I just start modelling a little.
I have a rough picture in my head on how the characters should look like, but I haven’t made concept yet. I just know how the boots should look like ;-).
So here is a first WIP.

Modelling already, eh? Nice work!

The wrinkles look a bit strange on the boots, more like lumps, but of course judging by your concept the boots will be very small on the screen, so no big deal.

You´re speedy, you already started modeling!
But I have to agree with burpy: don´t add too many details on the boots and don´t make them so high-poly, because you´ll hardly see them in the final render.
Be careful with the polycount! :wip:

You’re right with the wrinkles I will refine them. I am not sure about the camera angle jet. I think I will change it so that the mail character is very close to camera. So I will need him to be very detailed.

Btw. I am not using polygons. I am using Hash Animation:Master and all the models are spline based.

I roughly put together the single parts that I have so far. All of them are still “under construction” especially the head, but this should give a better impression of how the character will look like.

Here is the current modelling stage of the main character.
Problems with more details is the limitation of my machine.
I will put him aside now for a while and concentrate on his ship. But I will refine him later.

I added the propellers for the zeppelin.
The details are already a challenge for my machine. I split the model in parts and put them together for rendering.

Nice work...good imagination...looking forward to seeing how this evolves. You might want to use a scuplting tool to slightly alter your models to make them more organic (for example, the duplicated fan blades...if a scuplt tool were used to pull out verts differently on each of the blades your model might look more interesting...likewise for the pipes, etc.). Zeppelin is growing.
Imperfections will come later. I will shift CPs when the model is complete.
The new version of Animation:Master now can do subpixel displacement. I will give it a try later.

The details on your characters are amazing! However the overall form of the birds head and body could use more attention. Its kind of hard to make out what is the forearms and upperarms on the character. Also the face is so simple compared to the clothing style.

The zeppelin is great, although i think the 'balloon' part could be a bit bigger - now it doesn't really look like it's able to lift the 'body'. Still, i like it a lot.

I love the way you're building this scene. It all looks so believable. I know it's still early in the modelling stage but maybe the joint between the main branch and the trunk could be smoothed out a bit. I love the idea of a bird having a zepelin. Makes as much sense to me as why people (who can walk) prefer to get around in cars! Fantastic work - keep it up!

Before I’ll go on modelling I will first try to find the final layout to see which parts I have still to model and where I have to put more details.

Not really sure if this fits into the modeling section but anyway here is my first try to put some feathers on my main character.
I used the Hair feature of Animation:Master with the two painted feathers at the top right as emitter.

Gotta say that I like #3 better. I think it shows more action instead of a static scene. I almost want to lean as I look at the hot air baloon in anticipation of the turn.

I'd say "yes" to 2nd and 3rd compositions. Because there's a feeling of "going away and departure" feel in them, which the challange suggests :) Most participants miss that point. but which one I'll pick, it all depends on story, background, and characters.

Second composition will let you show a large background, and it will make your foreground characters more visible, more on focus. The final picture will be less crowded, easier to read and more manageable both for you and viewer (us :)). In addition to this, background may suggest us the destination of the journey, so it can add alot to narration. on the other hand, this composition may have a disadventage: although we may see passangers' emotions, those who're at the dock/bay we'll turn away from us. (you may consider zooming in the camera, and blurring the dock, thus putting passangers on focus again)

The third one is almost the opposite of the second :) large background again, but it will show the departure point instead of destination, so maybe you should consider narrating "why they are leaving" instead of "what they are looking for". this time passangers will be turning away from us, they would be waving to those at the bay, but no facial expression. The key element becomes the people at the dock. there may be a captain looking towards us though.

I don't know, I'm speculating here and discuss the possibilities :) it all depends on what you want to do, and what you imagine to do.

Right now I tend to use layout no. 2, because as loverdose said I can show the destination of the journey.

There will be only three character in the pic. The one with the hat (actually the son of the other two character) will drive the ship. He is starting a quest for the blue moon-leaf-flower, because it is urgently needed for a medicine to heal the forest they all live in from a deadly illness.

Wow congratulations on such a well done turntable! I really love the ship -- and, you have laid out all of your elements very well. It's easy to see details in the ship yet you have managed to fit everything well into the scene. Looking forward to seeing the final image! Good luck!

It's looking wonderful, Russel. I know you say it's only a texturing WIP but my suggestion would be to desaturate the light green grass that's visible under the tree. Because it is very bright at the moment the grass tends to attract too much attention. The island in the distance is looking excellent too. Are you planning on putting in some distance haze for the final?

hi, it's been a long time since i got near a pc but from what i c u've made great progress.
now for my crits-
1. the island lacks... something.it doesn't look apealing enough to travel there. maybe if u'd add a city or somthing on it.

2. the green thing thats suppose to be the mountion,well i'm sure you add details to it later.

3. the big ocean, maybe add some boats ( fishing boats or smth. it would add life to it.)

beyond that-amazing work!

Here's the current status. Unfortunately I will not be able to use the latest version of Animation:Master. My trial has expired and I can't afford the update right now. So no sub-pixel displacement. I had to use bump for the tree instead.

Great update. That's a shame about the lack of SPD but the bump is working fine and you can always do some post work in Photoshop if you want. The colouring is working much better now too. It was great to see the hi-res too. Wonderful stuff

hi russel, compozition looks very good, I only have a problm with the sea, should have a little color variaton, somthing like brighter close to shore and darker far

Since his early childhood Jonathan dreams to fly.
Every evening his grandma told him stories of the former times, when birds of their kind still had wings to fly. Every morning he ran outside to watch the paradise birds leaving their trees and flying to the open sea. Jonathan so much wished he could join them.
As soon as he was able to hold a pencil Jonathan starts drawing all different kinds of flying machines. Unfortunately he never had the chance to build one of his inventions.
One day when he was out in the forest, climbing on the huge trees, he realised tiny blue spots on the bark and when he stepped on a branch which was covered all over with this blue spots the branch suddenly breaks and Jonathan managed to grab a vein in the very last second to stop him from falling to dead. Once again he wished he could fly.
Later when he told his grandma from his adventure she got very excited and ask Jonathan to bring her a piece of the bark with the blue spots.
Jonathan who saw the fear in his grandma’s eyes ran as fast as he could to get a piece of the bark.
When he gave it to his grandma she starts to shiver and had to sit down. It took a while until she was able to speak again. Than she told Jonathan what this blue spots are.
The blue spots are the first sign of a very serious illness which affects the trees. It starts quite slow, but when not stopped in early stages it will affect the whole wood and kill all the trees in it. There is only one way to save the trees. A medicine made from the Blue Moon Leaf Flower, which was quite common is the old days but now had vanished totally from the wood.
There is only on person who knows where the flower can still be found. The old hermit on stone-bridge island. But there is no other way to get there than flying and we lost this ability long time ago.
Now it was Jonathan’s time to get very excited. He said to his grandma that they may not be able to fly by themselves but that he could build a machine which can do. He would just need the material which he could not afford till now.
Grandma agreed with Jonathan and both went to see the tree committee to give a report of what they have discovered and asked them to help build Jonathans flying machine. It didn’t take long to persuade the committee and shortly after the work on Jonathans machine started.
After three weeks of hard work the airship was finally finished. Jonathan named it after the nickname of his Grandma. It referred to the time when her feathers where still black as the night and she was know through out the wood as the “Dark Lady”.
The next day, when all things Jonathan would need were brought on board

Congratulations. It looks fantastic. I really like those final touches - the birds flying, the tree texture and the atmospheric effects and colours of the shallow water. All very beautiful and very much pointing to a journey. The story is excellent too. I sure hope to see you in another challenge
