This is my first challenge, I couldn´t resist this time. Good luck to all.

Well, this is only a quick sketch in my notebook, a study of the characters. The story is about an adventurer ans inventor who leaves the town of his childhood with his dog in one of his inventions: a flying turtle.
This is not going to be the final point of view, but I want to see what you think about it.
Hope you like the idea.

03-02-2006, 01:09 PM
wow,i love this sketch~turtle riding,interesting:scream:wish u luck my friend

Here comes another quick sketch. I´m still designing the characters and the turtle.
Hope you like it.

Another quick sketch of the city they are leaving. I think the final image will be from above with the turtle on foreground while the pilot looks down to th city in the background.

03-02-2006, 02:29 PM
im really like'n the turtle....im a really big turtle fan!!

also the little dude with the ears is really really cute!!

im really liking the ideas....

03-02-2006, 02:31 PM

Now I´m focusing on the pilot. my work for the next week will be to design the characters and the city before I begin the actual painting. I don´t usually work this way, liking more to begin right away on the computer because time for my is a luxury. But now there´s enough to calm down and draw at pleasure.
Good luck to all.

03-02-2006, 06:27 PM
The interesting concept! I like your sketches!
Good luck !

03-02-2006, 10:53 PM
Great characters. I'd like to see the second one fleshed out some more.

03-03-2006, 12:35 PM

Another concept of the turtle. The characters still need a little more development. In the final image I intend to see the castle or city from above. Still have to design it.

03-03-2006, 01:17 PM
Wow! You took my request seriously. What a unique idea for a turtle shell—I love this scene! It's such great fantasy and the dog makes me laugh.

03-03-2006, 01:26 PM
Cool concept. I like it..
Turtle sketch looks very cool..
Best of luck to ya!

03-03-2006, 01:50 PM
Wow! Very cool concept, and really good sketches!! Can't wait to see where this is going!

03-03-2006, 01:52 PM
excellent. Love everything from character design to composition. Maybe the turtle could smile a bit more.

03-03-2006, 03:33 PM
I really like your ideas!! Great sketches :D

03-03-2006, 03:47 PM

There is so many interesting concepts here... i will say again thats i love your concept :bounce:

03-03-2006, 04:04 PM
That's a fanatstic concept you got going here, very original!
I love your latest sketch! can't wait to see more!

03-03-2006, 04:30 PM
cool concept!!! i like your style, man! keep updating us with your stuff!

03-03-2006, 05:13 PM
Thank u very much to all, I really appreciate your support. There´s nothing I would like more than keep drawing and drawing and finish the image right away. the problem is I´m busy as hell lately. I´ll do what I can to design the castle in the next days.

03-03-2006, 05:18 PM
Love you'r style! already signed up for this thread! ;)

How'bout some thumbnail sketches of the composition?

03-03-2006, 08:01 PM
Really nice set of sketches. Looks like you have a winner going. cheers, good luck.

03-03-2006, 08:36 PM
Nice sketches so far. I don't know whether to praise you for great vehicle design or great creature design! :D Eiterh way, nice work, looking forward to seeing more...!

03-03-2006, 09:50 PM
I love the idea, I realize it is not complete so make sure to get the "Journey begining" idea across. Still I think the idea is great. Good luck.

03-03-2006, 10:53 PM
I totally love this sketch! Good luck!

Cheers, :)

03-04-2006, 02:13 PM
Those sketches are excellent mate,

Can´t wait to see more

This time I´ve made a comp in Photoshop of two sketches to make an idea about the final image. It is still only a sketch, but now we can see what could be the city and the position of the adventurers. I want to be the city to be somehow immersed in clouds and the turtle flying to the dawn. the problem is the dawn is where the observer is looking so I have still to think about it.
Well, hope you like it and tell me what you think.

03-04-2006, 03:04 PM
man i love the concept, u realy catched the feeling of a yourney in a funey way,

i love it :d

03-04-2006, 03:09 PM
good angle in this last sketch!
Be lurking..

03-04-2006, 03:17 PM
perfect! this has epic journey written all over it! now it's a matter of rendering it with a magical feel to it!

good luck!

03-04-2006, 03:20 PM
That´s the tricky part Ragdoll. Let´s see what can be done. The final lineart is still to come. thanks to all for your support.

03-04-2006, 03:28 PM
I must say that I would like to have such a Turtlemobil myself. :scream: The concept looks really great.
Wish you luck and lot of fun!

03-04-2006, 03:42 PM
hey! :) very nice sketches.. I wonder where that turtle is keeping his organs? :p About showing that they are flying against dawn.. you could use this compo to show what they are leaving behind then when you start painting you could use light and colors to show that they are flying against dawn....? Good luck and have fun!

03-04-2006, 03:45 PM
That are some very neat concepts, Ramón! :) I like the nice 'cartoony' style of it, and still having the nice and regonizable shapes.

Cool (or sad... it's just the way you look at it), that you also had the idea to do something with the turtle! :D A turtle can bring the scene a some more funny feeling, as its often such a dull and tired creature (which might give it just that extra sence of contrast, when you think that 'the riders' are more exited).

Have fun!

03-05-2006, 05:43 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1141580638_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1141580638_large.jpg)

Finally I´ve decided to submit the final drawing. I could go on detailing forever. I think is better to start painting right away and not to make the image an example of simply colouring. The painting will develop itself along the way. The drawing is good enough for me to begin adding colour, so let´s go...

03-05-2006, 05:58 PM
Hi Ramón, you´ve here a nice and funny concept, and a solid drawing. I love the dog :)!
So, I'll be looking foward for the painting process.
Buena suerte.

03-05-2006, 09:57 PM
As I already said, that's really great. Impressive drawing skills. On your last updates (with castle) : I like it but maybe you can add more blank space at right (and top ??) part of your picture to keep the focus on character. Now the castle seems more important than them.

03-05-2006, 10:07 PM
I am really liking where you're taking this! I can't wait to see the colors that you choose!

03-05-2006, 10:08 PM
Maybe you´re right Authentic. I intended to paint the castle in colors somewhat less saturated than the adventurers, that are in the foreground. Nevertheless I think a bit more of sky will improve the image, I´ll try.

03-05-2006, 11:08 PM
hey man! sweet sketches! fantastic drawing & ideia, will check this later:) wish you the best of luck

03-05-2006, 11:23 PM
The image is really great, love the dog and the turtle's expression. lol, theres somthin about the dog that reminds me of Gromit.

03-06-2006, 10:49 AM
nice concept (the flying turtle is great), i love design of the dog. Castle is a little more classic in my opinion

03-06-2006, 04:28 PM
hello ,the sketch looks great so far, keep it up dude:) but I would like the turtles eyes be larger ,just my personal opinion

03-06-2006, 04:37 PM
Lovely concept I like the turtle shell having a grille and stuff :)

I agree with having a bit more white space on the top, so the turtle gets more attention, and maybe its a nice idea to make the castle look a bit more fantasy-style. Right now its a castle that could exist in our world. Add some chimneys, telescopes etc. for example.

03-06-2006, 04:52 PM
I think You're right Yoitisi, I intended to begin painting right away an chage thigs on the fly, but maybe the castle is too conventional and I can take the time to modify it. I like the nowadays look , I don´t think about it as something wrong, but it is true that there is nothing on it that tells the viewer that it was the former home of the pilot. I will think about it. Thanks for your comment.

03-06-2006, 06:50 PM
I don't know about adding negative space at the top. The characters could be brought to our attention through dramatic color rather than negative space. But it's your call. And as far as it being their home, you just have to assume it is their home by the title of the contest—The journey begins, not the journey is halfway over. And I kind of like the fact that the characters are more eccentric than the home they're leaving. That might be why they are leaving - to find a place more suited to their tastes. I think I'm up to 2 ˝ cents so I'll stop there. Nice update.

03-06-2006, 06:57 PM

I've made an alternative with the tower as a kind of laboratory. Maybe is too obvious, I don't know. Let me Know what you think about it.

03-07-2006, 12:10 AM
Your newest drawing is very well done, great composition and attention to details. Also has a very unique style, which is always good. Can't wait to see the painting progress, now get 2 it!

03-07-2006, 02:23 PM
what a great concept. I really like the angle that you have chosen. It really conveys that idea of the characters embarking on a journey.

03-07-2006, 02:27 PM
I've made an alternative with the tower as a kind of laboratory. Maybe is too obvious, I don't know. Let me Know what you think about it.

It seems a bit squashed down, if you stretch it out, vertically, I think it will match the rest of the architecture.

03-08-2006, 08:36 AM
That is one fine sketch you have there! Very nice. Great composition and sence of height. I agree with FalseEye, the tower could benifit from a vertical stretch. But it shouldn't be very much though! Just a little tug :) .

Can't wait to see some colors on this!! Get to it! :applause:

03-08-2006, 08:47 AM
i think u nailed the last one,i like that snoopy look alike dog mate~:scream:lets see some colors soon

03-08-2006, 11:23 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1141817015_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1141817015_large.jpg)

I've finally begun to add some colours. I'll change things on the fly. After all this is going to be a long journey. This one is the very start of it. I'll spend a few days before I post again. Let's rock!

03-08-2006, 01:01 PM
coloring already heh?

the mountains in the background are a very nice touch!
Also you've left some room for the sky, so this can be very cloudy, a lot of things to do with sky..

Keep it up.. ;)

03-08-2006, 02:25 PM
Colors! I like them, very soft colors. Maybe some pink wouldn't hurt either for the clouds, although it could become a bit fluffy :)

I see you added some telescopes and stuff :) I like the fact that only the tower has them, as if the guy in the turtle is different than the rest of the people who live there, it adds a reason why he's leaving.

03-08-2006, 03:16 PM
Hello Ramon,
Your concepts are really good, I really like the power of your simplicity in the volume drawing. I'm sure your work will became one of the most interressant illustration of this challenge. I will follow it step by step , good luck ! ( I have no crits ).

03-09-2006, 08:43 AM
Thanks to all of you for your support. It's very important to me.

MichaelMotion: Of course, there always have to be clouds. What's the point in a sky without them? they make it interesting. I want the city and mountains in the background to be somehow emerging from a low layer of clouds. I don´t know what will be the final effect of this but I'll try it.

yoitisi: Thank you, you have helped me much, as you see I've added a touch of strangeness in the city as you suggested, only in the tower, because I see the pilot as a kind of lovely freak among normal people. I´m not so sure about adding more blank space to the canvas. We'll see.

DeeVad: Thank u so much! :). As you Know, I follow yours too.

03-09-2006, 08:57 AM
Nice colour starting, compadre :) I like the way you unify all the piece with that greyish blue, and then those warm touches. Keep it up!

03-09-2006, 09:53 AM
very nice of your drawing. Have a luck in contest

03-09-2006, 11:53 AM
great drawing. It's a lovely idea and composition.

And that observatory looks cool... i want one on my roof!

Of course I've begun painting the turtle. I couldn't resist.

03-09-2006, 12:18 PM
very cool scene man!!

good luck

03-09-2006, 01:51 PM
Nice work Ramón! It is very comfortable and exciting to look at. Keep it up!

03-09-2006, 02:10 PM
yoitisi: Thank you, you have helped me much, as you see I've added a touch of strangeness in the city as you suggested, only in the tower, because I see the pilot as a kind of lovely freak among normal people. I´m not so sure about adding more blank space to the canvas. We'll see.

No problemo m8 :) I like your piece of art. Nvm about the blank space, I changed my mind about that seeing this with some colors.

03-10-2006, 07:50 AM
se ve muy bien:thumbsup: muy fresco, inocente, divertido, ese tono blanco general se ve muy agradable

buena suerte y nos estamos viendo!!

03-10-2006, 08:02 AM

03-10-2006, 10:30 AM
Wow, this is one big adventure! The dog reminds me of Tin Tin. Can't wait to see the rest of the house!

03-10-2006, 03:48 PM

I just love this entry - it's so whimsical, and the tone and mood are very enchanting. And that little dog! So cute. :D I can't wait to see your progress.

Its looking great! I like the turtle's face too.

03-10-2006, 10:29 PM
Beautiful design, drawing, and color. It has a light fun feel to it. I'm looking forward to more updates.

That is great man that is great:drool:

03-11-2006, 10:18 AM
im really really liking this :)
i showed it to my pet turtle and he tried to attack the screen!! so you got the thumbs up from him!

looking very cool :)

03-12-2006, 01:46 PM
hey Ramitxon, this is realy unique idea and have a great story, flying away fits exactly to a journey begin. i have no critique all is just fine.

03-12-2006, 02:16 PM
haha! Awsome Great sketches. I really like your idea

03-13-2006, 12:04 PM

Still refining colours. I've been overwhelmed with work lately. Fortunately there's still a loong journey ahead. I´ll try to develop a bit more the image next time I post. Hope you like it.

03-13-2006, 12:59 PM
very fun and whimsical -- love the idea, and the perspective is wonderful!

03-13-2006, 02:33 PM
hey ramon! you know we have the same first name? :scream: :D

anyway, the color scheme is looking great! i like it how you made it like a castle floating on the clouds, it adds to the fantasy feel you already have with the main characters! keep it up!

03-14-2006, 09:44 AM
great concept, great draws, nice color!
i'll keep an eye on your work...

03-14-2006, 09:52 AM
Great idea, flying turtle....so fun. Good luck!

03-14-2006, 10:11 AM
Lyrical, beautifull, freakin cool concept, i love the idea! Haha...

Keep it up, cause i´m subscribing

03-14-2006, 12:31 PM
Very much enjoy the drawing and comp. so far. A very minor point as this is clearly a beautiful fantasy - it concerns me mildly that the pilot appears to be sitting INSIDE the actual turtle... is.... is the turtle dead? Couldn't they be ? WHat if?......

*single teardrop hangs expectantly*

03-14-2006, 12:56 PM
jevinart: Thanks.

ragdoll: Gracias tocayo. I like too the color scheme as it is by now, the problem is the image is unfinished and there is still a lot of work ahead, I am afraid I can ruin the mood of the image in the process. I hope not.

Alouette: Thank you very much. I keep an aye on yours too as you know, your drawing is amazing.

Tigrenka: Thanks, glad you like it.

DoInferno: Thank you, I´ll really try to keep you updated.

Avatarist: Thanks. Let's say that as the pilot is a really good inventor, he has made a kind of ciborg or mechanical flying turtle you can actually sit into because it has no real organs, or maybe inside there is a pool of the fabled T-Space or Negative Turtle Space Dimension. Anyway I think it is at less an interesting vehicle. :)

03-16-2006, 10:21 PM
hey ramón, beautyful concept!
i love the inventor's tiny dog and your flying turtle, that's absolutely wonderful!
the laboratory-tower is also a very good accessoir!
keep it up & good look for your journey mate!

03-17-2006, 12:27 AM
Hey Ramitxon,

I absolutely love your image. There's something very cool about it, I can't wait to see it finished. Even the colours as they are now are very good, you have such a nicely drawn image that it doesn't need bold colours to make it work, even though I am sure once you are done it's gonna look excellent.

03-18-2006, 05:14 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1142702087_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1142702087_large.jpg)

I have been busier han I expected, I hope from now to have more time to paint. I have started to detail the castle. More updates soon.

03-18-2006, 05:39 PM
As the Four Fab used to say: "Getting better all the time" :)

03-20-2006, 10:27 AM
I like your choice of colors but I really think it isn't enough saturated (except the sky).

03-20-2006, 11:30 AM
I would like to be a member of that crew! I can feel the adventure coming to then.
Your notebook looks like very suggesting. Good luck and continue enjoiging the challange.

03-20-2006, 12:49 PM
Cool concept. I really enjoy playful ideas like that. The pet reminds me a bit of Gromit or snoopy or something...

03-20-2006, 01:05 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1142859930_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1142859930_large.jpg)

Continue slowly adding colors. I've detailed a bit the clouds of the background. Now I'll begin to refine it and somewhat saturate it, as you said Authentic. I usually work from light colours to deep ones. We'll see what becomes of it.
Hope you like it guys.

03-20-2006, 01:25 PM
hi Ramo'n, keep it going very nice work.:bounce:

03-20-2006, 05:13 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1142874782_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1142874782_large.jpg)

I've doing some work on the crew of the turtle. They are the most fun of the picture. I have still to detail the windshield and the front grill of which I'm not very satisfied with. More updates coming soon.

03-21-2006, 12:21 AM
Ahah really cool! :D I love the idea and the colors are looking neat!

Good luck!

03-21-2006, 12:37 AM
that is what i call "COOL"! u did a good job for that illustration man, only one suggestion add some rotor blade ofachopper like leonardo dvinci did in hes early concpetual helicopter inventions, i think it would be great idea ' i remember also that dragonball character the oldman
and the funny turtle friends of songokou it looks familiar to them' keep it up gudluck to the challenge man! :)

03-21-2006, 12:18 PM
Nigio: Thank you compadre.

authentic: As you see I´m refining colors, the image will look better at the end.

RunawayHorse: I would like too, in fact the only way I can do that is finishing the image, the pilot is me.

Puck: thanks mate. I cannot avoid being influenced by so many valiant dogs. This one hasn't got a name yet. I accept suggestions.

FlaminGlow: Thanks.

Silveraxe: Glad you like it.

nards26: Thank you. Of course the image is unfinished. I have yet to add a lot of things, like the people that inhabit the city, birds, various objects... I still have to design them, don´t worry they will come in time

03-25-2006, 12:18 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1143245930_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/9711/9711_1143245930_large.jpg)

I've been in a hell of work these days. I can only save a few moments here and there to the challenge. I continue slowly, slowly adding colour... a few birds, some roofs, walls... small details on the pilot and the turtle... Soon I'll have to start painting the people of the castle. I know it's boring to see only small updates.

03-25-2006, 07:20 AM

03-28-2006, 06:32 AM
Your entry is one of my favourits! Great work! But maybe you put some more warm colors on it?

First of all I must thank you all for your support. It's very important to me to find such feedback from all of you. These international forums are priceless.
I've started to populate the castle with people. Tell me what you think about it.
I know maybe it's a bit boring to post with only a few amount of changes in the image but I'm a slow painter and that's the way I work, slowly adding bits of detail.

Oops! sorry I posted a wrong image, this is the one I just finished. I still don't know how to edit an entry, if one of you know how to do it please tell me.

03-29-2006, 04:53 AM
Wow, great image. I really love it.

03-29-2006, 04:56 AM
Very nice. Great perspective, great character development.

I think you may need to pop the characters and turtle in the foreground with some saturated colors and warm highlights, right now everything in the piece is about the same tone and intensity.

Tracking this one.

Thank you for all the feedback I'm receiving, her is another update. I'm still detailing the whole image. Refined the tower and the lower city. as it was said before I've saturated the turtle a litle bit and added warm colors to detach it from the background. I'm tuning all the colours of the image. Of course slowly.

04-01-2006, 05:46 PM
Well done Ramón! The details are coming along very nicely. The roofs are great, and so the "turtleport" :) Keep it up, dude.

04-01-2006, 05:59 PM
wow the detail is really coming along since I last viewed this thread, it looks great. :applause:

I don't know if it just me but the bridge seems to have a different perspective to the building.

04-01-2006, 06:33 PM
Great perspektive! And I especially like the turtle character.

04-01-2006, 09:40 PM
Está fantastico!

Continuaré de ojo.

Thanks to all of you for your support: individium, Novacaine, sean_a_murray, Nigio, RedSquirrel, Zeitwolf, Lagutrop. I'm glad you like it. Of course RedSquirrel you are right, the perspective of the bridge is wrong, that is something I must correct in the next update. thank you for your comment.

04-02-2006, 03:33 PM
hehe the turtle and the dog is great haha Good luck to you!:buttrock:

04-02-2006, 03:42 PM
I like the idea, I,ve just now realized that was smoke coming from the back of that turtle. maybe need to work that out a bit, I thought they were clouds! my only crit it is comimg along nicely!:D

04-02-2006, 04:54 PM
Wow! Very imaginative! I like your concept a lot. I think that i'm gonna keep an eye on this one. I like your style. Keep up with your good work!

Good luck!

Hi guys, I've been out of the challenge for a couple of weeks, too much work. Here comes another update, I've refined the general colours a bit and continue detailing the background. See you soon.

04-15-2006, 05:44 PM
You know, my favorite part about this piece is the dog. I love how it reminds me of those old comic book characters from Charley Brown. Anyway, you have a lot of strong points in this piece. 1.) It reads as a journey. 2.) It has an excellent composition, something I'd like to see on the cover of a book, 3.) It's creative, with lot's of things for our eyes to see. I would like to crit it, but it just feels so hard right now. Not too much I see wrong here, and thats a compliment. Good job. *Stares at pic for 2 hours *

I've posted a close up to see someone on the platform saying good bye to the couple of adventurers, as I see that the dog is one of the features that everybody likes the most I've thought that maybe there could be a female doggie, do you think there should be a woman on the platform too?. I know that looking close on the image it is not enough detailed yet, but I'm working on that. Hope you like it.

04-16-2006, 05:40 PM
Hi Ramón, She´s as cute as her husband! Definitly she must remain, but I´m not so sure about another female character saying good bye. Anyway, your image gains in quality with every update. Keep feeding us with your talent, man!:bounce:

04-18-2006, 02:27 PM
Hi! Very good work! Excellent athmosphere! I think a single figure is a very good idea too! And one more. In my view it would be great to add the texture of the stone in some places. Good luck! :)

04-18-2006, 02:34 PM
great painting. the perspective is nice and you have a great bunch of characters here. It's just a small detail but i would make the smoke from the turtle darker. at the moment it blends away over the mountains and it looks like the turtle has come from over the mountains. Just a minor thing though. keep up the good work. Very impressive.

04-18-2006, 05:50 PM
CoreyArtE: Thank you for your kind words, I'm glad that you like it. I must recognize that snoopy dog has reached me too. I´m considering to ask my wife to make a story about the scene as she is a real good writer, turning it into a children's book would be a dream, you Know?, we have some good stories with my illustrations on them waiting to see the light.

Nigio: Thanks for your support Nigio, it means a lot to me. You sure do have talent.
I wasn't sure about adding other characters on the platform but now I think it adds something new to the story, it's a pity she is too small in the image to be seen clearly.

Atris: Thank you, coming from you that's a great compliment. Congratulations on your frontpage. You are right about adding textures, in fact that is the next step in my image. I want to begin really detailing it now, only I am too slow and I have too much work.

domclubb: Thanks, I think you are right, I wasn't sure what to do about the smoke. I know you too are a big fan of little dogs.

I've posted this closeup only to show the direction I'm taking. As Atris said, it's time to begin adding some texture. I've changed the ropes for chains in the platform and begin the first stages for the final coloring that will take the best of a month, judging from the times I'm making

04-19-2006, 02:59 PM
those details are looking cool :)

i really like the colours :)

id go a little stronger contrast on the shadow areas...but then again thats what i always think....lol

keep it up :)

05-05-2006, 05:31 AM
Hey Andreas, very cute character...really like the colors you have reflected in the metal dome of the tower...good luck coloring.

Hi guys, I´m here again. I´m beginning to be afraid of not finishing in time. I´ve been busy for a couple of weeks but I´ll be working on the challenge seriously from now on( I hope...).
I´m adding textures to the buildings and refining everything. Now I´ll continue with the people around the castle.
See you.

05-11-2006, 05:23 PM
Great image RAM. Love the story and the execution. Maybe just a bit more contrast in the foregroiund colors. BRAVO!

05-11-2006, 06:12 PM
Wow, the detailing is looking great! Nice work so far. I like att the little birds, too...!
Cliff mentioned more contrast in the foreground. I agree... either that, or more atmospheric hazing (bluishness) onm the castle and buildings to make the aerotortomobile pop more.
Good luck!

05-11-2006, 07:31 PM
it very nice to see you're back with something new.
i loved your picture from the beginning and now it seems very very beatiful. nothing to crit. from me.

hope you can finish in time

I have decided to finish the turtle and the pilot and his dog as they are on the foreground and finally end with the background.
Luckily I´m still here, I´m going to end this challenge as if this is the last thing I do.
Thanks to all of you for your encouraging comments.

05-14-2006, 07:51 AM
What an utterly odd and fun idea. I like the direction so far. I always wanted a flying turtle of my own. Can't wait to see how this turns out. Bravo so far!

05-14-2006, 04:57 PM
very very nice turtle it reminds me of wolkswagen beetle (the older one)

hmmm maybe i'll try to find a modified flying ww beetle :D it'll feel like riding your turtle (wont be that organic of course)

05-14-2006, 10:18 PM
I like the idea and the execution! Well done and good luck!

First of all, thanks to everybody for your kind words.
I think I'll have to conclude the image some time. I know It is not specially detailed or defined but I like it that way, I like to have the background somehow diffused. Well, I have still work to do.
See you.

05-19-2006, 06:40 PM
Looking really good Ramitxon....

Not sure the turtle would agree as he must have some serious internal injuries, though I'm sure the witch woman probably has a long term cure...

I really like the angle / perspective and the level of detail works well - I find it's easy to get carried away and overwork an idea, so I agree with you on the level of finish (in terms of diffused background)...

Great work / great concept and looking forward to seeing the final high res.version. :) :)

05-19-2006, 06:57 PM
Thank you David, I'm glad you like it. You are right. I'm a bit worried about overworking the image, now I'm in a point in which is not easy to continue adding detail, I see such excellent works around here full of detail and I would wish to paint like them, but after all, this is my own way of painting. At some point in my drawings I really don´t know how to continue. For me that's the time to finish. After all it's not as if I had a lot of time left.
By the way your own thread is amazing, thanks for dropping by.

This is the story behind 'Flying Away':

At the high city of Pomatta, famous among all others because it was surrounded by clouds rivalling the tallest peaks, lived Calculus, one of the greatest inventors and magicians of the kingdom, his strange laboratory towering above the other buildings.

Calculus' mind and powers were formidable, only he was a great dreamer, so life around him was far from 'normal'. Being a genius among ordinary people is not an easy task, the inhabitants of the high city looked upon him with fear and distrust.

One morning Calculus and his best friend took with them all their belongings and, mounting one of his strangest inventions, the fabled aerotortomobile, strange mix of living creature and steam engine, departed seeking adventure. It was time to look for new horizons.

Leaving all else behind wasn't so easy to Calculus' faithful dog. Looking back he whispered to himself on his seat among the luggage: ¨one day I'll return...¨

Calculus' own gaze was fixed ahead on the unknown journey before him...

Congratulations on your final image! Very good work! :) Impressive, interesting story with a romantic shade! Excellent characters! I really like your image! And I wish you good luck in the next stage of the challenge. :)

05-21-2006, 08:03 AM
Congrats for the end of your journey. I really like it!

05-21-2006, 03:55 PM
Thank you Atris for your support, Glad you like the story as well as the picture. I hope you finish your own image in time cause it's really amazing.

Madunecer: thank you for your kind words, I wish you good luck with your 3 challenge. Great work!

And of course thanks to all of you for dropping by my thread and for your feedback and kind words, this has been a fantastic experience, now it's time to rest and see how this turns out.

05-21-2006, 04:42 PM
Hey, Ramon, my apologies too for not stopping by to comment. So many threads, so little time. I really like your work too. Your perspective skill is excellent! Maybe the turtle should be wearing goggles or something, haha. Or the turtle could have feathery flippers as a result of Calculus' experimentations which enabled him to fly. Damn, should have suggested this earlier on before you posted the final image! But don't worry about it because what you have done is great enough! Reminds me of Hayao Miyazaki's animations!

Congratulations for completing and all the best for the final judging! ;)

05-22-2006, 11:57 AM
Great, great work, Ramón! I like it very much. The story is interesting too, but I´m afraid that you missed something so important: The dog's NAME!! He' s the funniest character in your image, and he deserves a special treatment :)
Buena suerte, compadre!

05-23-2006, 01:06 AM
superb! your picture has a greaaattt taste im sure i said those things before but when i see this picture these are the things i can say.

really, this picture is one of the pictures i liked most, it takes me to my childhood times when i read stories about this kind of inventors and dream.

05-23-2006, 04:57 AM
Calculus' mind and powers were formidable, only he was a great dreamer, so life around him was far from 'normal'.

that says it all... :) great story and picture... this is the kind of picture that make you smile and leave a happy feeling when you been looking at it... well done... :bounce:

05-24-2006, 04:22 PM
jeromoo: Thanks Jerome. It is true I could have made the turtle freakier, I was considering it but I found it a bit excessive I liked the fact you could easily recognize it as a flying turtle.
And yes, Miyazaki's films are the best of the best.
Thank you for your kind words and congratulations and good luck to you too.

Nigio: Gracias compadre. You have been here from the beginning of the challenge and your support have been essential. Yes you are right, the dog has no name. I couldn't find one suitable for him, I wanted to give him a feeling of being the faithful friend who is always in the shadow of his master, but of course we see them from the outside and of course he is the first thing we see on the image. I have a special feeling for him too, I have draw him bigger and post it on my daughter's room, she loves him too.
Buena suerte a ti también.

individium: Thank you so much man. You couldn't have said anything nicer.

makaron: thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you like the story too.

05-25-2006, 12:15 PM
discworld meets snoopy. funny.
good luck.

05-29-2006, 02:45 AM
Wow Ramón! Such a fun, bright, well rendered image! Really a joy to discover -- looking forward to seeing more of your work in future challenges, best of luck!

06-10-2006, 05:29 AM
Charming picture, great sense of motion. Good luck with the judges.

06-16-2006, 08:22 PM
