I think that they want to keep it all in one place -- from the faq (stickied 2d forum) they want everything hosted on their servers, and all of the extra material that you make available. For the 'community involvement' part they'll be looking strictly in these forums I'd hazzard.

Your're doing a good job of setting up a journey from the pov of 'going away from something' (instead of going to something) which is a little different, good stuff. Base character is looking great :)

I guess i will close that wip thread and put everything over here. it's a safe way after all. and i'm glad that you like the idea. in fact this image is stating a transition period, she runs away from one "journey" for another "journey". as i was talking to my friend early today, that i'm gonna start dressing her. it's a bit challenging since the dress need to show her as a princess and also a travellor as well.

so the design of her dressing started. got couple of ideas of the overall looking, put them in 2d, but since only myself would understand what i draw, i won't put them as milestone. didn't do much mesh work, starting with 3 necklaces around her neck. here's just one of them.the other two will be way thinner and would be able to show the feeling of bouncing.

Glad to be of some help :) The thick necklace looks good -- having 3 should make for a nice spot of detail.

Well the nice thing about princesses is that they aren't noted for their practicality ;)

I did say i won't do hair simulation this time couple of weeks ago, but I just can't stop trying to work on hair sim. Lucky this time i got the feeling right by first shot. so here, my LRP (Little Run-away Princess) finally get rid off her "budda" look.

after being lazy for 5 days, her dress is done. I spent couple of days struggling with the idea of what kind of dress should i give it to her.

There are two kinds of run-away, the ones which are well planed, or the ones not. And for my case, it's the second one.

I want to make a little "stupid" princess. Running-away from the castle is the only thing in her mind. I want to make sure that her dress, her bag, and her whatever shows that she's not well prepared. that's why right now she doesn't looks like a travellor.

oh and, yah i starts to texture now. i plan to do a lot of ps work on the dress to fake the folding and all.

Looking good. I know that it is still early, but the texturing on her eye kinda makes her look like she's got a bruiser there. I'm sure you'll fix that. Anyway, looking forward to your progress. :)

I love the style! However the clothes look like they are made of paper and have no depth to them. I think you extrude an edge and move it inward it would give the illusion of depth.

grest progress :thumbsup: like the new hair. I agree with the previous post for the eye and the depth of the cloth, that will improved a lot your dress if you put i little bit of thinkness to it. Btw i like a lot the detail you put on the center part. Keep up you good work :)

TO Womball: I really thought today is like the worst monday ever in my life, untill you and Juice gave me all these great suggestions. I will keep working on the dress after i'm done with the facial texture. Again, thank you so much for your comment.

TO Cygnus_X: Eric thank you so much for lifting this post up again. I went to Indigo last thursday and bought a book which has like 500 abstruct patterns like the one you see on her skirt. they helps a lot and save me a lot of time from net-searching. and also thank you for confirming Juice and Womball's comment. I will put my hands on those as soon as possible.

i spend about 2 days finish the UVs, the plan is to pose her then finish the texuring.
so, now, she dances. this is going to be her final pose. I haven't finish weight mapping yet, also the hands looks a bit small. anyway, i'm planning to have her weighting + texturing done by this sunday.

If i'm right, it's the open one that you guys talking about right? i was hoping that i would get away with texture later on. no, usually it isn't one feature that is wrong with the mimic. look for reference. no-one in these refs, for example, close only one eye; i also never saw people doing that when lauging or smiling:] when eyes close, not only lids work; cheeks lift up, as mouth is widening, brows go down.

The first things that grab my attention when looking at her pose are her hands finger and shoulders. You've already pointed out that her hands are too small but one thing I notice is that her fingers feel very "default". A subtle posing of her fingers would really give her pose more character.

As far as the shoulders are concerned I think that even tho she's just a young girl, as high up as she has her arms raised right now I feel her trapezius and her deltoids would be much more flexed than how they are right now, watch out especially for that back shoulder where it looks like the rotation joint is a bit off..

Beyond that your model is going great and I know that texture wise you wont let us down keep it up.

I agree with the things Junerahe pointed out, and you might also want to move the corners of the mouth backwards, now it looks a bit too much like a 'flat triangle'

i took a short 5 mins redo the concept. the background is some image from internet, not mine. i'm just using it for ref. i change the horizontal idea to vertial. there will be 4 animals in the scene, a racoon that jump and try to catch her little travel bag; a bird gets scared and fly off, a squirrel try to grab her another little bad, and a rabbit runs by. a small castle far away indicates she runs away. hope you like the whole feeling

as Uiron suggested, i fixed the smile, it still not as good as i expect, again, i plan to fix it with texture.

the posing file somehow got corrupted, so i redid the pose, a bit different from the old one. i like the new one better, personally i think it has more action and more curve. right now still
working on weighting.

With the eye untextured, she reminds me of one of those dolls that a younger brother got hold off and tortured.
That's not such a bad thing though (perhaps she finally escaped his evil doll dungeon ala Toy Story)

I for one will be slightly upset when you texture her into a 'real' girl (I can picture torn stitching, holes in shoes and somne rubber burns etc - would be pretty cool)

TO Cygnus-X: i was working on her yesterday.without 5-mins-save.then power glith, all computer rebooted.lost what i did. that's just.whack. yes i was doing nothing new, just a little bit tweaking the pose, lost old projection so i created another one. i'm moving this weekend and then need some time to set up my new apt next week then there's easter break gf's planning to go to toronto for a trip. i don't know how much time i can get for myself in april >< that's just sad. but i will try to keep it up.

finally, back from...other things in life. i guess the time is really ticking now. i finished texturing the head tonight and probably will do a simple touch on the body skin, since they won't show much, before bed time. Anyway the idea is to finish 3d elements by the end of april.

for those who made comments on her freaky eyes and wierd facial expression, i hope you like the current update.

Welcome back! This looks much better! The eyes are still a bit dark, they could be a bit brighter I think. The teeth are really bright! They could be closer to the teeth in brightness.

TO WOMBALL: Thank you buddy for your welcome. it's nice to be back. i will light up the eyeballs tonight. the teeth is constant white with dirt map shader. that's why it's so bright. eyeballs has enviromental reflection on it. i used a night HDRI. i will change it to a day light one so it can be brighter.

TO sky_fox and flaminglow: thank you two for your nicely comments. those comments give me strength. Thank you.

i'm gonna redo the cloth mesh tonight. i had some idea during the last month. i think it would be better than the old version. let's see.

I guess it's pretty hard to put yourself back on the wheel after a long break, yet I finally manage to get it done. All those motivation came back in the recent day or two and, here we go, more LRP.

I can't remember how many dress styles i did or tried for her. Come to think of it, the dress was what slowed me down. i did not dressed her in the concept because i couldn't get a clear image in my head of what i really want to put on her; i spend longer time on dressing mesh due to lacking of concept...

But all these matters not now. I got her dressing-concept-mesh done. I don't know about you guys, but i like it. it's not complete yet, but it makes me want to work on it more, rather than delete everything that i did in 3 hrs and say "i just wasted another night".

Hey Jack, nice pose! Very, very expressive! Glad you are back. I think you've done a fantastic job with the dress and her blouse. Maybe a little more shadow under the trim of her skirt?? Would definitely not "delete the whole thing" this is really exceptionally good work. Also like the way you have splayed her hands, continuing motion in her arms. She's a really cute model...I think she looks great! Hope to see more! (Oh, and sheez, Nancy in your portfolio is hot!)

i downloaded xsi try-out at work today and worked a bit on her accessories.

Unlike the cloth, I had the ideas of what i want to do with her bags from day one. Now here comes the part that i really like about my concept: I don't want to make a "mature" journey-begins. Meaning unlike most of the regular travellers who knows what they are doing and having everything prepared, our little princess has an awful preparation. All her bags will be compratively small, and most of what's in the bags are nothing travel-related.

I find the new elements make the image more alive. hope you like it as well.

I love the feeling of soft cloth u have on her dress.. it almost looks like silk. I love ur concept of bad preparation. Her face looks great although i feel teh upper lip's volume should be spread out more because the middle of the upper lip doesnt look like its stretching along with the smile. Beyond that I think everything looks great. Sorry its so brief im pissed off cause I had to write this twice because of GCTalk Maintenance.... keep posting jack:thumbsup:

I brought LRP scene to work, but forgot to take the textures with me :P so here's a mesh render. I found little simple details such as the tie between the little bag and her belts makes the image much richer and alive. she's getter cuter and happier.

i'm gonna finish meshing her and her stuff today then start texturing her tomorrow.

did some folds on her shoes, some little thing on the glove. a little bunny on the bag. the most important thing, she throws things now.

there's gonna be a teddy bear and a crown in her "throwing-bag". not that she doesn't want what's in the bag, it's just that she's like super happy about her run-away so she forgets about anything else.

Hey Jack, really like the addition of these props they capture the movement and personality of your character...really wonderful. The bend in her right knee, just behind her kneecap, seems a bit rubbery, perhaps you are already planning to take care of that by painting weights for your rig. Sorry can't suggest any other positive crits. Great work! Looking for more!

omg, she throw her teddy away! T.T that's just...wrong!

basiclly, now everything that belongs to her are done. I jump back to her dress, adding more details so she looks more like a real princess.

about her teeth, lips texture, and shadows under skirt, i will correct them during the texturing process. her right knee is fixed (or i assume it feels better now :P).

hope you enjoy it for now. more coming tomorrow.

My only C&C's are the crown, I would make it stand out a little more, like being lofted in the air.

as one of my colleague suggested, I touched her hair a bit to give it more flying feeling.

and more texture. the plan is to finish her texture tomorrow; do animals mesh on monday 8th; texturing animals on tuesday 9th; set up simple mesh for the enviroment on 10th and, start matte painting on 11th and try to finish everything around 20th.

So most of the mesh are textured with a few small parts left. feel like uploading a image before dinner.

Haven't been through for a bit -- character has turned out really well. Good energy, and details in the right spots. Will be exciting to see that integrate with the backdrop, the image sampler makes it look like there will be plenty to see there as well :)

the problem of with the one i did before is that everything is bright, everything is warm. almost too bright to keep my LRP in focus.

so i did another version, kinda foggy and gloomy one. not sure which one is good now. need some advice here.

Looking very good. The gloomier one is much better.

A suggestion; you need to match the foreground area with warmer colours to match back your 3d girl. Leave the background cold and gloomy; this will lend contrast and emphasis to your theme. Happy colours in the foreground that blend into the cold clammy background, a metaphor for leaving something bad for something better.

it's really getting fun. I guess i will do a another matte painting after the challenge.

the big pieces are almost all in the right place now. just need to touch a lot of small areas so they are not that recognizable from the originals.

today is 15th. planning to have another 4 days on it then go back to the animals.

i did a quick test on light ray during my coffee break at work. basiclly put some orange light on the road and the grass to warm the front image, and some light ray plus lens flare.

this version is not confirmed yet. it's still in its light testing period. I just want to try bunch of methods today to get the right feeling so tonight i can spend less time on thinking about how should i do to achive what i want.

one of my old buddy pointed out that there's not enough light rays. he suggested me to do a volumic light in xsi and composit in photoshop.

i gave it a try but wasn't good enough. so i painted more rays by hand.

the image now is much more warmer and happier. what do you think?

i put some orange light on the left tree, try to make it feels closer to the LRP. again, make the image warmer.

plus made the space between the two hils a bit more blue so the color gets richer.

That is a very nice image you got there. However, i do have some minor crits ;). Biggest thing would be the lighting on the girl - if you compare it to the lighting of, say, that tree on the right, you notice she lacks a hint of deeper shadow on the left side. She would 'sit' better in there with some more shadow. Also, you could nudge her up a tiny bit - IMHO the composition would be a bit improved.
Now for the matte, you could have a nice 'hotspots' where the 'god rays' hit the ground, foliage etc. Obviously, you gotta be careful not to drag the attention away from the girl, but it may be a nice touch, if subtly done. I have the foreground in mind, i see there are some such nice places in the middle ground ;). But speaking of middle ground, the lower left one-third of the image does not really read that well, at least at that size - it's bit confusing, what really is happening there?.

Still, i like the image very much, lot's of fun it is. :thumbsup:

i was planning to finish the bg in 2 days then do the animals, untill azazel made some great comment on the lighting. i'm going to put the background on hold for now, waiting for azazel's further instructions on the lighting. meanwhile i am starting the animals.

here's the animal concept. all animals will be done in low poly. not sure if i will use hair simulations on them yet.

Sorry for mixing things up. ;). I'll try to make myself clear this time ;).

What i wanted to say is that left part of the middle ground, the part between the tree and the foreground grass is ... confusing. I can't really tell what is going on there. Is it grassy area ? Maybe, but then there are some angular shapes. That whole part of the image could probably be simplier without any harm. I let myself do a little and messy paintover, including the part about the girl as well... sorry about the quality, i did it with a mouse ;) (didn't have my wacom at hand).

I would have to disagree here azazel. Simplifying the part you highlighted (rocks) would sorta break the balance of the image. The rocks are in oposition with the castle and they fill the bottom left space pretty well. IMO having rounder rocks would be more eye-candy than these quite bulky ones.

The background layer with the mountains (?) is not visible enough IMO. We can only distinguish three circular shapes in the center which are actually the sky it seems. A bit more contrast there would do the image some good I think.

Just my 2 cents.

Besides the above crits it's a very nice image and mood you came up with, I really like the pose and facial expression of the lil girl.

Waiting for them animals to come! :)

To some extent you are right - i just made that part a solid color, and that is indeed not right. It needs detail, but the kind of detail that is recognise-able. If there are to be rocks, they shoud read more clearly as rocks - maybe some shading, or more rocky texture ? I looked few posts back, and that particular area looks bit like distant mountain slopes in that background sketch-collage post (that one:
They retained some of the shape and texture, that's why i say it's bit confusing ;).

TO azazek: love you love you love you love you... hehe. joking. I've been looking for crits for days till you step in. great timing. I now understand your confusion about the gress. the one version you linked is almost at the begining of the bg work, which i gave up. However it's still a useful comment. I checked the area that you mentioned, the connection between the rock and the grass, it is NOT blending well. i put on my fix list and will do it as soon as i finish the animals.

The LRP, i haven't touch her yet, therefore the shadows on her go wrong. That one is bewared, but thank you for mentioning. plus your quick shadow fix gives me a visual direction of how i should do it. It helps a lot since lighting is not my major.

Again, thank you all for giving me strength and kicking my butt to make me go higher.

great critters jack-very nice designs. one thing I was thinking- do you really need them? It's a fabulous image with just the girl, and my first impression is the animals look a little out of style with the rest, and add clutter to it.

TO womball: hi wom! thank you for visiting me a lot lately, specially two times tonight. (my big blinking eyes full of water T.T). I hope the last update answers your question of where the bird goes. to answer your second question, yes the bird was basiclly done with modifie spheres(mainly) and cubes. i have about, let's say around 50 spheres and 10 cubes on that bird, it's easier to pose or to animation a simple object, in this case, the bird, with just parenting to the bones. took me 2 mins to pose this one without editing weight. feels pretty good :P

To shakes: hey shakes my buddy! i just checked your work today looks pretty good and you still have sometime so keep yourself tight. let's not talking about texturing those animals for ....tonight or even tomorrow...such a pain in the butt to make them fit into the image. i will get the squirrel done tonight or tomorrow...

this is the color theme of animals with LRP. the aimals are suppose to create a focus spot with LRP. hopefully they are doing the right job in terms of modeling and compositing.

The two bottom animals are too close in color to each other. They are also the same tone as the girl is. So I would suggest changing the colors and tones of the 2 animals to draw more attention to her colorful dress. The beaver I would make brown or orange (different tone than the girl though), and the racoon grey or bluish grey.

one of my friend suggested me about the perspective of the charactors so I change the camera a bit. it goes lower than the old one so now LRP faces higher, looks happier imo.

:thumbsup: :thumbsup: Great update jack!!! You are working fast !!! my only crit will be the positioning of the animals it's a little bit to symetrical, 2 on each side. Maybe try to put 3 on the left and 1 on the right or simply get ride of one of them, in my opigion you can let go the beaver and that will balance you image. Also try to desaturate juste a little bite the colors of your caracters and that would be perfect.

I am sure that image will be a great success at the end. you did an amazing job with that project keep it up :bounce:

earlier today one of my friend suggested me to cut the beaver out of the image, for breaking the square balance. therefore, beaver, ciao.

after all the animals i re-rendered LRP. By using the new blending method i used on the animals, i got a freshing looking on the girl.AO overlay with diffuse rocks!

now what you are seeing is the first final-preview. THIS IS NOT THE FINAL VERSION, there are about 10 things left that i need to fix. you will see a better result with the second final-preview which should come before noon of tomorrow.

please enjoy this update as much as possible.

thanks nathan, and thanks flameglow, for liking my work. i would definitly not call this one the final piece though, there still are some major color correction to do, right now i'm planning to finish everything tomorrow by 2pm est. then use the rest of hours to do upload in case anything goes wrong.

hey Jack- they are great animals! it's going to look great either way. the only thing I'd say at this late stage, is the beaver meant to be holding on to the bag? if it is I'd maybe move him to the right and down a bit..like he's being swung around. if he's not holding the bag, I'd move him out of the way a bit, coz it looks like he is!

There aren't much i can give,to show how much i appreciate your visiting and comments at this almost-final moment of the chanllege. In fact, LRP is the only thing i got that might worth a penny. So please, my friends, enjoy the work as accepting my humble appreciation.THank you.

p.s: hey shakes. I believe it's the squirrel that you are talking about. the squirrel suppose to grab a bread from her bag and :P. the bread is badly done. that's one of the things i need to retouch. the idea is that the squirrel is grabing the bread meanwhile swung around with the same rythm of the jumping of the girl. It is also going to be mentioned in the story. wait for my second final-preview, hopefully it shows better.

These are the things that I did for the second final-preview:

*added a tree trunk
*re-rendered the crown
*made shinny spark on the crown
*reposition the racoon so it stands on the trunk
*made the shadow for the racoon
*remade the shadow on the ground for LRP
*fixed the border of the charactors

4 things left:
*make a feather for the bird
*add a wood brush for LRP
*shadow on LRP
*color correction

Yes! YES! She did it! She finally did it! After god-knows-how-many attempts, she finally escaped from that boring home!

What perfect timing! Dad was hunting with his royal guards; mom was having afternoon tea; her servants were busy cleaning the palace; even the gate guard was taking a nap! It was one of those chances you cannot miss.

So here we go, our lovely little princess is all by herself, knocking into the wild! It's going to be a great journey. She got EVERYTHING ready just for this moment: lip-stick, comb, mirror, and her teddy bear. Oh, not mentioning that she even grabed a piece of bread when she passed the kitchen!

Fully prepared, our little run-away princess's journey begins. No worry, nothing bad is going to happen. After all, she is a princess... you know what i'm saying?


The 13th challenge, the journey begins, comes right on time. I've been having this idea about a little something walking in the woods for a long time. I can't really tell where's the idea from. I guess it comes from here and there.

The princess is my second cartoony charactor, usually I try to go with realism. I want to keep her as "child" as possible, those cartoony animals helped the image stay "naive" as well.

Her dress, amoung all the 3d works, was the most difficult. It took me a month to do the searches, tried night over night. Apirl with her dress, was really a struggle.

The background was matte painted. It is my first matte paint work and seems like doing a good job.

It is my first try for designing animal charactors as well. The beaver, which is not in the final image, was inspirated by the coming animation "open season"; the bird was inspirated by a image I found on internet; the raccoon and the squirrel was designed by my own. I'm glad a lot of ppl gives good comment on the bird and squirrel.

LRP project took me almost full 3 months. 2 month of actual work and 1 month of searching. I'm glad that I can finish it on time, and I would like you all to enjoy this piece.

took the whole day off today went shopping with girlfriend. I'm glad that she's still with me after me spending 3 months with another "girl" night over night. so, i guess this is it, 0 hrs left and here comes the end.
