still playing around with ideas, and warming up. I think this has alot of potential ;p

I think I'll want to swop out the human/pixie characters for insects instead (don't want to model another human from scratch)

comments and suggestions very welcome ;p

(more ideas to come)

03-01-2006, 10:13 PM
Hi Martin,

really nice start... I almost can smell the idea :)

03-01-2006, 10:29 PM
pretty cool, reminds me of bondage fairies

good luck

03-02-2006, 12:33 AM

Good luck!

03-02-2006, 07:17 AM

03-02-2006, 07:43 AM
Great concept martin. On a journey and lost :D cant wait to see your models :D

03-02-2006, 08:33 AM
The sketch is cool and the idea seems interesting ...

03-02-2006, 09:16 AM
@3d-empire - huh? not sure what u mean with the vray thing...

He he,. sorry, if i'm not making any sense.
-You had some render trouble with the frogleg, some v-ray bug...
hmm, never mind.
Good to see your back..

03-02-2006, 10:29 AM
Hi Martin , !

One more , you're going with a splendid idea !!
Can wait to see the realisation of that baby !

cheers ,

03-02-2006, 10:41 AM
Yes pretty nice idea man, dunno if you're going to stay with this but it's a cool start anyway, looking forward for developpement

a quick doodle, hope you can make out from the mess. It's a ship made of leaves and twigs ready to set out for a voyage. I'll refine the designs for the ship a bit more, but so far I'm liking this idea more. hmm, from the sketch the outer shell almost reminds of the Protoss carrier from Starcraft ... but it'll be more leafy

03-02-2006, 01:35 PM
I get it, but if I was you I d make something to show your CRAZY modelling skills!

03-02-2006, 01:43 PM
Hey Martin,

Cool idea on your 2nd concept and nice sketch on your first concept. Look forward to your image coming together.

03-02-2006, 02:07 PM
Nice start

Good luck to you :bounce:

03-02-2006, 02:10 PM
Really nice idea. Waiting to see more of this... :applause:

Keep up the good work!!

03-02-2006, 02:23 PM
yes! with your modleing skill , I'm sure , it will turn out very well! and I love protoss carrier!

03-02-2006, 02:42 PM

03-02-2006, 02:48 PM
Hi Martin. Your frogs were really spectacular. Your image was one of my favs too. Good luck to you on this long journey.

03-02-2006, 08:59 PM
Very nice concept mate! Ship made of leaves... very poetic! I fancy those bugsy stuff from the times of BUGS LIFE the movie

03-02-2006, 09:01 PM
I love your concept! It's so original. Good luck with developing your idea further.:)

03-02-2006, 09:30 PM
ahhh...nice idea Martin..very orignal.., waiting fo more updaes:bounce:

03-02-2006, 11:14 PM
Loved the frog. I'm anxious to see what you come up with. That second sketch is a little hard to make out but if I were your boss I would trust you. BUT, like it was mentioned earlier, please leave room for rendering. Please, please, please, please!!! :bounce:

03-03-2006, 03:30 AM
Looking good Martin. The ship looks intriguing; I can’t wait to see more.:)

03-03-2006, 03:33 AM

03-03-2006, 07:56 AM

03-06-2006, 02:36 AM
Hey Martin, loved the frog you did for spectacular, even though I missed the thread! I'll be in on this one for sure..the leaf boat is an interesting idea-could be quite a visual treat.
look forward to more.

03-06-2006, 04:23 PM

still trying to find ideas.

third concept of elven hippogryph riders migrating by air to find a new home. In the background they're pulling their flying vessel to pick up speed.

03-06-2006, 07:05 PM
Love the composition and energy of this latest sketch! And theres something about flying ships that always makes me "Wooo!!!"

03-06-2006, 07:07 PM
This looks excellent so far, really like the angle and composition of this sketch too

03-06-2006, 07:45 PM
Your last sketch is really great martin ! The composition is very dynamic ! this should be a great picture !

03-06-2006, 08:18 PM
man this one is also nice!...i like this idea...with your quality this can really rock!..
and well i also liked the leaves ship idea. so what ever u choose i think will be great

03-06-2006, 09:45 PM
Concept #3 kicks the boot!

03-06-2006, 10:07 PM
Nice 3rd concept, it's my fav so far, what would you choose for environnement, landscape, only a sky ?

Looking forward :)

03-06-2006, 10:41 PM
looking forward to whatever you choose, but i like the other leaf ship better. i thought it looked a little more original

03-07-2006, 08:38 AM
Nice sketch ... again :D

03-07-2006, 10:08 AM
I would say go with the third one. It seems more active and is more interesting to the eye. :D

03-07-2006, 12:10 PM
I love this Elven theme you've got going, you're comming up with some great ideas. Don't want to suggest anything, jsut want to see what you come up with... good luck :)

03-07-2006, 12:39 PM
argh.. lol, im pulling out my feathers ;p

I've searched everywhere, but can't find a method of rendering realistic looking feathers... sometimes I hate the technical aspect of 3d!

tried the pluck script, but it's tedious...

03-07-2006, 12:44 PM
Damn... I'm late here Martin... but at time for the best sketch... this latest one is really the better... really brillant... receive all my wishes for your creation my friend... and GOOooooo :bounce:

03-07-2006, 08:36 PM
nice new concept..I think that's my favourite..good luck with the feathers! bitmap/ alphas wouldn't be a copout.

03-07-2006, 11:38 PM

Oh noooo! seems like the file isnt there no more..it was a n interesting zip file...maybe u can ask Him to upload again..

03-07-2006, 11:55 PM
Yay...U go on latest concept?...this is veeery sweet....but..but..it has ..feathers in... :argh: ..a lot... :bounce:

Cool concept... :bounce:

03-08-2006, 12:42 AM
the last sketch is very nice, but it might say action more than a journey beginning,.
but what the ****, as long as it looks briliant.
Feathers will be a nightmare.
Hamid made a nice bird in the last challange, maybe some ideas in his spectacular thread..

03-08-2006, 09:05 AM
awesome ;p

thanks rattlesnake! a few of those links I didn't find.. good read. I think at this stage I'll go for the 3rd concept. Things are a bit mad over here preparing for volleyball tournament and training, so if I spend another week on concept I'm screwed.

Hamid's thread is great, tho he's using maya so the script he used won't work for me.. interesting non the less.

03-08-2006, 11:16 AM
Hi martin. I didn't saw you were on this challenge. Glad to see you here. I really like your last picture. Your concept seems good.
Good luck.

03-09-2006, 11:46 PM
Hello Martin!! :wavey:

Good new that you're on this challenge too, i love your last entry for Spectacular, was my favorite, and i can't wait to see what you'll do in this one!! :bounce:

Like the first and third concept, perhaps a little more the third, but the compo disturb me, i think it's not the final.
Keep posting!!!

Have fun and good luck for challenge!!

03-10-2006, 06:51 AM

Time to get the ball rolling - started on the head. it looks kinda weird since it's featherless... a lot of trial and error over the next few days/weeks to get it right

03-11-2006, 05:50 PM
Nice modeling on that brid!

Keep it up!

update on the arms, don't want to go too detailed on the shoulders and upper arm as it's going to covered in feathers.

more updates to come...

03-16-2006, 09:01 PM
Hey, Martin! Modeling looks very nice, as always! Super clear modeling! Cant wait to see it textured! :)

03-17-2006, 08:42 AM
I must agree... clear and clean  ...

haven't been very good with updates lately, been a bit busy ;(

I've done the legs and torso, not final yet and alot to be tweaked. Still working on the head and need to add ears, then finally the wings.

comments and crits welcome

03-22-2006, 10:03 PM
That looks pretty interesting.
You've got a good and smooth transition between the different species that looks very convincing.
Looks cool.

03-22-2006, 10:49 PM
Wow! it looks like the "imposible creatures" game...good work!

03-23-2006, 12:37 AM
Wow i like so much, the sketch too...is going to be a nice final imagine seeing what you have done in past challenges...Have fun!

03-23-2006, 01:02 AM
Nice griffin. I really like the proportions you have there, much better than many others I've seen.

03-23-2006, 01:44 AM

03-23-2006, 08:14 AM

Started on the wings, feathers to come

03-25-2006, 10:51 AM
The modeling is really good :)

03-25-2006, 10:51 AM
Very nice modeling, nothing to crit man, keep it up :)

03-25-2006, 07:01 PM
more more more!! :thumbsup::bounce:

03-25-2006, 07:08 PM
I enjoy watching you model. Keep going!

03-25-2006, 08:56 PM
I think he could use some muscle definition in 'wing shoulder' area (heh don't know the proper anathomical name ;) ), and lower neck - Since the wings are supposed to be able to lift the whole creature, it should be muscled quite well. I like the way you did the rest of the body.

03-25-2006, 10:35 PM
thanks for the feedback guys

azazel - valid points, thanks. I'm still thinking if it's worth adding the detail for the neck and wing area if it's covered in down/contour feathers, I'll see how it goes but I'll probably add it ;p

03-25-2006, 10:37 PM

progress on the feather layout so far, I'm using a planes approach for the wing feathers, the rest of the body I'll play around with feather geometry hair.

03-25-2006, 10:52 PM
Is going to be every time better...Keep on in this way:bowdown:

03-26-2006, 01:10 AM
Hey nice creature and vry good job with the feathers!

03-27-2006, 08:13 AM

I think i'm done with the main mesh. I'll be concentrating more on the feathers this week and getting it right.

comments / improvements welcome ;p

03-28-2006, 06:45 AM
Wow man, very nice modeling! Your character is looking great and the feathers are awesome!.

Keep it up man:thumbsup:

03-28-2006, 06:49 AM
nice work on the feathers..looks like a tedious job!!

03-28-2006, 08:13 AM
That comes to be really impressive Martin... the design of this pet is vzery original... nice work and very clean modeling

03-28-2006, 08:17 AM

Very nice looking griffen dude.Keep it up.

03-28-2006, 09:13 AM
Wow ! splendid progress on that griffen !

I really dig your so clean and accurate modeling !
Can't wait for more !

cheers ,

03-28-2006, 09:21 AM
Great job dude.
It looks awesome... I like the model itself as much as the design.
the muscle is very clean and accurate. I'll check u out again.

03-28-2006, 10:18 AM
Neat :) But i have one more crit - the wing's forearm/elbow part looks very thin and fragile, and bit too short. Or maybe it just sticks out due to color variation of feathers and the body, as the silhouette looks about right.

03-28-2006, 10:27 AM
thx for the feedback everyone ;p

@azazel - heya, the wing mesh actually extends beyond the feather region with the feathers over it, and as you said, the colour contrast makes it look thinner. With all the feathers/hair in place it should look smoother (in theory, hehhe)

03-28-2006, 11:08 AM
The gryphon is fantastic. Has to be one of the best I've ever seen, and it's not textured, yet! Excellent work.

Jeah Martin It's really great! Maybe the pose is "rigid", but the character's proportions are smooth and well thought.

Very good work Martin!

The feathers worked out very nicely.
Did you map them before all the copying around?

to answer some questions -

@Tremoside - it's not rigged yet ;p

@dannyfalch - no maps applied to the feathers yet, just shaped planes

Ok,. it will take som map/texture work to get the wings done then, if no uvw was applied before copying,.
Good luck.

This is the most beautiful creature. I'm not gonna crit on anything, that would only imply that I know more than you...which I clearly don't. I can't wait to see all the elements together and not to mention, the amazing texture on that creature...Griffin? - I'm sure you won't dissapoint.

howsit guys

sorry for not updating in 3 weeks, alot has been going outside of 3d work and I haven't been able to really get this project going smoothly.

It seems that I probably won't be able to finish, which is a real shame and I hate not finishing what I start. Over the next month I'll be learning XSI to prepare for a new career in animation.

till then guys, I'll be watching on from the sidelines - goodluck!
