View Full Version : 3dlabs no more :(

First 3dfx, now this. Sadly Creative is finished with 3dlabs.

nVidia and Ati will probably bid for 3dlabs. Or maybe not.
After all, openGL might be a thing of the past after Vista.

Regardles of what anyone thinks. Opengl will never die. For one it is cross platform, and all the major 3d applications used for film work have it built into their cores. Opengl is stable and still robust even now. Directx is still too unstable for anything serious in my opinion though its alot better than it was a few versions back. Most likely what will happen is that once again vendors will extend opengl to acquire features which are not in the current api.

Interesting story to read it in full.

Remember Elsa? Another maker of high-end cards. Now it's all ATI & Nvidia.

Look, Microsoft doesn't/won't lease(or make it too cost prohibitive) or allow the use of Directx on competing operating systems. Those operating systems(primarily linux and os x) still need to have the ability to display 3d graphics. The reality is openGL is NOT going away any time soon, it is just silly to assume as much.
