hi everyone ! this is my first time entering a challenge here and well, i registered just for that so that's my very first post on cgtalk too.
theme is very inspiring, can't wait to get started.

some girl with her two worker robots. pretty classic composition. they're leaving their home up there on the mountain, because they need something to fix some broken machinery or maybe just some milk for breakfast, dont know yet.

Hey Banjowanjo!

This is a lovely sketch and great composition - you obviously have great drawing skills - so i'll be interested to see what kind of style you bring to your 3d work.
I think its a great image. The only negative i can say (and i am being really picky) is that it doesnt throw up any exciting questions to me about what might be going to happen next -i somehow dont get the impression that its an epic journey so much as a hike -but i dont know whether that should remotely matter to you though, as lets face it - its my entirely subjectve viewpoint! And i think i am being a tad unfair, as at this stage its difficult to comment on specifics. I do think this image has the potential to be incredibly strong, but it will really depend on subtly of detail to make the concept extra special.

Really looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

hi Selina ! glad you like it !
i understand your point, and that must be because i usualy like when characters feel like just living their life and that gotta hurt the epic felling. thank you for sharing your view, i'll think about it.
i don't think i'm going super-realistic with this. i'd like to keep this all about composition, light and shadows.

03-01-2006, 06:43 PM
Hey again!

I agree- and think with your piece the beauty of the concept will certainly be enhanced by the details - the interaction between the characters and colours and lighting you choose. I think thats a great approach because it does then throw up questions for the viewer about the interaction of the characters -i always like art the leaves you wondering about the world it inhabits, if you know what i mean -it keeps on drawing you back for another look.
I'm glad you say you arent going to go super realistic with it -i think its definately a mood piece - and hyper realism could subtract from that. This is gonna be interesting!

nice concept :) good luck !

03-05-2006, 01:27 PM (

characters concept, i'm not that happy with them yet. the second robot doesn't quite match.

03-05-2006, 01:36 PM
Nice illustration and good character design. I like the middle one, looks like he has a big load. Possible making the legs wider like the hands could show more character.

03-05-2006, 01:38 PM (

early background modeling, simple poly.

quick test render

Hey Benoit,

Nice start to your challenge, the sketch looks great as does your modeling of the terrain. Look forward to more updates.

first character

03-10-2006, 06:54 PM (

little evolution of my first concept. I've been thinking about some dark forest foreground the characters will be walking into. like an exit for the valley they come from. would be nice if they look worried about doing so.

03-11-2006, 01:34 PM (

here are some steps for the first robot.

03-11-2006, 01:38 PM (

i didn't go into much detail, many parts are kind of cheap but i think that's all i need right now. i'll add a few surface details with normal maps later.

03-11-2006, 01:41 PM
hey, concept is great, and this little character is so cute ! detail level give him a real good style with this big bags !

03-11-2006, 02:41 PM
I like the robot a lot. Keep up the good work! ;)

03-11-2006, 02:55 PM
I really like the looks of this. The robots are so different yet really express character. Even the differences in the loads they are carrying help express their character.
Great visual storytelling!

03-11-2006, 03:42 PM
I like this second char with all the ballast on his back!
This looks promissing! good modeling..

Keep going.. ;)

03-11-2006, 04:36 PM
Simple, but effective. The little robot is awesome!

03-11-2006, 04:50 PM
Nice concept! Great characters and modeling!

03-11-2006, 05:17 PM
thanks everyone, glad you like it ! I think i'll go on with modeling the second robot and maybe a fourth character i've been thinking about before starting textures and shading.

03-11-2006, 05:40 PM
this looks good, the last pic you posted has some great character to it & i'm looking forward to seeing you detail it

good stuff!

03-11-2006, 05:51 PM
This is way cool! I love the backpak:)

03-12-2006, 05:16 PM
Hey, i really like the whole concept and specialy your last update. The little robot is really cool with his big heavy bag behind:)

03-15-2006, 02:26 PM

second robot in the team

03-15-2006, 04:00 PM (

some steps/closeups for the guy

03-15-2006, 04:33 PM
Very cool. It looks like you are moving nicely. I think this piece will have a very nice feel when you are done with it.

03-18-2006, 08:00 PM (

the main character will now be a little girl.

03-18-2006, 08:04 PM
Interesting. I'm all right with it. Andrew aproves. move on :D :arteest:

03-18-2006, 09:04 PM (

I regrouped the steps for the girl into one big image. just a story about boxes and edge drawing.

03-18-2006, 09:09 PM (

here's the girl. i'm not that sure about proportion and such yet. I surely will tweak that a little more before starting with the textures. let me know what you think about it

03-19-2006, 11:05 PM (

first textures and shaders for the little girl.

03-20-2006, 02:14 AM
I love the girl and the colour palette youve chosen for her outfit. Very sweet!

03-20-2006, 02:51 AM
I love the robots, very unique, dif, but from the same family type...

would love to see some of the background sketches or what you have in mind.

Also how about playing out the perspective a little

03-20-2006, 09:44 AM
You've got nice characters but I find they don't seems to be in the same type of picture. You know like they are coming form different styles.

03-21-2006, 10:42 AM
selina : thanks. I didn't have any colours in mind when starting the textures (except for one thing : the little bag had to be pink :) ), I just wanted it to look a little girly.

smallone : I already posted some sketches for the background but I feel like I will need more of them before starting with modeling. like a colour/lighting sketch and where will there be rock or grass. I'm planing on having the three characters detailed and textured before starting this.

authentic : I see your point but I still feel like I can have them to get along well. the first big girl is out now and there will only be the two robot and the little girl. the second robot will be the less cute in his serious-looking role but he has a poncho. ponchos are important. anyway i'll think about it, thanks !
