02 February 2006, 09:59 PM
Oh! Hey! Thanks guys! :)

I'm playing with some ideas.

It seems they've gone from one extreme to the other with the challenges - The Spectacular challenge was really open, but this theme seems overly narrow - If everyone adheres closely to the guidelines we'll all be doing practically the same picture!

03 March 2006, 11:51 AM
Hiya Mate, just droppin by to wish ya lots of fun and a great Journey :)

03 March 2006, 12:41 PM (

This little idea popped into my head this morning.

It will be a scenic shot with a pony and cart - full of enthusiastic adventurers. The pony is not so happy about the excursion...

So, to start with I did this sketch to try and capture the pony's personality.

03 March 2006, 03:34 PM (

I want a whole bunch of these guys lounging in the cart - getting very drunk! :D

03 March 2006, 03:46 PM
cutenesss mate. great studies, keep em coming :))

03 March 2006, 04:09 PM
The sketches are cool ... :)

03 March 2006, 05:12 PM
nice so far mate.... that dude looks like adwarf from snow white and the seven

03 March 2006, 07:44 PM
I love the pony facial concept. Note in real life a not so happy pony ears would be pinned back but its more expressive how you have it. Looking forward to seeing more.

03 March 2006, 02:55 AM
cute looking lil old man :scream:some nice expression studies here~keep them coming mate and best of luck to ya

03 March 2006, 04:28 AM
nice colors

good luck

03 March 2006, 10:58 PM (

Another quick rough - same thing really... just trying to get a feel for it, and nail the style of the piece.

I did some others in pencil last night.. but... umm.... I'm too lazy to scan them! :P

Thanks for your comments! :)

03 March 2006, 08:36 PM
hahah hes soo cool and so funny ur style man:buttrock:

03 March 2006, 09:01 PM
Thanks... I'm not sure how much this is 'my style' though! I don't do cartoony stuff very often - but it's nice to do something different now and again! ;)

03 March 2006, 07:47 PM (

Just a quickie I did in the week.

Hope you can get an idea of what I'm aiming at overall...

...cause I haven't got a clue! :D

I'll try and do something more substantial over the weekend...

Thanks for looking!

03 March 2006, 09:34 PM
Cool looking concepts Myth! I am still unsure as u are, too of where u want to take this, haha!

03 March 2006, 10:18 PM
Thanks beelow!

I was only joking though... ;)

Just have to figure out the most effective composition.

03 March 2006, 11:41 PM
Nice ass.

No, I mean... You know what I mean. Good lighting too.

03 March 2006, 11:50 PM
Oi! Are you trying to compromise the integrity of my thread?!!! :p

03 March 2006, 11:53 PM (

Just did this...

Not much expression - just trying to give a better idea of what's supposed to be in the pic.

Might try to include more open scenery though...

03 March 2006, 05:58 PM
It's got such depth. Damn that's good! Flesh this one out and it'll be fantastic.

03 March 2006, 09:06 PM
nice sketch, good sunny atmosphere :)

03 March 2006, 09:30 PM
nice colors, great sketches

03 March 2006, 10:20 PM
JTD - Thanks! - It's an interesting effect, though I'm not sure I'll blur the actual piece like this. I prefer to use painterly techniques...

Arseny - Thankyou - I haven't decided on the weather yet - but I'm quite keen on a hazy summer day...

Squibbit - Cheers! :)

03 March 2006, 10:30 PM (

Another quickie I did last night...

I really want to nail the style before I get started on the actual piece.

One problem I'm having is that the theme is kind of a parody - so if elements are clichéd it actually goes with the feel of the piece. But my usual instincts are towards more original stylised pieces...

So - it's fun to do something very different, but also an added challenge!

I hope I'll find a happy balance... :D

03 March 2006, 10:33 PM
nice... :bounce: this gonna be fun to follow

03 March 2006, 12:37 AM
I really like your painting style... I need to start using my painting in a more sketchy sort of way like your doing here... going to be very interesting and very helpfull to me to see this one develop... hope you post lots!

03 March 2006, 01:39 AM
Nice little updates dude, keep'em coming! I will be watching!

03 March 2006, 10:32 AM
Good luck, looks good sofar, will be back for more.

03 March 2006, 03:48 PM (

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?!!... No! - It's... just another quick sketch! :P

03 March 2006, 03:54 PM
Thanks for all the comments! (overly generous as they may be..)

I really like your painting style... I need to start using my painting in a more sketchy sort of way like your doing here... going to be very interesting and very helpfull to me to see this one develop... hope you post lots!

...helpful?! As in 'so you'll know what not to do'?!! :curious:

03 March 2006, 03:23 AM
Hey Mythmaker!

I can't speak for norvman, but I find it extremely helpful seeing how an image develops from the original concept or concepts through to the finished piece. Not so much in learning not what to do, but getting an insight into the thought process of the artist and how they interpret the theme of the challenge.

Looking forward to seeing your final image....

04 April 2006, 11:22 AM (

I'm really keen to get working on the full picture now - just haven't had much time for it... I'm really looking forward to the Easter holiday! :D

04 April 2006, 11:16 PM (

It's a kodak moment! :D

04 April 2006, 08:23 AM
cool concept, bad a$$ horse, I really like your style. Yes, I agree, really nice expressions, I think expressions would be the key element of the concept 'drunken oafs'.
Good luck!

my journey begins (

04 April 2006, 03:09 PM
i like the last one...the dudes look like they are having fun and not caring whee they are going...the trip could be "starting" when they wake up from their little me sometimes :)

04 April 2006, 04:43 PM
nice sketches. are they all elements in a greater composition? I'd like to see that. great stuff. I love the expressions you achieve on the characters.

04 April 2006, 07:25 PM
Thanks for the feedback! I'm hoping to get started on the full pic in the next couple days (fingers crossed!)...

The best indicator of what I'm aiming at is the concept sketch on the second page (the one with all the greenery). If you can picture the other sketches integrated into that... then you might get an idea of where it's going... ehm... or just be really confused!

05 May 2006, 11:50 AM (

Think it's about time I posted some updates!

This was a bit of a pain to do - didn't really enjoy it, but I perservered cause I knew it would make the painting go more smoothly.

I was going to take it further than this but got bored. Still - it gave me a good start! :P

I'll post the first colour in a moment...

05 May 2006, 12:00 PM (

This has to be one of the most fun stages - as it progesses very quickly from dull lines to full colour scene! :D

It looks quite tight at this size - but this is just the basic block in. I've already spent several hours on it since, so I've filled in some more details (like a proper harness and umm... sticky out wood-things that go either side of the pony...).

I'm also toying with a sign post in the foreground - looks quite funky, but I haven't decided whether to include it yet.

I'll post another update once I've got it feeling more coherent... ;)

05 May 2006, 12:05 PM
Arrghh cute, i love it.
Your style is very cool ;)

05 May 2006, 04:23 PM
great painting this. easy to understand, great emotion in the characters. good luck with the final detailing. i really wanna see this finished. good stuff

05 May 2006, 11:50 AM
This is looking really promising! Nice light, great subject and lots of cool characters, including a horse! I just looked at your first page and the 'no last minute rushes' comment.... i reckon you've got some rushing to do! :)

Good luck with it (and Painter's Acrylics!)

05 May 2006, 01:07 PM
Did I say that?!!! Surely not I?!!

Yes... a bit of rushing indeed I have to do... BUT - Thankfully I'm in a much better position than the last 2 challenges!

Elendil - Thankyou!

domclubb - Cheers! - That's a reasurring comment!

05 May 2006, 09:03 PM (

Umm... Here's an update! :)

Sorry I haven't posted sooner, but I have still got loads to do on it...

Lots of detailing, refining, and some general fixing and balancing.

Thanks for looking! ;)

05 May 2006, 07:22 AM
Really it's a good work ;)

I love it ...

05 May 2006, 11:47 AM (

Done a round of detailing.

I think it's starting to come together. Still many hours of work left though...

05 May 2006, 04:52 AM

05 May 2006, 08:55 AM (

...on with the final push! :D

05 May 2006, 09:32 PM (

“Another Whirlwind Adventure!”

A warm zephyr blew through the valley. The grass rippled, and the leaves seemed to dance – as if sharing in the fun. This promised to be another grand adventure! The beer flowed, and the song along with it. All was well… except – somewhere amongst the throng of merriment, someone wasn’t quite as overjoyed as the rest…

“Oh yeah… happy, happy… joy, joy… Bleh!… If this is going to be anything like the last one” Thought Bill the Pony “…I think I might just take a long walk off the next available cliff…!”

05 May 2006, 11:41 PM (

I made a few minor alterations before uploading the full image. The changes are barely noticeable, but I thought I'd post it anyway...

And I just want to say congratulations to everone who got their pics finished - and the very best of luck to you all! :)

05 May 2006, 12:40 AM
cool stuff man! kind of reminds me of robin hood in some ways! good luck mythmaker :)

05 May 2006, 12:45 AM
congrats on your great final, funny lovely piece with a great atmosphere and awesome characters, love how you approached it with style and humor :) best of luck on the final Judgements!

05 May 2006, 07:21 AM
I feel with Billy the Pony... poor thing... :D and I love that luxuriant foliage and the light...

05 May 2006, 06:16 PM
Slav - Thanks! - Good job on yours too! ;)

Sacha - Cheers! - Glad you like it! It was a bit different to my usual stuff - I decided to go with a simple theme this time - wanted something focussed and refined. Hope I suceeded! :) Sorry you didn't get one finished...

Mona - Thankyou - The foliage was tough work - especially the trees! I was trying to achieve a natural look - I think I did ok, but trees are really complex - I could have worked on them a lot longer...

05 May 2006, 07:34 AM
I love your work and your image is wondefrull !!
Cool ;)

05 May 2006, 10:13 AM
Thanks Nicolas - Shame you didn't get your finished - you need to stay away from those videogames at crunch time! ;)

06 June 2006, 09:33 PM
Atris - Thanks! - I'll need all the luck I can get with people like you around! ;)

Baron - Cheers mate! - I hope you're right, but I wont hold my breath!... Hey - I just back from a week in Cornwall - I had 55 e-mails in my one account - the only 2 which weren't spam were a CG newsletter, and an auto-message telling me you'd left a post in here...

Sathe - Thanks a lot! - That's high praise considering the company...
