after a long break, yet I finally manage to get it done. All those motivation came back in the recent day or two and, here we go, more LRP.

I can't remember how many dress styles i did or tried for her. Come to think of it, the dress was what slowed me down. i did not dressed her in the concept because i couldn't get a clear image in my head of what i really want to put on her; i spend longer time on dressing mesh due to lacking of concept...

But all these matters not now. I got her dressing-concept-mesh done. I don't know about you guys, but i like it. it's not complete yet, but it makes me want to work on it more, rather than delete everything that i did in 3 hrs and say "i just wasted another night".

05 May 2006, 04:01 AM
Hey Jack, nice pose! Very, very expressive! Glad you are back. I think you've done a fantastic job with the dress and her blouse. Maybe a little more shadow under the trim of her skirt?? Would definitely not "delete the whole thing" this is really exceptionally good work. Also like the way you have splayed her hands, continuing motion in her arms. She's a really cute model...I think she looks great! Hope to see more! (Oh, and sheez, Nancy in your portfolio is hot!)

05 May 2006, 07:19 PM (

i downloaded xsi try-out at work today and worked a bit on her accessories.

Unlike the cloth, I had the ideas of what i want to do with her bags from day one. Now here comes the part that i really like about my concept: I don't want to make a "mature" journey-begins. Meaning unlike most of the regular travellers who knows what they are doing and having everything prepared, our little princess has an awful preparation. All her bags will be compratively small, and most of what's in the bags are nothing travel-related.

I find the new elements make the image more alive. hope you like it as well.

05 May 2006, 05:38 AM
I love the feeling of soft cloth u have on her dress.. it almost looks like silk. I love ur concept of bad preparation. Her face looks great although i feel teh upper lip's volume should be spread out more because the middle of the upper lip doesnt look like its stretching along with the smile. Beyond that I think everything looks great. Sorry its so brief im pissed off cause I had to write this twice because of GCTalk Maintenance.... keep posting jack:thumbsup:

05 May 2006, 08:02 AM
She looks pretty nice and sexy , waiting for more!

05 May 2006, 08:50 AM
Hi Jack! Very nice and fresh character you´ve got here. And love your "easy feel free" concept. One point might be her upper teeth - looks like something stright what is holding her smile shape :D But that is just small point. Keep up good woork! Good luck

05 May 2006, 03:52 PM (

I brought LRP scene to work, but forgot to take the textures with me :P so here's a mesh render. I found little simple details such as the tie between the little bag and her belts makes the image much richer and alive. she's getter cuter and happier.

i'm gonna finish meshing her and her stuff today then start texturing her tomorrow.

05 May 2006, 04:29 PM
TO Oceanbluesky: more shadows(or harder shadows). Got it! Thanx bro!
TO Junerahe : Good call bro! you always there watching the my corners. that can be done easily with uv map, i will do it tonight. btw thanx for pulling my thread up.
TO Climax: thank you for coming and your encouragement :).
TO Oweron: again, the lip/smile. i sure need to do something about it. thanx Oweron. btw, your render tree of the dragon is just...... (tears in my big blinking eyes)... awsome.

05 May 2006, 08:13 PM (

did some folds on her shoes, some little thing on the glove. a little bunny on the bag. the most important thing, she throws things now.

there's gonna be a teddy bear and a crown in her "throwing-bag". not that she doesn't want what's in the bag, it's just that she's like super happy about her run-away so she forgets about anything else.

05 May 2006, 08:42 PM
Hey Jack, really like the addition of these props they capture the movement and personality of your character...really wonderful. The bend in her right knee, just behind her kneecap, seems a bit rubbery, perhaps you are already planning to take care of that by painting weights for your rig. Sorry can't suggest any other positive crits. Great work! Looking for more!

05 May 2006, 04:15 AM (

omg, she throw her teddy away! T.T that's just...wrong!

basiclly, now everything that belongs to her are done. I jump back to her dress, adding more details so she looks more like a real princess.

about her teeth, lips texture, and shadows under skirt, i will correct them during the texturing process. her right knee is fixed (or i assume it feels better now :P).

hope you enjoy it for now. more coming tomorrow.

05 May 2006, 04:45 AM
I do enjoy it, thank you.

Great form, this one is refreshing.

My only C&C's are the crown, I would make it stand out a little more, like being lofted in the air.

Oh and she could be throwing some of her clothes off :)

See ya soon!

05 May 2006, 07:52 AM
Hey Jack, like the new details...the teddy bear, creases on her gloves, and straps across her front blouse. Love to watch works like this evolve. Looking forward to seeing more! Excellent inspiring work thus far!

05 May 2006, 03:15 PM (

a bit more details on the shirt and skirt give a bit more feeling on the charactor. So now, my LRP is finally done in terms of modeling. Big milestone today.

starts texturing.

05 May 2006, 08:39 PM (

i know i shouldn't do like update 5 times a day but, man i'm just so loving what i just got.

sharing with all of you!

05 May 2006, 09:22 PM
Big improvement! The folds on her skirt are truly impressive. How 'bout a wire? :)

Keep it up.

05 May 2006, 09:34 PM (

as Jedi-Juice required, here posting a wire with the newest render. lace on her skirt is done.

05 May 2006, 04:44 AM (

as one of my colleague suggested, I touched her hair a bit to give it more flying feeling.

and more texture. the plan is to finish her texture tomorrow; do animals mesh on monday 8th; texturing animals on tuesday 9th; set up simple mesh for the enviroment on 10th and, start matte painting on 11th and try to finish everything around 20th.

05 May 2006, 05:26 AM
What's up Jack!! You rock!! Hahahah! You know who I am?!? You should! I'm your biggest fear! ;)

Seriously, your work is AWSOME! I'm loving it! (Just like the clown)

I can't wait to see the animals! Keep the work on!

05 May 2006, 10:21 PM (

So most of the mesh are textured with a few small parts left. feel like uploading a image before dinner.

i will redo her crown after dinner, found a nice ref, plus add a bit more texturing detail.

p.s I like her teddy so much ><!

05 May 2006, 11:07 PM
She's really full of life :D. Great model

05 May 2006, 03:40 AM (

LRP texturing goes with the plan, it is now completed. i might add a bit this-and-that later if i catch more feeling.

animal modeling tomorrow.

05 May 2006, 03:44 AM
Wow! Jack you are really coming along with this quite well! Excellent shading. Especially like the wrinkles on her boots. There's so much motion I can't wait to see her in a scene. Wonderful work.

Good luck!

05 May 2006, 03:46 PM
sorry for not replying ppl's comment. i should do it now。

TO rasamaya: good suggestion on "throwing". i'm remaking the crown with better details. once the animals are done i will find a better position for the crown to create better thrown feeling. Thank you for your suggestion.

TO oceanbluesky: pal, you've been in my post for couple of time. Thank you, always, for supporting me (and not letting my thread sunk to far :P). Thank you man, won't let you down.

TO jedi-juice: hope you like the wire, specially the folds on the skirts and the boots. I didn't bother zbrushing them so i use the old way.

TO orph3on: lol. you really supprised me. never thought you would be here. I will deal with you at work :P

TO 3dRaven: Thank you for coming pal. i'm glad you like the model. and mark my words, you will enjoy more :P

05 May 2006, 08:58 PM
missed quite a few updates here, sorry, but you've done alot of nice work! love all the little detail you've added like the stuff in the bags- very vibrant character, and her texturing looks great! nice choice of colours.

05 May 2006, 08:51 PM (

nothing much to say, here's a quick update.
working on the background right now.

05 May 2006, 12:52 AM
Haven't been through for a bit -- character has turned out really well. Good energy, and details in the right spots. Will be exciting to see that integrate with the backdrop, the image sampler makes it look like there will be plenty to see there as well :)

05 May 2006, 01:34 AM (

posting one with the girl.

05 May 2006, 04:14 PM (

basiclly i want to create visual layers by setting up different color theme. the work is slowly getting to what i imagined in the concept.

i need more right image source.

05 May 2006, 02:54 AM (

the problem of with the one i did before is that everything is bright, everything is warm. almost too bright to keep my LRP in focus.

so i did another version, kinda foggy and gloomy one. not sure which one is good now. need some advice here.

05 May 2006, 03:26 AM
here u are!

05 May 2006, 04:00 AM
Looking very good. The gloomier one is much better.

A suggestion; you need to match the foreground area with warmer colours to match back your 3d girl. Leave the background cold and gloomy; this will lend contrast and emphasis to your theme. Happy colours in the foreground that blend into the cold clammy background, a metaphor for leaving something bad for something better.

My apocalyptical journey:

05 May 2006, 04:43 AM
this last one you posted is really great! best one for sure.

05 May 2006, 01:01 PM
TO Junerahe: Thanks bro, for your support and that great visual ref. thanks for keeping me on track.

TO vincent1: Good call vincent, good call. i had what you said in mind however by the time you repiled it i haven't got a final picture in my head yet. It's really great what you described, i will try to imagine it and actually put it on paper. Thank you.

TO Shakes: hey shake~, glad you like it. and you better hurry up on your bg now coz we are running out of time! (grin)

05 May 2006, 01:42 PM
Hey Jack! Looking forward to seeing more work on the background -- your second one looks great (as did the first, but, I agree with you its warm colors did not allow you to show off you cool fun character quite as much). Good luck!

05 May 2006, 01:57 PM
Great job Jack i really like that last version of the background  2 week left you can make it keep it up. I can't wait to see the final result.:bounce:

05 May 2006, 02:42 AM (

it's really getting fun. I guess i will do a another matte painting after the challenge.

the big pieces are almost all in the right place now. just need to touch a lot of small areas so they are not that recognizable from the originals.

today is 15th. planning to have another 4 days on it then go back to the animals.

hope you guys like it.

05 May 2006, 02:52 AM
coool!! the details are fantastic - scene look greate!
technice is very good - greate - topology,etc.. greate.
composition - greate
character- greate - spontanic, express - fantastic!!
you did very good job!! :)

05 May 2006, 06:16 AM
I knew this would be really good! Can't wait to see it entirely done, which seems like it will be soon for you!

05 May 2006, 01:02 PM
TO oceanbluesky: seems like everyone likes the second version, so do I. hope you enjoy today's version, which didn't change much coz i was sick so couldn't keep my mind clear yesterday night.

TO cygnus-x: i guess i will take phil's job at bigbang one day muahahaha. :P

TO staszek: Thank you for coming and welcome. that's a lot of possitive feedback from you. i won't let you down *eye blinking*

TO Womball: hey man, haven't seen you for a while. our time comes to the end and seems you still got some amount of work to do. keep yourself up and let's kick the deadline together.

05 May 2006, 01:34 PM
lovely work -the last one is even better.the new trees on the sides you added really complete it .clever stuff!

05 May 2006, 04:15 AM (

putting the castle in

05 May 2006, 05:12 AM
Oh you image is so stuning I love the colors and the overall feel! realy a good piece of art! One thing I have much trouble doing that you solved awesomely is the framing of the work! In your image, nothing is out of place, everything sems to be natural! realy good! =)

05 May 2006, 08:24 AM
Looks great. What a nice scene and overall great looking picture. One question? Are the background buildings in 2D?

Keep up like this,great stuff.

05 May 2006, 01:22 PM
TO Scied: wow, that's a lot of compliment. I really appreciate that. still have 10 days and a lot of works left, i need to keep my feet on the ground. Glad you like it and hope you enjoy more from the final.

TO Glaust: hi, welcome to the community. Yes, the background, including buildings are all in 2D. i did them with matte painting.

05 May 2006, 02:13 PM (

i did a quick test on light ray during my coffee break at work. basiclly put some orange light on the road and the grass to warm the front image, and some light ray plus lens flare.

this version is not confirmed yet. it's still in its light testing period. I just want to try bunch of methods today to get the right feeling so tonight i can spend less time on thinking about how should i do to achive what i want.

05 May 2006, 05:11 PM (

one of my old buddy pointed out that there's not enough light rays. he suggested me to do a volumic light in xsi and composit in photoshop.

i gave it a try but wasn't good enough. so i painted more rays by hand.

the image now is much more warmer and happier. what do you think?

05 May 2006, 05:20 PM
I think it looks really great! I really am looking forward to the high resolution version!

05 May 2006, 02:31 AM (

here's some details of the background. These four sections are from the actual work, which has a printing size of 1536 x 2048.

05 May 2006, 04:00 AM (

working on both light ray and shadow of the girl now for the printing size

05 May 2006, 08:02 AM
im very imprest of your work - looks amazing

05 May 2006, 11:23 AM
looking great- thanks for showng the matt painting details- interesting stuff.

05 May 2006, 04:00 PM (

i put some orange light on the left tree, try to make it feels closer to the LRP. again, make the image warmer.

plus made the space between the two hils a bit more blue so the color gets richer.

05 May 2006, 07:14 PM
That is a very nice image you got there. However, i do have some minor crits ;). Biggest thing would be the lighting on the girl - if you compare it to the lighting of, say, that tree on the right, you notice she lacks a hint of deeper shadow on the left side. She would 'sit' better in there with some more shadow. Also, you could nudge her up a tiny bit - IMHO the composition would be a bit improved.
Now for the matte, you could have a nice 'hotspots' where the 'god rays' hit the ground, foliage etc. Obviously, you gotta be careful not to drag the attention away from the girl, but it may be a nice touch, if subtly done. I have the foreground in mind, i see there are some such nice places in the middle ground ;). But speaking of middle ground, the lower left one-third of the image does not really read that well, at least at that size - it's bit confusing, what really is happening there?.

Still, i like the image very much, lot's of fun it is.

05 May 2006, 08:46 PM (

i was planning to finish the bg in 2 days then do the animals, untill azazel made some great comment on the lighting. i'm going to put the background on hold for now, waiting for azazel's further instructions on the lighting. meanwhile i am starting the animals.

here's the animal concept. all animals will be done in low poly. not sure if i will use hair simulations on them yet.

05 May 2006, 09:23 PM
Sorry for mixing things up. ;). I'll try to make myself clear this time ;).

What i wanted to say is that left part of the middle ground, the part between the tree and the foreground grass is ... confusing. I can't really tell what is going on there. Is it grassy area ? Maybe, but then there are some angular shapes. That whole part of the image could probably be simplier without any harm. I let myself do a little and messy paintover, including the part about the girl as well... sorry about the quality, i did it with a mouse ;) (didn't have my wacom at hand).

05 May 2006, 09:35 PM
I would have to disagree here azazel. Simplifying the part you highlighted (rocks) would sorta break the balance of the image. The rocks are in oposition with the castle and they fill the bottom left space pretty well. IMO having rounder rocks would be more eye-candy than these quite bulky ones.

The background layer with the mountains (?) is not visible enough IMO. We can only distinguish three circular shapes in the center which are actually the sky it seems. A bit more contrast there would do the image some good I think.

Just my 2 cents.

Besides the above crits it's a very nice image and mood you came up with, I really like the pose and facial expression of the lil girl.

Waiting for them animals to come! :)

05 May 2006, 09:55 PM
To some extent you are right - i just made that part a solid color, and that is indeed not right. It needs detail, but the kind of detail that is recognise-able. If there are to be rocks, they shoud read more clearly as rocks - maybe some shading, or more rocky texture ? I looked few posts back, and that particular area looks bit like distant mountain slopes in that background sketch-collage post (that one:
They retained some of the shape and texture, that's why i say it's bit confusing ;).

05 May 2006, 10:10 PM
go Jack! good to see we're all pushing that deadline! the animals look really good designs.

05 May 2006, 10:24 PM
TO staszek & Shakes: Thank you two for dropping by and giving me more encouragement. Good luck to both of you in the challenge.

TO Mcfly: hey Mc, thanks for coming here. It's kinda late for me to change the rock, although i would agree with you about the round shape. I will think about mountains on my way home and see what i can do about it tonight or later. That's some nice 2 cents you passed to me. Thank you.

TO azazek: love you love you love you love you... hehe. joking. I've been looking for crits for days till you step in. great timing. I now understand your confusion about the gress. the one version you linked is almost at the begining of the bg work, which i gave up. However it's still a useful comment. I checked the area that you mentioned, the connection between the rock and the grass, it is NOT blending well. i put on my fix list and will do it as soon as i finish the animals.

The LRP, i haven't touch her yet, therefore the shadows on her go wrong. That one is bewared, but thank you for mentioning. plus your quick shadow fix gives me a visual direction of how i should do it. It helps a lot since lighting is not my major.

Again, thank you all for giving me strength and kicking my butt to make me go higher.

05 May 2006, 04:45 AM (

beaver is done. low tran with 1 sub d. didn't get time to try hair on it. will do tomorrow.

05 May 2006, 09:57 AM
what a charming little beaver... :bounce: and your image is just great, really nice feeling to it...

05 May 2006, 03:39 PM
ha ha ha.... i forgot to make his ears.... ha....... ha....silly me...

05 May 2006, 09:34 PM
Good looking beaver indeed. :D

You know what? I didn't even notice it does not have ears!
It looks cute already, who needs ears with a cute face like this? :)

Good luck with the modelling of the other animals.

ps: I understand it's too late for me to comment on the rocks but I got into the challenge recently... Silly me, there are so much good stuff here and there!

05 May 2006, 09:44 PM
Vcute beaver..doesn't need ears!

05 May 2006, 12:40 AM (

posed the beaver this morning. have been working on the shader for now.

05 May 2006, 01:30 AM (

texture and shader testing

05 May 2006, 02:00 AM (

rough idea of where the beaver is. of course blending, lighting and shadowing all need
futher work.

05 May 2006, 02:38 AM
So is the beaver some sort of Jimminy Cricket? He seems afraid of her outburst.

05 May 2006, 10:52 PM (

raccoon is done. squirrel and bird left. they should be complete tonight.

05 May 2006, 10:57 PM
great critters jack-very nice designs. one thing I was thinking- do you really need them? It's a fabulous image with just the girl, and my first impression is the animals look a little out of style with the rest, and add clutter to it.
just a could really call it finished with just the girl, I would's beautiful.

05 May 2006, 11:19 PM
good call shakes. i totally agree with the "out of style" comment.i've been having conflict ever since the mesh of the beaver was done. i'm gonna finish the models tonight, if i find a better way to texture them and making them fit the image, then they will be in the final, or else i will keep them out of the image.

05 May 2006, 11:24 PM
cool-nice to have your finished piece as backup..happy tinkering!

05 May 2006, 01:10 AM (

i was planning to have 3 raccoons, stands on top of each other. yet that takes more times to weight them so i decide to go with just one.

05 May 2006, 01:58 AM (

here's the rough idea of where i want to place the raccoon

05 May 2006, 01:48 AM (

it is a stupid, funny looking bird. i know it might not or even for sure not fitting the rest of the image but i just can't keep myself away from making it funny. will it be ok for the image? we shall see.

05 May 2006, 01:48 AM
I like it better than the beaver. Not sure where it would go, on her head?

05 May 2006, 02:43 AM (

posed the bird, really easy step. parenting all parts to bones, no enveloping at all.

here's this getting-scared bird.

05 May 2006, 02:53 AM
He's composed of different parts? Rather than one mesh?

05 May 2006, 02:55 AM (

here is where the bird goes. i scale the beaver a bit smaller, re-place it "behind" the LRP. one more squirrel to go.

05 May 2006, 02:59 AM
you're a quick worker, and good character designer! looking forward toseeing how they look in the scene coloured.

05 May 2006, 03:03 AM
TO womball: hi wom! thank you for visiting me a lot lately, specially two times tonight. (my big blinking eyes full of water T.T). I hope the last update answers your question of where the bird goes. to answer your second question, yes the bird was basiclly done with modifie spheres(mainly) and cubes. i have about, let's say around 50 spheres and 10 cubes on that bird, it's easier to pose or to animation a simple object, in this case, the bird, with just parenting to the bones. took me 2 mins to pose this one without editing weight. feels pretty good :P

To shakes: hey shakes my buddy! i just checked your work today looks pretty good and you still have sometime so keep yourself tight. let's not talking about texturing those animals for ....tonight or even tomorrow...such a pain in the butt to make them fit into the image. i will get the squirrel done tonight or tomorrow...

05 May 2006, 05:44 AM
Thanks for answering! I like the new update too! Just watch where you place the beaver (um I didn't mean that in a "dirty" sense). You have quite an impressive piece so its great watching it develop! Plus I'm doing lots of rendering so I have some free time now.
Your character sounds like he would be great for animation. Do you have images of his rig? I'm going to start learning XSI after this.

Btw do you work for EA games?

05 May 2006, 03:52 PM
TO womball: i'm glad you like the last update and surely glad that you noticed what the beaver was doing :P. that's a little easter-egg i put in the image, although it's really obvious. all animal charactors were designed and modeled for rigging and i will probably use them as a set to make an animation series with my friends. to answer your last question, yes i am currently working for EA games at montreal.

05 May 2006, 05:13 PM
Hehehe, so cool Jack, the best character for me it´s the owl, sooooo great

05 May 2006, 01:25 AM (

so far all my animals are done. last animal, the squirrel, is trying to grab LRP's only bread while swing up and down with LRP's jump.

05 May 2006, 02:13 AM (

this is the color theme of animals with LRP. the aimals are suppose to create a focus spot with LRP. hopefully they are doing the right job in terms of modeling and compositing.

05 May 2006, 02:22 AM
The two bottom animals are too close in color to each other. They are also the same tone as the girl is. So I would suggest changing the colors and tones of the 2 animals to draw more attention to her colorful dress. The beaver I would make brown or orange (different tone than the girl though), and the racoon grey or bluish grey.

Btw have you seen my entry? I'm in the final rendering stage. Its taking so long!

05 May 2006, 03:18 AM (

one of my friend suggested me about the perspective of the charactors so I change the camera a bit. it goes lower than the old one so now LRP faces higher, looks happier imo.

05 May 2006, 03:45 AM
that new angle is better Jack- but seriously, I think the image looks better without the animals.
it's a lovely happy focused image with the girl on her own...anyway, that's just my call!
good luck with whatever you decide.

05 May 2006, 07:57 AM
sorry,shifu,=0=kinda busy these days, i missed a lot updates here@^@

 the picture lookes great! i love these lately updates~

>u<like those little animals so much~

Keep it up!~\(>0<)/
I keep my eyes focused on the picture, and noticed something
the animals are placed at the four corners around the girl, my favorite part is when i look at the picture, their movements all lead my sight focus on the main character. but the four little animals' positions seemed even from the character, very balanced. my little suggestion is that if the animals could be placed more randomly, maybe it will make the scene more interesting.<--->u<only a little suggestion-3-

:wavey: anyway, i love this picture very much~ look forward for the final outcome. shifu+u

05 May 2006, 12:50 PM
TO ILUSIONDIGITAL: thank you ilu, for coming. and... you named my bird. :P

TO WAMBALL: bluish grey, got it!

TO SHAKES: i find the image a bit empty with just the girl herself. that's just my personal humble opinion though. I'm gonna hold your cent for now, texture the animals today and see if you like it. it might be the simple lambert that you dislike :P

TO BEE: *slap*这么久不来看我好意思么?*slap*ainimals balancing issue, got it~keep in touch.

05 May 2006, 01:32 PM
  Great update jack!!! You are working fast !!! my only crit will be the positioning of the animals it's a little bit to symetrical, 2 on each side. Maybe try to put 3 on the left and 1 on the right or simply get ride of one of them, in my opigion you can let go the beaver and that will balance you image. Also try to desaturate juste a little bite the colors of your caracters and that would be perfect.

I am sure that image will be a great success at the end. you did an amazing job with that project keep it up :bounce:

05 May 2006, 06:58 PM (

bird is done! yeah! finishing the first animal really give me the strength to complete this work!

05 May 2006, 12:09 AM (

textured raccoon, try to match the style of the bird. squirrel is the next and the last. so far i like what i've done with the animals.

05 May 2006, 01:35 AM (

squirrel texture completed. congradulate myself for finishing all major work. It is now final retouch time.

05 May 2006, 01:53 AM
Hurray! The character look great, although I would like to see them all together before you post your final image.

05 May 2006, 02:38 AM
earlier today one of my friend suggested me to cut the beaver out of the image, for breaking the square balance. therefore, beaver, ciao.

after all the animals i re-rendered LRP. By using the new blending method i used on the animals, i got a freshing looking on the girl.AO overlay with diffuse rocks!

now what you are seeing is the first final-preview. THIS IS NOT THE FINAL VERSION, there are about 10 things left that i need to fix. you will see a better result with the second final-preview which should come before noon of tomorrow.

please enjoy this update as much as possible.

05 May 2006, 02:40 AM (

here you go. first final preview

05 May 2006, 02:52 AM
I'd say your done! Fantastic piece!

05 May 2006, 03:11 AM
Lovely work and poses, very nice style too, i like this piece too much it makes me feel peacfuly and life with joy.

excelent work.

05 May 2006, 03:28 AM
thanks nathan, and thanks flameglow, for liking my work. i would definitly not call this one the final piece though, there still are some major color correction to do, right now i'm planning to finish everything tomorrow by 2pm est. then use the rest of hours to do upload in case anything goes wrong.

05 May 2006, 03:45 AM
I may sleep some time. So can not count on a 2 pm release from me. Isn't the deadline Saturday at noon? It should be backed up tomorrow?

05 May 2006, 09:02 AM
This a great entry,! Good posing and nice mood. All my best man!

05 May 2006, 09:23 AM
hey Jack- they are great animals! it's going to look great either way. the only thing I'd say at this late stage, is the beaver meant to be holding on to the bag? if it is I'd maybe move him to the right and down a he's being swung around. if he's not holding the bag, I'd move him out of the way a bit, coz it looks like he is!
top stuff mate!

05 May 2006, 09:24 AM
Looks great Jack, love the characters, one of my faves so far. Hope you make the final tweaks on time.

05 May 2006, 10:15 AM
 >u<Amazing work! <(^u^)/

looks much better without the little animal at the lower right~

i enjoy it very much!
yeah~keep in touch~:)

m(_ _)m不好意思~^u^我会经常来看的~ 师傅加油~

05 May 2006, 11:25 AM
I love what you've done with it! All of a sudden it's like everything has been pulled into focus. The character's expressions, the shading, the background. You're a magician!

05 May 2006, 12:38 PM
awesome style man. Composition and colors are really nice, the girl's expression and the mood u achieve here is totally unbelievable. Good luck if you need it.

05 May 2006, 01:12 PM
Guys... I've never seen these much replies at once before... *crying hard*

There aren't much i can give,to show how much i appreciate your visiting and comments at this almost-final moment of the chanllege. In fact, LRP is the only thing i got that might worth a penny. So please, my friends, enjoy the work as accepting my humble appreciation.THank you.

p.s: hey shakes. I believe it's the squirrel that you are talking about. the squirrel suppose to grab a bread from her bag and :P. the bread is badly done. that's one of the things i need to retouch. the idea is that the squirrel is grabing the bread meanwhile swung around with the same rythm of the jumping of the girl. It is also going to be mentioned in the story. wait for my second final-preview, hopefully it shows better.

05 May 2006, 01:22 PM
AMAZING ! Great job man to see it all together is just.... fantastic!!:bounce:

Exellent choice of colors for the animals, fit well and that new blending method is working great. I wish you the best.

05 May 2006, 02:54 PM
this picture is both fun and poetic ! it makes me feel happy when i look at those crazy squirrels ! Great, superb, wonderful

05 May 2006, 03:59 PM
Original style, cooool work

05 May 2006, 04:05 PM (

These are the things that I did for the second final-preview:

*added a tree trunk
*re-rendered the crown
*made shinny spark on the crown
*reposition the racoon so it stands on the trunk
*made the shadow for the racoon
*remade the shadow on the ground for LRP
*fixed the border of the charactors

4 things left:
*make a feather for the bird
*add a wood brush for LRP
*shadow on LRP
*color correction

hope you enjoy the second preview

05 May 2006, 07:15 PM (

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the final version of Little Run-away Princess.

05 May 2006, 07:17 PM
Wow thats really nice image, a mix of 2d and 3d feeling to the scene!

Good job man:thumbsup:

05 May 2006, 08:39 PM (

Yes! YES! She did it! She finally did it! After god-knows-how-many attempts, she finally escaped from that boring home!

What perfect timing! Dad was hunting with his royal guards; mom was having afternoon tea; her servants were busy cleaning the palace; even the gate guard was taking a nap! It was one of those chances you cannot miss.

So here we go, our lovely little princess is all by herself, knocking into the wild! It's going to be a great journey. She got EVERYTHING ready just for this moment: lip-stick, comb, mirror, and her teddy bear. Oh, not mentioning that she even grabed a piece of bread when she passed the kitchen!

Fully prepared, our little run-away princess's journey begins. No worry, nothing bad is going to happen. After all, she is a princess... you know what i'm saying?

The 13th challenge, the journey begins, comes right on time. I've been having this idea about a little something walking in the woods for a long time. I can't really tell where's the idea from. I guess it comes from here and there.

The princess is my second cartoony charactor, usually I try to go with realism. I want to keep her as "child" as possible, those cartoony animals helped the image stay "naive" as well.

Her dress, amoung all the 3d works, was the most difficult. It took me a month to do the searches, tried night over night. Apirl with her dress, was really a struggle.

The background was matte painted. It is my first matte paint work and seems like doing a good job.

It is my first try for designing animal charactors as well. The beaver, which is not in the final image, was inspirated by the coming animation "open season"; the bird was inspirated by a image I found on internet; the raccoon and the squirrel was designed by my own. I'm glad a lot of ppl gives good comment on the bird and squirrel.

LRP project took me almost full 3 months. 2 month of actual work and 1 month of searching. I'm glad that I can finish it on time, and I would like you all to enjoy this piece.

05 May 2006, 06:29 PM
Absolutely beautiful.... good 2d/3d integration, i like the colours and composition
Good luck man!!

05 May 2006, 08:02 PM
Awesome work! I really hope you do well. This is one of my favorites. Very beautiful usage of color and very happy. And she doesn't have black eyes anymore!

05 May 2006, 08:56 PM
Congratulations on finishing a lovely scene. You've done an excellent job of conveying a feeling of freedom. For a first time matte painting, you've done an awesome job. It has lots of depth and atmosphere.

05 May 2006, 10:37 PM
Beautifull final one! good luck pal!

05 May 2006, 10:41 PM
love this one, it makes me smile with the whole ol´face... :)

a great and fun image... well done Jack...:bounce:

05 May 2006, 10:44 PM
well done Jack, it's a lovely happy image, beautifully detailed! the animals look great, and you've blended them well into the picture. see you next time, eh?!

05 May 2006, 01:01 AM
took the whole day off today went shopping with girlfriend. I'm glad that she's still with me after me spending 3 months with another "girl" night over night. so, i guess this is it, 0 hrs left and here comes the end.

I have to, again, thank all of you, who gave me great visits once or many times. I'm glad that most of you likes the work. I wish all of you (including myself) good luck in the future. and yes, see you all next time :P
