Latest Update: Modeling: ZBrush progress... (

This is what I made to take into zbrush. I'm new to zbrush so I don't really know how this is going to turn out...

Progress from behind...

Nice zbrush and box modeling!

So whats your concept?

03 March 2006, 07:37 AM
Nice start. What is your main idea? :)

03 March 2006, 07:38 AM (

Ok so here is what I've got so far. As you can see from my box dude mesh I didn't really know where I was going with this model.

I've got a few ideas, which I haven't yet done concept sketches for that could use such a creature.

I haven't really decided what I'm doing with his lower half hence he still has sausage toes...mmm sausages :P

03 March 2006, 08:02 AM
Wow you guys r quick I thought I'd get them all posted before anyone saw :P

Basically I just wanted to learn zbrush, make a cool creature and finally enter a cg challenge. Now I just have to think of a cool way to make them all work together.

Ok so here is my favorite idea which is pretty lame...Instead of the usual good guy setting off on an adventure to conquer evil I thought I’d have an evil character setting of on an adventure to conquer good. He would be starting in a dark and slimy environment traveling towards a bright and fresh looking environment. He would be bearing weapons and possibly wearing human heads as trophy’s to make his intentions more obvious.

Another idea I had after looking at many inspiring images from Boris Vallejo was having my creature and a human female babe holding hands like they're at the alter getting married. Instead of a priest there would be some big scary dude is a dark robe. Instead of a ring their would be blood dripping from their hands like they’d just become blood brothers…er…or whatever.

So that’s what I’ve got so far now I just have to get it done and since I gave my months notice at my current job a few days ago soon I’ll have plenty of free time to finish it off…YAY :D

A little more definition...

A little more definition...

03 March 2006, 06:30 AM (

He's got a face now and some muscles on his legs. I'm reasonably happy with the look of his face so it will probably stay. Haven't decided on the look of the mouth yet...

03 March 2006, 06:35 AM (

I want the character to look evil, any suggestions as to how I might acheive this would be greatly appreciated :)

...I'm trying some spikes n stuff but they just feel lame, maybe once they have more detail in them they won't look so bad.

03 March 2006, 06:39 AM (

Hmm...The feet probably wont get to much more attention because I'm pretty sure you won't be seen in the final image.

03 March 2006, 03:54 PM
Yeah, I just learn Z- brush a few days ago finally - but I don't think I m going to use it for this contest. Just remember not to overkill it in Z brush. Be looking forward to your concept.

Hey looking good for a first zbrush attempt! Interesting character as well...keep it up!

03 March 2006, 09:03 AM (

I'm making an arm! ...I need more reference! Where can I get more reference of buff guys?

03 March 2006, 01:29 PM (

Hey guys please help me out with these damn muscles. Where can I get some good reference? ...preferably photo or video reference rather than drawn.

Please critique.

I'm new to zbrush so I don't really know how this is going to turn out...

Sorry... had to have those two quotes on the same post.
Stunning modelling...

EDIT: More usefull to you maybe would be...

03 March 2006, 07:19 PM
forearm is too long, elbow should be in the middle of the hand; shoulder is completely messed up, i'd really recommend to study at least basics of underlying anatomy, if you want to have these muscles in the right place. i quite like the wrist and the lap, though they need minor corrections, too.

03 March 2006, 10:48 PM
Thanks for the compliment and the reference links. Every reference image I see makes it a little clearer :)

Thanks for the critique :) Hey yeah the forearm is to long, I'll correct that in my next wip. "elbow should be in the middle of the hand"...I'm not sure what you meant by this? I haven't gotten to the shoulder yet :) "i quite like the wrist and the lap"...lap?

Thanks guys :)

03 March 2006, 10:58 PM
Looking pretty good Paul. The muscles are a little bit exaggerated but maybe thats what your going for. Heres some reference.

03 March 2006, 03:32 AM
Thankyou very much for the reference links. Those cross fading sketches are awesome. I'm keeping the muscles very defined to help me keep track of where they all go as I learn the anatomy.

03 March 2006, 05:41 AM
Paul! Sweet modeling dude!

03 March 2006, 07:20 AM
Hey Greg :wavey:

Things are slowly coming together. I could spend 3 months trying to perfect this arm. I'm really loving zbrush.

Did I ever thank you for answering my zbrush questions? ...I have a bad habit of writing half an email saving the draft and never getting around to finishing it :( ...thanks again(possibly) :D

Only 7 more days and I'm a free man, hopefully then I'll start to make a lot more progress :)

03 March 2006, 07:53 AM
Yup ..sweet work ...u asked for some ref ...i tried to find some on web that might help...but if they are not good..i could scan some from Hogarth's book...check this...

plenty more here...

hope it helps...have fun.

03 March 2006, 08:07 AM
Thanks for the reference :D

03 March 2006, 09:33 AM
The model is really nice.
I'm not so concerns about the accuracy of the anatomy. It's not human anyway.

03 March 2006, 02:26 PM
oh god, i've really shown my terrible english in my previous post, i shouldn't be posting after a long working day:] these had to be "elbow should be in the middle of the arm", and "i quite like the wrist and the hand".
sorry again:]

Don't know where I'm going with this, I will probably end up smoothing out a lot of the muscle detail. It was originally going to be an unhealthy/skinny looking character...this guy looks pretty healthy.

03 March 2006, 02:44 AM
']It was originally going to be an unhealthy/skinny looking character...this guy looks pretty healthy.

So healthy in fact it looks like it could tear me in half fairly easily :) Great job with it, toss in some colour detail and you've definately got a villian there. Has getting it to that nicely detailed stage helped you narrow down the concept?

03 March 2006, 03:01 AM
Has getting it to that nicely detailed stage helped you narrow down the concept?

Hmm probably not, I often get caught up trying to make elements of the anatomy look cool and forget about the overall character...

03 March 2006, 07:09 AM
That guy is ripped, wonder how may sit-ups it takes to get thoes kind of abs :P.

Really good zbrush work, some of the best i've seen cosidering the box model you started from.

 Well I redid the base mesh before I posted the first pic of the arm. I didn't think it was worth submitting to the thread. I will post a pic of the new topology when I next submit progress.

Thankyou all for you comments :)

03 March 2006, 11:03 AM
Your model is wonderfull, really acurate and beautiful, I like it, :applause:

03 March 2006, 05:52 PM
interesting progress here, good modeling and i like the proportions of the bust. Good work ! ! Keep it up !

03 March 2006, 10:26 AM

04 April 2006, 04:22 AM (

...damn its been a month since my last update :( I've been very busy, things have calmed down now so I'll be spending much more time on this.

I've got to start planning out my composition so I don't work on any unnecessary detail.

04 April 2006, 03:26 PM (

3Dspline - This what the new topology looks like.

04 April 2006, 03:33 PM (

Still pretty rough in some areas, particularly his butt, feet and head(excluding his face).

I think he's going to be wearing some clothes/armour which will cover his crotch and butt.

04 April 2006, 12:47 PM
Heya mate.

Been checking in from time to time, but nothing new for a while. Good to see you got some time at last.

Like his face a lot, nice style. Cool with alien types that are more stylish than discusting if you know what i mean.
